I went through drive-thru at 2p today after work, unprofessional young man taking orders over mic. When I made it to the window I asked a question and was answered with "yeah". I really wish jobs would not conform to these young people and would require old fashion values of being professional no matter what job you hold. I wish I could rate my service as a minus 5! Their service sucks!!! We were in the drive thru, waiting to place our order - no one EVER came online. Two skating food servers and one guy with head gear were hanging out with a group of young men, chatting it up! There was a long line behind us. We asked what was going on and were ignored - twice. We drove up to the window. A young lady with long braids was standing there, on her phone and completely ignored us! This was a complete waste of about 15 minutes in total. I've been here about 2 or 3 times and they are pretty good. I usually get a cheeseburger and fries just keep it simple but their milkshakes are really good. I can't remember the name of it but it had brownie bits, cookie dough, and peanut butter cups in it and it was amazingly amazing lol. I did try their boneless wings and they were ok but I'll stick to wingstop for wings. But overall they are pretty good. i like the idea behind sonics. unfortunately, the food here isnt that good. i ordered the crispy chicken sandwich and i complained the entire time about how i wish there was more mayo on it. granted they did put mayo in my sandwich, but could they have spread it out any thinner? it was almost non-existent. i kept putting ranch dressing on my burger in hope of getting some sort of a binding medium on my sandwich. tator tots were normal. and the popcorn chicken made me realize that white people popcorn chicken were no comparison in deliciousness to the taiwanese style popcorn chicken. taiwanese style is way way better! oh, and i saw on the food network that they are supposed to roller skate/blade the food to your car. i dont care about the fact that it was raining super hard when i went, i still wanted the full sonic experience. read more

I had such a bad experience with the manager MARIO. He was very rude and disrespectful and didn't seem to care about my issue. He left me hanging in the middle of our conversation and verbally disrespected me. I also heard him raise his voice very LOUD at his employees and I don't think they should be treated that way. I work retail and since I get out late some late night food always sounds good to me and sonic just about 90% of the time always hits the spot (the other 10% is for if I'm feeling up to spending money for food lol) their popcorn chicken is amazing tho. Eh. We always regret making the drive to Sonic. This time we were tempted by the new bacon cheddar pretzel dog. And again disappointed. No where near as scrumptious as the pictures. I know, I know, fast food never looks as good as the commercials but it was totally different: small dog, little bacon, and little cheese. Fries were blah. My son even complained about the French toast sticks and wouldn't finish them. Service was good and the shakes are delicious. I think from now on this will be a dessert destination only. read more

So, we have been going here off and on for a few years. When it first opened, the food was OK, but we really went for the Ice Cream dessert selection. The Blasts were our Faves!! Fast forward to this last year or so... the food is basically warm garbage and for the last 4 times we attempted to go for dessert, the Ice Cream machine was down! Mind you, we drive about 14 miles round trip, because the Blasts were that good, not the food. Rarely were there signs, or warnings that the BEST part of this locations service was unavailable, so you'd have to wait in their long/slow line, just to find out what you wanted was not available.. SO ANNOYING! The only thing I would have asked is for some kind of LARGE sign letting people know the Ice Cream was unavailable, or the machine was permanently broken! Maybe they don't do that in hopes that after driving all the way there, and waiting to be served only to find out what you wanted is not available, you might actually buy some of the crap they try to pass off as food! I usually don't like to review places if it's bad, unless I feel like it really needs to be put out there, because, hey, things may just be bad that one time... Amuses me to read the Yelpers melting down over how disappointed they are that Sonic doesn't measure up to their misguidedly elevated expectations. Yes, you can't turn two channels in any direction without seeing a Sonic ad, but is the frequency of commercial plays the true predictor of a quality dining experience? Sonic is a novelty to the Bay Area (with the Hayward location only the third in the Bay Area, joining Gilroy and Napa/American Canyon). But, in other parts of the country, Sonic is almost as frequent a sight as McD's and Burger King, and should be evaluated in that context. What sets Sonic apart are its extensive drink and dessert menu, and its carhop service/drive-in layout. If you expect something special about the food, that says more about how you set your expectations than anything about Sonic itself. In general, Sonic's food is no better or worse than your run-of-the-mill fast food chain fare. It's nice that they serve breakfast anytime, and the tots are a very good change of pace. Their burgers taste okay, nothing special. And the Coney hot dogs are your basic Oscar Mayer fare topped with some canned chili. For the most part, no harm no foul. As mentioned, the carhop service is Sonic's signature feature. There's something decadent about having an entire restaurant setup around eating in your car. This is not your utilitarian drive-thru that's all getting your food and staying on the go. No, a drive-IN is about incorporating the car as the centerpiece of the dining experience itself. These types of places used to dot the Cali landscape until the real estate got too expensive. Those of us old enough to remember have fond memories of the old A&W drive-ins and other similar eateries, and Sonic is the modern incarnation of that concept. It's novel to some, and nostalgic to others. That's why Sonic has done well in most markets. At a more practical level, this is a great place to go if you have a toddler. They have a pretty good kids menu with some healthy sides (apple slices or banana, and lots of different drink choices). And dining in the car means that you don't have to constantly chase after them in a crowded dining room, or worry about screaming kids (mine in particular). The other half of what differentiates Sonic from other places is its drink menu. Fruit slushes, floats, flavored drinks and iced teas, and now iced coffee drinks make up one of the more varied beverage selections (non-alcoholic) you'll find in any fast food place. Add the half-price special from 2-4pm, and there's your reason to visit Sonic. As for the Hayward location itself, I went there about a week ago and they still have some growing pains to iron out. First off, the drive-thru layout is very ill equipped to handle to crowds they still attract, especially since they cone off the car stalls after 10pm. Most of the other Sonics I've visited are open much later and keep the carhop service going until very close to the closing time. This keeps the lines at the drive-thru line from getting outrageously long. The food itself is on par with other Sonic locations, but they still don't seem to know all of the variations and options on the menu. I suspect that things will settle down once all the curiosity and novelty wanes. At some point, I would hope that they extend their hours in line with other Sonic location, or at least keep the carhop stalls open longer than they currently do. Sonic is basic fast food with carhops and a great drink menu. That's what you get, and that's what you should expect. For car-oriented fast food, I like Rally's a lot more, though they lack Sonic's carhop service and drink menu. They've also yet to open a Bay Area location, and they tend to fly more under the radar than Sonic because they don't do TV ads. But, they serve a similar menu and do better food. read more

I went here at the request of my son. Was eager to try it since it is the only one around the bay area and it sounded good. I consider myself a foodie so I'm always looking for something new to add to my food belt. Although the concept was fun and appealing the food was horrible. I dont think I have ever tasted a burger so dry and tasteless in all my life. No indoor seating so if you go with small children plan on having a mess in your car. They messed up on my order but that wasn't as big a deal as the food tasting like puppy chow. The watermelon slushy was good but the this place doesn't even beat McDonald's and I don't even like McD's. Would never go back unless it was for a slushy. my husband and i were trying to figure out how to quench our thirsts and he said hey theres a pretty new sonic near my house... well since we came to sonics just to quench our thirsts... i had ordered a route 44 sweet tea with peach flavoring which was mediocre...and my husband had ordered a sweet tea with lemon...usually when someone says with lemon they usually put a slice of lemon with a nice muted taste of lemon...but instead they had put lemon flavoring and omg his tea was far from delicious and thats being nice... i really don't know why people make such a big fuss over sonics...its all hype and not too much taste...sorry i am NOT a lover of sonics. read more
