This restaurant is a must!!!! One of my favorite places to go in Orange County. I take all my friends there, it never disappoints. My go to is meatballs, mushrooms, and SANGRIA! You will want to drink the meatball gravy... everything on the menu and it is all 10/10. Not to mention the best service by the greatest people. We all appreciated the fact that Soo Grill was open and was able to cater to our party! (Thank you) Everyone enjoyed our cozy private room (but with shared restroom attached) and the food ~ oh my! How have I never reviewed Sol Grill? This is a favorite to order the lobster ravioli, the shrimp that's nice and spicy, their salad or the ahi tuna. They also make a heavenly sangria that personally was a little treat when we were all ordering in during lockdown in 2020. The food is good but their portions of an additional order of rice comes in a container that you'd put sauce into. Other than that one drawback I like it. read more

The Sol Stroganoff was good but very salty and, Grandma Jill's Meatloaf was burnt and had so much Rosemary, that's all you could taste. I ate 3 bites and couldn't eat any more. When I said something to our server, she said she was going to talk with the chef. I never heard anything back. When I got the bill, they charged me for it. Because of that I will never go back. Came here for dinner with my bf after it being recommended. Honestly overall we were a bit disappointed with the food... We started off with the garlic bread and ahi chowder. The garlics bread was o.k, the bread it's self is on the thinner side and it's kinda dense. But the ahi chowder was pretty decent. We were most disappointed with the mains we ordered. My bf ordered the filet mignon medium rare but he cut it open and it was cooked medium. Not only that the meat itself was VERY chewy, not tender at all. This place has moved here from the base of the pier with the same owner. It's cool even with the limited tables because of the Covid-19 restrictions. Parking is ample right now, but not sure what it looks like during the usual season. This was my 61st birthday dinner and it was just two of us sitting in the sheltered "outdoor seating" closest to the highway. The Sangria was really good, and mine was the champagne mixed version. We had the Bruschetta as an appetizer. My GF had the steak plate and my choice was the Sol Salmon. Wow, they were great, and reasonably priced for a spot right on the PCH. Sadly, I cannot recommend this restaurant. It was highly rated so we used a Yelp reservation to book for an hour later. When we arrived we stood at the door for a while before being taken upstairs to a second level seating. Upstairs there was only one other large party and my family of 4 with 2 children. We placed our order and got water and bread relatively quickly. After that the experience unfortunately went bad. We waited for 45+ minutes without being checked on. The waitress checked the large party multiple times, brought them cake and refills, but completely ignored us. We were never offered more water or bread or given the courtesy of a follow up. While waiting I took my 6 year old daughter to the bathroom downstairs. After using the facility she went to wash her hands and was seriously scalded by the hot water. I couldn't even touch it myself. I reported the incident to the woman behind the bar who acknowledged they KNEW about the hot water. I recommended a sign or they get it fixed so no one else gets burned. They gave me a bag of ice for my daughter's hand. We went back upstairs to wait for dinner but by then my kids were crying how hungry they were and still no one came so we decided to leave and walked out. They chased us to our car in the parking lot and said our food was "almost ready" and that they were sorry because they had "a lot of catering orders". Wow! My husband and I had an amazing meal at this local gem. We've driven by before, but never looked into their menu. We enjoyed the meatballs, house sangria, swordfish, Caesar salad, and ahi chowder. Everything was next level delicious and we loved every bite. Can't wait to take everyone we know here! There's three key ingredients to making a great restaurant. First and foremost, it has to have great food. The ambience should make you feel comfortable. The service has to be excellent. The Sol Grill has all three of these in abundance. Without question, the heart and soul is it's owner, Misty. But first, let's rewind a little to give some context. I've been frequenting Sol since the previous location and had grown quite fond of that space and location. So when they moved to it's current location, I was afraid that the charm would somehow disappear. I'm happy to say the vibe is as friendly and welcoming as it always was, and more. It is a little different, and in all the ways that matter, much better. For example, you can tell the new space is designed by people who understand what's wanted and needed for both patrons and staff. While the old location was essentially one giant room, it was lively to a point it bordered on cacophony. In the new location, the space more sectionalized, but it never feels cold or distant in it's layout. This new approach cuts down on the ambient noise from every direction and makes for a more relaxing evening, not to mention physically comfortable. I still remember how tables had to be pressed together to accommodate larger parties and one had to navigate around them to just have a seat. The new Sol has plentiful seating and space, yet still retains the feeling of an intimate setting, a balancing act not many places can pull off. The staff must love the new layout as well because food orders are no longer brought from the rear, but served up though the kitchen pane. And the kitchen itself is now laid out more efficiently for the amazing chefs. New to the location is an upstairs wine bar which is perfect for group styled events and the like. While food can be ordered upstairs, I recommend the downstairs if you're on say an intimate dinner date, as the upstairs is a bit more lively. There's also a banquet table area located upstairs as well separate from the wine bar if that's more your speed with larger gatherings. I know what you're thinking. That's all well and good, but what does that have to do with the dining. Well, it's serves a point that Sol was designed with ambience in mind. Years (years!) of finding what works best and such, and the result is the new, and much improved, restaurant. The restaurant biz, for lack of a better word, is brutal. So it's a testament to Misty and her wonderful staff have made a success of a place in Newport Beach. But how? The food. When I frequent Sol, I usually stake my place at the end of the counter (it's not a bar area per se, but I suppose it can seem like one because of the wine bottles) and this place gives me a unique vantage point to see all the orders being readied for the servers. And I've found myself asking "ooh what's that?" probably to the point of being annoying. I can't help it. Everything coming out from the kitchen looks awesome. Now admittedly, I've only had a few items because I tend to keep returning for similar or the same things when I go there. Personally I lean into the seafood and pasta (try the lobster ravioli!), but I've been meaning to dive into more selections. Oh and as I'm sure others have written here, do yourself a favor and get the meatballs or ahi chowder appetizer. You won't ever forget it. The meatballs are the siren call that get me into the door. The wine selection is plentiful but the star of the show is the sangria. Red or white sangria (I like the red because I'm sorta old school like that, but the white is not to be dismissed!) and it pairs well with really anything. (PS, be sure to check in with Yelp and get a complimentary one). I suppose what I'm trying to point out here, from being a longtime patron, is consistency. I'm literally never disappointed when I dine here, and that's because they deliver on my expectations, consistently. This sort of goes back to my point above about the years of finding what works and what doesn't, and the staff have made something quite remarkable here. A consistent experience. Misty, the owner, is an absolute gem. While each of these points above (food, ambience, service) would be fine on their own, she is the tour de force that keeps it all together running smoothly, all the while appearing completely effortless. I have no idea how this wizardry is done. The staff she's chosen are good natured and knowledgeable, and one never feels like the place is rudderless if she's not there herself. A reservation isn't strictly needed it seems, but it's probably recommended if you have a few more people in your group. I would visit on a Sunday occasionally and am surprised there's a decent turnout on a day you'd think most people would be in for the night. I guess they too heard the siren call of the meatballs. There's low volume, live background entertainment on certain days which adds to an already unique ambience as well. Parking is easy and plentiful. Enjoy! read more

They accommodated us perfectly. They have a lovely dining room, easy to hear and charming. They also have some private areas for groups. The food is Fantastic, my favorite is the arugula salad with perfectly done salmon (every time). The meatloaf and bolognese sauce and meatballs are something special. My oh my. If you're looking for a friendly, consistent, and relaxing restaurant this is IT. My boyfriend and I can't stop raving about this place. Every single time we go we enjoy it more than the last. Misty is such a genuine kind hearted sole who will recognize you and make you feel at home from the second you walk in the door. Not only is the owner and wait staff beyond amazing, the atmosphere is romantic and cozy. It's a smaller restaurant so the staff is so easy accessible and isn't annoying or overbearing. Onto the food. It is probably one of the most consistent restaurants we've been to. Every time we order the same thing and it is always the exact same. Nothing bugs me more than when you find an item you like at a restaurant and every time you go it taste different. We order the house sangria to start and it is so delicious! For appetizers we get the ahi tuna and grilled shrimp. The tuna is perfect! Not fishy at all and is season perfectly. The grilled shrimp comes with this mango salsa that we can't get enough of. (My boyfriend has asked me so many times to try to duplicate it at home. I can't lol) and the steak is always cooked perfectly and so tender. But believe it or not my favorite part is the broccoli. It's still firm and has a little crunch, not mushy and overcooked like most places. Overall this is our favorite restaurant. Every single time I get asked where to eat, this is where I tell people to go. Also the people that I have sent here love it just as much as I do. I cannot say enough good things about Sol Grill! My family and I (7 of us + 2 dogs) came here to celebrate a birthday. In the reservation notes, I mentioned the dogs and Misty texted me directly, saying outdoor seating was not available but we would get a private room at no extra charge so the dogs could join. While at the restaurant, all staff we interacted with was lovely. Everyone was excited to see the dogs too! The food was delicious. We got the Sol Salad and mushrooms to start. The entrees were salmon, swordfish (3), chicken picatta, lobster ravioli, and stroganoff. Everything was *chef's kiss*! We brought our own cake for the birthday and it was not a problem at all. We ended up sharing 1/4 of the cake with the staff because they were so kind all evening. We did not feel rushed and really got to enjoy the evening and family time. Thank you, Sol Grill! Happy Hour Review: Sangria: Excellent red sangria given the price point. 5/5 House white: It is a chardonnay - I regretted ordering it. 2/5 Mushrooms: A bit plain but I actually liked the sauce as a dipping option for the complementary bread so I will say 4/5 Ahi tuna: Good portion, not anything truly inspired but a great deal for a happy hour! Went well with the sangria also. 4/5 Shrimp: Slightly challenging to eat- I didn't care for the salsa that came with them but it was nice to see some seafood on the HH menu for a decent price. The shrimp themselves are not large and the tail was tough to peel - I don't know how to rate this dish because for all that I was pleased to see something new and different on a happy hour menu - it was such a pain to peel them - but they were medium quality medium sized shrimp. I dunno - shrug. 3.5/5 Bruschetta: Decent bruschetta the bread was a teeny bit tough for my taste but the balsamic was decent. Don't know if this is the wine talking but it went really well with my buzz so I will give it 5/5 Went here for happy hour with a friend who was in town and staying in Newport - it was a nice little patio for happy hour and I was able to do a same day reservation on Opentable (I'm from Chicago so I like that security). The whole staff is wonderful, even the hostess on her first day working there. We got the sautéed mushrooms and parmesan garlic bread, both perfection!
