I haven't been back to Sol for quite a few years, but two friends and I decided to give it another try. Speaking from the standpoint of a handicapped friend, the main door is so large and heavy that it is impossible for a person using a walker or wheelchair to open. It is very disappointing to find such a situation these days. The space is as pretty as ever and our server (Emily W) was efficient and quite charming. The presentation seemed a little less fussy than in the past and everything was delicious. My friends enjoyed their short rib tacos a lot. Sol serves a basket of whole tostadas instead of chips plus both salsa and a bean dip. These were great and very addictive. I ordered the Ensenada plate of fish tacos. It was very good except for the miniscule portion of seafood which was buried in a mountain of slaw. I would have enjoyed the dish much more with double the serving of fish. The bits of fish I did receive were very crispy and tasty, though. Street parking in North Cherry Creek gets more and more challenging; however, there is a parking ramp just south of the restaurant across Second Avenue and another ramp just north of the restaurant off Columbine Street. Suggested this spot for a casual dinner "date" - the restaurant's ambiance and impeccable service definitely outshined the cynical conspiracy topics brought up by the human across the table. He's a bit skeptical about most restaurants, so I gave myself an internal round of applause for introducing him to this gem in Cherry Creek - he loved it! Great prices, flavorful food (many options - from healthy to spicy and everywhere in between), wonderful drinks (try the frozé!!), and top-notch service (our meal was delivered promptly after we ordered...which worked out, as the table conversation was a bit dry to say the least lol). I have been here a few times but our most recent visit here with a few friends was disappointing. We were a group of 6 with a toddler and when we entered and asked for a table the host told us the wait would be around 45 mins which we thought is ridiculous because we saw so many empty tables. We then told her we would wait and she then mentioned it would be a 15 min wait as she did not want to overwhelm the servers. With in a couple mins she told us our table is ready.. I don't understand if she did not want to give us a table or what! When we got the table, we expected slow service because of the previous comment about overwhelming servers.. we ordered a bunch of things along with table side guac to which we were told they were out of guac. We ended up ordering mushroom queso for the table.. the servers came back to with an order of guac.. there was so much confusion with the food orders. I really did like the CDMX taco and the agave shrimp taco but after so much confusion it was frustrating. Sol Cocina is in the heart of North Cherry Creek Shopping Center, so not very easy to find, but when I did The employees were friendly and efficient. I ordered a Tacos Vampiro and it was about the most amazing taco based dish I ever had both in visual presentation and in taste. Even the complimentary chips and dip were amazing. large, fresh and crispy and they were dusted with what tasted like a churro seasoning, the dips were a black bean paste with pepitas and the other was a spicy liquid based dip. The whole restaurant interior oozed with class and sophistication, Id like to come back to this place and try more of their menu offerings. read more

It had been a while since we had been to Sol, At least since before Covid. Typically we go to La Loma for Mexican food, but SOL is closer so tonight I suggested we try it again. Huge mistake. Our waitress was friendly, but that was the only positive thing I can say. Our $14 guacamole was the size of a small scoop of ice cream and our dinner took over an hour to get to our table. I ordered the beer-battered shrimp taco ($11) was 2.5 pieces of small shrimp with iceberg lettuce, chopped tomatoes and onion and sour cream this dish comes with what they call one large taco and no sides. My son and husband ordered shrimp and chicken fajitas which came out cold and not with your typical sides. The best looking dish of the night was my younger son's kids chicken tenders, but still disappointing that a kids meal doesn't come with any side. The manager did come by at one point to apologize for how long the food was taking, but did nothing to try to rectify the situation. I received the bill at full price. Which was $110, add to that the Wendy's I had to purchase for my family after we left, my dinner at SOL cost me $150. We will not be returning. read more

We found this place on Yelp as one of the top rated Mexican cuisines in Denver and I can say, it was really good but coming from a former Texan and someone who's lived in Mexico, this was a just at par Mexican food experience. The food had great flavor, the drinks were tasty, and the options were abundant. But the service was definitely struggling, and completely understood with it being Thanksgiving Day (whence the 4-stars). Our drinks didn't arrive until 5 minutes after our meals arrived, and we ordered them a good 20 minutes prior to ordering food. That was a huge disappointment. We ordered the naked guacamole and it was...guacamole. What made it a tad unique was the house made chips, fried whole corn tortillas sprinkled with I believe; chili powder, salt, and paprika. They were tasty just by themselves! Of course first at seating we were given house made salsa and bean dip--which were both delish. All but one of our 6 diners ordered the duck taco a la carte in addition to our main plates. This dish was both unique and exquisite! The duck by itself was the way to go--see below for my comment on the tortillas. To bring to light how "par" this restaurant experience was, I didn't even take note of what everyone ordered for their main dishes. I myself, ordered the grilled fish taco and my husband ordered the battered fish taco. The grilled fish taco was filled with flavor and there was the perfect seasoned crust on the skin of the fish. The fried fish was soggy by the time it reached the table, and when we broke the fish apart, it was more undercooked batter than fish meat--that was very disappointing. A huge disappointment for all of us who ordered tacos was the fact that all of the tortillas were super undercooked, nearly raw. They all still had the grainy almost brittle texture--which means it wasn't cooked enough. Just 2-3 more minutes on the hot iron skillet, the tacos would've been perfect! [Fun Culinary Fact: When using corn tortillas, a well-cooked tortilla can hold "liquidy" condiments like pico de gallo without getting soggy up to minutes to serving! If it's still floppy and cracking in the center when folded--it's not ready to load!] Coming from a former restauranteur, if you stay open for holidays, make sure you can be staffed enough to handle the flow of customers. We could 100% tell that our server was overstretched and could've used some help from managers or another server or two. During the entire 2-hr experience, we saw our server and 1 other runner/server the entire time. Not once we're we visited by any managerial staff member. read more

WOW WOW WOW. Really enjoyed Sol. We planned to go for brunch, but upon looking at their lunch menu there was too many good options. I went with the El Volcan, which is something I wouldn't normally pick, but after seeing a picture on Yelp I figured I'd give it a try. Boy did it not disappoint. The sauce was so flavorful and the chicken was cooked to perfection. The service was great, we instantly had chips, salsa, and black bean dip upon arriving. While staying in Denver for work, I ate here for lunch and dinner almost every day. Food is A+. I had the steak fajitas, vampire taco, chicken tortilla soup, carnitas, barbacoa and the wagyu steak. Disappointing experience at Sol tonight. Ordered a pick up meal for the family. I ordered the fajitas with carne asada. Disappoint #1 they did not include the tortillas in my order, kind of a key piece so I had to call and go back to pick them up. #2 when I got there to pick them up they include a measly 3 street taco sized corn tortillas, for an entire fajita entree! Now IMO and experience at a wide variety of quality Mexican restaurants, this is completely inadequate and unreasonable skimping. #3 When I get home to enjoy my meal, which looks great at first, the carne asada is absolutely raw and not in a good rare steak kind of way. It is raw and chewy. I am not at all opposed to a great piece of rare prepared beef that is well seasoned and tender, but this was not that at all. Really inedible. Anyway, definitely puts a bad taste in my mouth for the restaurant that has previously become a favorite spot for pick up and dine in for us. I think they could use a re-evaluation of the flavor and quality Sol is putting out. Bummer. read more

3.5 Sombreros Sol is a pretty restaurant with fantastic service. However the food is really Gringo food. Almost every dish lacked flavor and texture. Even the Margaritas were not very flavorful. Highlights of the meal were the free chips, bean dip, and Salsa. My carnitas were really bland. Tortillas were store kind ...and not great store kind. I like em when there is an abuelita making them by hand My wife's Chile Relleno was bland and the Mole sauce was not that great...and yes I have had Mole all over Mexico. They made it work for us though and even thanked us for our patience a few times. The food is good, but nothing spectacular. However the super high prices will certainly make you believe the food should be memorable. It's been a few years since we were here last and based on our current experience with the food and prices I can't say I'll be coming back. My husband and I went to Sol Mexican Cocina for Denver Restaurant week and it was such a a great experience. Our server, Felicia, was AW-MAZING!! She was attentive, gracious and great with suggestions that did not disappoint! To start, the naked guacamole was so flavorful and the coconut calamari with spicy sauce was delicious! Both were very good, as well as their chips and salsa that they give each table. Our server was friendly and attentive. He made sure we were taken care of for the whole dinner. My complaints would be that it was pretty hot in the restaurant. In early July, it was warmer inside than outside. So it made it difficult to fill up on food. It's also more expensive than your average restaurant, but definitely better quality. So, you're paying for that. Other than those things, the experience was great. Did someone say "Happy Hour"? Too few Denver restaurants celebrate happy hour nowadays, so thank you to SOL for offering it through Mon-Fri, with some good food and drink options. For me, the stand out meals here are their tacos (poblano and mushroom; sweet potato and black bean!) and their salads (beet and watermelon!). I was surprised my friend agreed to dine in during COVID. Well, perhaps because SOL Mexican Cocina had a temporary tent/trailer kind of thing so we're pretty much outside (the inside of the restaurant looked so much fun though. Damn you, COVID!) The Chips, Salsa and Vegan Bean Dip they start you off with would definitely leave an impression for anyone! The chips can't get more "homemade" and I wouldn't know the black bean dip was vegan if it didn't say so. Salsa had a nice consistency and kick. My friend had a la cart tacos, she let me taste one of her shrimps (they were like tiger prawn size!) very yummy. I couldn't be more happy with my King Salmon, Kale, and Quiona Salad. Well, if tasting too healthy is a flaw (wish I had "bad-for-you" dressing to choose from instead of the default lemon-y vinaigrette but hey, that's just my flaw) The salmon could not have been cooked better - it was crispy, well done, on the outside but soft and half cooked on the inside. Just the way I like it. The homemade root vegetable chips adorning the salad was incredible: if you plan to take the rest of the salad home, make sure you finish those chips so they don't go soggy!!!) Is SOL a chain?
