So i live really close to sol and i love going there. Shelby at the front counter is really nice. I love the sol bowl with the cilantro ranch dressing. The salsa bar is great because you can mix your salsa and i love corn salsa. The atmosphere is great too. Family friendly and the service is always quick and excellent. read more

Blah. It was our first time to Solar and our expectations were based on good Yelp reviews. Our experience was not favorable. We arrived and the line was out the door yet a quick survey showed at least 1/3 of the tables were empty. 20 minutes in line to order. Had a beer still no food. Went to get another beer and had to stand in line again and waited for patrons to read the wall menu while they ordered. Food arrived finally. Huge disappointment. My fish tacos were nothing more than breaded fish sticks with lettuce. My wife's taco salad was a glob of pork on top of a bed of romaine. Our guacamole and chips appetizer arrived after our food. The Pico de Gallo was tasteless, weak and saucy. Very bland dishes withe unappealing presentation. One and done with Sol. read more

save your Pennies. friend asked if they has fresh brewed iced tea, they said yes, in fact they didn't. she ordered enchiladas and they burnt them and said "if they taste funny we can remake them". why would they let that out of the kitchen? i got toastada salad and ordered the hit salsa which was supposed to come on the side, but was doused on the salad, so not sure what the meat even tasted like because it was all just spicey. patio seating is very loud with traffic noise. this all happened once we figured out which door to use. confusing and sub par to say the least was or experience. only good that came is i didn't take hubby there or it would have been doubly unpleasent. cannot compete with taco wagon. read more

This place is great! My husband and I went here for lunch and we loved it! The food is sooooooo flavorful and fresh. The place is clean, very nicely decorated and the staff was really nice and even recommended a few of their favorites. I had the chicken enchiladas and they were wonderful! The enchilada sauce was so fresh and tasted like home-made. My husband had a carne asada burrito. I had a few bites and it was great, too. It was loaded with meat, cilantro, cheese, rice, beans. Mmmm! They also have a self serve salsa bar. I think we tried every kind and they were all delicious. The prices are also great. Everything's $6 or $7 dollars. We've tried this serveral times and just can't get into it. The food is bland and small portions. We've tried tacos, burritos, tostadas and nothing was impressive. I know its not supposed to be authentic Mexican, but it still should have flavor and flair. For fast casual type food like this, Chipoltle is better...and we aren't "chain restaurant" people! Where do I start, the wait staff was very un-professional, stale chips, we had a party of 16 and all the orders came out at different times, in fact one order came wrong and cold and by the time he got his food everyone else was done eating, I ordered fajitas and they were the worst I've ever had, cold tortillas, and they only give you two!! Food was good and the person who took our order was great. The young man we asked to help us move a small table was rude! My friend asked if he could move the small table next to the one were sitting at. She told him she was unable to because she has a bad back and he told her he so did he and we should sit in the other room. I explained that she can't hear in that room. He rolled his eyes and thew the towel across the table . After rolling his eyes at me again, he attempts to scoot the table and tells me he can't. I help him scoot the small, 10 lb table over a foot. Third eye roll. He then tells me they only move table if you make a reservation, rolled is eyes again and stomped away. We told the young man at the counter any he said he was sorry but we didn't see a manager so I'm sure that's as far as it went. This happened to us on Sunday June 23 about 1:00. We didn't get his name but he's the one with dark blonde hair and was wearing it in a small ponytail. read more

I like their food a lot but the last two visits turned me off big time. Right behind the cashier, there were couple of waitresses standing and chatting and one of them had to sneeze. So she picked up a napkin and sneezed in it and cleaned up her nose but she never went to the restroom which was right behind her to wash her hands. She went about her business. I was waiting for the order to go and if she had picked it up and served me, I would have declined the food. This is the second time I noticed employees not washing their hands in my last 2 visits. A very lovely and moderately priced little restaurant tucked away from all the bustle and traffic in Chico. The location is a bit of an inconvenience for me, as I live on the opposite end of town; however, for good service and well-made food, I might drive the ten minutes to Eaton road and Esplanade just to experience it again. I was especially impressed with the staff. We were checked on at the end of our meal by a guy I believe to be the owner of the place. It was nice to be acknowledged. My boyfriend got a vegetarian burrito and he claimed it was the best he has had in a very long while. I, on the other hand, haven't quite pinned down my 'chosen' dish yet. I think my greatest criticism for this restaurant is that the food reminds me too much of La Cocina Economica, like the baja sauces and salad dressings. Similarly to what other reviewers have said, I get that this place isn't asking to be considered authentic when it comes to Mexican cuisine, and I think that is my problem, it's forgettable, reasonably priced, but forgettable. read more

Was excited for a new mexican place on our side of town so the hubby and i went to give it a try. Its really nice looking inside and they have a nice patio. Very clean, and the cashier was very nice. Our food was very tasty and some of it was unique, love the So-Cal burrito. Salsa bar could use a little work, and I thought it was weird that you have to pay for chips- if you are going to charge extra then they need to be out of this world, fresh, hot, housemade chips. After returning home we realized that we may have gotten overcharged, but thats a mistake that could happen anywhere. All in all pretty darn good, unique flavors and selection for Chico, and we will probably try it again soon! read more

We have been going to Sol since they opened and normally have excellent service and food until just recently. Food from the kitchen is still very good but there were tons of flies swarming the salsa bar. And when I called ahead to pre order our food since I was coming in alone with my two small children the guy answering the phone was rude. This was the same man at the counter who I paid when we got there to get our food. Our orders was wrong and he refused to help me get two highchairs despite the fact that there were 3 of them standing there. Very disappointed in their customer service. read more

We went here and had shrimp tacos a shrimp burrito and a couple beers. The price was good, the food was excellent and the back patio was really cool with the waterfall running on a hot day. I will definitely be back. The only reason I dropped a star was because they didn't put guacamole on the shrimp tacos which it says comes on them on the menu. When we asked the counter girl she said gauc doesn't come on the tacos. They should change that from the menu. Other than that everything was great. read more

I wish that I could rate this higher, because the food is pretty good here! It's one of the few So-Cal style (fries in your burrito, etc.) Mexican restaurants we have in Chico. Their menu has various options with fresh ingredients. The staff is generally friendly. However, after 7 years in business, you'd think they'd have it a little more together by now. I would still recommend this place if you are flexible on time. Do not go here for a quick bite to eat, (at least, not without calling 30+ mins beforehand) because you may find yourself waiting for 45+ mins. Also, if you are getting food to go, make sure to check your order before leaving. (Look through your food thoroughly.) Otherwise, ingredients may be missing, or vs versa, there might be ingredients you don't want on your food. I'm not sure if it's the wait staff, or kitchen, or both, but my order is incorrect half the time. This is very frustrating, especially when I pay extra for something such as adding avocado. Sol is a tad pricey for what you get. They tend to skimp on the protein and veggies, while they'll load you up on rice and beans. So, if you've got time and money, feel free to leisure your way over to this pace and try it out. The Cantina bar inside on the left side is clean, and I hear the drinks are good. (I don't drink, so I can't verify for you personally.) I like the outside patio. It's a nice environment, especially at night. Although, if you're getting food for your lunch break or grabbing dinner real quick before a movie, this is probably not the safest bet. To sum it up, I would say... thumbs up on food, but thumbs down on service. read more

Worst service In Chico ca. I've only been to this place twice and will definitely not go back. The first time I visited this place was about two months ago. The order consisted of a chicken burrito and two fish tacos. After inquiring about our order several times, Our order finally arrived to our table after over an hour wait. Yesterday 11/19/18 my significant other and I decided to give this place a second chance. The service once again was Terrible. Our order (chicken burrito, carne asada nachos and two fish tacos) took 45 minutes to get to us (this was a to-go order). The worst part was that I saw my order sit on the window for over ten minutes. I decided to ask about my order and the gentleman bagging the orders appeared to be very confused. There was a carne asada nachos on the window, the gentleman took it to the back, put in a to-go container and bagged it with my order. At this time The fish tacos had been on the window for about 15mins. I asked the gentleman if the tacos were still good, he said that I could check and see if they were good or he could replace it with new ones. In fact the tacos were already cold. I asked how long it would take for the new tacos to be ready as I didn't want to wait for another 45mins. He said it would take less than five minutes. The gentleman took the tacos to the kitchen and after five minutes he walked out with "NEW" fish tacos. When we arrived home, the burrito was cold, the nachos were cold and soggy and the tortillas for the fish tacos were hard and the fish tacos were really bad. Terrible service!!!! read more

I tried the Enchilada plate with carne asada last night and it was the worse enchiladas I have ever had. The plate as a whole was overwhelmingly salty. I woke this morning feeling sick from what consuming too much salt. The black beans were almost inedible. The enchilada itself was 80% cheese and 20% meat. The environment itself was dirty; tables had not been cleaned and the floors were littered with trash. And there were flies everywhere. Another thing, I did try some salsa from the salsa bar and noticed that the hotel pans were not actually sitting on the ice, rather the ice had melted down and the pans were hovering above. Also, there were gaps where there should have been hotel pans in place to help retain the cold. I hope that the salsa was below 41 degrees but its hard to say. It's too warm not to be paying more attention to that. Food poisoning is a real thing. Lastly, one of the supervisor/manager/lead went right from using the cash register to adjusting water cups without washing his hands. For the price, I could have gotten a better bang for my buck from a taco truck. To the cooks and/or management, taste your food. If it's too salty, don't serve it. read more

My wife and I only live a few blocks from Sol. It has become our go-to for a good, quick, inexpensive meal in a pinch. I have yet to try something on the menu I havent liked. I almost always go with the SoCal Burrito. I like spicy and I do tend to pour quite a bit of Tapitio hot sauce on my mex food, but last night, thinking a little more on the healthy side, I opted to swap out the carne asada it comes with for chicken, and asked for as hot as they could make it. I opened it up and added guacomole, and dug in. The Tapatio was on the table but I never touched it! This was the most incredible burrito I have had in years! I was sweating and breathing heavy by the time I finished this master piece! Way to go Sol! You should add the modification to the menu- it was incredible. I am still thinking about it today! Great food! We usually order the steak, mild salsa and their southwest dressing for the tostadas is highly recommended! We usually ask for a side of it for anything we order now! Their corn salsa is my favorite item, I mix it with their pico de gallo and put it on everything. Their beans and rice are fantastic as well! They have a casual atmosphere, a great app that you can install on your mobile device to order to-go on the fly, a large area for banquettes and receptions (a beautiful space!) and friendly staff! Yummy horchata, clean salsa bar, clean bathrooms, plenty of seating, indoor and out. Good for kids, plenty of high chairs. Smallish space where you place your main order at the counter, it can get a little crammed when you're ordering during their busy times (right after youth soccer games!) overall great place, clean and friendly! read more

Loved this place when it first opened. The food was awesome, esp the SolCal burrito. Service is slow. There is usually a line, but hey for decent grub that is cool. Always call in your order and it moves faster. This place is near my house so we used to get take out from then frequently. The last 8-10 times we have been in we have noticed a decline in quality. They start slowly deceasing the meat and increasing the rice in the burritos. They think no one notices but we do. Overall not bad though, just find ourselves going elsewhere more these days. read more

For the most part, Sol is awesome. I gave it four stars because the food portion size is not always consistent. I usually get tacos or a burrito which are both great, however, in both cases I've received really skimpy meat portions. The burrito I get as there is a lot of other ingredients but when there is not much meat in a taco, all you're really left with is tortilla. My bf also has had the enchiladas and the cali burrito which he says have been good. I like the carnitas as my meat of choice; very flavorful and not at all dry..this is also a version of healthier mexican which is a nice option to have. read more

Thank you Sol for being a loyal friend since you came into town. You have come to my aid when I've been too busy and tired to cook. I always know I can count on your fresh and delicious food! While my husband continues to try different menu options, I order the same thing every time - tostada salad with pinto beans and chicken. I know, to those readers who have never had it, it sounds bland and boring. But wait! They use the freshest produce (tomatoes, cilantro, onion), and always generous portions of incredibly flavorful meat. Plus we LOVE all the options at the salsa bar which we have used to perfect our dining experience. We also always get a bag of chips and quacamole to go (we eat at home since we have an energetic toddler) and if my Husband and I are lucky our 1 1/2 yr. old will share the quacamole with us. She considers the chips & guac HER dinner (she's obsessed), but luckily the portions of our salads are so generous that we can share our meat, beans, and veggies from them with her and still have a full belly in the end. One of my favorite parts is that I can call in an order ahead of time and it is usually waiting on the counter for me when I get there 10 minutes later. I highly recommend SOL Mexican Grill to everyone! The food, service, and atmosphere are all great. It's not the largest space inside, but the outside patio is nice as well. I saw in previous posting that a patron has had experiences with some of the young girls having bad attitudes. I too have experienced this once, maybe twice, but I go there often and have had great experiences with the staff all the other times. Definitely recommend checking this place out. I keep reading that people weren't impressed with the enchiladas or chile rellenos. Neither was I, so I tried the tostada salad.
