By far the best optometrist I've ever been to, bar none, and perhaps the best specialist of any kind too. Dr. Kim is warm, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. I felt like I received the most thorough eye exam I've ever had, which was made even better as Dr. Kim explained each step in simple and comprehensible language. After being less than impressed by my last few visits to various Optometry offices in LA that have been recommended by friends and co-workers, I decided to ask all you YELPERS out there for your opinions. I have to admit, I was a little skeptical about going to get my eyes checked in K-Town. I'm technically half Korean, biologically speaking, but my mom was adopted and raised in SoCal by surfers, so I'm about as culturally Korean as someone from Sweden. When I go to K--town, people will often try to speak Korean to me, and I feel badly that I am not able to relate to them in this way. But after reading all the great reviews about how thorough Dr. Kim's exams were, I decided I had to go in and check things out for myself. I gotta say, all the reviews were dead on. I was in with Dr. Kim for about an hour, and she was incredibly thorough. (Btw, Dr. Kim and everyone on her staff speak English and Korean fluently). Apparently my eyes are a little tricky. I don't need glasses for vision correction, but I do need them to help with eye strain since all my eye focusing muscle are very weak. I'd heard this before, but always felt that the glasses I'd been given were too strong, making me feel like I was under water and woozy after only wearing them for a few hours. Dr. Kim went beyond what I'd heard before. She explained that my eyes basically adapted to whatever lenses she put in front of me. The first time around I'd say 1 was better, the next time around, that 3 was better. So she had to use her Optometrist know how to figure out what that meant. She said it would be better to start with a lower prescription (that my other glasses I'd brought with me that I had been given before were too strong) and get my eyes used to those, and then maybe eventually work up to a higher prescription. She also told me that even though the other doctor had notated that I had astigmatism in my left eye, my old glasses didn't reflect that in the prescription. Hm. Interesting. Her staff was also very kind and helpful. John, the guy who works in front helped me look at frames. I've always dreaded picking out frames because most of them aren't wide enough for my head and don't fit the bridge of my nose. In all of the other pairs of glasses I'd had before, my eye lashes bumped up against the lenses which is super annoying. I expressed my frustration to John and he said, "Here, try these. They are Asian fit glasses." I thought he was joking. Apparently he wasn't. They make the same square plastic/enamel designer frames that I've always loved, but with longer plastic nose pieces so that they fit on my face without sliding down the bridge of my nose or bumping up against my eye lashes. This is what I've been missing, never having been to an Optometry shop in K-town before! Why did none of my Asian friends ever tell me this?!!! It was amazing! A majority of the frames in the shop fit my face---more than I've ever had the opportunity to chose from before. And the prices are super reasonable! I ended up choosing a cool matte plastic frame that was only $120, so my VSP insurance covered all of it! I only had to pay for the anti-reflective coating on the lenses and the co-pay which was like $20. Can't wait to pick up my new glasses this week! Love this place! I went in for an eye exam for glasses & contacts, Dr. Kim was so kind and thorough. She gave me the best eye exam I've ever had! She took her time answering all my questions and making sure she got my prescription right. The guys out front are equally wonderful. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the older gentleman who helped me but he was so sweet and incredibly helpful. After describing the kind of frame I was looking for he handed me a pair that were...PERFECT! I usually agonize over decisions and find myself endlessly debating between two or three options so I couldn't believe I'd found the perfect pair so quickly. I tried on several more that I liked just to be sure, they were all great but not quite as awesome as the first pair. First time. They took me in as a walk-in and was very courteous and accommodating. Very cool about explaining my insurance benefits and details. Dr. Kim could not have been more kind-hearted and comforting in the way she proceeded with the examination. Just a phenomenal doctor and person. After both the eyeglasses and contact exams, I went back to the main showcase room to find a new frame and John was equally patient and helpful. He took the time to answer all my questions, explain the differences in frames, lenses, etc. The only hiccup I had was that John told me that I had some sort of time limit on buying the frame I wanted at a discounted price. Like if I took a day to decide (these weren't cheap frames) then I would lose the discounted price. Kinda weird and shady but wtf, I chalked it up to him wanting to make the sale. I just came back from Dr. Kim's and was so satisfied with my experience at her office, I had to go ahead and Yelp about it! After months of denial, I finally made the decision to see an optometrist concerning my deteriorating vision. I found Dr. Kim on Yelp, and based on all the reviews, decided to make an appointment for my first ever eye exam. Needless to say, she and her staff completely surpassed any expectations (if any) that I had. They are all very friendly and helpful, as well as professional. Dr. Kim especially is very insightful and explains things clearly and with great detail so you know exactly what's going on with your eyes, as well as get a better understanding of the situation. After speaking with her, one can definitely gauge she is more than well-versed in her field and for lack of better words -- knows what's up! I mean..I definitely learned a lot within that 20 minutes. Dr. Somi Kim was nice. The front gentlemen kept telling me to use my insurance for contacts. But I wanted glasses with best lenses and coating he was like that's going to be hundreds and I was like, "Okay I'll spend the money", I know it will be pricey. I was being over charged until I showed my Insurance's site and what I should be looking at to pay for lenses and frames with coating. They made a mistake in my first glasses lenses that I waited two weeks for, the prescription was off I could not see. They replaced it less then a week and the new lenses did not have the same tech shield blue coating that I paid for, it had a green reflection instead of a blue. They showed me that it blocked some blue light with a laser and told me that it was blue tech but I had a video of both lenses reflections and it was very different. The first lenses had correct coating but incorrect prescription. The second lenses had correct prescription but incorrect coating. After I show the video, he just said all lenses are different. I just took the L, they can keep the chum change. I'm just upset I didn't get what I paid for, I'll just take my money somewhere else next time. read more

Since I was in need of a new eye doctor, I booked an appt with Dr Kim based on Yelp reviews. Dr Kim is sharp, very thorough, and friendly. I definitely recommend her and her office! I called on a Tuesday late afternoon (last week), and scheduled an appt for both glasses and contact lens for the next day at 11:30am. Parked right in front of the bldg and was seen within 15 minutes of my arrival, right on schedule. While I was waiting I picked out and tried on some glasses I wanted. I narrowed it down to 5 from a selection of hundreds to choose from. I eventually chose a Persol, but had a pair of Alain Mikli, Ray Bans which were also in the running to becoming America's Next Top Frames lol. Seriously, it was the Yelp reviews and the large selection that brought me here. Dr Kim took the time to go over everything with me even though I walked in with my current lenses and glasses. My glasses will be ready tomorrow for pickup, not a bad turnaround since I already had a pair of Prada with broken nose guards (which they also fixed for free). But I also walked out with a new contact lens prescription which is what I really needed. Even though I live in Santa Monica, I just couldn't find an optometrist with good prices and a great selection. Go see her. She is fluent in English as well as the the front office. My favorite part is that I called eight other eye places in the area and her eye exam was cheapest! Only $40 for an glasses exam. I expected subpar service because of the cheap price, but the reality was, it was EXCELLENT! Helpful, informative, fast, and efficient. I thought I would never rate a doctor 5 stars (who likes doc's appointments, right?), but Dr Kim is so thorough, and she made my daily life so much better. After reading all the great Yelp reviews, I made an appointment for an eye exam on the same day. I had to wait a little bit, but the man with the glasses kept us company. He is so friendly and funny. Wish I got his name. He even fixed my bf's sunglasses for free and spent a lot of time on it. Went in for my exam. Dr. Kim speaks English and is very thorough. I had a better experience here than at one of the Costco locations 2yrs ago. They also gave me a really good deal since I bought glasses there. I highly recommend it. They have a variety of different frames and the man that helped me found a good number of frames to fit my face and TRUST ME when I say every pair of glasses I have tried on before this place did not look good on me. I get so many compliments on my glasses alone and I love that it's not heavy on my nose. I had some questions so I called and the man with the glasses remembered who I was and happily answered all of them. I was first a bit sceptical how someone can get some many good reviews. After visiting Dr Kim I know. She is extrememly diligent and takes the time necessary to address your needs. I have a very difficult prescription that usually takes a lot of time to get it right. In the past I experienced it many times that a Dr. with a perfect vision doesn't understand my challanges. Dr. Kim must have spent have of her live reading books about her field. I ever had a Dr. that shared so much of her knowledge so I could understand what my options are. After finding out this gem of a place from Yelp, I gotta admit that I must add to the choir of praises Somi Kim's Optometry rightfully deserves. Having had bad vision since my early elementary school days, I've had my fair share of different optometrists but this is the only one that I've loved enough to stop and actually review. First of all, Dr. Kim is such a genuine and caring optometrist. Besides knowing very simply that my eye is a wreck (extremely high prescription considering my relatively young 24 year old self, and an infection to top it off when I walked in), I didn't even realize how little I knew about my eye health until I visited this office. Besides the common prescription strength, Dr. Kim went above and beyond in explaining each diagnosis she does - ie why my eyeball is long, why I'm more prone to some eye issues, why I need to get some specific check-ups every year due to these underlying issues, etc) She's very patient in thoroughly answering all my curious questions, and I never felt that she rushed the appointment. From the moment I walked in to her office til I finished, she talked to me like a friend and the warm atmosphere she provides for her patients is a rarity to see nowadays in so many money-hungry offices. Make no mistake, the reviews are all true, she really deserves all the praise everyone speaks of her. But most of all, the reason why I would like to post this review is the wonderful wonderful front of staff people. To be honest, I don't even recall the front desk man's name but may I tell you that he is literally the NICEST person I've met in my life? Knowing my high prescription and my young ignorant self, he could have over charged me or tried to sell some overpriced frames. But no. He kindly accepted the frames I brought no questions asked, AND tried his hardest to penny pinch here and there to make my stupidly expensive high prescription glasses the best it could be. To top it all off, he felt so bad about me paying so much for everything that when I came to pick up my glasses and contacts the next week, he gave me a month's worth of free contacts!! My goodness, at this point I had to wonder if I was being pranked. His kindness was really just endless! Guys, trust all the reviews that bless this little haven. Considering we all have only one set of eyes our entire lives, we gotta go to places that actually care about our eye health. I was very impressed with the care I received from Dr. Somi Kim's office. She is very accommodating and knowledgeable with very good bed side manners to match. This was one of the most thorough eye exams I've had with Dr. Kim explaining every detail along the way. There is a level of professionalism that I truly appreciated as a fellow health care provider while the rest of the staff was also very helpful with their insight. The selection of frames was impressive and I was able to work a nice discount on top of the already generous pricing. It is very hard for me to find frames that I feel comfortable with due to my high check bones and nose bridge. Usually when I am looking for the right frames I find it difficult to have a decent selection that fits my needs. Other optometry offices I've been to automatically include the most expensive frames and push for me to purchase them. It is not uncommon for me to have to settle for frames that I end up paying top dollar for that do not fit my features. Here I was pleasantly surprised to have a choice of at least 6 or 7 frames that not only met my needs but the style that I was looking for. It was also nice to hear input from the employees that was honest. I chose some very nice designer frames that were not the most expensive but not the cheapest either. After working the numbers I was also left smiling paying a fraction of the price I was expecting to pay. My new glasses will be ready in 3 days and I'm really looking forward to the fitting. Dr. Kim was also easy to work with since I was not exactly happy with my past prescription. She lowered the strength slightly (I have very sensitive eyes/vision) which made all the world of difference to me. If I could give a million stars I would. Dr.Kim is the best optometrist in the universe. She gives the most detailed eye exam and explains each step. She is very personable and wants to make sure your experience is great. We talked about my old contact brand and she explained differences in other brands. We picked out one that is more comfortable for my eyes. The receptionist is amazing. He spent forty five minutes trying to contact my complicated insurance. When it came time to pay for things, he gave different insurance options to make sure I got the cheapest price. The only downside is that all their frames are designer. I have insurance almost everything was covered. If you don't have it, I suggest getting your exam done here and finding cheaper glasses elsewhere. read more

The owner, Dr. Kim, contacted me after I posted my previous review. She apologized for my bad experience and explained that the technician that helped me had no bad intentions whatsoever. It was probably the language barrier between us that created the misunderstanding. She also offered to match the price of a competitor that I found and replace my defective frame for free. My new frame came in today and I'm satisfied with it. As a side note, while I was waiting for my nose-pads to be installed, I took a look around the store. It's very nice and clean looking. The wooden cabinets holding the frames are very classy. They also offer free coffee from what I can tell. Lol. Anyhow, 4.5 stars for turning my bad experience around. I had a great experience during my first visit at Somi Kim Optometry. David, the gentleman running the front desk was exceptionally welcoming and kind. He made sure to do his best in learning about my insurance and finding me any discounts to apply. The doctor was a fill-in for Dr. Kim and she was great! She was very knowledgable and was able to walk me through the eye exam very professionally. If you've never been to Korea Town, don't be too judgy about the exterior of the building. This was my first time visiting Dr. Kim's office and I felt welcomed as soon as I stepped inside. I've been wearing glasses for over ten years now but always wanted to try contacts. The doctor was super nice and assured me that there was no need to be nervous. She gave me the usual eye exam then fitted me for contact lenses. The process of shopping for new glasses can be annoying because I often find the frames that I like best tend to be the more expensive ones. Here, I find that they have a lot of varied choices for all price ranges. Furthermore, both the doctor and the front staff were very helpful in determining the costs/additions available through my insurance. Thank you so much for the suggestion about blue light filter for my lenses that we found out was free through my EyeMed. It has eliminated my eyestrain from working in front of a computer. Also, there is limited parking in the back in spaces that are a bit too small. Parking is parking though, at least this plaza has it! Yelp got it right on this one. My entire experience start to finish was phenomenal. New patient - I made an appointment request online and they called me back that afternoon to schedule an appointment. She seemed to have plenty of availability and flexible hours including after work and Saturdays. I got an appointment within a couple days. When I arrived at my appointment a man greeted me and invited me to sit while he got my information. He was friendly and professional. He told me that there would be a 10-15 minute wait (it was the end of the day, so they were running a little behind) and I looked around at glasses in the meantime. They had a wide variety of frames so it was easy to find something that I liked and could afford-- $120 frames before insurance discount. Cheapest I saw were around $80, though they also have the designer frames if you are feeling spendy! As I tried on glasses, all three of the staff that were there were super helpful without being pushy or hovering. They were knowledgable, too. Give me more positive adjectives to apply to them, please, because they were great. Dr. Kim was amazing. She was friendly, smart, took time to explain things to me and erred on the side of giving me more information, which I appreciated. The exam was thorough, she showed me a variety of prescription strengths, and I really trust that I have the best prescription possible after meeting with her. I left with a giant smile on my face because it was such a pleasant experience-- who gets excited about the eye doctor? With Dr. Kim, I'd be happy to go to the eye doctor once a month. Had the most pleasant experience here this last weekend. Their office seems to be fully booked and busy so don't expect to schedule a next day appointment. You may have to wait a week or two, but it's honestly worth it. They were very accommodating and were able to fit my boyfriend and I into one appointment. I came earlier this morning as one of the first few customers, not knowing how busy it would be. Thankfully, I didn't need to make an appointment and was able to get checked right away. Wow, what can I say? I thought Dr. Kim was great! I traveled this past weekend and am usually prepared for such trips with extra contact lenses, plenty of solution, and a pair of glasses. I always carry extra lenses just in case something happens. However, this was not the case as I had run out of extra lenses and decided to just wing the trip with what I had. WRONG! Of course, my left eye started to get uncomfortable when I was out of town and what do I notice? Micro tears on the rim of the lens. Great. Now I'm stuck with wearing glasses everywhere and that did not go well with my look (vain, I know). I tried to make last-minute appointments with some local optometrists but they were all closed or unavailable :(! So I was stuck with wearing glasses for most of the trip (which is okay but I prefer wearing lenses). I landed in LAX and madean appointment right away by searching for optometrists in the Los Angeles area. I couldn't wait. Dr. Somi Kim's name popped up on Yelp as they were open at 930 in the morning. When I got to the appointment, there was a gentleman who helped me out. My appointment with Dr. Kim was amazing, to say the least. She was so attentive, thorough, and precise with questions I asked. I never had such a thorough examination before. Her demeanor was very professional, meticulous, and really explained everything I needed to know. My one thing that I have to complain about is perhaps pricing. The contact lens boxes were not cheap. I also did not know that a comprehensive eye exam cost $80 on top of the contact lens exam's $80. They did not specify this when I had asked them for their pricing over the phone when I had made the appointment. Things like this should be gone over in detail but it's also important to know which questions to ask. All in all, with Dr. Kim's amazing detailed assessment, I would come back again for future appointments. I hope that future exams will be as good as the first one! read more
