We celebrated my friend's Bday dinner here a few weeks ago. We were a party of 5 and were given a table in a side room to the left on entrance. Am not much a pasta fan, and luckily the menu had several seafood options. I ordered the grilled Salmon and veggies and paired with a glass of Chardonnay. We had the absolute best NYE here! We had a reservation weeks prior and I called the night before to see if she could put us in the private back room, but wasn't sure if we were able to snag it. Back again and even more pleased than before! First, the owner Misty called to let us know that our request for an outdoor table couldn't be accommodated but that she could seat us on the second floor away from a party of 6 (room capacity 30). Other restaurants would not have called to give us the option and simply surprised us when we showed up. As it turned out, the second floor is a beautiful former yoga studio with light hardwood floors, a bar and large windows. A light and airy space. Misty proactively observed that we were looking at the Yelp special (free sangria if you check in) and that we were about to use a coupon for free meatball appetizers (available if you sign up for their emails), so took the initiative to order those up for us while we were perusing the menu--assuring that we wouldn't have to wait hungrily. The complimentary bread and sangria arrived swiftly and both were excellent. The bread was fresh and homemade and a delightful focaccia with a fresh olive oil and balsamic dip. The sangria was a generous pour with the right balance of sweetness and alcohol. The (six in an appetizer) meatballs were like a beef stroganoff with a wonderful creamy sauce. For main courses we got the cioppino and the lobster ravioli. Both had huge portions and were super flavorful (two adults could have split each cioppino). We ended up taking out leftovers. Despite a bustling evening crowd, Misty was very attentive and responsive. Will definitely return a third time, and recommend it to friends! read more

Nothing bad but nothing great. Meatballs came in a sauce that seemed like a beef bullion cube (with that distinct taste) and a splash of cream. They were alright. Parmesan garlic focaccia bread should have been baked longer and came with a very diluted marinara. Ahi Chowder was pretty good with a lot of chunky vegetables and a creamy tomato base. Mushrooms were not that good. They didn't even trim the tips off the stems of the mushrooms, so they had this crunch to them. It seemed like they cooked the mushrooms separately from the sauce and then combined them last minute. As such the sauce didn't really adhere to the mushrooms. Kung Fu Shrimp was more like an attempt at Jambalaya however the sauce was like tomato soup with red hot sauce mixed in. I didn't like it Fettuccini Bolognese was a big bowl of plain fettuccini topped with a sauce that was almost as though they took the meatball dish and it's sauce and minced that up into sparse tiny bits. It was not a rich thick meaty sauce at all. They have happy hour from 5pm to 6pm so you can try a variety of their dishes at a discount. They also have no Corkage fee on Thursdays. And there's live music on Thursdays. read more

Going to Sol Grill was a must during this girls' trip visit to Newport/Laguna Beach. My friends and I had a very special night here. We met Misty, the owner, and she was so warm & welcoming and the best hostess. My friends loved the ambiance and beautiful dining rooms. I requested to be seated by the windows and we were granted a perfect spot in the sunroom dining area. My friends ordered: -Grandma Jill's meatloaf. 5+/5. I ordered this and it was wonderful again! -Dijon mustard chicken 5+/5. My friend said that was great tasting with the gravy and so different and delicious with all of the ingredients. -Newport Linguini 5+/5. My other friend said that it was a super collection of sea food and the broth and linguine were amazing. We all raved about the deliciousness of our entrees. My meatloaf was tender and covered with a fantastic gravy. The side vegetables of asparagus, broccolini and whipped yummy potatoes completed the plateful of comfort food. Everything about Sol Grill makes it a unique and special place to have dinner. I will have friends and family return here again! Highly, highly recommend this lovely and cozy restaurant.
