Our group of 4 came here last Saturday around 7PM. We were happy to see our favorite bartender, Mandy, at the helm. Mandy makes sure that you are happy with your drinks and always asks if you like what she makes for you. Excellent! They have really improved the menu since earlier in the year, and the food was very good this time around. My wife was gushing over how much she liked her enchiladas, and our neighbor's appetizer of Taquitos was killer and could have been an entree. We'll be back ! read more

Alcove Cantina opened up where Juniors used to be, so I was hoping it would also have good food and a fun vibe. I love supporting local businesses and I love downtown Round Rock. Unfortunately, going to Alcove Cantina was a pretty bad experience all around. I went there with a friend last night. We ordered the queso to start and then each ordered tacos. It was about 25 mins or so before our food came out...and it came out before the queso appetizer did. Both of our tacos were cold. The tacos are served over beans and rice, so my friends tacos were not only cold, but also soggy and falling apart because they were soaked in beans. I had ordered my tacos with corn tortillas because I recently found out I have somewhat of a gluten allergy, but they brought them out with flour. They brought me new tortillas a few mins later. I started making my tacos in the new tortillas only to find a hair in my chicken. The waitress said the cooks all wear caps but someone else had hair in their food earlier as well so the manager was investigating. The queso was cold as well. We ended up not eating any of our food except for a couple of bites. The couple of bites we did have were not good. Neither of us liked the food. The manager didn't charge us for our plates but did charge us for the queso. We ended up going next door to Ajo afterwards where we know we can count on great food and service. Bummer...it may be growing pains, who knows. We won't be back. I had previously tried ordering a to go order as well, and I had seen on their FB page that they were serving their full menu. It wasn't on Facebook or their website, so I called to ask about it, to which I was told over the phone it was on their FB page. When I said it wasn't, they told me that it was...and I assured them it wasn't. They double checked and said it would be up within 5 mins. Days later, it still wasn't up. Overall just not a huge fan. I will say our waitress was really nice when we were there, though. So I guess there's that. read more

I had been wanting to come back here to eat a second time to see if things had improved since the first time we went they were still pretty new. This was technically my third time here, but the second time I was just bar hopping for a friend's birthday and only had a beer (I still think it's a nice place for that). House margaritas were waaaay too sweet for my husband and me. It tasted like Sprite, which I do not enjoy. I didn't finish drinking it, which would never happen anywhere else. Interestingly, I have gotten great margaritas at The Rock Sports bar, which is owned by the same people. The chips seem like those thick cut chips from HEB and seemed stale. We ordered salsa and queso. The queso has the consistency and look of Velveeta, except with some garnishes added. Normally at Mexican restaurants I eat way too many chips and salsa/queso and am full by the time my meal comes, but that didn't happen here. Also there was a hair in the queso. Our main courses were okay, but overall bland and nothing to write home about (even the crunchy beef taco I loved so much my first time was just okay this time). The worst part was the staff. Our server was great, but it was clear she was serving most of the inside tables and making drinks herself at the bar, while another waitress spent all of her time telling her one table about how much she hates sweeping and how she was able to get cut an hour early the night before and how happy she was. My husband commented that she must be drunk because of how loudly she was talking, and a few seconds later, she knocked over some glasses or something and made a big scene. I honestly did not see her do any work the entire time we were there besides talking to this one table that was closing out and talking to some guys sitting at the bar. By the time we left, I was certain she was drunk or on drugs because of how loud and out of it she seemed. Also, they should institute some kind of dress code because she was wearing beat up exercise shorts with a skimpy spaghetti string top and the other waitresses were not dressed much better than that. Not saying they need to be wearing ball gowns, but they looked like they were wearing pajamas with a push up bra for the most part. I'll go back if my friends want to stop by for drinks (and I'll stick to beer), but other than that I think we've given this place enough chances. I could say more about the experience, but since I've written a novel already, I'll just say I was annoyed that I spent 45 dollars and left without finishing my drink and still hungry. read more

Food heaven!! RR desperately needed a GREAT new Tex Mex restaurant & This is IT!! The food here is positively AMAZING and I sooooo want to see them succeed!!! Great ambiance, ate outside on the heated patio under the stars this evening listening to live blues!! I was in heaven! My (picky) husband son and I shared fajitas for THREE! (Who does fajitas for 3??? Love it, thanks for offering that!!!) We all left full and quite happy. The prices are great, the quality of food top notch and VERY VERY flavorful (((no idea what that other reviewer was talking about when commenting on mediocre food... I consider myself a foodie and find myself still thinking about how good it was the next day!))) They do need to staff up now that spring has arrived & downtown RR has been reinvigorated with new sidewalks, streetlights and restaurants... so this is a hint for them to please get the servers trained, supported, and well managed and you will be a huge success!! Wow, just wow! Negative 10 stars would be more accurate to describe my experience at this place. Aside from the staff being extremely slow, unpleasant, unprofessional and incompetent there was shards of glass, actual glass in my food. When I got up to find someone to speak to, because a server wasn't coming and hadn't been to the table in over 30 minutes, the man that came took the second piece of glass I'd managed not to swallow back to the kitchen and came back and said it was a crystal that was in the beans, yes that's right a crystal not even a rock. I spent the next 5 minutes googling glass crystals in beans which wasn't a thing, not to mention the "crystal" was in shredded cheese not beans. He then proceeds to offer me another plate off food. It wasn't until I asked that he said "ok" to removing the contaminated food items off of the check. When leaving I walked up to the bar and asked to speak with manager and the lady behind the bar said she was so I explained to her what had happened thinking she might take it a bit more seriously but I was wrong. She was basically unresponsive and not concerned in any sort of way. She went and got the cook that I had previously spoken with who once again said it was a "crystal". The entire situation was awful and their response made it 10x worse. I was lucky to not crack a tooth or cut my mouth and could still possible have some sort of health issue from the glass I did manage to swallow. read more

My girlfriend and I went here over the weekend with hopes for some good Mexican food and margaritas. We were disappointed. It wasn't too crowded and they had a lot of people working on a Friday night. We started with chips and salsa, and both were good. The chips are sturdy and the salsa is spicy but not too much. That was about the only good thing we had. I got their house margarita and my girlfriend got their frozen margarita. Her's was in a small, pretty glass and wasn't bad, but it was sweet and you couldn't taste any tequila. Mine was overly sweet and was like a slightly lime-ish limeade with a lot of sugar. I didn't finish it. The queso was the one with meat and guac in it, and the meat was very greasy and the guacamole was cold when they put it in, so that chilled the queso down considerable. Cold, greasy queso is not awesome. We decided against dinner and went next door. Our server was hustling and very nice. It took us a while to get waters but she didn't forget. They have some good beers on tap, I would stick to those. I would give them 2.5 if I could but it was just not a great experience. read more

This place served me the best chicken enchiladas I've had in years. My husband's beef fajitas were also outstanding. Queso is wonderful. I'll be back on a regular basis. Over priced dried out cheap cuts of meat. As a single person going out for dinner the choices for fajitas are only for two or more. The mixed meat plate, which I chose as beef and chicken, was terrible. The chicken was thigh meat only and the beef was so dry you could almost call it jerky. Asked the server if chips are extra and he said no they are gratis but you have to ask for them. Tortillas are absolutely not handmade, probably purchased from HEB down the street. read more

We dropped in for a quick lunch and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. I ordered a combo with chicken enchilada and a beef fajita taco - both were EXCELLENT. The enchilada was full of chicken and the jalapeno cream sauce was wonderful. There was a lot of fajita meat in the taco. The fajita meat was moist and grilled just how I like it so I will be tempted to try a plate next time. The charro beans were smoky with lots of jalapenos. Even the rice had great texture and actually had flavor (so often it is the throwaway thing on a combo plate). My companion had a taco salad loaded with ground beef and crisp lettuce and fresh toppings. The tortillas taste homemade (so tired of the packaged tortillas being served restaurants) and they definitely brought the level of enjoyment up a notch. The only negative - we haven't noticed this spot before! Definitely a go-to for good Mexican food from now on. read more

I was really excited to check out the newest addition to downtown Round Rock. We stopped in for the first time last night with a group for a few late night drinks. We were impressed with the remodel. It's a nice atmosphere with friendly staff. We especially liked the new bar in the back. We decided to return this evening for dinner. Unfortunately, we were unimpressed by the food. Overall, most of it was very bland (specifically the refried beans and chicken fajita meat). My sister ordered a cheese enchilada which was not cooked all the way though, so basically it was just a tortilla rolled up with shredded cheese in it. Also, the food could have been served warmer. The jalapeno poppers and guac were good and we ordered corn which was unique and flavorful. I doubt we will return for another full meal, however we will definitely be back for drinks and appetizers! read more
