Looking for Korean food for lunch and stumbled upon Sonamu in the Richmond district. We've tried them a few years back and thought to revisit them. This spot is a simple, non fancy, mom & pop shop. The waitstaff was gracious and accommodating. There was only one other table other than ourselves occupying this restaurant on a Thursday around 12:30 pm. ***OUR PICKS*** BULGOGI MARINATED SPICY PORK & RICE ~ good amount of spicy pork and we were able to request lettuce for this dish. The lettuce was refreshing since the pork was sweet and spicy. It made the meal so good much better. But we always run out of rice when ordering this dish. 4/5 DOLSOT BEEF BIBIMBAP ~ We asked for extra crispy but it burnt the rice some. Definitely crunchy rice and more smoky. Although I'm not a fan of burnt rice, it was still a tasty dish. 4/5 Probably one of the few restaurants who accommodates requests for lettuce when eating bulgogi. We appreciate that there was no additional charge for it. We were also able to get a 2nd helping of banchan too.

My friend and I came in late on a Saturday night after a beach day and walking around Golden Gate Park. Water and hot tea are offered as soon as you are seated. The service is very polite and you could tell that this a family run establishment. We were hungry and devoured the banchan fairly quickly. The banchan had generous portions. The sweet potato was not too sweet. The kimchi was mild. The veggies were very fresh and crunchy. The leek pancake is a bigger portion than expected and perfectly crispy. The tteobokki is not how you would usually expect from any other Korean restaurant. There is no fanfare with melted cheese. It's simple with onions some fish cake. The consistency of the rice cake was perfectly chewy and the sauce paired nicely. The dolsot bibimbap came out really fast compared to everything else. There's a fried egg on top with the beef and the veggies. Even tho it's hot, this one miraculously didn't burn the rice too quickly while mixing and I think that's a plus. The tofu stew took a while to come out of the kitchen. But worth the wait because it was what I was craving. It was a chilly night and the soft tofu really heals the soul. It was fairly mild compared to other tofu stews I've had. Thanks to Sonamu for a cozy night. There was Looney Tunes playing on the TV and plenty of seating. Totally recommend to anybody who has a large group and wants to eat some Korean comfort food. It also works for solo diners and for a smaller group as well. The space to dine in is big enough.

service was a little lackluster -- we had to approach the staff to order, to get the check and takeout boxes, etc. they were really sweet though, just inattentive. the banchan was nice. the bibim naengmyeon ($22) could be a lot spicier and drier, it wasn't spicy in the slightest. the beef was also tough and kind of bland. the kimchi jiggae ($22) was nice and comforting, but they used firm tofu instead of soft tofu.

My first Yelp review in 2026 and I want to write about the wonderful experience my family and I had at Sonamu Korean Restaurant in SF. Exactly a month ago on Sunday, 1/11, my family stumbled across this hole-in-a-wall Korean restaurant when I was craving Korean short ribs. At that time, it was getting a bit late for dinner, close to 8pm. The young college boy was our server and he was super attentive and sweet! He got two high chairs for our young toddler boys. Our youngest toddler spilled his cup of water, not once, but twice, and without hesitation (or irritation), the waiter came over and wiped down our table with couple of clean towels. Shortly after, he took our orders still with a friendly smile. We ordered the large braised short ribs and an ox tail soup for our boys. The waiter kept refilling our banchan plates with a smile. When he brought over our food, he said he already packed one of the three rice bowls for us to go since we probably would not finish everything. Towards the end, he helped pack our leftovers and even offered to pack us some more of their homemade kimchee and banchan to go. He was so sweet that without even saying out loud, my husband and I knew he deserved a larger tip. Food was surprisingly very good! The braised short ribs fell off the bone. Unlike Daeho, which was known to be one of the top Korean places to get braised short ribs in the Bay Area, this place was balanced without a burst of crazy flavors. It tasted very homey and comforting! The ox tail soup came with noodles and was very tasty! Definitely will come back here again! Excellent service, tasted food, and very modern with cleanliness!

Happy New Year Everyone, starting the year with 5 Star Reviews! Quality/Quantity - Today was a feast, we got the following and all of which was good: TTeok-bokki - Two orders of spicy rice cake. We are ALL used to this coming in a thicker sauce. This was more soupier than we preferred. But no worries, I grabbed a bottle of Gochujang and made our own sauce, lol. Fried Chicken Wings - Large, 10 pieces. Too spicy for most people, but perfect for me. But I also would have preferred more honey in the sauce of my KFC. Haemul Pajeon - Seafood pancake, the best of the appetizers. Generous amounts of seafood. Ox Tail Bone Soup - Two orders. Bibimbap Beef - Two orders. Galbi - 3 orders and my usual choice. My once a month red meat cheat, lol. Cooked/grilled well. But I was surprised on how little the bed of onions was. Sundubu Jjigae - Beef tofu stew, my wife's usual order. Her favorite. Sundubu Jjigae - Seafood tofu stew. Tteok Mandu-guk - Rice cake dumpling soup; my daughter's favorite. All of them were good and of decent portions. 6 Banchans - The rice cake, tofu banchan are my favorite. I think I got thirds! Ambiance - Small local restaurant, support local. Semi private room available. Service - 5 stars. Never felt pressure to leave. We added 4 more people to our group. No problem redoing the tables to accommodate us. The restaurant was less busy than expected. Price - $564 which includes the 18% gratuity. Expensive but worth it. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since April of 2023, we are regular customers.

Came here with a friend on Sunday since our first choice was overly packed and we didn't want to wait for food. When we arrived, we got seated immediately. It was too busy but also didn't feel slow since they only had one waiter. The waiter did a very good job attending to 5+ tables by himself. Menu had good choices and the selections were what you expect. Only down side was that I didn't see any combo options. This usually helps us decide quicker than picking individual dishes. Our choices were the kimchi soup, kimchi fried rice, and the japchae. The bonchon options were good. No complaints there.

Food - Craving soup for this cold weather! - Big portions - Yummy comfort food - Ordered the usual items - Seafood noodles was the first time I've tried, it was hearty and noodles were doughy - Got our bonchon refilled Service - Only one waitress, very kind and attentive Ambiance - Huge dining space - Good for big and small parties

My wife and I discovered this hidden gem while driving around sf trying to satisfy our Korean food cravings. The restaurant was tidy and had kpop videos playing on the tv so the vibe was chill. The food was authentic and delicious! It seems like a popular door dash destination but going into the restaurant is so worth it! Service is great everyone is very nice. A great place to eat with friends, or with your significant other! We commuted from past Walnut Creek and will absolutely be coming back again.

It would be five stars if I didn't burn my tongue on the soup! Actually bubbling with so much heat that I couldn't wait to try it, and I burned my mouth. The servers are super friendly and navigated the menu. I love Kimchee and they delivered a yummy meal tonight! We had the tofu soup and the beef Kimchee rice dish..

Japchae at Sonamu Korean Restaurant in San Francisco.

Korean food is done right when it is as nicely served and prepared as it is at Sonamu Korean Restaurant. Located on Geary Boulevard between 21st and 22nd Avenues in the heart of San Francisco's Richmond neighborhood, Sonamu Korean Restaurant opened almost three years ago in what was once a Turtle Tower Restaurant that was left abandoned for many years after closing. Now completely cleaned out, complete with a massive flat-panel television screen that makes it perfect for watching endless amounts of K-Pop music videos makes for an enjoyable time. The word "Sonamu" translates into pine tree, and it specifically references the Korean red pine, which is a significant cultural symbol representing longevity, constancy, and the resilient spirit of the Korean people, often considered the national tree of the nation of Korea. Family-owned and operated, Sonamu Korean Restaurant joins the competitive Korean dining scene along the bustling Geary Boulevard corridor in San Francisco. What drew us here for a recent dinner was their compact, seemingly well-curated menu. It's the kind where you feel confident you can't go wrong with whatever you order. On a chilly San Francisco evening, our party of six was craving something warm and comforting, especially soups and stews, and Korean food immediately came to mind. Sonamu proved to be the perfect choice for a cozy and satisfying night out, as perusing our Yelp app for Korean cuisine in the city, Sonamu Korean Restaurant immediately topped the list, especially with the strong reviews from my fellow Yelpers, and the fact that reservations for our party of six could be made on their Yelp business website only made things easier. The menu at Sonamu Korean Restaurant is separated into categories including Appetizers, Pan-Fried Fish, Noodles, Sautéeds, Bibimbap, BBQ, Pot Stew/ Casseroles/ Soups, and their Beverage menu. We started our meal by ordering their Haemul-Pajeon, which was their seafood and scallion pancake to share. Complete with sesame soy dipping sauce, it was the perfect hearty meal to share between us all. For our entrée, we decided to each order our own entrées and share what we were able to. I was in the mood for a stew, and so I ordered their Kimchi-Jjigae Soup with my recommended choice of pork. Others in our dining party ordered their Sudubu-Jigae, which was their soft tofu stew with their choice of seafood; Godeungeo-Guil, which was their not so boneless Pan-Fried Mackerel; Japchae, which were their traditional clear yam noodles served with beef and vegetables; and their Galbi, which are traditional marinated Beef Short Ribs. All of our orders, with the exception being the Godeungeo-Guil and Japchae, came with a bowl of steamed white rice, and all of our dishes came with your traditional banchan, which were small Korean inspired dishes that pair with your entrée with small bites ranging from kimchee to sautéed potatoes to bean sprouts to spicy cucumber slices. As we noshed on our pancake and banchan, our entrées would come out slowly. I really enjoyed my Kimchi-Jjigae, which was nicely spicy, just as you'd expect from a good kimchi stew. I did wish there was a bit more pork in the dish, as it felt slightly light on protein, but adding extra bean sprouts and kimchi from the banchan helped round it out nicely. Two real standouts of the meal were the japchae and galbi, both perfectly cooked and full of flavor. They're great examples of how well-executed traditional Korean cuisine can be when done with care, something Sonamu Korean Restaurant clearly delivers. Our total bill was $195 which included sales tax and an automatic 18 percent gratuity, which considering how much food we enjoyed upon this visit, which included a little extra stew for me to take home along with a number of bowls of steamed white rice. At Sonamu Korean Restaurant they are exemplifying a homey existence here on Geary Boulevard, and I cannot wait to return for additional visits to explore more of their menu. As their dining room continued to fill with customers upon this visit, I continue to root for their continued success.

This used to be the old turtle tower. Hella miss that spot. My family and I couldn't decide on a birthday dinner location and last minute decided on Sonamu. The ban Chan took a bit long to get served, despite being one of three tables being occupied. The 2 servers seemed a bit slow in everything they did. Looked like they only had one chef in the kitchen. Everything came out one by one right after the other. The galbi Jim was $80 for a pretty small portion, I'm not sure if that was worth it, although the meat was pretty tender. The kimchi pancake was pretty good, same with the cold noodle. I didn't get to try to ttebokki and didn't get a photo of the soup but the ox bone soup was pretty salty. Probably perfect if you're hungover. Overall food was good, just pricey for what it is. The appetizers/ sides were around $20 something per dish. Our wait for our food didn't take too long. Come give this mom and pop shop a try. I hope they're able to sustain and stay open! We want more Korean restaurants in the Richmond!!

Newly remodeled from the previous Turtle Tower restaurant. Service on the slow side. As for food, Chicken Wings - good PaJeon - not bad. Crusty on the outside. Banchan - simple. Generous on the fish cake but fish cakes were too fishy and tough. Tteokbokki - very different from other Korean places. Quite disappointed. Galbi (Korean short ribs) - flavor was good but on the dried side from overcooked. Galbi Tang - good but too salty. Tofu stew - broth was just ok. too watery. Ox bone soup - a little bit greasy but my favorite. Just wished it was less grease floating on top.

On a Saturday afternoon, my friends and I were craving Korean food, and I gave the recommendation of Sonamu. I learned about Sonamu in the Richmond district, as it was vetted by an SF native. The restaurant was quite empty, with more people opting for to-go orders than eating in. For a group of three, this is what we ordered: Fried Dumpling Appetizer - The sauce complemented the crispy dumplings. Japchae - Not too greasy, tender meat, and a good portion of veggies to meat to noodles. Dolsot Bibimbap with Seafood - Crispy rice at the bottom topped with delicious kimchi and an assortment of vegetables and seafood! The portions were generous and matched the price point in SF, and we had leftovers to take home. My friends had a great first experience here, and I will continue to recommend this as a good Korean restaurant in this area!

Ambiance is fine too. I have only dined in but I had to order take out in Jan 2026. The only way to order take out in advance is to order through DoorDash. I was in a huge rush so that's what I did. One order of E1 Seolleong Tang is $26 on DoorDash. If you were to eat in the restaurant, it's only $20. It's a huge mark up. I get that DoorDash needs to make money but this is too much. The only way I can avoid the DoorDash price is to get to the restaurant and order in person. I'll to do that next time. Parking in this neighborhood can be very challenging

By 6pm, all the tables were filled and by the time we left at 7 the waitlist was about 35-50 min. The galbi jjim was flavorful and had good balanced mix of sweet and spicy! We only got as mild spice and that was good enough for us. The beef was tender but we felt like there should have been more rice cakes and veggies. I guess that's why people liked to add extra. Service was quick but could be more attentive since server never checked up on us once our food came. Was hoping to get some more banchan :(

Once you step through the doors, however, you're greeted by a space that feels both cozy and contemporary, with an effortlessly stylish atmosphere. Even the restroom was thoughtfully designed and remarkably comfortable--a small detail, but one that speaks to the restaurant's overall attention to detail. We began with the Uni Scallop Toast and Mulhwe as appetizers. As someone who is typically not a fan of uni due to its pronounced brininess, I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed the toast. The bright citrus sauce balanced the richness of the uni beautifully, while the contrasting textures from the crisp toast and delicate scallop created a harmonious bite. The scallop also helped mellow the stronger oceanic notes of the uni. It was a creative and memorable dish unlike anything I've had before. The Mulhwe, a Korean-style fish salad, was dressed in a refreshing apple vinaigrette that gave it a light, summery citrus character. The fish itself had a pleasantly chewy texture--firmer than salmon--with no trace of fishiness. While enjoyable, it didn't leave quite the same impression as the uni toast and was my least favorite dish of the evening. For our entrées, we ordered the Galbi Steak and Pork Jowl Bossam. Both dishes showcased exceptional execution. The meats were cooked perfectly, but what stood out even more was the precision in preparation. The steak was expertly sliced and incredibly tender--so much so that even with braces, it was effortless to enjoy. The pork jowl achieved an ideal balance between lean meat and luscious fat, creating a rich yet satisfying bite. We enjoyed the meal so much that dessert was non-negotiable. The Matcha Tiramisu was a creative interpretation of the classic. A dome of mascarpone cheese encased ladyfinger biscuits at its center, accompanied by a vibrant matcha ganache sauce. The dessert leaned far less sweet than traditional tiramisu, allowing the earthy matcha and creamy mascarpone flavors to shine. It was elegant, balanced, and a wonderful way to end the meal. Lastly, the service was outstanding. Our server was soft-spoken, patient, and genuinely attentive throughout the evening, making the experience feel warm and welcoming. Considering the quality of the food, thoughtful presentation, ambiance, and service, I found the pricing to be completely justified. As a pleasant surprise, I later learned that Bansang is part of the same restaurant group behind Daeho--a detail that certainly explains the level of quality we experienced.

The toast, scallops, and uni were all served at the same temperature, and the sauce was barely noticeable, adding little to the dish. A contrast in temperature, texture, or a more pronounced sauce would have made it much more enjoyable. The Scallop & Shrimp Salad was overly sweet, which overpowered the delicate flavors of the seafood. The Chicken Wings were decent, but at 4 wings for $18, they felt overpriced. The Mushroom Silk Tofu was beautifully presented and visually appealing. The Black Cod was cooked perfectly--moist, tender, and flaky. However, while the fish itself was excellent, the sauce was forgettable and didn't leave a lasting impression or elevate the dish. Overall, the food was mediocre. While each dish had potential, the flavors often felt disconnected and lacked harmony. Combined with the expensive price point, the overall dining experience didn't justify the cost. The ambiance is lovely, but I left hoping for a more memorable meal. Wouldn't come back.

Granted we were a bit late for our reservation, we ended up having to wait another 30-40 mins. The place (2nd floor) is small & awkward. You can also feel whenever the table next to us got up and stomped/yelled/moved in their chairs-- which was really often. The basic AYCE menu is fairly limited-- esp for the side options. The ONLY reason I give a 2 star is 1 star for the food which was decent, but nothing I couldn't get at another restaurant to be honest. And half of that star goes to the sweet waitress who tried her best with us. I came in with my boyfriend maybe an hour before break time midday (unbeknownst to us) as the sign outside is faded and in LIGHT blue marker on a soju standee. Pro tip: maybe you should update that off to the side sign in small letters as well as your closing time on google + Apple Maps before you grumpily yell at your customers to leave AFTER taking our money and giving us food (which btw we were there about 30 minutes). Or don't seat us at all. Thanks! Would not recommend.

My friend went inside and a server reluctantly came to our table. We ordered $90 worth of food and enjoyed people walking around. When the food came the waitress brought the check with the food and asked for our credit card. We hadn't taken a bite yet. They never offed us to refill our glass of water. When we did go to pay they asked us if the credit we were using was ours and asked for his id. They seemed to treat the other guest better. Maybe it's because we are Black Americans or maybe they just suck. The food was subpar the fried chicken was overcooked and my stomach hurt all last night. I live up the street on Bush so this would be a local spot. The service was terrible so they will never get my business again. Yes black people live in the neighborhood and eat Korean food and have credit cards.

It turns out people collect their bottle caps in clear capsules. Fun idea. We were very pleased to hear Woodz for most of our dining experience. I love jokbal, and I've never had it served in this style. Usually I've had large platters of sliced meat, but this was a bowl of the boney parts. It was so delicious. It melted right off the bone, and it had a little heat. I want to go back for this alone. Also enjoyed a dish of kimchi fried rice and sotteok sotteok with a happy hour priced soju.

Super crispy and flavorful. - Bossam: was alright. About 5 pieces. Came with sauce, but could have used more marination and flavor. Also wish there was a lettuce to wrap with. - Pork bangbang: this was tender and super flavorful. - Stairway to heaven: this was a nice surprise. The sushi was presented in a really cool way and the quality was really good. - Fresh lemon soju: I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it looked like lemon slices in soju. But it was really good and I appreciated the freshness of the lemon. Overall, it was a great place for a GNO.

I first started eating at this place around 1990 and have at times stopped going once I moved out of the city. I try to go at least once a year. Have always enjoyed their clams, dried fried chicken, jia jiang mian, and seafood noodle soup. Clams were still plentiful, plump, and very fresh. Noodle were still good. The owner recommended I try the Jjamppong and tubot. The jjamppong like their other noodles were good but the standout was the turbot: steamed to perfection, fresh, and tasty. I can't compare it to other fish but it was soft, smooth, and buttery. I have seen the owner before cooking in the kitchen but it looks now father time has caught up and he is thoroughly enjoying helping out in the front. He was talkative and pleasant to talk to.

So I found this place and we walked in with few customers. We ordered a soup, and were about to order something else when the server/cook suggested we order the meal for 3. He let us substitute the white rice for fried rice and cashew chicken for lemon chicken that we wanted. Boy was it a real treat. We added a chicken chow mein and we weren't disappointed. All in all, we came out stuffed with leftovers, and great service to boot. We were the only ones in the restaurant at the time which was surprising, how great the food and service were. Come here and you won't regret it!

The wait for the dish was almost 25 mins but all worth it !The complimentary soup and banchan were huge and alright. This is my wife's favorite SF Korean restaurant, so I am glad that she was able to join me on this trip. Actually, my guest was the one that requested Korean today. LOL. Today, my guest ordered the following: Soft Tofu Soup - Complimentary. Now this has the most flavor of all the dishes. It also came out piping hot, see picture. Seafood Pancake - Overall good, I appreciate the precut slices, thanks. Makes eating and dividing easier. Marinated Chicken - Decent portions, tender, etc. But with minimum flavor. Broiled Fish, Broiled Mackerel - My guest loves fish, but she did not eat too much of this. So more food to bring back to the house for her. Stir-Fried Vermicelli - Good, but you can almost not mess this up. Actually, I make a pretty good Japchae. :) Banchan - 9 options; good variety and with decent to generous portions. Actually, all the dishes came out steaming, piping hot, and fresh. If you do not like spicy food, this is the place for you. Most, if not all, dishes including the banchan are not spicy. Atmosphere - Good size local restaurant. Table or booth seating. Private room in the back available. Hibachi style dining available. 2 clean bathrooms. See picture. Open 5 days a week from 11am to 8pm or 9pm, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Street parking, it was not too bad. I got a space a few blocks away. Service - 3 stars. The owner is typically friendly but did not greet us today?!?! One waitress was extremely more professional than the other. I think the other waitress was in a bad mood?!?! It was not easy asking for stuff, tea refills, water, utensils, more banchan, etc. Price - $120 + tip. Reasonably priced for Korean food, especially because my guest will get another meal out of it from all our leftovers. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since...??? I have been coming here for 20+ years. Maybe 30+ years...? Or am I outdating myself...

Been here a couple of times already and the service never failed. Even came here during the Cherry Blossom Festival and the staff were still friendly / accommodating. They even put a spicy sauce on the side of one of the katsu plates when we mentioned that my dad couldn't handle all that haha. This cozy spot mainly focuses on katsu plates, but I like how they had off menu or specials to choose from if you'd like another option. I will say though them katsu plates were just chef's kiss. The meat is pounded thin enough where it's still juicy and tender, but doesn't affect the exterior from being crunchy and a bit flaky. Nothing was dry here yallll! I also like how it already comes with miso soup and salad. Huge fan of that Hamachi Truffle special though. Think of a citrusy flavor from the ponzu, fresh fish, a bit of micro greens, and a thin slice of jalapeño that just ~works~ on a cute wooden spoon that you want to steal I could honestly eat like 5 spoons of this. I'd skip on the calamari as it was kind of skimpy to share with a large group. Only note was that their fried katsu curry was a bit underwhelming with having more slices of carrots than potato! Would love to come back if I am ever in the area.

We stepped inside to put our names on the list. While we waited outside we checked out their menu, which was conveniently displayed on their window. The dishes sounded great and it helped us decide what to order before we were even seated. The restaurant was on the smaller side, so seating was a tad cramped, but overall it felt cozy. They had a cute neon light with their name. We got a couple appetizers, which included the pan fried dumplings and tteokbokki. I ordered the Spicy Japchae for my main dish. They brought the banchan out pretty quickly, which we all devoured in seconds because we were so hungry. Then our main dishes started coming out of the kitchen. My spicy japchae was just the right amount of heat. Spicy enough to still be enjoyable. While eating our main dishes the pan fried dumplings came out, which was odd since we ordered it as an appetizer. And the tteokbokki we had ordered, never was added to our order by our waiter. After being told that by another waiter, we just decided to cancel it. The meal was pretty filling without feeling too heavy. Overall, it was decent.
