Scoop, scoop, hooray! I'm the 400th review for this business on Yelp. Since trying Handel's at previous Yelp events, I've had on my radar to try at one of their locations. Especially since my boyfriend loves ice cream. Today we made a lunch date when he was visiting town, complete with ice cream to cool us down on this warm July day in Arizona. We opted to eat in my car with air conditioning, though they have bench seating outside. In cooler months, I'm sure that seating is nice to sit at to enjoy your treat. What We Ordered: - Monkey Business scoop in a dipped waffle bowl: My boyfriend throughly enjoyed and said it was very banana forward; which is a plus for him. I personally hate banana, so he had something for once that I didn't take a girlfriend bite out of. - S'mores scoop in a dipped waffle bowl: Very interesting to have the base be graham cracker, but I really enjoyed. Love the little chocolate bits to add a crunch as you eat, though the mini marshmallows have a weird texture to me. Still a solid scoop, and I'll try other flavors when we return. Definitely looking forward to the location opening on Signal Butte, but glad we didn't wait until that opened to try. We've been to several Handel's locations over the years, and unfortunately, this was by far our least favorite. First, the location itself is very small and cramped inside, and there isn't any outdoor seating, which made it difficult to enjoy our ice cream. The biggest disappointment here was the customer service. My friend ordered a milkshake for her two toddlers to share and politely asked if the extra half could be poured into a second cup. The employee had to ask the manager, who immediately said no. My friend explained that other Handel's locations have happily done this before, and even offered to pay for the extra cup. The manager still refused and told her she'd have to purchase two separate milkshakes instead. The request wasn't for extra product--just a second cup for two small children to share. What made the experience worse was the manager's attitude. She came across as rude and dismissive rather than trying to help find a reasonable solution. We understand that every location has its own policies, but customer service goes a long way. Unfortunately, between the cramped space and the poor experience with the manager, we won't be returning to this location. read more

Making fresh hand made ice cream daily! Tons of options from milk shakes, banana splits, sundaes, brownie sundaes, hurricanes, ice cream sandwiches, Handel pops, frozen dipped bananas to "of course" their ice cream! They rotate daily flavors to feature local favorites & seasonal specialties year round. The history & story of this business started back in 1945. Can just see Mrs. Handel's at her husband's gas station window selling her ice cream with fresh strawberries from her garden. Ohio born business that's expanded to over 175 locations in 20 states should say something about growth in churning & not changing the recipe of quality homemade goodness. Note-Handel's has a secret menu. Can vary by location, but if you google their website; check to see what specific off-menu items they are promoting! Offer Pint Perks & Deals plus sorbets & gluten free sorbets. *In response to the business owner: I stated varies by location & mentioned to google it (as you may want to as well). It does exist, so whether it's a new trend or its locations creating their own signature blends-it's definitely out there! Instagram features a few also..* Only downside: Nearly almost $20 for two medium waffle cones. Get that they stack it generously, but that's steep! Ice cream can melt quick, so get a lot of napkins & you gotta eat it fast. Not much seating outside and non indoors. Saw many LARGE active cockroaches on the concrete around ALL of the retail businesses. *In response to the business owner that went from 4 to 3 stars. We were having our ice cream on one of the very "few" outdoor business benches & clearly know what we saw/experienced while trying to enjoy our ice cream cones! Could be a possibility about the "creatures" you spoke of (that generally migrate around aquatic areas). However, they would have been mixed in with the crickets & yes many colossal cockroaches too! Since my grandma was visiting the fam AND it was my younger brother's girlfriend's birthday, we decided to hit up Handel's since we all love it and we hadn't been there as a family in a while. We showed up a little after 6 on a Friday night (in a particularly warm evening in January), and only a couple other people were there. We were greeted with a good amount of employees ready to take our orders. I was the first one to order and I opted for the 4 scoop sample. In it was banana cream pie, sticky fingers, chocolate peanut butter brownie, and graham central station. Each flavor was creamy and delicious. All of us got our own 4 scoop sample (so good thing there were that many employees ready to help and wasn't too busy at the time). My dad also got the chocolate peanut butter brownie and also the NCY cheesecake flavor. We both agreed the brownies in the chocolate flavor tasted like the usual frozen brownie chunks that don't really taste that great. He also commented the NYC cheesecake, while still good, was his least favorite. On the contrary, everything else I got was tasty (shout out to banana cream pie). My brother got the blue Oreo flavor was loved it. My mom loved her four flavors and commented that it had a lot of mix-ins "just like Ben & Jerry's" which she was a big fan of. You get a good amount of ice cream for the money -- we are typically fine with a single each, though we (I) often want to try multiple flavors. I noticed that they have a 4-flavor sampler on the menu now that has 4 smaller scoops and offers that chance. Nice. Good ice cream all year and bring your patience for the line. Also, stay off the stanchion ropes. For some reason, they have to keep signs up because people won't leave them alone. Whilst updating a title at DMV one of the agents recommended Handel's. Never slow to check out a purveyor of ice cream she-who-must-be-obeyed and I beat a hasty trail to Handel's. The staff were very friendly and definitely on top of their game. My partner ordered a chocolate peanut butter ripple malted shake and was mightily impressed. I ordered a scoop of Banana cream pie and chocoholic chunk in a cup. I was richly rewarded by both flavors. We cannot wait to return to taste other flavors amongst the long list of ice creams on offer. The ice cream and service here is really good but unfortunately they got wifeys order wrong "she ate it anyway" it's not one of their better locations. There are only a couple of steel benches out front for people to set down and enjoy their ice cream "no tables", there's no water misters like the other location in Queen Creek or real seating area. Took my kids here for the first time, even though we have seen this for years we never thought to stop by until today. I will say that their ice cream is pretty creamy and rich, but underwhelming. We got the chocolate chip cookie dough, cotton candy, strawberry cheesecake and the praline pecan. Literally, NONE of those ended up having the mix ins in them. Actually the cotton candy has maybe three pieces and the chocolate chip cookie dough had maybe two to three pieces of chocolate chip but absolutely no cookie dough. Nothing like a little sweet valentines day treat! My husband and I took our niece here, post a little valentine's day date. I love some ice cream and had yet been to Handel's before, so was excited to check out a new spot. This large ice cream shop features a one way entrance, that leads you through their line, up to the counter where you order, pay and then a one way exit! I am sure it's to keep things efficient and moving, as the line moved seamlessly and they got out ice cream quickly. They have two menu's one above the large bar where you order and another along the wall, so basically no matter which way you are looking, you can check out your options! They had a ton of different flavors, a couple speciality sundaes, homemade ice cream sandwiches, a few seasonal ice creams and shakes and malts. Waffle and sugar cones, some dipped in chocolate and with sprinkles, as well as waffle bowls. My niece opted for a strawberry cone and they did not mess around. This small size came with three massive scoops. My husband I shared a malt with their cookie dough and oreo ice cream. I don't tend to love strawberry ice cream, but it very good, considering. We enjoyed our malt as well! The malt only came in one size, so no options there, but I think it was a 20 oz, so definitely big enough. My only minor "gripes", was that they do not offer a kids size. It's simply a small. I am sure it's to make things efficient, but it would be a nice option! Second, they don't have any tables or major seating, just a few benches outside. Lastly, it was nearly impossible to get some napkins. They do wrap your cone in one, but they do not have any dispenser elsewhere - honestly, it was more for me than my niece! Overall, they serve up delicious and fresh ice cream, so I would definitely return still, but would be nice if they had some seating available so I could enjoy my treat at the shop. read more

This review is simple. There are a few things you need to know about Handels. First, its amazing ice cream. It's delicious and the flavors are awesome / unique. Take a look in advance to save time ordering since it can be overwhelming when you get to the counter. Second, there will be a line, likely a LONG line. It's normal, and it's ok. It moves with decent speed, they are used to large crowds. Don't let it intimidate you, its worth it. Third, there isn't much space to eat on site. You will probably be standing outside and maybe you get a bench or table. Maybe you eat in your car. If you have a huge group and plan to sit and eat together- that prob won't happen or plan to all stand outside and eat together. Again, this is normal and the ice cream is worth it. That's all you need to know. Plan ahead, plan to wait, and know what you want (or take a pic of the menu while you wait in line), and enjoy your ice cream, it is so good! Had a sweet tooth and was craving ice cream on a rainy night and ended up here! The description stated they make their ice cream each day and we were sold! The ice cream was so delicious. They do run out (just a heads up) and will more more the following day, so keep that in mind. They give you a good amount as well. They put their in twist it seems to some of the ice creams. For example, the buttered pecan had more of a salty taste to it but I enjoyed it. The service was great and the inside is very bright but fun! I usually enjoy coming here, but my recent visit was disappointing. I asked a simple question about the medium size, and Christine, the shift lead, seemed confused and asked me to clarify, which is fine--mistakes happen. But because the store was busy, I felt flustered and decided to just order the sampler to avoid holding up the line. What made me uncomfortable was that after I ordered, Christine turned her back and started talking to a blonde coworker, clearly about me. The coworker looked at me with wide eyes, making it very obvious I was the topic. I felt disrespected and uncomfortable and honestly it's already anxiety induced because there's usually a lot of people in there. I hope management takes this feedback seriously, as experiences like this can quickly turn loyal customers away. Ordered through uber eats and I am WOWED! This is some of the best ice cream I've ever had. We ordered chocolate Oreo and orange sherbet. The chocolate ice cream is just to die for, so rich and you only need a few bites. The orange sherbet is just mouth watering and leaves you wanting more. I've visited this business in Indiana and Ohio and always loved the ice cream. This was my son's and my first time visiting in Gilbert. They have a ton of flavor options and some seasonal flavors and items, such as apple dumplings. Cones, shakes, and blizzard-like items are available, as well. The two gentleman who assisted us were great. I was given a sample and superb service. My son chose a peanut butter shake and was surprised with how big the sizes are. I ordered a small peach waffle cone. It was the largest small I'd ever seen in this world where sizes seem to be getting smaller. It was absolutely delicious! They also have several types of waffle cones to choose from. You can't sit inside but there are benches available outside. We'll definitely be back! You'll regret not checking this place out. I live in Charlotte,NC and our first Handel's just opened last month. It has become my new favorite place for ice cream so when visiting AZ I was excited to see one here. This location had the same flavors but does not offer samples which is a huge bummer. In Charlotte there is no limit on samples. It's super helpful so you can discover what you like. Also in Charlotte for a small you can get up to 2 flavors. Here I was told for a small you can only get one flavor. Despite the differences I still really enjoyed my ice cream and so did the friends I brought with. The staff was also very nice. read more
