My first time eating here at Somenya and I was throughly impressed. There was a line into the restaurant but I waited less than 10 minutes. The seating area was clean, comfortable and inviting. Me and my friend ordered the chicken karage and shishito peppers as a starters. We both ordered the beef sukiyaki udon for our entree. The food took a while to come out, but when it did it was piping hot--just how I like it. I'll chalk the wait up to Somenya being a new restaurant. I'm sure it will improve with time. The chicken karage was very crispy, tender and juicy. It came with a nice dollop of kewpie mayo and served as a delicious appetizer to our meal. The shishito peppers were alright. Unfortunately, they were not too crispy and lacked a kick of spice. The beef udon I got was terrific! I wish they would give a little bit more noodles though. The soup was a little spicy but I loved that! I will most definitely come back to try more items, especially the soba noodles. read more

I liked it! My bf and I both got the spicy cold with beef, one with udon and one with soba. I preferred the udon for the springy bite, and I felt it soaked up the sauce better. The sauce is citrusy and the chili garlic crisp is super flavorful. I really enjoyed my bowl, my only complaint is that the tempura crunch is not crunchy at all - even immediately upon serving it was already soggy. THE BEST MEAL I'VE HAD IN BOSTON. We've gone to over 10+ restaurants during our time in Boston and this is hands down a must go. We got the Beef Udon (hot) and the Spicy Beef Soba (cold). The noodles were texturally lovely -- perfectly cooked and chewy and the sauce/broth was so flavorful. Service was also amazing! They stored our bags and suitcases away so we could sit with more room. They also brought us extra plates to share. Overall, incredibly attentive, kind, and considerate. The actual shop is also super cute and cozy. Perfect environment to bring friends, wind down, and enjoy a yummy bowl of food! Holy cow this place was good. The food was spectacular, the ambience is AMAZING (so cute), and the service is just absurdly good. I didn't get any pictures of the jelly desserts but they're ridiculously cute and yummy so make sure you take a look at the dessert menu. I got one of the cold soba dishes and it was fantastic and every ingredient tasted fresh and high quality. My boyfriend got the curry udon and his was great as well, the udon is so good! My only problem is that I have chopstick performance anxiety me and the service was so quality that I was trying to hide my mediocre chopstick skills from them as I splashed myself in the face with dropped soba and roe. I recently went to Somenya in Boston's Chinatown area and had a great meal! I shared the Beef Sukiyaki Soba and the Chicken Katsu Curry Don. I really enjoyed the Chicken Katsu Curry Don!! The chicken had the perfect layer of breading that was flavorful and crispy but not too thick. The chicken itself was juicy and tender. This paired so well with the warm Japanese curry sauce and rice. 9/10 dish! The Beef Sukiyaki was also nice and flavorful. It wasn't a stand out dish to me but a very nice and filling soup dish that will warm you up in the cold Boston nighttime. I fonund the soba noodles to have a nice chew to them as well. We had to wait a very long time to actually get seated (around 1 hour for 5 people on a busy Saturday night) so I would recommend getting there earlier in the night for dinner. I was super excited to see a new soba place open up in Chinatown and my first experience today did not disappoint!! I wish I grabbed a pic of the interior because it's so cute and cozy. I have a feeling this is going to be a really hot lunch spot. The location is on a corner that's easy to miss but I definitely recommend trying it out. The spicy beef cold soba dish reminds me a bit of a popular udon shop in Porter sq *cough cough*. I don't think this dish can compete with that spot however I really enjoyed the vibe of the space and the food was overall tasty. I also tried the agedashi tofu appetizer today. It was tasty but boi was the portion small for 10$. I'm looking forward to coming out and trying other stuff on the menu soon! read more

It's super easy to pass this little hole-in-the-wall on the edge of Chinatown, but definitely worth a visit! I actually never tried soba before, so I was excited to hear of this place. The interior is absolutely adorable here - it's designed almost straight out of somewhere in Japan. Even though we visited on a Friday night, it was quiet and relaxing. The staff were also super kind and welcoming here. Our waiter recommended the soba to us (since the restaurant also offers udon noodles for all their dishes, we weren't sure which to choose). There are also a variety of hold and cold bowls, so it was difficult to choose. I ended up ordering the roasted duck soba, served hot. The broth was delicious and light, perfect for a calm cold evening. The duck was also perfectly cooked and tender. I added some chili powder and it really enhanced the flavor of the dish. The noodles were also good but very different from others that I've tried before. My only complaint is that I wish there was a larger variety of toppings in my bowl, but that's just a personal preference. Tried Somenya for the first time and the ambiance is so cozy and feels you've been transported to a Japanese cafe! Staff had recommended the spicy salmon tartare and fried octopus apps and those did not disappoint! The fried octopus was so light and crispy. For entrees, we tried the kimchi beef soba and the roast duck udon. I've never tried soba noodles in hot broth before but the noodles are made fresh and very tasty, especially as the weather gets colder. Udon noodles were perfect with the roast duck soup. I love this place because the cold udon is so good and sometimes better than Yume! Plus you can ditch the wait in line here. Their cold spicy beef udon is a hidden gem at this location. The noodles are always cooked perfectly chewy every time I've visited and the beef made tender. The broth also hits the spot, especially on a hot summer day. My friends and I arrived in Somenya and were promptly seated. Service was pretty fast and friendly, which I greatly appreciated. I ordered the chicken curry udon as I am not a huge fan of soba. The udon noodles were alright. They were not as succulent and thick as I would have preferred. The curry broth was pretty good, but not overly impressive. I enjoyed the fried chicken but wish they had served it on the side. They only had about 4 small pieces present in the dish, and most of it was drowned in the sauce. The crispy exterior was eroded by the hot broth. I am surprised they know to serve the shrimp tempura on the side but can not do the same for the fried chicken considering its smaller portion size. While the food was just alright, I did appreciate the ambiance and decoration of this place. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with Japanese motifs present in every corner. Overall, it was alright, but the quality did not match the price you are paying, and there are better udon spots around Boston. I will give this spot 3.5 stars but rounded up to 4 for this review. read more

A new cozy place recently opened in Chinatown. Upon walking in, you feel right at home with the decor and seating. The menu has a good selection of things to pick from and they offer alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. We went with the soba and udon which was okay. The beef sukiyaki udon soup had a lot of flavor and the egg was cooked to perfection. The soba was okay. I don't think it had enough flavor especially when paired with tempura. This recent new addition might have just become my top place to go when craving for nice noodles in Chinatown. My friends and I finally got to try this place out on a Monday evening and we've all agreed that we're in love with this place. As you walk in, you'd immediately notice they put efforts into interior. Given a not-so-huge space in basement, it's kept the coziness but arranged tables in a way that it still feels spacious and neat. Their decors also match their vibe - izakaya flags and lanterns in the ceiling adds to the cozy air and small touches like nice flowers in sake bottles and cutlery aligned in the centre of the table shows their minimalistic vibe. We ordered agedashi tofu, truffle edamame, crispy squid tentacles, kaji fried chicken and seaweed salad for appetizers and each got hot/cold soba/udon for entrees. When the food started coming out, we were first impressed by their ceramics then were awed at the taste of each dish. Each appetizer was unique - even their seaweed salad that could've been just as mundane as it could get, was interesting with their own twist of yuzu flavour. Both kaji fried chicken and squid tentacles were fresh - crisp outside and juicy inside. I really appreciated how their batter wasn't too thick. Truffle edamame came with freshly shaved truffles, which I'm not sure if it added too much to the flavour, but it definitely gave a wow effect. We thoroughly enjoyed each of our entrees. Their house made noodles tasted fresh in both taste and texture. The portion size was perfect with good amount of protein and noodles and the flavour was a perfect blend - none of the spice was overpowering. Excellent new restaurant with house made udon and soba dishes among other apps and donburi bowls. This was a spur of the moment drop in after having seen this on the Eater heat map the other day as we just happened to be walking past. We ordered just a few dishes but given the quality, we'll be back for more. Ambience is nice with a modern cute subterranean location which has been decked out in blonde wood trims, banners on string, and floral arrangements which made me feel like being transported to spring in Japan (rather than a dingy basement on a Chinatown street corner) Service was attentive despite the lunchtime rush on this Sunday (no line and half empty when we arrived, but full restaurant and 4-6 people waiting in line by mid meal). Water glasses were never empty, straws were brought out for the kids glasses without needing to ask, and sharing bowls also brought out for the kids as well. Food - the most important part (keeping in mind this was a fairly limited sampling of the menu). Udon - I'd say one of the best in Boston for taste and texture. I know I'll be craving the cold spicy beef udon at a random time. Great combo of heat, sweet, salty, crunch, and chew. Sukiyaki udon also a winner though a little bit more one dimensional. I think Tsurutontan makes a better broth with their wagyu sukiyaki udon and is a bit more balanced overall. Best competitor to the cold udon would be Ume Ga Arukara though their beef quality is worse. Tried a soba dish as well to get a sense of their quality. While the flavor was earthy with a richness that you don't commonly find, it felt overcooked and some of the noodles were clumped. I'd be interested to try their cold zaru soba (or tenzaru) in the future to get a better sense. I find that hot soba dishes tend to lead to overcooked noodles though so it may just be me. Quality of portions are a little bit on the lean side esp given the pricing and location. Extra order of udon noodles runs $10. Overall, 4.5 stars (really wish yelp would let you give 1/2 rating increments) - docked 1/2 star for value but this place will enter into my regular rotation based on my initial visit. read more

I've had the duck broth at sugidama soba and it was WAYY more flavorful. This duck broth was kind of watered down. I would 100% recommend getting the udon noodles instead of the soba.
