Being National Ice Cream Month...I need to add a review of my favorite ice cream shop - Salt and Straw. Salt and Straw is a chain with many locations across the US. My local Salt and Straw is the location in Gilbert adjacent to Agritopia in the Epicenter. This place is always busy for a reason- fast and friendly service and delicious ice cream. It's a smaller shop that's mostly a waiting line and the counter, but has a little extra space for their freezer (for take home pints) and swag rack. The employees are always helpful and I never feel rushed when asking for a few samples. Their ice cream uses top quality ingredients and they have a specialized churning process to make it very creamy. The best part are the 'out of the box' ingredients you won't find in other ice cream parlors. These ingredients can augment the base flavor, add a tasty wrinkle or help neutralize a typically dominant flavor. On this trip, I got a scoop of Huckleberry Oat Crisp with Foraged Porcini. It's on their Monthly Menu Series and limited time, along with 4 other unique flavors. It was amazing and worth sampling at a minimum. They also have traditional flavors but with their special take on it...like the Double Fold Vanilla uses a lot more vanilla beans to really exacerbate the flavor. They have the most unique flavors and combinations you can imagine. Staff is very nice and ask if you want to sample any flavors. Had a couple samples and decided on peanut butter brittle caramel fudge in a waffle cup. It was very tasty. Wife had a chocolate gooey brownie in a waffle cup and she really enjoyed it. read more

Originally from Portland, Salt and Straws have been popping up in a few places across the states. Sweet ice cream (and cakes) and sweet service. I'm drawn to more simple unique flavors and I think S&S has more decadent interesting combinations. Example are Rhubarb Crumble with Toasted Anise and Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper. I tried the sweet pear and blue cheese and you definitely taste the blue cheese...surprisingly good! Honey Lavender is also a tried-and-true flavor. A scoop (cup, cone, waffle) is kind of pricey, like many places now. $6.25 and if you do a split scoop it's .50 more. Pints are $12 which is a better "deal" if your family likes ice cream. Ice cream cakes were $79 :o Service is very friendly and they sell things product memorabilia like tshirts. There is limited outdoor seating. The Gilbert souvenir store offers 10% off if you bring a receipt from S&S. There are a lot of eateries in this area. read more

This ice cream shop had the most fun variety in flavors I have ever been to. Not only was the service so kind and patient but the ice cream was phenomenal. I choose a homemade waffle bowl. The olive oil ice cream was outstanding. Creamy; not overpowering sweet nor to savory. Just perfectly balanced. I added a scoop of strawberry coconut water gelato to make it exceptional. A chain ice cream shop like this is always going to be good. With flavors coming out every month, it's hard not to get something. Especially for the non-dairy people like myself, they always have options! The workers are also friendly and they work fast no matter how long the line is. We stopped by the new Salt & Straw at Epicenter and were blown away by the staff. Even with the usual long lines you find here, the team was incredibly friendly, patient, and welcoming. We grabbed three pints to go--the seasonal pumpkin tiramisu and bananas fosters flavors as well as a classic, pear and blue cheese. (Sorry, I forgot the actual names.) I've been to this location a couple times now and every experience is great. I love that they never make me feel bad for trying different flavors. I love trying their new monthly flavors because they are always crazy and adventurous! I order the Peanut butter brittle in a waffle bowl and it was great. We started going to Salt and Straw when we lived in Los Angeles, and are SO glad they built one here in Gilbert! This location is in a very fun area (Agritopia) and surrounded by cute local shops and restaurants. Even though there is typically a long line, it moves quickly and the staff are always very friendly and helpful. You can sample as many flavors as you would like-and every month they come up with new and creative creations combining flavors you never would have thought would go together! There is a standard flavor list though that is always available if you aren't feeling as culinarily adventurous. Their seasonal menus are so much fun to sample + choose from. Nothing better than ice cream from this craft ice cream store on a hot day. I've been a huge fan for a very long time as they have the most exquisite combinations and flavors. Love that they actually encourage customers to sample as much as they want. I had a couple samples of their limited edition flavors- oiishi strawberry pretzel salad, and goat cheese marion berry habanero (really pleasant spice). Ended up choosing peanut butter brittle caramel fudge (vegan) in a waffle cup and it was delish. I absolutely love their light and slightly sweet homemade waffle cones. Hubby got a waffle cup of chocolate gooey brownie and he loved it as well. They also have merchandise for sale and you can also buy pints of ice cream. It's a new month, new limited editions flavors, so I had to stop by to try the Farmers Market series. It includes two vegan options - Peach Jam Miso Blondie and Pickled Cucumber Sorbet. I asked to try all of the new flavors, but forgot to say not the pickled one because I do not like pickles. When the server handed me the sample, I tried it anyway - bad idea. Definitely not for me! Melon & Prosciutto was okay until I bit into a piece of chewy prosciutto. I like prosciutto but not in this ice cream. I was surprised with the Tomato Gelato with Olive Brittle. It was not bad, though I wouldn't order it. It's creamy and I liked the added crunch! Chocolate Chip Zucchini Bread was decadent as described, and the server said it's the most popular limited edition flavor right now. I ended up getting a kids scoop of the Peach Jam Miso Blondie. Aside from the monthly series, they released a new permanent flavor - Hazelnut Cookies & Cream - and it's vegan! The taste gave me like Ferrero Rocher vibes but not as decadent. Love this location - right next to Matt's and Buck and Rider - it's the perfect chill dessert spot when you don't want that lunch or dinner date to end quite yet. The line moves so quick even with all of us getting samples and the flavors and portion sizes do not disappoint. I'm still sad everytime I get to the bottom of my cup though but it keeps me coming back next time to try more flavors! read more

Its a high end ice cream shop, always clean, always varying their flavors with new and interesting combinations, always with impeccable service and staff. The ice cream texture is also extremely good. There is very little to complain about. On the whole it's a great shop. The only reason I give it 4 stars and not 5 is I love ice cream, but unfortunately Ive never experienced a flavor here I felt was amazing or fell in live with. The flavors are good and always interesting, but I fear in there effort to creat such unique combinations, they have yet to provide me a single flavor that blows me away. read more

Have literally been to every location in California. When someone told me there was one in AZ, I dropped what I was doing, grabbed a cooler, and drove an hour to get here! How did I not know?! Great location in a trendy plaza. Arrived at 8pm on a Saturday and it was BUSY (just like other locations). Line was out the door. Drooled while I was admiring their menu and specialty flavors. Ended up picking Strawberry Rhubarb with Toasted Anise. Absolutely loved the flavor. For the long haul, I bought every carton of Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons they had left in the freezer lol. Salt and Straw has good customer service. I like that we can try the different ice cream flavors before we make our final decisions. Limited edition flavors: Death by Chocolate Chocolate Cake Chocolate barley milk swirled with chocolate caramel fudge, hunks of chocolate cake and chocolate ganache - This ice cream tasted like dark chocolate. I didn't really taste any caramel. I didn't find any textural differences for the chocolate cake and chocolate ganache. The primary flavor was a dark chocolate. This one is good for trying at least once. Chocolate Pistachio Milk and Cookies Nutty pistachio-cashew ice cream flecked with TCHO chocolate stracciatella and crumbles or housemade vegan shortbread. - I didn't have any pistachio or cashew nuts in the sample that were really large pieces. I think that the pistachio and cashews must have been ground into smaller pieces and that the ice cream made them more soft and tender. I thought most of the texture of the ice cream was made up of the shortbread crumbles. I think most of the flavor of this for me was shortbread. Didn't sample - Peanut Butter Brittle Caramel Fudge Creamy coconut vanilla ice cream streaked with peanut butter, a coconut caramel fudge swirl, and flecked with shards of housemade peanut butter brittle. Didn't sample - Bananas Foster w/ Candied Pecans Show-stopping banana-infused coconut cream drizzled with Bananas Foster caramel and studded with candied pecans. Blood Orange Froyo Creamsicle Tart and silky blood orange olive oil sorbet swirled together with creamy Coconut frozen yogurt. - This has a strong orange flavor that was quite tart. Classic flavors: Double fold vanilla Made with Singing Dog Vanilla, which uses twice as many vanilla beans for their extract. - This had a strong vanilla flavor. I almost thought it tasted like sweet cream. It actually has more of a vanilla flavor than a sweet cream flavor. It's good for trying at least once. Chocolate Gooey Brownie Housemade marshmallow fluff in chocolate-y brownie batter. - I think I liked the chocolate gooey brownie flavor more than any of the other chocolate flavors. The marshmallow fluff gave the ice cream a good chewy texture. I don't think that I could actually taste the marshmallow in the ice cream. It's good for trying at least once. Some of the other flavors are more unique and exciting. read more

We come here every month to try their new flavors! This month's theme is Farmer's Market, and I couldn't resist trying all five new options. The peach miso blondie was my pick for the night--it had the perfect balance of sweetness. I was surprised to learn it's vegan! It was so creamy, I would have sworn it had dairy. I ordered the kid-size scoop in a regular waffle cone (yes, adults can order the kid's size, too!). The server was incredibly patient with our group and went above and beyond to ensure there was no cross-contamination for my daughter, who has a peanut allergy. They grabbed a fresh pint of salted, malted, chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream and used a clean scooper just for her. When we arrived around 9:45 p.m., there was no line, but by the time we sat down, the line was nearly out the door. Outside, there are three round, picnic-style tables and plenty of benches nearby. It was 845 pm and they close at 11. There was one other party in line and 3 employees I could see. We wish they had more seating available. We usually have to eat in our car. We've been regulars since this location opened in Gilbert, and it's one of our favorite spots for a sweet treat. We usually go for their classic flavors always delicious and consistent while the seasonal ones can sometimes be a hit or miss. There's usually a line, and though the space is a bit small with no indoor seating, it still works for a quick stop. The service is always friendly; they happily offer samples, which makes the experience even better. Their flavors are truly unique, and the ice creams are creamy, flavorful, and perfectly textured. Our go-to flavors are Pear & Blue Cheese, Chocolate, Honey Lavender, and Coffee. The kids especially loved the recent Halloween specials! Thanks to fellow Elite Travis T. for telling me that this Salt & Straw exists! I thought it was a CA thing, but apparently not. The location is in a good spot and it can get pretty busy in here, so be patient! The interior looks similar to the Little Italy location in San Diego. However, the layout here is wider than it is long. They let you sample the ice cream with tiny golden spoons. I decided on the Blue Corn Chocolate w/Chiltepin Caramel on top & Sea Salt w/ Caramel Ribbons underneath. I was not at all disappointed with my choice! I try to be adventurous whenever I come here. My top fave is the Arbequina Olive Oil. It's weird to say it tastes buttery and creamy, but it is, and it absolutely makes me drool just thinking about it! Now that the weather is warming up, be patient if you arrive and spot the long line from a mile away. The parking lot can get very congested during peak times, so be mindful of that. Although their prices are a bit high in my opinion, they offer unique flavors you will not find elsewhere. It's just a matter of time before I return!! read more

We are fortunate here in Arizona to have a Salt & Straw location. This Portland based ice cream company has really made a name for itself since its inception in 2011. Salt & Straw is known for their exotic ice cream flavors like Pear & Blue Cheese, Arbequina Olive Oil and Strawberry Honey Balsamic w/ Black Pepper. They are partially owned by film star and wrestler The Rock. Salt & Straw has their regular menu flavors, but also feature rotating ones throughout the year. They even have flavors found only on the West Coast and the East Coast. This Salt & Straw is located at Epicenter at Agritopia in Gilbert. I have been to the location at Downtown Disney in the past. The store is really clean and the customer service has always been great every time that I have been here. They let you sample flavors if you can't decide on what to get. You can also grab a pint to-go if you want to enjoy an evening on the couch with some Salt & Straw ice cream. I have tried a number of flavors now and have enjoyed each one of them. You can't go wrong with their signature Sea Salt w/ Caramel Ribbons. Walking around Agritopia during early evenings and a stop at the Salt & Straw always makes for a relaxing night out. read more

The service here is great & the employees are super nice, very helpful, & have full knowledge of all the varieties of ice cream flavors. So many interesting ones to choose from. I've included menu board pictures so you can see exactly what I mean. TIP: You can sample flavors before you order too...& can sample as many as you want! The employees are very accommodating & encourage sampling! After perusing the boards while customers ahead of me were being helped & served, my go to was the Sea Salt & Caramel Ribbons in a waffle cup. Wow, is it ever good! It is very tasty & just the perfect combination of flavors! Soooooo yummy!!! The shop is cute, very clean, & well stocked with products you can buy plus pints of ice cream to take home or enjoy on the go. It's a little pricey but it's gourmet ice cream & they also offer non-dairy flavors for those who are lactose intolerant. There are a few outdoor tables for your dining enjoyment. This place is the perfect dessert after a meal at Buck & Rider a few doors to the west, after a cocktail & snacks at Undertow, or a meal at any of the other fine dining establishments in the complex.
