We went to Somerset this weekend and meant to try the lunch menus for the Chicago restaurant week 2022. However we were informed the lunch for restaurant week is only available during weekdays. It would be nice if that information was available on the website to customers before they made reservations. We reflect that to the staff and they kindly accepted the feedback. We ended up staying and ordered from their regular brunch menu. We had the beef Tatar, French toast, Brussels sprouts and French fries. They were good in general. Went to Somerset to check out the Chicago Restaurant week menu....was pretty bummed they didn't offer it during brunch hours. The food still ended up being really really good! The service on the other hand was pretty terrible. Two tables actually got up and left near us as they didn't get served for so long. There actually seemed to be a lot of staff around, they were just really slow! Hoping we just visited on a bad day. Overall, I'd return to give them a second chance. I was trying to decide where to eat with one of my friend who was also in Chicago the same time I was, she suggested Somerset. I quickly glanced at the pictures and reviews on Yelp and said yes. I am so happy I said yes because everything was phenomenal! The service, ambience, food and drinks were better than I expected and I know understand the high ratings. Here is what we ordered: - Pecan Manhattan - It was sweet and strong! These Manhattan were so tasty, I had to order two! 5/5 stars - Beef Tartar - YUM! This was delicious starter. We had to asked for extra bread! 5/5 stars - Pan Fried Cod with Sunchoke: Flaky and buttery cod on top of a creamy sunchoke puree. This dish was simply divine. 5/5 stars - Crispy Potatoes: Salty and not crispy enough. 2/5 stars - Squid ink pasta: Tasty! I love squid ink pasta and always order if its available and Somerset was by far my favorite. Chewy noodles dress in a yummy sauce! Overall, delicious meal! My only regret was ordering the crispy potatoes instead of the cod fritters. Oh, and not getting another pecan Manhattan because those were too good. Kind of disappointed at our dinner at Somerset to be honest. We were excited to try a really cool looking place in a super-trendy area of the city and all. Viceroy Hotel... Etc. First of all, vegetarian food options were quite limited. There was a pasta and the risotto. It think that was literally it. I wasn't up for drinks that night, so that element was off the table as well. I don't do pasta, so I had to go for the risotto, which by the way, left a lot more to be desired. There was some appetizer we had which was decent, though I don't recall what it was now. In the end we also had a cheesecake dessert, which was nice. I would suggest that this place add some variety and flavor to their vegetarian / plant-based offering. read more

Came here with my brother for their $24 restaurant week lunch and had a great meal. Between the two of us we were able to try a lot of their dishes and both were happy with almost everything. The interior is clean and modern, but open enough that it feels spacious and cozy. We started with the hamachi crudo and beet tartare. The crudo was fresh, seasoned with oil, dill, onions, and tasty. The beet tartare, however, I think was my favorite thing there. The beet was cooked and seasoned perfectly, soft but with just enough texture to hold up on the sunflower seed cracker/chips. I don't know what they put in but it was so tasty and fresh, with a huge portion. Our entrees were the hangar steak and grilled branzino, both of which were cooked well, not too dry, and pretty tasty. They could've used a bit more sauce or savoriness but overall pretty good. The desserts were fantastic; they had a peanut butter chocolate cake that was rich and dense. The citrus pavlova was even better, with a crispy outside fluffy inside meringue-based pavlova, over a layer of lemon curd and bits of assorted citrus fruits all around. I was skeptical at first but the fruit was fresh and just tart enough to complement the light, airy pavlova; I don't usually get "refreshing" desserts but this was such a great, nuanced palate cleanser with an interesting combination of flavors, I really hope it gets to the main menu! In the pre-pandemic time, we used to be frequent visitors at Somerset but given the restrictions we were able to go to the restaurant for the first time in 2+ years. The service was great and we were seated promptly despite a super last minute reservations - we also went on a slow Monday night. The menu while evolved has a lot of options. We were limited due to dietary restrictions and the inability to eat anything raw or undercooked. We still got several options to pick from. The lobster spring rolls were nice but the accompanying salad and wasabi aioli were the hero of that dish. As expected, the short rib main did not disappoint and was melting in our mouth with every bite. The truffle potatoes were delicious too. However, the chicken schnitzel was a bit disappointing - the trademark thin breading of a schnitzel was missing and what we ate was closer to regular fried chicken. My only issue with all the dishes were that all of them were under-seasoned. We aren't big on salt but even for us, the flavor was muted because of the seasoning. We got our server to bring us table salt and that fixed it! I'd definitely go back and try the crispy rice dish when we are able to eat undercooked/raw foods again. read more

I am very impressed by the quality of food and service we had the pleasure to experience at Somerset. Covid Safety: outdoor dining both in patio and greenhouses are available. There are heaters throughout and it was not cold the entire time we were dining, despite the weather in 20-30s. Food: amazing ! Everything we ordered was marvelous. We had smoked salmon latke- absolutely our favorite. We ordered it twice! The crispness of potato pancake was paired exquisitely with the tanginess of pickled onions and richness of salmon. Their lobster ravioli and Burrata pasta were drenched in flavorful sauce and garnishes such as mushrooms. The NY strip was perfectly cooked- juicy, thick, and delightful. It was based on some sort of red pepper oil, pesto sauce and roasted mushroom. The portion was perfect and we enjoyed every dish. Service: The waitress was attentive and friendly. She brought an extra heater closer to us and even provided warm blankets for our seats. She wrote "happy anniversary " on our bill and brought us a glass of champagne on the house! It was so special. Overall, I am very much pleased with our experience at Somerset. Went for restaurant week, did the $25 brunch menu. 1st course I had the yogurt parfait, which tastier than I anticipated, but not out of this world. My friend got the avocado toast but only ate what was on top because the bread was straight mush, no crunch unfortunately, like they never even toasted it? 2nd course I ordered the ricotta cavatelli - pasta with duck sugo & some bread crumbs. That was actually pretty delicious. My friend got the goat cheese & spinach omelet, which was decent, but she said the highlight were the breakfast potatoes we ended each with an ice cream & sorbet, which was very good! It was busy but it appeared like they had a lot of workers & help but our food took longer to come out than the 90min table limit & our waitress was pretty slow with just about every request (cream & sugar for coffee, ketchup for potatoes, etc). Somerset is a beautiful restaurant, with patio seating in the better weather, and tons of natural light, making for a pleasant dining experience. We highly commend the service, which was impeccable, from the host to the waiters to the runners. There are parts of the restaurant that are conducive to talking to fellow diners without being pushed to do so. We started with the muhammara appetizer, which was a little heavy on the spice, but still enjoyable. The mains were salmon and branzino, both excellent. I went to Somerset last night and greatly enjoyed my time. The atmosphere was modern but sophisticated- it had beautiful lighting and art displays. It was great for a nice night out. They even had their patio open, which would be great for a sunny but chilly day. I had the squid ink pasta with calamari and prawns. It didn't need any sauce or any add-ons. It was absolutely perfect. I enjoyed every last bit of it. For the size, they had a small and large option. While the waiter suggested the larger size, I got the small and was stuffed! My boyfriend had the ricotta dumplings... which were also fabulous. They were a bit smaller of a size but so incredibly rich that it ended up being the perfect size. The ricotta literally burst in your mouth and the pairing of squash, brown butter, and pumpkin seeds made it a delectable dish. The only reason this is a 4 Star review is our waiter. He was constantly trying to upsell us- convincing us we wouldn't have enough food because portions were too small. We got a side of mushrooms that we barely touched because we thought we would go hungry and ended up being incredibly full with our dishes. It was a very frustrating experience. The food here is great. I love Chef Stephen. Unfortunately, the service is horrendous. We were at a table in the sun and it was too hot to touch our silverware. We asked to be moved to the shade. They said they would move us, but then seated other patrons at all of the tables in the shade and then told us they thought we wanted to stay in the sun. Apparently they "assumed we wanted to stay" because they brought our food out right after we asked and ran away before we could say anything. I guess we should have stood up and hovered obnoxiously over the table in the shade to mark it as our own. If you're going to promise something, follow through with it. Eventually they moved us inside, and service went way downhill. No one followed up asking if we wanted drinks or dessert. They decided to disregard us the rest of our visit because of their mistake. We will probably eventually be back since the food is good. Hopefully the service will have improved by then. read more

We came on a Friday early dinner. We didn't have a reservation, but we were seated right away at a table. We kept waiting for someone to bring water and take our order. No one came for 15 min so we decided to walk over to the bar to place an order and ask for water. The bartender said "I see you. Just give us a second". Another 15 min passes by and no one comes. We went up to the bar again then was told the same thing, but with angry tone and rolled eyes :( . At this point, it had been 40min sice we walked in, two attempts to order at the bar or even get water. Our neighboring tables all had their servers, but with many servers passing by us, we felt ignored and invisible. We just kept getting "we will be right with you". We just walked out and no one said anything. I really hope it wasn't because of my race, but who knows... Extremely sad experience because the other restaurant, S.K.Y. is my favorite restaurant in Chicago. I did not expect to be treated this horribly. No one deserves to be treated this way, and now I am too scared to go back there. read more

I even got a more atypical entrée to break out of the typical breakfast food but it was a little underseasoned. The thing that killed it was the very undercooked bacon. Like not just floppy but pale-- not even browned. My guy, whose go-to is a side of bacon, took one look and wouldn't even try it. It wasn't inedible, don't get me wrong, so it wasn't like it was unsafe. But if I order bacon I at the very least expect crispy edges and some rendered fat. I would have brought it up to the server but she was nowhere to be found. My coffee was to my liking, and I appreciated the variety of lactose-free options (though for that neighborhood I'd have expected nothing less!). Finally I can give 4 stars! I loved Somerset!! I came in for Saturday Brunch with a group of girls for a bday and everything was on point. Our waiter was so nice and friendly. We ordered a few avocado toasts for the table and a round of drinks to start off. I ordered the Bellini which was amazing and I loved that it was paired with passion fruit instead of the typical peach or grapefruit. While we were waiting for our entrees a women (maybe a manager) stopped by our table and dropped off a platter of fried chicken, biscuits and coleslaw. She mentioned they were doing a photo shoot for a Sunday special and OMG the fried chicken was on point ( it's a new special on Sunday nights- I will for sure be back to eat some fried chicken) For my brunch entrée my friend and I split the burger and baked eggs. Personally my burger was over cooked but it was good and I wished the baked eggs came with a runny center (they were too well done for my taste as well). We didn't order dessert but they brought out a beautiful piece of cake for the birthday girl and wrote happy birthday with her name. Solid solid brunch here! Get the chicken and French Toast ;) It's surrounded by a box in the menu for a reason!! Somerset is relatively new since its renovation. The interiors pay homage to the country club - with the bottom floor having an aviation theme and the upper floors following elephant polo (you'll see if you stop by the restrooms). But to the food! The chicken and French Toast, dare I say, is the best fried chicken I've had (compared to places like Publican and Roister). The Sriracha sauce is just enough to be there with a hint of sweetness (though maybe not enough for spice lovers), with the flavors and crispness of the chicken balancing with the softness of the thick French Toast. Portion is just right for a solid brunch, and overall a superb way to start any day. We also tried the S'mores Pop Tart - wonderful ingredients (especially the chocolate and the marshmallow), but we all agreed we wish it were served warm and melted. Maybe the pâtissier knew something we didn't - but S'mores to us is melted (and my mother used to toast my Pop Tarts so that was warm too). Maybe it can be done by special request, but as-is, this felt raw and unfinished. Not enough to detract from the brunch, but man that could have been wow :) Can't wait to come back! I've wanted to try out this bar for weeks now. After moving to this area recently I've walked by here about 30 times now. It always looks so cute from the outside. Well my husband and I stopped in last night to get a drink before dinner. The place is gorgeous inside! The bartenders wear an impressive outfit to match the decor. Unfortunately the bartender couldn't have been anymore underwhelming. I asked for my usual, a spicy margarita which is not on the menu. The bartender was happy to make me one anyways. This was the absolute worst margarita I've ever had. Too spicy, not sweet at alllll. I tried to drink it but was getting heart burn from two sips. I asked her to add some oj to it and she offered to remake it. The second one was a little less spicy but still gross. $38 for two terrible drinks.... sadly we won't be back. This was the first place we tried for restaurant week 2020. Really liked the decor, and the fact that it was conversation friendly. Started out with delicious apricot toddy, which I'd happily drink a pitcher if I didn't have to work next day. Thought it was a bit of a misstep when the lady who brought our drinks got bumped into and spilled a lot of the toddy, then set it down on the table like nothing happened. My friend complained to our server, who promptly brought us a fresh one, which was very nice of him. The complimentary rolls were delicious, but the herb sauce drizzled on it was too salty. The salad was refreshing and corn fritters crisp and delicious. But the mushroom Bagna cauda that came with the steak was so salty I couldn't finish it, which saddened me as I love mushrooms. The steak itself was decent. Friend's branzino was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Desserts were much better, each of the 3 desserts tasted great and had their own character. We were given a bread basket with 4 items (there were 5 of us) and told to visit the "stations" for our food. There were 2 stations (one for beef & one for chicken), plus a plate of cold quiche and some pastries. They had eggs, pancakes, etc. on the menu, but you couldn't order those.
