Run, don't walk to Sol Grill! We had one of the best dining experiences ever. Great location in Newport Beach just a short walk to the pier. The ambiance was comfortable and friendly. We had lamb and the filet and both were tender and juicy. The mashed potatoes and the vegetables were perfectly cooked. Extensive wine list, but skip it and go straight for the Sangria. They have both white and red. I had the red and it was to die for. I would go again just for the Sangria! Our server Misty was so friendly and open. Had a reservation and the table was waiting, although others who had not reserved a table had to wait. I was thankful for their honoring of the reservation. The restaurant is very small and quaint. Mirrors make it feel much larger than it is in reality. The wait staff consisted of just one gal and a water boy but they had everyone handled. The whole operation seemed to be in sync with the other. The food was well timed, the food was delicious. We had the meatballs as an appetizer, very good, and wife had fish while I went with the steak. All was cooked to our liking and to cap the evening off, a solo guitarist was strumming and singing some great music. We had just arrived from the midwest and it was a great relaxing dinner after our hectic travel. Would go again. Great for couples, I'd be nice to the patrons and leave the screaming urchins at home. My boyfriend at the time now fiance took me here " to listen to his friend and his daughter play live music". Little did i know it was a surprise he was the one playing the live music and he proposed to me here! It was about 45 of our closest friends and family. Misty was AMAZING she was taking all the orders bringing all the food out and it was just perfect service, she was even in on the surprise! Not only was it an amazing experience but the food is just delicious, i had the swordfish and veggies and it melts in your mouth, omg and the meatball appetizer is so good! Went to this restaurant to celebrate my sister's birthday. Marissa, the waitress, was AWESOME. She went above and beyond to make sure we had a good time. The food is absolutely delicious. Been going here for years. We love the intimate atmosphere... love the live music... super friendly staff and of course good eats! When the inside is packed we sit outside in front of the restaurant... watch all the peeps roaming the beach! This was my first time to this restaurant. From the outside it doesn't look that impressive. But once inside I understood the allure. It's one of those local spots with homestyle food, eclectic decor and regular customers. We had the popular meatballs. Yep, as described by other patrons...salty, spicy, juicy....We ordered more. Absolutely fantastic night. We came down here Valentine's Day evening without a reservation with our fingers crossed that we'd find something. Despite being completely booked, the owner welcomed us in and made room for us. And man are we thrilled she did! We started with their sangria, which was delicious and generously sized. Then we had their legendary filet mignon meatballs--trust me, they are worth every penny. We immediately regretted not getting four more orders of them. Then onto the main course where we shared the pesto pasta, which is made to order and out of this world. Probably the best eating experience either of us had in a long, long time. Reading positive reviews on Yelp, I chose Sol Grill for a date night with the hubby to celebrate his birthday. Service, Food, Drinks and Atmosphere did not disappoint. Everyone was accommodating and friendly. Checked-in to Yelp and got my free Sangria, which was refreshing. As suggested, we had the Filet Mignon Meatballs and Parmesan Garlic Bread for appetizers, very tasty. Hubby had the Lobster Ravioli topped with Shrimp and it was delicious. Although, they did forget the Andouille sausage in my Jambalaya pasta, they were quick to fix my dish and it was just ok. Nothing close from an authentic Cajun restaurant, but it satisfied my craving. We will definitely go back to try out the other items on their menu. read more

The wife had the Halibut and I had Pork Ribs. The Halibut was dry and tough. The Pork ribs were tender but slathered with way too much dry rub and poured-on BBQ sauce. The house salad was good. So my friend just bought a house in Venice beach and we had heard about Sol grill in Newport beach from a mutual friend of ours, so we decided to try it out! Let me tell you it was so amazing. Such a cute place, it would be really romantic to take a date there some time. The owner is not afraid to get her hands dirty that's for sure. She helped serve us and was very friendly and welcoming. The customer service was 10 out of ten. The food was very well prepared and super tasty. The presentation was amazing. We ordered a few things on the menu and all the food was top Notch. We ate here during the busy Holiday season in December. I had purchased a voucher for dinner for four people which included a glass of wine. I am not a local so I knew nothing of the place except what I saw on their website. I knew it was a relatively small place but the website pictures were attractive and the menu looked enticing so I purchased the voucher not really knowing what to expect. When we arrived, even though the place was small, it was packed. It was obviously a popular place with the locals. Even so, our table had been reserved and was waiting for us. We were warmly greeted by the owner who was also waiting table. I was fully expecting to be advised as to what entree's we could have with the voucher, and was pleasantly surprised when she told us that the voucher was good for any entree' including the filet Mignon and other of the pricier menu items. The prices, by the way, are not inflated and are in an affordable range for this type of fare. They serve a complimentary bread with dipping sauce which was delicious but we also ordered some of their Parmesan Garlic Bread and it was outstanding. Really buttery and loaded with garlic and Parmesan. Of course we all ordered the fillet Mignon, except for my husband who ordered one of the halibut dishes. I am not a fish eater but he raved about it. I had a bite and had to agree that it was delicious. I think it was the one with the creamy marinara. The filets were superb, absolutely perfect! I am not usually this exuberant about filet Mignon as I've only had it really done right a handful of times. It can be a difficult cut to prepare correctly unless you really know what you're doing, as it is thicker and easy to under or over cook. All of us who had it agreed that they were excellent, perfectly done to the point of melt-in-your-mouth tenderness, and to order. Medium rare was medium rare and not medium. We shared a Pot de Crème for desert which was also deliciously decadent. It's a very neighborly and cozy atmosphere with a quiet elegance. They even have entertainment certain days of the week and special events like two for one glasses of wine on Tuesdays, Kids eat free and no corkage fees(which means you can bring your own wine!) on Thursdays, and Sangria Sundays (they make their own). Happy hour is every day 5-7. I am only sorry that we cannot frequent Sol Grill more often as we are out-of-towners. However we will be back to Newport for a stay over on our way to Catalina in March, and we will be sure to make this a destination point for dinner! Please check it out for yourselves. A great place.
