We came here for their dinner service. The inside is charming, and the service was good/fast. The food was delicious, and the sangria was very good. We had tacos and guacamole/chips. We've dined at Sofrita's many times over the 14 yrs we have resided in F.H. but today was the worst service in all our visits. There were not many people outside,maybe 3-4 couples. It took 8-10 min for the server to bring water than 30 min for our lunch which comprised of one Tortilla soup,one chicken salad sandwich and a spaghetti squash entree. The waitress shrugged her shoulders when I asked where our lunch was. When we asked for a container it was only then she asked if we want refills of our empty water glasses. I understand server help is in short supply these days but if she would have communicated that to us we may have empathized with her. I saw the menu on yelp and really wanted the old San Juan tacos. I got to the location and they changed their menu last weekend. What are the odd. I had to purchase the full meal which isn't ideal for a single person. It wasn't made how I am used to receiving the same plate elsewhere. Usually it's pulled apart. This dish was swimming in flavorful sauce with a handful of potatoes and carrots. Unfortunately the veggies weren't cooked all the way through but it was still good. It came with 4 corn tortillas as well. I couldn't really use them because the meat and sauce was so piping hot lol. Now for dessert, the sugar free lemon cheesecake is amazing. Haven't had the best experiences. Take out food is tepid at best. I've called and complained about food not being stored under a heating lamp when waiting for people to pick it up, especially since when you go in to pay for your food- Only a certain employee can ring you up, so your food loses heat while just waiting. I've had my food handed to me in an old box lid, a giant paper bag, or no bag or box. After complaining, they stored my comped food under a heating lamp- This of course was after the manager repeatedly told me "Bummer" for my bad experience..... I have a really simple solution........ Hold yourself to the BARE MINIMUM standard of serving WARM, not even hot, but just warm mediocre food. Since ordering there 2 more times, my food's never been stored under any heat source. Can't fault her because she was alone with a full dining room. I ordered the Cuban sandwich but it wasn't a Cuban. Over cooked flavorless shredded pork with a thin slice of ham one small slice of house made pickle. Very bland, no flavor. $12.00 for the sandwich but no sides not even fresh fries so I ordered fried plantains for $8.00. They had no flavor. $20.00 plus tax and tip for bad food. Food was only so/so. Shrimp Tacos had nice sauce and flavor, but there wasn't much to them. I was still hungry. Quinoa Salad (added Salmon) looked impressive, but had no taste...really needed seasoning. We took it back home to add some taste. This place also isn't cheap $75 with tax and tip for 2. I stopped by here a couple of Saturdays ago with my wife and her parents for lunch. We were visiting Fountain Hills and checking out the fountain for the day whenever we decided that we needed lunch. Sofrita happened to be on the road that we were driving on and had good Yelp reviews and so we stopped. They have both indoor and outdoor seating and make you stop outside their outdoor seating to wait for a hostess. Since it happened to be busy whenever we made it there it created a bit of a line on the sidewalk not really allowing anyone else through. We first tried to get outdoor seating but after being told that there was going to be a wait, took the immediate indoor seating. The inside of Sofrita is definitely interesting. There is a religious candle on every table and then if you see the bathroom, well, it's sorta creepy. Thankfully the candles aren't too noticeable until after you head to the bathroom and everything else besides that feels modern and clean. For lunch on this day I decided to go with the firehouse fish tacos and then since I was worried that they weren't going to be enough also went with the Brussels sprouts. The menu described the Firehouse fish tacos as tilapia, crispy fried rice gluten free tempura, spicy chipotle slaw, corn tortillas and mango salsa while the Brussels sprouts were described as pineapple, roasted red peppers, creole spiced mayo, green onion and coconut dressing. Whenever our food came out, I wasn't ready for the massive portion which was the Brussels sprouts. After all this place did call itself a tapas and I thought the $11 that they cost was just a steep price. Nope, that wasn't the case and the plate was simply massive and had to contain at least a pound of Brussels sprouts if not more. They were tasty too as they were roasted and covered in pineapple while the coconut sauce added a little sweetness. The bottom of the massive bowl also had pineapple juice in it and I enjoyed dipping the sprouts into the sauce to get a little pineapple tartness. My tacos were a little less successful. I can't say that there was anything wrong with them per se, but with a name like firehouse and the spicy chipotle slaw, I thought they were going to have a kick which they were clearly missing. The tilapia itself was good enough and the breading was nice and crispy. Finally the mango salsa added a little sweetness which I enjoyed. In the end I just wasn't that satisfied with them and am really glad I ordered the Brussels sprouts. The bottom line for me is that I would come back here again in the future. Even though the tacos were a bit of a miss for me I really loved the Brussels sprouts and would be interested in trying some more of their vegetable dishes. read more

I've ordered takeout from this restaurant a few times in the last month and each time has been wonderful.

Mr. P was visiting a friend over in Fountain Hills, and had me search for something he could pick up for dinner on the way home. Among the normal burger joints and chain restaurants, I saw this little local place named Sofrita. Sofrita means sauteed in Spanish. I'm up for local sauteed Spanish goodness! The restaurant has a streamlined website, complete with online ordering. Mr. P said that the restaurant was very small - a cute Spanish bistro with a few tables and an incredible smell. He seriously wanted to stay there just to watch and smell! Having recently been to Spain, it gave a feeling of family and comfort, Spanish decor and nostalgia. It brought him back there, with decor reminiscent of our travels. I ordered the spaghetti squash cazuela. You get a fantastically roasted half squash, sauteed with fresh tomato, lemon, mint and parmesan. There are normally onions as well, but you all know how I feel about the devil apples! This squash had mild flavor and perfect texture. Mr. P ordered the seafood paella. He was blown away by this perfect pan of rice. The paella contained salmon, shrimp, calamari, green mussels, onion, and of course the yellow rice. The rice was noticeably cooked with the seafood stock, giving it a tremendous flavor. It wasn't at all fishy, but rich and hearty, pleasing to the palate. He was raving all through the heaping container. I also ordered the garbanzos fritos as a snack, and snacks for work the next day. What a great choice! We received a huge takeout tin of the glorious little beans, which were perfected with a little sea salt and Moroccan spice. They weren't too spicy, yet they packed flavor. Still warm, they were absolutely addictive. I also ordered a side cup of chicken salad. This isn't just any chicken salad. Almonds and cranberries make it sweet and salty, light and comforting. Another great choice! So, one slight oversight on our takeout visit. I ordered online and prepaid. I ordered a diet coke and an iced tea, and also a dog treat from their menu for our newly acquired old lady dog. I got a call from the restaurant from a very nice gal, who noticed that she forgot a drink, and didn't actually have the pup treats. She also had given Mr. P his drink, but gave him regular coke - he is diabetic. So I had to call him to tell him not to drink it - but he could tell right away. No biggie. She advised me that she would look into the process of refunding the items, since we live so far away. To my surprise, Sofrita refunded our ENTIRE ORDER! They really didn't have to do that! It was so very good, that we both agree that we would make the trip for this fantastic bistro. Take.my.money! Please, patronize this fantastic restaurant! The food is beyond amazing, and I can't wait to try other items. The service, even though small details were missed, was great, even after the fact. We will be back! read more

Stopped in about 45 minutes before closing. In the patio with my dog. Waitress brought out water for me and my dog at the same time. Dog bowl was sparkling clean and was much appreciated - I did t even have to ask. Had the homemade chips and salsa, beer battered shrimp tacos which were great. Waitress brought out a wrapped milk bone cookie for my dog! That was an unexpected treat. They did not make me feel rushed at all. Very Happy with service and food. read more

Should be 2 1/2 stars.. Very sad we wasted our time coming here. We were doing a staycation seen this place had pretty good reviews, really not sure how. Our waitress did not have the best of attitude,- seen that when we pulled up and she looked over at us while taking somebody else's order a rolling her eyes that should've been a red flag but we still came in. Has to be some of the worst salsa and chips we have ever had. we got a bruschetta board have to say almost one of the worst we have had we asked for salt it came well after we were done with the whole thing Madisyn sure if that would helped. Beers could've been colder.... When we were ordering it felt like we were bothering her we will never be back here.... Cozy place serving up Latin and American-Mex tapas and tacos. We walked in with friends. Felt like I was south of the border with the rustic decor, quaint and cozy seating. Street-side patio seating outside too. We gobled-up on tasty & hearty pork verde and delish beef ropas tacos, crunchy crunch crunch tortilla chips & salsa (not enough spiciness), IPA on tap. We were hungry after walking around the car show in town. Service was really good! The menu does not say anything about the sourcing of ingredients, like local or farm fresh versus dropped off by some 18 wheeler semi hauling industrial food chain frozen foods. Just sayin, I like it fresh and like it more when restaurants support local hard-working Arizona farmers --- there are many excellent farm markets in the Scottsdale / Fountain Hills vicinity --- been to some great farm stands. To me that is worth a STAR on any review. Suggest that Sofrita list purveyors or at least talk to how it is prepped, i.e., like from scratch or out-of-the-zip-lock bag. I digress! I ate! This was our first time in. Very disappointed. The food was not hot, just barely warm. Bland, no flavor. Vegan street tacos totally boring, tortilla was not fresh and fell apart when I picked it up, so had to eat with a fork. My husband's Moroccan chicken tacos were also bland and didn't even come with any type of salsa, which he had to ask for, and pay for! I would say the best part of the experience was the bathroom! You don't have to travel far from AZ to take a mini vacation to Puerto Rico. SOFRITA owner, Carolyn, has brought her home city of San Juan to Fountain Hills, and incorporated flavors of the Caribbean with Spanish tapas. We had the pleasure of meeting her today and trying some great items off of the menu. The tacos are good-sized and had generous portions of tender and flavorful chicken. They aren't your typical tiny street taco; although they do offer the smaller versions of these for happy hour, which is everyday from 3-6. Everything we had was fresh, colorful, and full of flavor. I'm looking forward to going back during the cooler months to enjoy their patio with a view of the town's landmark fountain. This is a great spot for date night and a solid choice pre/post FH event. This review would go better if it weren't for two things. The most annoying first: the table top where we were seated was sticky. Two: I don't know what type of place sofritas is trying to be. We had chips and salsa to start. The chips were ok but the salsa was super bland. About the only thing I could taste was the cilantro. We asked for "hot" salsa and were brought a small (tiny) dish with two different salsas. The red one wasn't bad, but the green one was very strange. I asked what it was but the server didn't know. However someone said it was "Lebanese". Ok. Lebanese. The tomatillo salsa that came with the "street tacos" was the best of the bunch. My guest had the street tacos and she said, quote: "they all tasted the same. Beef, chicken, pork, black been, or vegetable. All I could taste was cabbage". Street tacos are cabbage tacos? Where? Apparently, here. I had the cubano, which was just barely ok. I'm used to cubanos with mustard and pickles. This one had sliced cucumbers. No mustard that I could tell and definitely no other condiments either. Which is unfortunate. The pork was pretty dry. Very disappointed because it looked like it would Be wonderful when it came out. Except for the weird garnish of chopped lettuce and tomatoes. (I didn't understand why, it made the plate look weird). All that and over thirty dollars later, we left still hungry and confused. What kind of place is this? Spanish, like we were told it was? Cuban, like one of the dishes? faux Mexican? Lebanese? Flavor free? Tofuganic-gluten-free-range? I still don't know. I get the impression this is more of a bar than a restaurant. Update: Since moving to fh, I've come here a few times. There have been some new additions to the menu which I'm happy to say I really like. For example. The tacos ropas viejas, which is sort of like a shredded beef in ranchero sauce. It's not ranchero sauce though, it's "ropa vieja". Which is Cuban. Anyway. It's very flavorful and the new update to this taco is that it has papas and fried matchstick onions. Flavor explosion in your mouth. Regarding the table tops, I've not experienced the sticky situation since that one time. I'll say, "I like this place". One of the better restaurants in fountain hills. Definitely unique. The menu, the decor (check out the baño!) and the "santería sacred lounge". I really like the concept of that even though sometimes the owner seems to get unnecessary flack for it from uneducated "experts". read more

This is a very small and very unique restaurant. The menu is Latin Inspired and some tapas items are offered. The plates we tried were large portions that could be shared and all the tables are set with extra plates for sharing. I had the Ojitos Chinos - Basically it was a grilled chicken salad. The salad was made with crisp fresh greens, canned mandarins, LOTs of Carrots and Lots of crisp tortilla strips. The chicken on it was very tasty but slightly dry. I thought the cashews were very good they seemed real sweet but had a spicy kick at the end and the ginger dressing was good too. Overall it was a nice salad that I would order again but would ask for them to go lighter on the tortilla strips. My husband had the Chef's Taco Tasting Platter. It was five different tacos with two salsas. I didn't taste the tacos but my husband said he couldn't taste what taco was chicken from the beef and pork and liked the vegetable tacos best. (that is very unusual for him) He also said they had too much raw cabbage in them for his taste. I found that service was attentive and friendly. My husband and I really want to like this place, but the food is sooooo bland. We started out with the guacamole, chips, and salsa, and all three were extremely bland and had no seasoning. Then I had the grilled salmon tacos and my husband had shredded pork tacos, and nothing had flavor. All the food looked nice, but it just was BLAND. Went here the other night and I ordered the chopped salad, the pimientos, and some red sangria. The pimientos, which are cooked peppers, were SOOOOO good! There were a few spicy peppers in there, which made this appetizer flavorful. The chopped salad was the usual deliciousness. I got it without cheese and with the lime dressing instead of the creamy chipotle dressing they put on it. In the past I have had it with the chipotle dressing and it's reallllllly good. The red sangria was good, a little sweet, but the fruit was plentiful and it was refreshing. I like sweet though, so it's all good. read more

I of course checked out Yelp to see what's good in the area since I've never been to Fountain Hills. I love tapas so I was thrilled to find this restaurant. The restaurant is really sweet and cozy. The hubs and I came here for lunch and it was pretty quiet. The menu changed a little from what was shown on their website. There were a couple things I was looking forward to trying and they didn't have on the new menu. Break down on what we had and my thoughts: Spiritual ginger soda -good and refreshing Papas Fritas - good but I've had better Street corn - eh Chicken tacos - portions bigger than expected and just ok Bruschetta- Date Nut- unique & i liked it PB&J- good Cilantro jalapeno hummus- good but spicy Avocado with bean salsa- least favorite Overall, ambience great, service good and food was just ok. We stopped for lunch after doing a few estate sales. We had a wonderful table outside with a view of the fountain. The Guacamole Granda was absolutely perfect with wonderful homemade chips to dip with which me and my husband shared along with the avocado bacon turkey club sandwich. It was all delicious! The food is great. Fish tacos were really good. The margaritas are huge, the Bloody Mary's are good. The patio is lovely. The service could be improved. We asked for water so many times and never got any that it became an ongoing joke for the weekend about not getting water in the desert. I think they were just understaffed, like everyone right now.
