He got the plain milk soft serve with fruity pebbles and Oreos and then I got the matcha and milk swirl with Oreos, graham cracker crust, and the fish pancake stuffed with custard on top! The soft serve was yummy and rich. The fish pancake was crunchy but a bit overwhelming for me. It wasn't busy at all, and was decently clean (I feel like all ice cream joints have sprinkles everywhere at some point). Somisomi has a cute vibe and I love the yellow everywhere. Sharon behind the counter was a one woman wrecking crew. She took orders as well as served all customers on a busy Saturday night. She recommended the cookie butter soft serve when I asked her favorite flavor, but, unfortunately they do not offer samples. It's hard to turn down soft serve ube, knowingly delicious, so I went with that. I topped my ube soft serve with cookie crumble. Loved it. I have been waiting for a Taiyaki (Japanese fish-shaped cake) place to arrive in SE Phoenix area. We enjoyed watching them make the fish-shaped ice cream cones and cakes. I've heard about Ube ice cream (ingredient is from the filipino purple sweet potato) and it was my first try and it was delicious. My friend had their milk ice cream and was very happy. The cones were fresh and crunchy. I will definitely bring my friends and guests to try out this great ice cream shop. SomiSomi has been opened a week now and I have been there three times already. Only because I've had to take my kids on different days due to their schedules. Anywho, the ahboong is good. Not many soft serve flavors. And, taiyaki...there is a clear difference between Thursdays and todays (Friday's) taiyaki order... see pics. Thursdays was so appetizing, golden and fluffy for plain. Friday's was not....it was deflated, flat and not even attached as one piece for 3 of them. I guess someone needs training to make em? It won't stop me from going every once in a while but not sure the taiyaki will be consistent. read more

Cuter than it is tasty. They don't do samples. Kinda weird for a place with unique flavors. Ive had most of these flavors at other locations. Instead of trying something new, I went with some of my favorite flavors. Sadly the flavors mostly tasted like sugar. The black sesame doesn't taste much like anything. The red bean just tasted like sugar. The pastry was flaky, fresh, and a nice compliment to break up the thick soft serve. It was fine. For soft serve I'd rather have topo in Gilbert. For black sesame I'd rather have Sweet Republic (the current best ice cream in AZ). The music was crazy loud. It was hard to hear anyone talk. No outside seating. They have a water jug but the cup size is comically small. I think between the indoor benches, the loud music, and the tiny water cups it points to not being a good place to sit and visit. They want you to get your ice cream and get out. I get that's good for business but not necessarily a nice eating experience. read more

TL:DR - New spot serving fried fish desserts with various fillings. The custard taiyaki (no soft serve) was spot on with good custard that was evenly distributed throughout. Taro didn't taste like taro at all, closer to pandan (vanilla/almondy flavor). Interior was super bare. Staff is young and inexperienced. Scratches the itch for taiyaki well, but not so amazing I'd go out of my way to get this stuff. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Happened upon this place by complete accident. Tucked away at the far end of the 99 Ranch plaza. There's really two types of items you can get here, a fully sealed fried fish cake (taiyaki) or the fish cake with soft serve (Ah-Boong). I got the taiyaki as I needed to take it back to my partner. The taiyaki to me tastes like a mochi batter in that it has a nice chew you don't normally expect like a mochi donut. We got a custard taiyaki and a taro taiyaki. The custard was right on, hint of vanilla, smooth, but not overly sweet, spread evenly through most of the fish. The taro was delicious, but didn't taste anything like taro. The texture was very similar to the custard and tasted exactly like pandan which is a bit almondy with hints of vanilla. But I don't like taro, so this was a win for me tbh. If you do get the soft serve, just know you will have lots of left over ice cream. The proportions are better if you get it without the cup and just use the fish as a traditional ice cream cone. Outside of that, the lack of a star comes from an oddly bare interior and the really young staff. The store is pretty much completely bare except for the cooking area, a small bar and bench along the wall. Lots of open space that should be utilized for more seating. The staff was also quite young and it showed in our interactions. They didn't do anything blatantly wrong, but there were several instances where a more experienced individual would have handled much differently. Just basics in how to interact with customers when they come in, how to handle customer complaints, to food quality issues. Hopefully they'll get better as the store is opened longer. All in all, it's nice that they have this new spot in the plaza and it really hits the spot when you want this type of dessert, but they don't do it so well that I would go out of my way to make it to this spot. read more

We've tried the Cupertino, CA and Vegas locations - happy to have one in AZ! The space is big and clean, just not much indoor seating other than a long bench against the wall. Staff was very friendly and almost no wait. Got the Guava Ube swirl which was a little too sweet for me, didn't end up finishing. Wish the Guava was more tart than sweet. Kids got cheddar filled Taiyaki which they devoured. I think I may prefer Snowtime over Somi Somi if I'm in the area, but willing try to again maybe just another flavor next time! read more

So cool that this place opened in Arizona! There's not a lot of culture around here so the closest thing you have is chandler. But this plaza is getting more and more influenced by Asian culture because of the 99 ranch, 85 degrees that just opened, ralpha tea, etc. I came on a Sunday with my friends to explore and we wanted some somisomi and I was really curious to see how it compared to others in California since I read mixed reviews about it. It was too cold to get ice cream so this time I tried just the taiyaki which is the fish cone. I tried the original which is just plain with nothing inside and a cheese one. I was really hesitant about the cheese but I wanted to try something new. To my surprise, the batter was really crispy on the inside with a mochi like consistency on the inside and both were pretty good! Opened up near one of my favorite shopping centers 99 Ranch recently. Tried this out with my two kids. The shop itself is pretty spacious but doesn't have much with regards to seating space or tables so be prepared to eat standing or sitting while holding you dessert. We ordered one Ahboong with the Green Tea and Cookies and cream swirl for the kids. They're really generous with the toppings and to top it all off the macaroon they added was fought over by my kids ha. The flavor of the ice cream was really good, I especially liked the green tea/match flavor. The tayaki itself was fresh and warm and the kids gobbled it up (red bean filling btw). Overall, I think it's a great place to visit but be prepared to share as the serving size is pretty large. read more

I have tried a few of the different flavors of the fish shaped pancakes but depending on the flavor it affects what I think of the store. I find that the custard flavor is very good and I like the flavor of it the best because it is what I am used to. I don't like the red beans as much because well they are beans. I don't like the pasty texture of the red bean. Otherwise the red bean flavor and texture is just fine. I like how the custard is creamy and not gooey. I have had gooey custard before and it was very weird. I also like the Nutella flavor and for the same reasons as the other custard flavor. I like the Nutella as it is smooth in texture. Also seems to remind me of chocolate. The fish shape pancakes may take on a little bit of a softer texture. I have also tried the taro but not the cheddar. The taro is also just okay for me. I don't like how it is pasty and that sometimes there's small taro chunks. I like taro to be smooth. Taro is naturally a little grainy like a potato. They are somewhat similar to me in texture and not taste or sweetness levels. read more

I love the soft serve and taiyaki here! It's the perfect dessert spot after eating at any of the restaurants in the area. The only downfall is that when it is busy, the wait takes upwards to 30 minutes for just some ice cream. This is no fault on the workers, or shall I say solo worker at night. They are stuck running from taking orders to having to make everything! They really should start staffing a couple people to help with these busy night rushes! read more

It seems like a lot of the lower star reviews are for the lack of seating as well as portion size - since I didn't have a need for seating (went to Meet Fresh in the same plaza and ate it there while friends ordered tofu pudding) and only had it once long ago in California I guess I had lower expectations? I thought the portion was fine - honestly too much for me I would need to share it with 2 other people. Depends on your appetite though! Ordered the matcha soft serve with red bean filled fish cone. Topped with biscoff crumbs and a strawberry. There were a bunch of other topping options as well. The texture of the cone was just right, crisp on the outside and the custard was warm on the inside. The ice cream flavor was great as well. The toppings were added after the cone was on top of the ice cream already though, so it was hard to fit them in. A plus was that all the toppings are included. I rated less stars because the dining experience was not great. The kiddie-sized tables were not much higher than the seats, so it left little space to comfortably sit and eat the ice cream. The ice cream spilled onto my pants, as I could not eat it over the table. I was not given any napkins, and there were none available near the little tables or seating area, so I had to go to the other end of the room to get napkins to clean up. Somisomi was fantastic over the weekend as they had their trained employees come assist during opening. However, I went again on Monday and they were closed for plumbing issues. Tried again today, Wednesday, only new employees were there. Looks like there were a couple shift leads helping the new hires here and there. Unfortunately, the ice cream machine broke down and only flavor left were milk and pink guava. Newbie did the taiyaki and 3 of 5 were burnt / popped opened. Disappointment last two visits. First visit during grand opening weekend was fantastic. (Pics from first visit during grand opening) Update: 3rd time's the charm? Maybe?..not. I went in on another Wednesday around 2-3pm. Clean store. No customer. Outside hasn't improve much. Still no Open/Close sign. You can hardly tell the store is there. The windows are tinted a decent amount so it's hard to look in. There's the big fish sticker, but nothing says the store is open. You always have to walk up to the door to see. Anyways, today I got Ube and matcha. Ube was decent. (Ube pic added.) Unfortunately, my matcha tasted sour. I've never had sour matcha before but I'll you that it's pretty gross. It might have been tainted by the other flavor of the week. Not sure the ice cream comes out of the same tube, but boy oh boy was my matcha sour. Truth be told the matcha powder topping was matcha than the ice cream. My husband and I checked out SomiSomi for the first time with a friend and it did not disappoint. The fish cone was so fresh, warm and crunchy. The soft serve was really creamy and had a good cookies and cream flavor. I would pass on the macaroon as it was hard and didn't add any flavor value to the ice cream. I chose Nutella as the fill in the fish cone and it was thick and creamy. I wish there was more in the cone as it kind of seemed like it was 1 squirt inside, but overall still really good. Excited to try other flavors and see if it continues to live up to the hype! If you're choosing between Snowtime in Hmart or SomiSomi, I'd choose SomiSomi. read more

My kids (and I) are obsessed with this place. Their specialty is soft serve ice cream served in adorable fish shaped waffle cones. They have different flavors and swirls (combinations of flavors) of ice cream each week, and if you check out their Instagram, you can find out what they're serving. The cones come with your choice of filling (Nutella, custard, taro, or red bean). Toppings are unlimited and range from rainbow sprinkles to Biscoff cookie crumbles and Captain Crunch. You also get your choice of a strawberry or a cute little macaron on top. The ice cream is always delicious and the waffle cones are fresh. Plus I love the ambiance inside... it's a bit like the Apple Store of ice cream! They have a cool wooden bench down one side of the building. It slopes up to form a bar (and, to my toddler, a slide...). Pretty sure if they had a rewards program, we would already be top tier. read more

New well-known taiyaki (fish shaped sweet cone) ice cream spot is now open in Chandler. Choose how you'd like your ice cream, either in a taiyaki, upside down taiyaki with a cup, or just a cup. They offer a swirl/mix of ice creams every week that they switch up. I had the cookie butter and Matcha swirl which was very sweet. I also tried all Matcha ice cream which was delicious and had a nice Matcha taste. Free toppings afterwards, and there were choices for cookie crumbs or cereal like Fruity pebbles or cocoa pebbles. And a choice of a macaron or strawberry on top! The service was quick and friendly as they patiently walked me through ordering. The inside of the shop has cute decorations and places to take pictures with the ice cream. I can't wait for this place to grow more popular! read more

Decided to go with a matcha and black sesame swirl for my first visit. I was pleasantly surprised at the flavor of the black sesame! It was really a delicious pairing. Highly recommend it if you decide to do a swirl for your ice cream. The fish-shaped waffle was also really good and super freshly made. Service was good, but that can always be improved on since they are newly open! With time being open comes more experience for the crew with customer service and hospitality.
