W O W ! Could not believe I was still in Staten Island, this new spot is a gem. Came on a busy Friday night, so I'd reserve just in case, but we waited for a bit at the bar and had some great, strong drinks (get the Mexican Mule or the Tijuana Tea!) while we waited. Apps were great and A+ presentation, had the corn and beef empanadas - which were so flaky and flavorful. The star of the night were our tacos and wow were we blown away. Carnitas, fish, and the DUCK MOLE tacos, don't miss out. And to close the night, we still had some room for some desserts, all of them were so good (churros, cookie butter tres leches cake, and the horchata flan). It's a pricey restaurant but trust me, the decor, service, food, drinks, and experience is worth it. If you're with a big group, definitely try a bit of everything, all of our dishes were just standouts. Their drinks were great and strong, but the pitcher isn't a must - I'd say get your own margaritas, less ice than a pitcher. I went to sofias taqueria thinking it would be just okay. Everyone talks about how great it is and as a lover of Mexican food I didn't think much of it. I must say, I regret not going here sooner. This place is amazing. The drinks were soooo good. The killer cacti, raspberry mango Margherita, Mexican mule, and red sangria were great. The secret guacamole was really delightful and the Mexican corn did not disappoint. The Carne Asada tacos were surprisingly delectable. I am not huge on steak tacos and I would order them again. I ordered a Raspberry Mango Margarita bottle for delivery. It's completely undrinkable as all I can taste is the strong sour margarita mix. Granted I ordered a bit close to closing time, but I was looking forward to drinking more Margarita since I ordered earlier in the day from another place. I don't see a reason to go here unless I'm with friends and want to sit in a pretty restaurant and listen to good latin music. Sounds like good reason enough but most of the time when I have dinner I'm alone, it's after work and am taking food out. And because of that I rather visit other restaurants, such as Mexican Cantina and Yolpaqui, which make delicious, high quality tex-mex at 1/3 of the prices at Sofia's. Don't get me wrong, Sofia's is delicious. I love their fried cod taco's, made with fine ingredients and delicious slaw, but they cost $20. I can get good fish taco's for $7 less at my other favorite restaurants. That being said, if you're with a party of friends, then please do visit Sofia's. It's a very lively, atmospheric restaurant that makes good drinks along with its delicious, but pricey food. read more

I have been to both locations. The food is fantastic at both spots. I have only ordered out so I'm not sure how the service is but take out was great. The staff was friendly and very welcoming. The pick up time was accurate. At the Bay Street location I ordered the fish tacos twice and both times they were very tasty and decent size portions. The fish was fresh and the flavors all came together. At the Amboy location I ordered burritos. I got the blackened chicken and the Adobe pork. Food: 4 stars Service: 1 Star Went to check this place out on a Monday evening with a friend as we both love tacos. The vibe is pretty standard for a Mexican restaurant. Our waiter came over and gave his recommendations as we received a basket of tortilla chips with a bean/salsaesque dip that was very good. We ordered the chicken empanadas to start and put in shrimp and fish tacos for our entree. We also ordered side dishes of black beans and guacamole. We read the starter guacamole had no flavor so we opted to not spend the extra money and went with the standard side of guacamole. About 30 minutes passed and we received no food. All the whole food was coming out of the kitchen to other tables. You could see our waiter looking over wondering why we had no food but he never once came over to apologize or explain what was going on. After about another 10 minutes he comes over and apologizes and says it's all his fault. Asks us if we want any drinks and we said no and he kept pushing for it to which we again said no. Maybe you could have given us another basket of chips the 12 times you walked past our table and saw we didn't have food. Our empanadas finally came out and there was just the right amount for two people to split. We thought they were good so that saved the experience. Our tacos came out about another 10 minutes later. We both give the shrimp tacos and fish tacos our approval. The taco shell is a hybrid of soft/hard. The waiter offered us a desert menu and we opted for the churros. The waiter had to return later and asked if what we ordered because he forgot. The churros were crunchy and warm and come with a chocolate dipping sauce. The churros were taken off the bill but the waiter was very patronizing throughout the whole experience and we don't know why as he is who dropped the ball several times. We did enjoy the food which again saved this whole experience. I might try again but might turn around and leave if we have the same waiter. I feel this experience was doomed from the start. I arrived for brunch and the place was empty. There were only four tables sat. The hostess tried to squeeze us into a two top that was wedged in a corner behind one of the sat four tops. We couldn't even get to the table. Then she squeezed us into another tight corner next to one of the other sat (loud) four tops, ignoring my comments about all the other open tables. Aside from this, service was slow and poor. Our server was very forgetful and not very attentive. The food was meh. I had a breakfast burrito that was very dry and lacking flavor. I asked for a side of sour cream which finally came out when I was near the end of my meal after reminding my server about it. By the time we had finished our meal the place was no more full than when we had arrived. All of those open tables were still open. So instead of having their current guests enjoy their experience they'd rather cram them into tight loud corners on top of other guests and save all of those open tables for guests that MIGHT show up (but obviously don't). Overall the food quality does not justify their prices or poor service. I would not recommend this place. read more

The staff were very friendly and nice and quick to refill drinks and clear our table. I do have 1 thing that bothered me. I booked a table on Open Table snd put that I wax there for my wife's birthday. I told the hostess when she sat us and told my waiter that it was her birthday and NOTHING was done. I know they do something cause about 15 mins after we sat down a table near us had a birthday and they got a little something done for them. Ok so disclaimer: I only had drinks and guac, so if you want to read about tacos this won't help! I went to this place during lunch to grab some drinks and some chips and guac. I heard so many great things about it and it's relatively close to my neighborhood. It is super cute and decorated really well! We opted to sit outside because it was super nice out, and I'm so happy we did! The outside is really quaint, with lots of colors, plants, and unique decorations. I ordered the spicy mango sangria while my mom ordered the guava margarita. We also got an order of their "secret" guac. And wow was everything great! The spicy mango sangria had a slight kick at the end, and the mango is fresh puree which is such a difference compared to concentrate. I did try some of the guava marg and it was also delicious! The guac was the star though, with the perfect amount of chunky avocado, spices, tomatoes, and salt. The staff was also really attentive and friendly, always smiling and checking in on us to make sure we were comfortable. We went in at 745 on a monday night and were seated right away. Parking was easy to find on a sidestreet. Apparently this is a project of someone who has multiple concept restaurants on the island. The decor was fitting and the music added a nice authentic feel to it. When we sat we got a scoville guide, a cocktail menu and a entree menu, all one sided. The waiter was a great upseller and recommended margaritas and guac. I had the ginger blueberry margarita that had puree and it was sweet and a bit thick for my taste but it was tasty. I ordered the shrimp ajillo for 26$ and the shrimp portion was ample, albeit the shrimp were a bit overcooked but the garlic sauce was delicious to dip the small portion of rice and beans in. My friend got the beef burrito and holy hell the meat in it was seasoned so well. Ill be getting that next time. We got the tres leches dessert and f#$% that's delicious. Better than any other tres leches i had in my life, the crunch on top gave it interesting texture. Ill definitely go back. Probably this week. So 4 stars for food because of overcooked shrimp. 4.7 stars for service, we had to flag down a waiter a couple of times for hot sauce and a spoon.
