Making an appointment was easy--you could either book online through her website or by phone. I'm glad I met Dr. Somi Kim since she made everything easy. I hate the eye blowing thing, but I got through it. She's great at explaining things, like how my dry eyes work and what kinds of interventions I should take. They have a nice assortment of glasses. Wow! The five star rating is REAL. I was looking for a new optometrist in the area and decided to give this place a try after reading all the amazing reviews. They're located in this small plaza with parking underneath that is free. You take the stairs up and you pop out right next to the shop. The assistants are super sweet and are very helpful with sorting out insurance and payments. The man I dealt with was so friendly and made me laugh with the jokes he made about my mother's eye benefits! Dr. Kim is so genuine you'll be blown back. She explains things in a thorough way that you'll appreciate and she walks you through what she's doing. I got my retinas checked by their new machine and before we began she explained to me the technology behind this incredible advancement and what it allows them as optometrists to do for their patients. It was fascinating! She's efficient at her work while also being personable and I appreciated that touch. It made the experience all the more better. After getting my eyes checked out I was helped with finding glasses which was also another enjoyable process. Pick up was within two weeks, plain and simple! I first visited Somi Kim optometry on March 24th. The visit itself was okay. The doctor was incredibly kind; patient and explained things thoroughly. However, the man at the front was extremely unprofessional. He thought it was funny that I had such bad vision but never wore glasses. I brushed his comments off and was told that because I used medi-cal that I should expect to receive my glasses in 4-6 weeks. After 4 weeks I gave Somi Kim a call and was told by the same man that my glasses "are still being made". I called again at 6 weeks and still no updates on my glasses, just a passive aggressive response that I should expect to wait since I used medi-cal. Around 8 weeks I called and the same man on the phone was incredibly rude when I asked about the status of my glasses and told me I need to wait. I wound up requesting my prescription since they never gave it to me from the start (weird). I finally received a call yesterday saying my glasses were ready so I just picked up my glasses a few minutes ago and the man at the counter was incredibly rude. Didn't greet me, didn't look up. I had to let him know I was there to pick up my glasses. When I told him I used medi-cal he scoffed and then asked for my name. He found my glasses and placed it on the table (no case or lense cloth). Then I guess he remembered that he's supposed to give me a case and lense cloth and he just put it on the table in the most rude manner. His body language definitely told me that I was not welcome. Didn't ask me to try them on to see if it fit, didn't ask if I needed anything. Unbelievably rude. I would not recommend Somi Kim to anyone using medi-cal unless you want to wait 10 weeks for glasses, you want to be treated so poorly and looked down upon. read more

She's the nicest optometrist I've been to thus far. She is so personable and informs you of what she is doing. She is so careful and thorough that she was able to detect that I could possibly have a tumor. When I went to the doctors and got an MRI, Dr. Kim was right... I have a tumor. I am so glad I found Dr. Somi Kim on yelp a couple of years back! I personally like to support Korean businesses since I am Korean myself. Dr. Kim is soooooooooooo knowledgeable, nice, and very easy to talk too! her staff is also excellent as well! She has given me faith that my horrible eyesight has a chance! Its never boring when I come see her we always have something to talk about. Her office has all the up to date machines including this cool one that looks a spaceship pod but its really to check your cornea. Even if my insurance is not part of the plan I still come to her because the price is still great and I always buy a years worth of contacts and they offer me a rebate as well. Throughout my entire blind as hell life, I've always felt all optometrist offices were all the same. Walk in, sit in a chair, get air blasted into your eyeballs, read some letters, walk out having learned you're more blind now and your insurance only covers the glasses on the No One Would Wear These That's Why They're Free wall. Rinse repeat. This is the first place I've ever felt compelled to review because they made my experience so pleasant. First of all, I just really like the staff. Excellent people skills and top notch customer service across the board. Dr. Kim was personable and explained so many interesting things as she tested my eyes, things that I've never ever known after more than 2 decades of getting eye exams with various doctors. Lee helped me with EVERYTHING: providing recommendations on lenses for my frames, fixing up my old crappy glasses that I had to work with until the new ones came in, gave me a couple of samples for contacts, and he did it all with a smile and not like someone just waiting for their shift to end. He was very kind, funny and patient. The store carries an amazing selection of frames from all the brands ever. I ended up finding this place because there was a very specific frame I had to have (immediately!!!) and they were one of the only shops in the area that had them in stock. Lee helped me figure out a way to use my insurance and FSA money before it expired and saved me a ton of money on the frames. My prescription is so strong that usually when I get the lenses put in, they're like 5 inches thick and I look psychotic wearing them, so I was very specific and had a ton of questions to make sure they would look nice. The staff handled my neuroticism very well and hooked me up with all the bells and whistles for my lenses. When I picked up my glasses about a week later, they looked amazing AND I ended up getting some money back which I used for contacts. Go here to get your next exam, frames or lenses! First time ever going to this optometrist as my regular one was out of town. I might just have to switch over. I walked in and was greeted in a relatively friendly manner. I waited for about 10 minutes before being seen but I must say I was early to the appointment anyway. Dr.Somi- Friendly and so helpful. This was the first time I was ever getting contacts and she spoke to me in a way I was fully able to understand what was wrong with my sight as well as explain to me the better lenses that would be suiting to me. She took her time and had a lot of patience when we placed the first pair of lenses in. She was also really helpful in regards to my astigmatism and whether I would need a different lens for my eye affected. Overall, she is a great doctor and I will be back. The man in front, well he was nice. He didn't really have much patience with me after I was unsuccessful at removing the lenses a few times. While, he didn't show the annoyance- his tone of voice completely changed. It changed yet again when it came to choosing how many and what my payment method was. -Returning a week later for the contacts I ordered- I was disregarded until someone I hadn't seen before finally asked me my name and what I was there for. Come here for contacts. Dr. Somi Kim is so very nice and awesome. She is a doctor who makes sure her patients are educated, not just examined. I felt at ease. She explained what kind of diagnostic test she was performing and which part of the eye she was examining. Getting an eye exam from Dr. Kim was like a fun mini-opthamology lecture. I was extremely scared of contacts. Dr. Kim was the second optomotrist who recommended contacts for me. Thanks to Dr. Kim's finesse at communication, I gave in. I currently use AcuVue One-Day. After the visit, it was amazing to read billboards without glasses weighing down on my nose. Furthermore, my job which required 9+ hours of looking at computer monitors became easier. With glasses, my eyes felt itchy and irritated so I had to go to the bathroom every 20 minutes to cool them down; with contacts, my eyes felt much better. So if you work with computers all day and are tired of the headaches and eye irritation, you might consider contacts. Dr. Kim also mentioned something about Orthokeratology aka Ortho-k, which she compared to putting braces on your teeth. I might consider that in the future. The front desk is manned by a Korean man. He's also very nice. He sat me down and taught me how to remove the contacts. Dr. Kim accepts VSP insurance. Plus her office has the nicest, fanciest eye glasses. Think Vera Wang for your eyes. My sister referred me to Dr. Somi Kim about 3 years ago when I moved close to Ktown, and I have been going to her ever since for yearly exams and updating my contact lens prescriptions. Sometimes Yelp really does come through. I was looking for a new optometrist for my mom who is mostly nonverbal due to health issues. After reading the many 5-star reviews of Dr. Somi Kim, I decided to take a chance. She was very patient and gave my mom a comprehensive eye exam despite the communication barriers. The fact that Dr. Kim is bilingual is a major plus because she was able to answer some of my specific questions. I can't comment yet on the quality of their glasses because we're picking up my mom's new eyewear later this week. Was a bit anxious to get my eyes checked due to being very unfamiliar with optometrists as I had always had pretty good vision. Dr. Kim and her staff made me feel very comfortable from the moment I walked in until the moment I walked out. Came here because the office accepts my vision insurance and there were great reviews on yelp. I'd have to say my experience was just as good as the reviews left on Yelp. Somi Kim optometry is located in a shopping plaza, you can find underground parking which is free with no valet, just don't double park. I was a little lost but look for the stairs to the first floor and you will arrive right in front of the optometrists office. I was greeted by one of the front desk employees who was very friendly and nice. We talked about my insurance and I looked at some frames while I waited. I came in for a contact lens exam so I didn't end up buying frames. Dr. Kim was great! She explained everything to me so I could understand and answered any of my questions. Sooo I had an appointment today with them at 1pm and when I got there, the front service elderly guy who made an appointment for me the day earlier said I wouldn't be able to see the doctor since he thought I wasn't coming because I was late 3 minutes (not 30, just 3 minutes). He literally blamed me for the fact that he accepted walk in customer instead of waiting for me for 3 min. I would have appreciated if he at least apologized and helped me set up another appointment. However, my overall experience at her office was hugely negative because of how rude and mean the gentleman at the front desk was. It really bums me out when an establishment cares more about sticking their customers with charges as opposed to giving reasonable deals and care with their service. My prescription has not changed in 8 years, yet I have to come back once a year and pay for an exam for them to tell me it is the same. Fine, it's procedure...I get it. I went online to order a new set of contact. My prescription expired 2 weeks ago, Normally other eye exam business will allow me to refill my contacts for a short past the expiration date because they realize how unfair it is to make a customer come in and pay for an exam that is not necessary. I should not have to come in every year, when my prescription has been the same since I was 20....I'm 28!!!!! What difference is 2 weeks going make? Really, though? Other than I piece of paper telling me a date, what is the difference in ordering 2 weeks ago vs. today... Dr. Kim is very knowledgeable, detail-oriented, and honest. I used to go to LensCrafters because I didn't know better, but individual practitioners like her are amazing. She explains what she is doing, which helps me understand and prevents questions. All of the staff are also very attentive, and the selection is well-curated. The glasses can be pricey compared to online stores, but they're better quality, and it's worth being able to try on different styles that are specially selected for an asian face (smaller nose, eyes that aren't as deep set). You're also paying for personal service, because prescriptions need adjustment. LensCrafters rushed me, gave me an incorrect prescription that weakened my eyesight, and I was not able to return or adjust the glasses I bought online... read more

i'm changing my rating after months of wearing the contacts i got from here within a few weeks of wearing the contacts my coworkers kept commenting on how red my eyes were i also had a small bump on the inner corner of my left eye (which was NOT caused by the contacts but sun damage as my original opto explained once i went back to her) that after wearing the contacts i got here became very, very red and irritated i called somi kim's office to see if she could see me regarding this issue but the receptionist(?)'s attitude was so lackluster when i called that it made me not want to go back instead of being concerned about my eyes and wanting to resolve the issue he kept mentioning that she would charge me if the cause of my issue somehow happened to be unrelated to the contacts that's fine if that's their policy but it just made me feel like they cared more about that than my eyes it also made me feel like they would find some reason or another so that they could charge the extra fee i just ended up going back to my original opto (awesome Dr. Cathy @ the LensCrafters @ Figat7th) who saw me for no charge and gave me a pair of lenses that fit correctly the redness and irritation in my eyes were gone in a few days read more
