A family-owned and run authentic Hunan restaurant. There's the grab-and-go lunch area on the 1st floor, and an more secluded dinner dining area on the 2nd floor. Quiet atmosphere which is great for conversations. Service was by the family members and they were the some of the most hospitable I've encountered in a restaurant. I went with friends for dinner, and dishes were a little slow to come out, though it's likely since we did have fun with ordering some custom dishes while chatting with the owner on Hunan cuisine. It reminded me much more of dining with relatives than dining at restaurant. If you love Hunan food with an amazing flavor, I don't think you can go wrong with their grab-and-go lunch. Walked into Four Kings on a Saturday thinking my boyfriend and I would get seated without a reservation... but turns out that was a blessing in disguise, as we walked a block over and stumbled upon this unassuming restaurant called Sohunan. Little did we know we would have some of the best Chinese food we'd ever have (& we frequently travel to Asia) The owner was welcoming and gracious. The service was prompt and efficient. But the food was the highlight of the night. The food was delicious, fresh, and authentic! The dumplings were perfectly steamed and juicy inside. I also like how it was cooked in its vinegar soy sauce. The stir fry beef and the chow mein were packed with flavor. We wanted to try their orange chicken and it did not disappoint. We ordered 4 dishes. The orange sauce chicken was extremely oily and sickeningly sweet. The Kung pao chicken was just okay. The fried cod fish was extremely salty and the fish tasted stale. The worst was the chicken fried rice - it was inedibly salty so we sent it back. The portions were on the small side given their price. The server was friendly and efficient but unfortunately, what matters most is the food. So for health and value reasons, we don't recommend and won't be returning. read more

I highly encourage you try the authentic real deal dishes because why else are you eating hunan cuisine? I got the spear ribs. The spice tastes amazing, it has a tiny bit of numbing spice which I love. I'm not good with spicy food and I let the workers know, and they made the dish to enjoyable spice level for me! The pictures are EXTREMELY deceiving. Photos of the interior do not look remotely like reality. Came here during lunchtime on a whim while visiting a tourist attraction nearby. Picked the wrong place. We were seated relatively quickly, but the service was not up to par. Had to ask twice for a couple of waters. Each protein entree was filled with mostly veggies. Extremely overpriced for each (ex. pork belly was $17.50; barely any lean meat). Costs $9 for "three bowls" of white rice put into a single bowl. Don't waste your money or carbs. read more

Just as SF is in the process of re-inventing itself, Henry's Hunan has re-imagined itself perfectly as Sohunan. I love their willingness to let go of history and modernize, while not at all abandoning what made their prior iterations excellent to begin with. Expect the same Henry's dishes -- fresh and high-quality ingredients, served with spice and fire to last all day -- in an updated setting with a take-out feel on the first level and a very clean and comfortable dining area on the second floor. Sohunan has cracked the code for staying power -- a great starting formula and a willingness to evolve it to keep pace with current tastes and styles. We happened to walk past Sohunan yesterday. As soon as I realized it's an offshoot of Henry's Hunan, I just had to check it out! Henry's has been around for over 20 years, and has multiple locations in San Francisco. Sohunan streamlined Henry's original menu to only its most popular dishes; and designed the space to be more modern and welcoming. Best of all, it's still family-run, so when you spend money here, you're really shopping local and small. I ordered the curry chicken. The recipe has indeed stayed the same. A new business in the Financial District? Chinese, Hunan, you say? A. It's a rebrand from the previous business of Henry's Hunan, a popular spot that I never tried. B. Yes, it's still Chinese specializing in Hunan cuisine. The menu is pared down from what I remember. In reading the name, it didn't click until I said it slowly several times. Coming here on a Wednesday around noon, I was the only customer, or so I thought, when I walked in. It's an interesting setup where you walk up to the counter to order your meal, telling them whether you are dining in or taking out. After saying "dine in", he asked me, "Upstairs or downstairs?". I decided to explore further and said upstairs and he pointed me to a doorway to the left. For seniors or diners with mobility issues, downstairs dining seems to be the only option. After walking upstairs, I was pleasantly surprised by the setup and attractiveness of this dining room. There was one large table with eight or nine diners against the right wall as you face the windows. There are also five or six four-top tables along the left wall. There are restrooms both upstairs and downstairs. I settled in at the 3rd table from the window and a lady offered and brought me a glass of cold water. The cashier/server also generously offered me more rice if I needed. This is normally named twice cooked pork at other restaurants. As I left, I purchased a hot and sour soup, large to go. They describe it as a spicy broth with eggs, tofu, wood ears, and bamboo shoots. This is a non-traditional version as it leaned on the tangy sauce and red pepper flakes floated on top. The flavor reminded me of spicy pickled radishes often stir fried with pork as a noodle topping or stir fry dish. I'm used to a milder version with sesame oil and using black vinegar and soy sauce. The upstairs dining room is a more comfortable dine in space with the modern decor, artwork on the walls, the windows facing Sacramento St., and hardwood floors and wood tables. As I left, a few more diners flowed in upstairs and, after ordering and getting my takeout order, there were diners on the wall side counter downstairs as well as a high top and table. A meal delivery person waited at the entrance. I will be back in hopes of recapturing those old time flavors, likely the smoked pork belly or noodles with meat sauce. *** Historical note - The Chung family's original restaurant location recently became a historical landmark under different business ownership, House of Nanking). You could say that the founder Henry built the reputation of that space which House of Nanking continues to perpetuate. My husband visited the downstairs area for a weekday lunch and loved it so much that he brought me and the kids for dinner. The upstairs area is beautifully designed, tastefully decorated with original art by the owner's brother and handmade furniture and remarkably spacious given the restaurant's prime location. After spending time there, we are already thinking of upcoming occasions when we can host friends in the space. The food is incredibly flavorful, with a distinctive smokiness that can only be achieved by a skilled chef and restaurant equipment. We really enjoyed the smoked pork belly, bitter melon and pork and egg fried rice. The owner also made us a simple yet satisfying off-menu dish of sauteed fresh greens, which were a great companion to the hearty meat dishes. Last but not least, the upstairs area features a raised wooden platform by the window that our kids loved exploring. They watched the cars, buses and pedestrians passing by on Sacramento St. When we spoke with the owner's brother, who helped design the space, he shared that he made this area especially with kids in mind, to give them somewhere to spend time during the meal. What a sweet and considerate thing to do for families! How family friendly this establishment is! When I was working in the financial district, I came to this location of Henry's Hunan many, many times. I'm so happy to see that it's still here, freshened up and apparently run by one of the sons. The new menu is smaller than the old, but many of the traditional dishes are still here, including my favorite, curry chicken. I do miss, however, the meat pie and Marty's special. Super super yummy! I highly recommend everyone try this FiDi location out. I normally hate schlepping to the FiDi, but this place is worth it. And there's a parking garage across the street too (typical overpriced FiDi one, but hey, it's there). More importantly, if you're fan of spicy Chinese food, this is a great choice for you! My work recently had a party here (upstairs can hold up to 40 people), and came again with my family. Both times the food was super delicious! It's so great to find authentic Chinese food that has depth of flavor. And you can taste that the ingredients are top notch too. And they don't use MSG! That's tough to find and a rare gem for anyone sensitive to MSG. In addition to their Sohunan classics, which have been around for decades, this location also includes a few authentic Hunan Chinese dishes not found at other Sohunan of Henry Hunan locations. And while most of their menu is spicy, but most dishes can be made non-spicy (except for the special menu items). If you're into the spice, they make their own pickled jalapeños and peppers! One of my favorites is the Salt and Pepper spicy beef. This is truly spicy, so not for the faint of tongue. But it's got such a great sour and salty taste that I can't get enough. But you're chugging water as you eat it as it definitely leaves a solid burn in your mouth. My kids loved the Hunan dumplings! They don't skimp on the filling and each dumpling felt very hearty. It's supposed to be spicy, but I asked for the spice on the side, and they totally did it! My kids could eat it and I could scoop the spicy chili I wanted from a side dish. There are several more dishes that we ordered that was delicious, including their pork belly, sweet and sour chicken, mapo tofu, sautéed noodles, etc. But the ones that really stood out for me are the Salt and Pepper spicy beef and their dumplings. The owners are kind, thoughtful, and really care about the food they are serving. And they're related to the original Sohunan of Henry's Hunan, so they are carrying on their family tradition. This is a great place for lunch, to bring friends, or even for a party as their upstairs room can hold around 40. Good to know as most restaurants don't have this ability. First of all, I was a huge fan of Henry's Hunan. The restaurant they had on Sansome Street was one of my favorite restaurants, period. The branches of the family have successfully continued the Henry's dining experience. However, SoHunan is sadly disappointing. Not disappointing to Henry's standards, just plain ole disappointing. It doesn't please me to write bad reviews, but after spending close to a Benjamin on a handful of their dishes, nothing was even close to good enough to bring me back. We ordered the usuals, that should be home runs for any Chinese restaurant, but all were either too sweet, syrupy, under fried, or just plain ole below average. I really wished to be a regular customer, but I sadly I won't be coming back. read more

I rarely used yelp but I have to copy my reviews to here as I am so angry. I wish I could give this place zero stars. Our experience was nothing short of a disaster from start to finish. We walked in and were completely ignored by the staff for a solid thirty minutes. No greeting, no acknowledgment--just a bunch of employees standing around chatting while we awkwardly waited at the entrance. Plus, there was NO WAITING LIST! When someone finally noticed us, the hostess seemed annoyed that we were even there. Not a great start. We were seated at a sticky, unclean table, and the menus looked like they hadn't been wiped down in weeks. We should have walked out then, but we foolishly gave them the benefit of the doubt. That was a mistake. The service was unbelievably slow. It took another 15 minutes just to get water, and when it finally arrived, there was a suspicious floating object in one of the glasses. Gross. The host barely spoke to us, just grunted and walked away every time we tried to ask a question. Then came the food--if you can even call it that. We ordered a few classic Hunan dishes, expecting bold, spicy flavors. Instead, everything tasted bland, oily, and incredibly salty. A new, smaller outpost of the venerable Henry's Hunan family of restaurants. This location caters more to preorders and grab and go, and offers a more limited menu than the sit down locations. I had the hot and sour soup and Kung Pao chicken to go and it was every bit as tasty as the Natoma location that I go to several times a week. This location does not offer the World's best salad, their Chinese Chicken Salad. I could eat only their chicken salad for the rest of my life and be very happy.
