Yummy food. Excellent patio. Good music. Convenient nearby parking. Friendly people. What's not to love?

Meh, I'm over this place. The food and service has gone downhill and it's clear no one cares. Our server arrived at our table with no smile, no greeting. Our rice was dry, tacos had almost no meat in them (mine was set in the refried beans and was a mess), cheese was not melted in the enchiladas, and my partner's black beans were watery and tasteless. Not that they would know this, because the server never came by our table to check. As if that's not bad enough, some patron or employee must have had a sour tummy and blown up the bathroom. The smell of human waste wafted through the restaurant followed by floral human waste from an air freshener. Pretty sad. I have the second highest number of check-ins here but have just had too many subpar experiences to return. read more

The food here is extremely good! We tried one of every taco on the menu, and they did not disappoint! The charro beans are delicious, and the Spanish rice is perfect! The restaurant is very clean and well maintained. Good atmosphere for a relaxing afternoon snack or drink. Highly recommend! read more

SHORT STORY Parking may be a issues, Small place, self seating (get there at reasonable time) they have live music atleast on the Friday I went. Drinks were decent however the food could have been better. No dress code everybody was wearing athletic clothes to date night clothes. It was also hot so dress for the weather if you wanna sit outside. There was also like a lounge next door, maybe connected because you can get to it from the outside area, didn't think to try but music seemed decent. LONG STORY Visited with a friend while I was in town. Found a good spot across the street. Place was pretty packed for around 7pm. It's very small and it's self seating. There was inside and out door seating. After waiting maybe 15 minutes for someone to get up, finally got to sit at the bar. Around that time the live music band was warming up to perform. It was Just some cover band singing some familiar and corny songs lol. (maybe the band changes) There seemed to be a lounge next door that's apart of the same place. I saw a door that connected the two places from the outside bar area. I didn't go but they were playing regular hip hop music (maybe a mixture) I got chips and queso and a frozen margarita. Friend got nachos and margarita as well. The margaritas were pretty good however we both agreed that the food could've been a lot better. Go try the food for yourself! read more

The drinks and food were great. The service was super slow and looked like a lost cat in Antarctica. We waited a while to get our food and drink order. I got the prickly pear margarita and my husband got the house margarita. The margaritas were tasty and simple. We got shrimp fajitas which were delicious but the service took so long getting extra items out and it seemed like not enough shrimp compared to what we ordered. My friend got the cheese enchiladas and was not pleased. The waitstaff took our food to the wrong table first and then brought it over to us. Everything came out separately and on several different plates with a lot of time between. Overall the food and drinks were five star. The service was three star. read more

The wife and I both enjoyed out visit. We started with the Tres Amigo Combo including Queso, Salsa and Guac...All was good, and fresh. I do like the idea of a 2/3/4/5 combo plates...Great chance to try multiple item, and thats what I did...Wife stuck with the basic Beef Chiladas, double rice..no beans...Sauce was good and beef had flavor...I went with one, Beef, one Chicken Chiladas and a Barbacoa Taco on the side..Charro Beans and rice as well..Everything tasted good...but food could have been warmer. There are a few more menu items I would like to try so we will keep it on the radar. read more

I hate giving 3 stars so let me give you the good first. The queso is super yummy! The patio is nice! Service is always friendly! But here is why 3 stars, there's just nothing great about it. Tonight we had the fajitas and they were not good. Everything else I've ever had from here was good but the fajitas not so much. They didn't have flavor; the steak was like brisket to me with a lot of gristle and the chicken was dry. I love fajitas so I was super disappointed. I can tell it wasn't just a one time thing too, it's just the way they do fajitas. This is a good place for music on the patio, queso and drinks but for me, not a place I will return to for a meal. read more

The prickly pear margarita was really good. The shrimp is nicely seasoned. The portions are large. Its a nice local casual spot.

Had a private party here recently and everything was excellent. Alex was our bartender and did an excellent job.

This is really a dive bar. Food was ok. Service was ok. The inside has a black ceiling and dark grey walls. Definitely not your typical Mexican restaurant. read more

YALLLLLLLLLLLLLL. This place exceeded my expectations in so many ways. I was just going there for the happy hour margaritas (which themselves are like 10/10) but my boyfriend and I ended up getting food as well. I'm sooo glad we did! The fish tacos, 10/10. the barbacoa tacos, 10/10. the carnitas tacos, 10/10. and the chicken fajita tacos, 10/10. We got combo plates because we wanted to try all the tacos lol. And the sides: we got rice, charro and black beans, and the street corn. they were all so good ugh. anyways. if you're looking for a good place to eat, definitely try this place!!! read more

You cannot beat the drink prices here on a Friday night. Not to mention their frozen margarita is so good and only $5! Tried their guacamole tonight for a snack and it was delicious. Good customer service and fun place with live music out back. Hoping to come back soon to try their entrees. read more

One of my fave low key HH or dinner spots. Its becoming a very popular spot on Main Street so arrive early to neat dinner or weekend crowds. On weekends they have live music and it means the patio fills up fast. All the drinks are delish, but I recommend the mango Rita w tajin. read more

We are here Easter Sunday and it looks like a it's the cook and one other dude working. Took 8 min for dips to come out; they were damn good when they did come out! My chicken fajitas had a bit more charged bits then I would have liked but they were hot! The rice has decent flavor, add it to the amazing guacamole or beans and it's a winner. The beans were really well flavored and a great side or dip for the chips. If you are going to get the queso get it with the ground beef. At 12:00 the other staff showed up and the show got started! If you come make sure it's staffed. So...the food, minus the chicken fajitas, was amazing!! The service was slow but they only had one dude in the beginning. UPDATE: THE MIGHTY HAS FALLEN This gives me no pleasure but it's time to remove my 5 star review. I have twelve check ins and at one point this was my favorite place to eat. Over the past year the food and service has gotten worse and sadly today I have decided it's time I throw down my hat and never come back. Today our server didn't say hi and was unfriendly to us. The food was pathetic: black beans flavorless and cold, my queso topping was a solid mass and super salty, my taco had 1/2 the normal amount of meant, the rice was dry and cold. Our server never came back to ask how our food was or to refill our chips, drinks or salsa. This place has gone down hill fast and the reviews are showing it. The food is good but service is atrocious. On weekends you have to clean your own table to sit down, push through a line of people to order food at the bar, then wait forever and hope a server finds your table to bring your food. Pretty sure they forgot our order. read more

Great DJ night filled with fun and drinks. We sat in the BACK of the Alcove, this has an entrance from the back alley OR you walk through the outside garden and into the building extension. This "back" area is a secret spot and always filled with fun. I will tell you right now, if you are wanting a large meal, order the Molcajete as it is huge (a little salty for my taste) but really good with all the things from their menu. It is served in a large bowl and all the goodness is inside. Other notables: staff was great with working hard when they were slammed and the DJ nights can be fun. Great place but the male bartender in the outdoor area was super creepy with my female coworkers. Some out of pocket comments . We were gonna do karaoke there but left early because of him. Service can sometimes be hit or miss, but 90% of the time it's wonderful, and I think they're just understaffed like most restaurants currently. Giving 4 stars and would absolutely go back again. The food was amazing, atmosphere was inviting and the music at the lounge brought back so many freestyle memories; it made it hard to leave! Let's talk about the staff. The staff was friendly and nice. The downs about this place, you do have to order at the bar for your food and drinks. They will serve your food to your table. No big deal, many places do that. The con: we paid our tab and tipped in cash. It was such a good time that I added another $10 to the tab. We tabbed out because we knew we were still going to stay and wanted to separate food/ drink tab from just drinks. A bartender approached my husband and asked why we had only tipped $10? My husband told her we had included a cash tip with the tab and she made a face and said, "we normally get a whole lot more than that." Wow! Ok we still stayed and between each round we paid they must have made at least $150 off us in tips alone between all of us there. I know it's tough in that industry right now and we will go back. I wish I could say the Tex-Mex here is amazingly the best there ever was, but truthfully, it's merely just decent. Their jukebox, on the other hand, is astonishing! In fact, Alcove Cantina's jukebox will play just about any song you can think of. For instance, most jukeboxes don't even contain N.W.A.'s "Fuck tha Police", Ween's "Push th' Little Daisies", Aqua's "Barbie Girl", William Shatner's "Common People", or Weird Al Yankovic's "Amish Paradise". However, here at the Alcove Cantina, every patron can hear all of these tunes (and more!) for just a few quarters. read more

My fiancé and I are in Austin and decided to come to Round Rock for some live music and while reading through nearby places we stumbled uptown the Alcove Cantina. Walking in you really didn't know whether to wait or seat yourself, so we sat ourselves (which was the right thing!) We were quickly given menus, then asked about drinks, chips and salsa (SPiCY, but sooo good). We ordered the Queso Especial with out the meat. It was great, guacamole was spicy as well, but tasty. Our food came out in a decent time, enough time to eat our Queso Especial but quick enough to not be waiting. We got both got the pick three: [Mine] Pick 3, chicken tamale w/ jalapeño cream sauce and two barbacoa tacos, with charro beans and street corn. The tamale was delicious, the sauce was spicy and I couldn't finish it but my fiancé loved it. The barabcoa tacos were delicious! The beans were spicy (fiancé says they are bomb) but had a great smokey flavor. The street corn really helped cool the spice down. [Fiancé] Pick 3, Pork Tamale w/ queso, beef enchilada w/ queso and a beef fajita taco with refried beans and rice. The tamale was pretty good, it was a little dry but the queso made up for it. The enchilada was great! The beef was seasoned great. I do wish I would've gotten two tacos, it was definitely my favorite. The beans and rice were great! I also had their prickly pear margarita, it was sweet and tasty. It was pretty busy and service was great until the end, but someone came and got us paid out. :) The total was around $45 and we were both pleased with the meal, price and quickness! I normally love coming here but Saturday nights service was one of the worst I've ever experienced at any place in downtown Round Rock. I had to ask twice for our waitress to come to our table to 1. Just great us 2. To finish cleaning the table from the patrons before us. We had to wait 20 mins after the second time I asked for a waiter/waitress to come to our table, once she did we informed her the table was still dirty and she so went to put in our drink order and get something to clean the table; she was gone for another 15 minutes so we moved inside to see if we could fair better waiter/waitress just to end up with the same waitress from the patio! Her ability to serve us inside was exponentially better than when we were on the patio. The food was great but the service definitely left a bad taste in my mouth, of course I'll be back, I just hope to not get her as our waitress again. read more

We'd been waiting for a while to get our drinks so I stepped outside to ask a waitress if there was a self serve water station somewhere and she goes "Yep" and walks off. I went back inside I was saying something to my friends about it before I walked over to the bar to ask this little dude for a drink and some waters. Dude then sizes me up and asked "do we have a problem?" like he's some cop trying to intimidate me. Yeah... we have a problem lol your service is trash. Food was similar to the service. We came to downtown Round Rock on the Friday evening after New Year's Day. Our regular choices for downtown food were closed at 9:30 so we decided to try The Alcove Cantina. My only real complaint was that our server didn't have a very good "tableside" manner. She didn't really know the spiciness of various sauce choices and had no recommendations. She also seemed like she would rather be somewhere else. The food was okay. With so many good Mexican food places within a few miles, I would say it is pretty hard to be in the top 10%. This place was a little below that level. I did like that they had a mix and match entre selection menu, and the prices were very reasonable. I had a house frozen margarita and it was just okay. Not bad, but not outstanding either. We ate inside because it was a little breezy and cool out on their patio. Bottom line is this is good place when you are watching your budget because normally my tab (without alcohol) is about $35 for two of us. Here two of us ate for about $20 and that included a 5-6 oz frozen margarita and an ice tea. read more

I convinced my husband to go eat here, giving it another try, after we have noticed a decline in the food. His food was cool and had to be sent back. My chicken fajitas were bland and dried out. The food was below average but it was ok at least. We love the bartender, can't remember her name right now, but the one who got married in November. Her and Tony are really great! Even though we were overcharged for one drink yesterday as well. Wish I realized it while we were there. But the guy with the tats and ear gauging needs to go. Go work somewhere where you don't have to interact with people because it clearly bothers you to deal with people at all! Very rude. When a customer thanks you, acknowledge their existence! And you told us the tv didn't have a connection and the other girl turned it on for us two minutes later. If you are trying to run business away so you don't have to deal with people, it's working! You make it unpleasant to be there. We will be back for some live music and drinks but we give up on the food and I pray the rude guy isn't there. Y'all owe us a drink though for overcharging. Had to wait and ask for the only table available to be cleared. Then had to ask for silverware, menus, drinks and later had to flag the waitress down who was "hanging out" at the bar with two other bartenders to get our checks. Visited this fun little spot in downtown round rock with my wife and son. We split the fajitas and loved them! My son got a steak quesadilla and it was also outstanding. Can't give it five stars because they were a little short on help so service was a little slow, but the food was great and we will definitely be back! read more

The service was so bad it is hard to say anything positive about this place. I tried to make allowances as our visit was on Cinco de Mayo, still the high volume doesn't really explain the rude and out right awful behavior. Kevin was the only bright spot! The food was pretty decent though my order was completely wrong, margaritas were weak and too sweet, but Kevin tried to make up for the otherwise terrible experience.
