This veteran Hong Kong café in Vancouver was one of my regular spots over ten years ago. Under new management and a new name, the menu remains largely similar and food is still alright. The chicken noodles have wonderfully tender, flavourful chicken paired with mediocre noodles. The satay beef rice noodles were plain; its preparation differs greatly from authentic Hong Kong style. The chicken steak sandwich and fried egg were decent. The overall quality has slightly dropped from before. My main gripe is the $2 surcharge for ice in drinks, which feels unfair. Worth a stop if you're nearby, but not worthy of a special trip. read more

Stopped here for dinner with my wife around 6pm on a Saturday. We wanted something easy, and this was close by. As we entered, the first thing I noticed was signage saying all dinner prices are 25% off (except steaks) if you pay cash, so that sounded like a good deal. The space itself was quite average for a HK cafe. Not too special, but clean enough. There might have been 4 or 5 other tables with customers. Our order took a surprising amount of time to fill. It would say close to 20 to 25 minutes, which is very slow by HK cafe standards. The food itself was fairly average. Overall, it was ok. Nothing special, but a 25% cash discount makes it feel like a pretty good value. read more

Happened to be in the area and decided to check this place out. I was completely blown away by the quality of the food here. It's a standard hk cafe and had the A+B options. Went with the bacon and eggs with hashbrown (forgot to pic) and the beef brisket noodle soup with flat rice noodle and includes a hot milk tea. The bacon and eggs were standard, but the bacon you get (2pcs) is somewhat larger and thicker than what you would normally get. Eggs were made well over easy and hashbrown was the frozen variety like the ones from mcds. The highlight tho was the milk tea and the beef brisket noodles. The milk tea came hot, rich, and deep in flavour. The beef brisket noodle soup was probably one of the best you can ever have in Vancouver. Deep brown beef broth with the proper aromatics, and the beef so tender with the right amount of fat to meat ratio. Loaded with chunks too. Simply perfect. Service was quick and efficient. And the place is big and clean and well lighted and ventilated. For dinner, i saw if u paid by cash you get 25% off after 6pm. Wow! I will be back for that for sure. Cheers! Happy eating! read more

Appreciated that there was a generous amount of veggies with this dish. Singapore noodles was average - nice amount of ingredients but the flavor was a little lacking. Tasty and slightly hidden HK style cafe on Broadway, between Cambie and Oak. Parking is available beneath the building in the gated lot. Call in beforehand for the staff to open the gate. The interior is pretty plain. Reminds me a bit of a deserted department store for some reason. The venue is L-shaped, which provides plenty of lighting from the patio style windows. Staff are friendly and helpful. No complaints. The food is of pretty decent quality and quantity. They have lunch combos, which includes an entree (choice of starch), soup (borsche or cream soup), and drink. I had the seafood in cream sauce combo, borscht, and hot lemon tea. The seafood was decently fresh, and mixed well with the spaghetti. Borscht hit the spot too. Lemon tea was tasty. Overall a good place to check out if one wants this kind of food in the area. Song cafe is a couple of blocks down from Broadway city hall station. The restaurant itself is somewhat hidden and storefront isn't obvious. The prices for the breakfast menu are rather affordable considering today's economy. The food is average and neither good nor bad. The noodles were a bit overcooked and beef too chewy. The Hong Kong milk tea was a let down as it wasn't very rich. Maybe I became too picky after all those HK food options in Richmond. Nonetheless, it was overall a positive experience and a good place to chat with friends. read more

This has to be the worst stir fried rice noodle with beef I've ever had. I could already tell from the colour that it was going to be salty af. It was super dark and shiny -indicating a ton of soy sauce and oil. It was so salty I just couldn't finish it. The noodles were so oily they slipped through my fork and chopsticks so i could barely pick it up. I only remembered to take a picture at the end because i was hungry. Maybe their baked dishes are better, but I wouldn't go for the stir fried stuff. I will say though for the price it was okay, it comes with a hot drink and is decently sized so it can probably be shared between 2 people. The service was also good - waitress was nice. Great spot to eat at if you're missing Hong Kong! The staff here are very friendly and they have Cantonese TV shows playing (which we ended up really getting invested in haha) The food is slightly more expensive but the portion sizes were pretty big. We got the fried rice with shrimp and egg combo, pork chop combo and two pineapple buns with butter. Overall it was quite good and I want to come back to try their HK breakfast items! read more

Visited Vancouver for a few days and decided to try this HK cafe amongst the many other choices based solely on how closely pictures of their baked pork chop rice resemembled those in Macau. It did not disappoint at all. The first bite of the pork chop with the tomato sauce instantly reminded me of the taste of my childhood in Macau. Although there are some decent HK cafes in Southern CA, I find that all the baked pork chop rice here are slathered in too much cheese and the tomato sauce flavor is a little different than those I remember from Macau. However, Song Cafe's pork chop rice had only a minimal amount of cheese and the tomato sauce shines through. We also had the beef stew curry and kid's meal that came with 3 chicken wings, spaghetti with meat sauce and fries plus juice or ice cream, and all entrees came with a soup and drink as well. Every dish tasted wonderful and authentic and I missed the restaurant the next day back in CA. Our server was also very friendly and attentive. We will definitely come back if we ever visit Vancouver again. read more

VERDICT/VALUE New staff, new decor, and new menu brings hope for a great Hong Kong-style dining experience, but unfortunately IMHO, it's just the ghost of what iCafe was. === 2. FOOD Pan Fried Chicken with Egg Instant Noodle ($18.95) It's alright - though to be fair, it's hard to mess up this dish. The price is a little steep (even by post-pandemic standards); the key holding me back on giving it a more favorable review was the chicken steak: iCafe and others (including Jimmy's in Richmond) still does it better. Choice of 2 Meats Set ($23.85) I chose fish fillet and chicken steak plus $3 for extra vegetables instead of a starch. I would not do it again - the chicken was OK but the fish was tasteless and even the onion sauce couldn't save it. The extra veg for $3 was surprisingly bleh - primarily chopped wok chop which also didn't have much flavour. It came with a soup (I chose borscht) and a drink, which were fine. Eggplant & Minced Pork Rice ($18.25) It was alright - not much to write home about for this one other than portion seize is teetering on the smaller side. === 3. SERVICE Service was decent - the staff spoke Cantonese to each other and (happily for me), English as well fluently. Times to order, serve, and check out/pay were decent. === 4. ENVIRONMENT It has the makeover iCafe should have done - removal of the tall bench seats opened up sightlines; the new furniture is welcome and adds a touch of luxury every the white plastic chairs there previously. Someone cleaned the windows too - and finally cleared up the front counter. The washrooms seem a little brighter than before (at least on the men's side - they finally added a light and re-did the countertop). Parking is worse than before though, as there seems not to be an option to park in covered parking across the street not at the Holiday Inn any longer, so it's up to your luck on the metered street spots. read more

We recently visited Song Cafe (formerly i-Cafe on Broadway), a newly opened Hong Kong-style cafe in the Fairview neighbourhood. The menu at Song Cafe is quite extensive, offering a variety of dishes, each accompanied by a serving of soup and a hot beverage - a standard Hong Kong cafe combo. Visited on a Sunday ~2pm and was excited to try songs cafe for the first time since their opening. It was quite busy at the time, with a few open tables to be seated immediately. The restaurant is also on a 2nd level with a view of the mountains which added vibe points. They had typically HK cafe dishes on their menu and so I wanted to try dishes I am familiar with. The lunch menu came with a drink and choice of borscht or cream soup. For my drink I ordered a cold milk tea (cold drinks are $2 extra), which tasted very smooth and strong. The drink was also quite large, which is definitely a good problem to have, but I would've preferred the option of a small or large size drink for a different fee. The cream soup tasted average, with chunks of fish in the soup. For my main, I ordered cheese baked meat sauce chicken chop spaghetti and I was impressed! It came out with a layer of baked cheese on top which was visually appealing. The chicken cutlet was very tender and flavourful, and the sauce wasn't too sweet. Other than slightly over cooked spaghetti noodles, I was pretty happy with my dish. Given the proximity to downtown Vancouver, I would return again, however the prices are more expensive than HK cafes in Burnaby/Richmond. read more

Greeted right away by server and asked for how many, we were meeting my cousin and his wife so we thought they were there already. The waitress said go ahead and check further in too see, but they weren't so we told her for 4ppl and she told us to take a table at the back which was located by their service station. She immediately gave us menus and then brought us tea. Once my cousin arrived and we figured out what we wanted she took our order. Gave us our additional 2 place settings as there were only 2 there at first. The 1st thing to arrive was my beef Brisket and vegetable noodles soup(I opted for flat rice noodle) their isn't any option for different noodles listed but most hk style cafes you can get the option of noodles your want. Ex) rice vermicelli thick or thin, flat rice noodle, etc.. The Brisket was very tender and had good flavor. I've been to many hk cafes and some places the Brisket isn't tender or you don't actually even get proper Brisket. The flat noodles were heated just right and soup broth with the Brisket sauce was flavourful. Second to arrive was wife's meal combo, she got cream soup first and then her set meal which she chose to get fish filet and chicken wings with fries and onion gravy. Third was the house special chow mein which had sliced chicken, fish, shrimp, mushroom, squid, imitation crab and bok choi. Very decent flavor crispy noodle with enough sauce in the middle for the saucy part. I think the imitation crab isn't needed probably just add a couple more fish slice or mushroom would be better. Overall decent flavour and wonderful mouth feel with the crunchy and saucy noodle. Each order came with your choice of drink listed on menu. I got two hk style coffee/tea, wifey got a milk tea. Definitely a solid hk cafe with all the menu items needed to be successful. Taste of all the food was solid, no particular superstars but just decent solid known cantonese style flavors. Tried Song cafe since it changed from iCafe. The inside looked fresh and the food was way better than iCafe! Albeit a bit pricey, each dish comes with a soup (not pictured - I got borscht), and a hot drink (or add $2 for a large iced drink). The borscht was hearty and not too salty. I also enjoyed the baked Portuguese chicken rice as it wasn't too sweet or creamy like other places. It had a good mix of curry and coconut sauce. The chicken was also very tender. The hot Lemon tea was good but nothing extraordinary from your typical hk cafe. Staff was friendly and helpful. Overall I would come again, as it's a tasty hk cafe and close by too! read more

so this is the old iCafe under new ownership, still operating as a HK cafe. I came on a weekday for dinner time. Place was NOT busy. My party of 2 ordered 2 dishes: beef rice noodle soup baked rice with chicken and tomato each dish was around $20, and each comes with a soup on the side and a hot drink. You can add a bit of $ for certain other drink options, as usual with HK cafe type places. Soup choices were the usual HK "borscht" which is basically a tomato-based vegetable soup, or some kind of creamy soup. We both chose the borscht which was fine, tasted light, and hot ovaltine, also fine. The food IMO was solid. Doesnt blow you away, but kind of exactly what you'd expect. The only difference from other HK cafe places is it tasted less salty, less MSG-laden, and you could even call it a bit bland. I actually prefer this, and did not feel super thirsty afterwards like I often do after a HK cafe meal. I liked it, and the food is easy 4/5. Some people might call this less flavorful, but it just felt healthier (or maybe, less unhealthy...). Again, this is a HK cafe, meant for a quick meal. this isnt fine dining. The place itself has been renovated. New furniture, floors, even the bathrooms were re-done to some degree. Very clean, pleasant place to have a quick bite. The city view being on the 2nd level is a nice perk. Service was good. The staff were friendly and quick. For a place like this, its perfect. As many people have mentioned though, the parking situation is atrocious. We completely lucked out as there was an open free street spot directly across their main entrance (only free after 6pm). But otherwise, you have to go further south on Heather, near VGH for street metered parking, or find a private pay lot somewhere. I can imagine this being a problem during peak hours. There arent many HK cafe type places in this area, so if im around here and had a craving, would happily go back provided I can find parking. Pricing is maybe a tad higher than their competition elsewhere, but this is west broadway, so its expected and i dont mind. The extra cost is well worth it to save a long drive elswhere if you're in the area. If im not in the area though, this place is not worth going out of my way to eat at. IMO they deserve a solid 3.5 stars, but you cant choose half stars here and they are better than 3. read more

My second visit to Song Cafe in a week! Returned to try the lunch special - Chicken Curry Chop Rice. ($19.95CDN) The first bite of the thick curry sauce took me back decades to the legendary Green Door, the back alley cafe in Vancouver's Chinatown. So many great meals with good friends many years ago. Fragrant and tasty, today's curry is thick with onions, potatoes and carrots. The tender chicken is sliced for easy eating with chopsticks or spoon and fork. Rice on the side. I love this old style, to me, Chinese curry. The Hong Kong style tea with milk was delicious. Last visit I had the almond tea. Today, every table was filled with happy diners over the lunch break. Please drop in to Song Cafe. Wonderful friendly service, owner Gloria on the floor over the lunch service. I plan to eat my way through the menu! Sit at the window- the North Shore mountains are resplendent in the mid day sun! Located at Heather and West Broadway, above the cannabis store. Enter on Heather Street, go upstairs past the three blue globes, and enter for a great food experience. Song? A new hit or just a one hit wonder? Saw a posted about iCafe being replaced by this new Hong Kong cafe. It got me intrigued because the last time I been to iCafe was probably a decade ago and needed to find a replacement for Honolulu Hong Kong cafe after papa and mama closed its doors after decades in business, wish them a happy and much deserved retirement. The restaurant is located on the second floor and it seems like the outside signage isn't fully done yet cause still able to see the iCafe imprints. Inside is newly renovated with booth seats situated all along the sides of the windows and tables along the middle. I would say quite a spacious layout creating a relaxing and comfortable dining environment overlooking the busy street below. Here were the food I ordered; 1. Lobster bisque baked with puff pastry. The puff pastry was nicely baked, the bisque was hot and it came with 2 slices of toasted bread with butter. However the little amount of minced shrimps in the bisque ruined the bisque taste a bit. I really wish restaurants would stop using shrimps especially frozen shrimps for lobster bisque cause the noticeably taste of them do not go well and it's a bad hack. 2. Hong Kong style borscht soup. Taste wise, a little light. 3. Hong Kong milk tea (hot). I personally find Honolulu cafe's from before a bit better. 4. Grilled platter 2 items (chicken steak & sausages) with spaghetti, daily soup, hot drink. The chicken steak was nicely seasoned and grilled. The sausages were juicy and spaghetti wasn't over cooked so that was good. The Hong Kong style borscht soup was a bit on the lighter side. 5. Grilled platter 3 items (grilled pork chop, sausages, Atlantic salmon filet add extra $5) with steamed rice, borscht soup and hot drink. The grilled pork chop was tender and wasn't dry, the sausages were juicy, and the salmon was nicely seasoned and cooked to perfection. Honestly, the grilled salmon was moist and juicy right to the center. I haven't had such a perfectly cooked salmon in a long time regardless of low end or high end or whatever cuisines I been to in the last couple of years. And it was a very generous portion, however, I wish it was served in a hot iron skillet or plate. Usually those extra $ add ons I am not a fan of but the $5 extra was well worth it. Overall, the restaurant is freshly renovated therefore it offers a comfortable dining experience. Plus it being on the second floor, it gives a nice little view of outside and the surrounding area when sitting on the booths by the windows. The only downside is the parking; there are parkings on the side streets and all but with the endless constructions in the West Broadway area, parking can be a bit challenging and most areas are $6/hr. The menu has quite a sizeable selection like most Hong Kong cafes. As for the food, there certainly is room for some adjustments and improvements, but overall so far decently okay. I will return to try out a few more different dishes. As for the service, the servers were quite friendly but missing the finishing touch of thanking and saying good bye or please come again. Maybe it's a traditional Chinese thing, don't show much love and affections in public. Lol I would repeat to see if it's going to be a big hit or just dwindled away. To be fair, 3 stars. read more
