After several visits, I still can't decide if I actually LIKE the food, or if it's merely a novelty that's wearing off... While I do enjoy some of their burgers (bacon cheeseburger toaster is delish!) and their ice cream/slush selection is faboo, I just can't get over the bland flavor and tiny sizes of the french fries. Additionally, in my experiences, their consistency has been all over the place, sometimes being hot & fresh, other times being cold and, well, not so fresh. I still think I enjoy the food more than the novelty of the restaurant, but when you have to ask yourself that question, it's never a good sign. I hate to provide a 2 star rating I really do... I grew up in Connecticut as anyone who's read any of my other reviews might have figured out by now... and in CT there isn't much of anything. We are completely devoid of any sort of indigenous food culture where as MA has roast beef/pizza houses and NJ has pizza parlors and something amazing called a pork roll, we'll save that for a later review... So a few years ago we started seeing commercials in central CT for Sonic however none appeared to exist... much to our dismay (and the first one ended up in the Orange area of the state so I never got the chance to try it.) Upon moving to the North Shore I was happily surprised to find out that there was in fact a Sonic on Rt. 1 so last winter I asked my girlfriend if we could go there so I could try it (after all the hype and mystique I figured I owed it to myself.) Needless to say it did not live up to my expecations and maybe that has something to do with my great affinity for Five Guys but, being that this restaurant is derived from the days of yore with car-hops and such I thought well it can't be that bad! But the food was less than memorable and really sat quite heavily in my stomach. As is my custom I ate there again a few months later and again was less than enthused with the place. For the price and where/how it sits on Rt. 1 I'd rather drive down further and get some Five Guys and wait the extra few minutes it takes. I'm sure that other people on here will not approve of what I have to say but as we all know my opinion is my perspective and yours is yours and as long as we agree to disagree and keep an open mind that's what keeps the world spinning. Hopefully though they can find a way to improve the speed and quality of the food that they serve... Well, like everyone else, I was following the news of the new Sonic all summer with a passion. Could not find an open date anywhere though. My boyfriend and I were driving up to DQ, being emo about not knowing when Sonic would open. Then we saw a line. As we drove up, we realized. It was open. We didn't go that day, we went the next night (the Sat. after it opened.) Waited in line for 2 hours and 15 minutes. At first, we were annoyed that people were just sitting in there cars at the drive in eating. I know that's the whole point, but when you have a 2-3 hour line, there should be a time limit. As we drove in to the parking lot, we were cheered by waitstaff, the people directing us, and the people sitting around eating. It was exciting. We decided to be one of those annoying people and eat our food in the car, just that first time. I forget what my boyfriend got (#2 combo maybe?). I got the Bacon Cheeseburger Toaster with fries and a drink. We also split an onion ring. The burger was great, but I forgot to ask for it without onions (for some reason, I love onion rings but hate raw onions..go fig.) so until I realized there were onions in it, I wasn't really enjoying it. Once I took them out, it was heaven. The fries were okay, could have used salt. The onion rings were sweet and delicious, and equally so a few days later after being in the fridge and microwaved. I want to go again and try more stuff, the menu looked amazing. I really want one of the limeades. Hopefully the lines will cease, but I doubt they will until more are built. Just don't go overboard Sonic and go the way of Krispy Kreme. That would suck. read more

If you don't know what Sonic is, it's a drive-in fast food chain, where your server/cashier comes to you in roller-skates. I don't know why people would want to soil their cars by eating greasy foods, but that's just me. You can also eat outside on a bench. Sonic had commercials in MA months before the only Sonic (this one) opened. This place is packed. You're going to have to wait for half an hour or more in your car, unless you show up during a time when people don't usually eat (3 o'clock in the afternoon). The line will get backed up onto Route 1 North. You can choose to either wait in the patio/stall line (where you drive up to the menu, the way Sonic is supposed to be experienced), or go through the drive-thru. Either way, be prepared to wait a long time. There's a cop that hangs around as well. The employees at Sonic are teenagers who seem to relish the fact that there are many hungry patrons who are willing to wait for long periods of time in their cars. Think of the RMV department, except the people here are willing to wait. The traffic gets so congested, since the people that go through the drive-thru don't really leave the parking lot, and the people that eat at the stalls take a long time to finish. I saw a few cars in the stalls have a tailgate party, it's like Sonic is the new chill out spot for teens. This would be OK except there's a line of cars/people waiting to eat and these kids are just taking up space shooting the crap with each other. I thought it was strange how the some of the staff would walk/roller-skate their way into the hotel nearby. I like the wide selection of foods on the menu, including chili-dogs, chili-cheese tater tots (it's like you're back in elementary school again), milkshakes, fruity drinks, etc. Sonic has a few things that other fast food chains don't offer. Before you get excited, it really is just another fast food place. I don't know why people get all excited about Sonic, it's more or less just another McDonald's. Overall, the food tastes rather bland, and is high in calories (a given). It's really hard to hear what the order-taker is saying over the intercom when music, car engines, and other chatter are going on all at the same time. Also, the $5 you spend on a burger end up being mostly bread, the beef patty was very thin. If it wasn't for the long wait, I'd give this place 3 stars for being OK. Someone joked that she can walk to the nearby Wendy's, order and finish a meal, walk back, and we'd still be in line waiting. And she would be 100% correct. read more

oh come on people. Yeah the lines are awful but it is the first in New England!! In a month or two it will be fine. I have been 3 times since it opened and it is wonderful. The drinks are definitely the highlight of Sonic but the tots are delicious as well. I have been to Sonic's in both Delaware and Pennsylvania before this MA one and I did actually have a more enjoyable time at those but only because they had been open for awhile and were in the middle of nowhere and we could sit and rock out to michael jackson (this was right after he died and we had to pay our respects) while we ate our tots and drank our ocean water. Like everyone else in the Northeast, I've been teased by the commercials for cherry limeades and the happy hour deals of Sonic for years now. Also I've been frantically searching the Sonic website to find out how i can either franchise a location up here or (more realistically) find out when one is coming. Since the opening, I have waited to spring on my Sonic prey at the right moment taking into consideration the fact that I dont have a car in the city. So when a friend asked if I wanted to go, I didn't eat the entire day so that I would be starving by the time we went. I think that was the best choice. The first time I went I go the jalapeno burger with mozzerella sticks and a cherry limeade. The burger was delicious and everything I hoped for. It was actually SO much bigger than I imagined and dreamed that I was EXTREMELY surprised. The mozzerella sticks were not the best I've ever had and a little cold but they were still delicious. And washing all of the amazing food down with a limeade made everything mix so well. I was so glad that it was alittle bit of a trip back home because I could not move at all because I was stuffed to the max. read more

Been here for my first time ever and enjoyed it! Value cheeseburger was offered at a very low price of 1.50 ish. It wasn't the best burger but it was delicious. The Oreo Shake was bomb too! Had a pacific slushie which was nice and sweet. Also tried an ocean water which tastes like a mix of sprite and coconut? I got a slushy with nerds which was good (what I expected a slushy with nerds would be) and then a milkshake the second time which was also really good. WOW I just had a great experience sitting in one of the booths. Time was a wait since the line was out on route 1 I would say 45 minutes for the booth, and about 30 minutes for drive through and go. The menus was wide open, breakfast and dinner transcended my palette. I purchased bacon burger on Texas toast meal medium with tater-tots, with vanilla shake instead of a soft drink. With a steak and cheese breakfast burrito.....with a sample of popcorn chicken very good, and jalapeño poppers also good. The adventure consisted of three travelers meal was about $10 dollars per person with all satisfied. The waitresses for the booths wore roller skates and brought out our meal....for fast food it wasn't, however it is on a major route. But I enjoyed the experience greatly and highly recommend it to anyone. read more

Its the little things. I go to Sonic quite often. I love their desserts! But I never thought to review them. Today's experience was so pleasant I figured I might as well. I ordered a few dishes of ice cream over the intercom to a very friendly and clear voice on the other side. I pulled up to the window and the employee smiled and asked if I'd like to add anything to my sundae, first off they have never asked me this simple question in the hundreds of times I've been there, so I said sure, surprise me. She brought back a few mouth watering, beautiful and giant sundaes! I was extremely happy and very impressed. The attitude, helpfulness, professionalism of the employee was exceptional, not to mention the product was A+ in quality, quantity, presentation and price. Sonic just can't be beat! This place is nothing if not consistent. Service is consistently slow. Orders are consistently incorrect. No matter how many times they change management they can't figure out how to get an order of tater tots out to your car in less than 30 minutes. Ordering more than one item? Terrible. We drove over 40 miles to visit a Sonic. We are sitting at the Peabody, MA Sonic. We waited over 10 minutes for someone to respond at all. When he finally did respond he said we either need to use the drive-thru or come inside to place our order or it's going to be a while. We told him we want to place our order here and he just stopped responding. We pressed the button again and still nothing. To the right of us we could her3 someone placed their order no problem and to the left someone was getting their food brought to their car. this is just based on a first visit for a snack... I got confused a bit when driving in as to how things worked between the "stalls" and "patio" but did manage to park, order and get served in under half an hour which is pretty quick from what I've been hearing. I shouldn't give away ways to "beat the system" but that's probably the way to go. Avoid the drive-thru. I never understand why people queue up at, say, a Dunks in the drive-thru when you can walk in and order and be out well before you'd get through the other line I got a lemon/berry slush and medium tater tot. The slush was awesome. A medium was more than generous. The tots were OK, not amazing, not awful. I could have eaten on the patio but chose to take it 'to go' since I have a short drive home. But the tots didn't survive the drive home. I guess I liked 'em. I don't mind the lack of an indoor space. Heck, when I was a kid, McDonald's didn't have that. You'd eat in the car. Just be careful! :-) One cool thing is it was "happy hour" (2-4 pm) and the drinks are half price so my check was a bit under $3. I'll go again but be conscious of when I go there and if it looks too much like a zoo, I'll probably go back another time. read more

I did have a bad experience twice there...first time when they first opened and the cop turned us away after a long drive. Second time the cup leaked, they sent us a coupon though for free food. Don't believe the hype I would normally say to start this review, but I think the novelty has worn off from this Sonic, and now it's just another option in the fast food world. That being said, I really enjoy Sonic's burgers, so there's a good option, and their drinks are phenomenal, which is really what sets them apart. The tater tots are kind of stupid, as they are EXACTLY the same thing you can buy in the supermarket, and the fries aren't very good, so their lacking on the "side dish" area. The drive-up is a cool feature if that's your thing. For me, not so much, I just wanna get my food and retreat to my lair. Due to some wonky set up in the parking lot, you can't see the menu at all while your driving up, so your quickly stumbling to put together the best meal for yourself while people are likely waiting behind you. So, I would suggest checking out the menu before you go, so you get something good. By the way, these guys will put Chili on ANYTHING, which is epic in my book. I love milkshakes from Sonic, but my last visit there was TERRIBLE. They made my chicken wrap with crispy chicken not the grilled that I ordered. They also forgot my son's $7 meal all together. When I called and told them, nobody answered the phone the first time. The second time I tried calling, I gave them the receipt number, the person said he'd take care of it without even asking what was missing and there is no change to my credit card. I make a point of stopping at Sonic whenever I drive into Boston. Wish there was one closer to Haverhill! Love their strawberry milkshake and the cheesy chili dogs..and their delightfully crunchy onion rings . not a healthy meal but just plain yummy. I have stopped here many times and never had a problem with the food or service. Bathrooms are clean. Only complaint that I have is that the straws are too narrow for the chunks of strawberries in the strawberry shake. They will provide a long handled straw UPON REQUEST, but I recently bought a very wide stainless steel straw, and just keep that in the car now. read more

What a disaster! I had to use the restroom but it was locked, I waited outside the door for a few minutes, and out came an employee. I didn't hear the sink after the toilet was flushed. Gross! I grew up in Texas where Sonic is an institution, so i was very hsppy to learn there was one closeby. I first sat at the drive in with the blinker blinking for close to 20 minutes and finally I went inside to order but there was nobody at the counter. There were four cars total in the drive in slots so it isnt like they were crazy busy. I stood there for 5 minutes waiting for someone to come out but nobody ever did. At this point I should have just given up and left but I wanted chili cheese tater tots, dammit! So I pull up to the drive thru (one car ahead of me) and order. When I pull up I can see FIVE people in the kitchen, THREE of whom are doing absolutely nothing as far as I can see. The girl who came to give me my order LITERALLY opened the window and thrust the bag out towards me without a word. When I said, "thank you" she grunted (yes, grunted) "uh-huh." And to top it off they put my chili cheese tater tots in standing upright instead of flat so by the time I got home they were a massive blob at the bottom of the paper tray. I'm guessing the owner doesnt come around much or doesn't care because how do you not know these are the employees you have and how they are treating the people coming to spend their money at your franchise? I'm originally from Oklahoma, so of course I was raised on sonic and love it. I was so excited to learn that sonic was coming to my new home...Boston. The food and drinks were still good, but they hiked up the prices...did anyone else notice that?! I also expected to see a lot more carports...I think this one was built more around the drive-thru, none of the sonics back home have drive-thrus, so that was a bit of a shock. But I guess that's good for new England winters. And they're on skates...even the original one doesn't have that, haha. Sonic is my new addiction (I live dangerously close). Sure, it's not great, but it's new and different and exciting. And the servers are on roller skates! (I hope they have a huuuge accident insurance policy). I have been here twice in the first two days it opened, and I find that its the first thing i think about when i wake up in the morning. I can tell this is problematic and i will have to start limiting myself before i blow up like a beach ball. The line for the drive-in moves pretty quickly, much faster than the walk-up line. Haven't tried the drive-thru yet. Limeades are great; try the cherry or the cranberry. I thought the apple was just ok and kind of weak. Corn dog - OMFG best corndog ever! $1.50? I'll take 5. They are on the smaller side but soooo delicious and crisp. Chili cheese coney - good, a little too soft. Wish the bun was toasted or grilled. But it is large and pretty satisfying. Bacon cheeseburger toaster - tasty. The burger patties are thin, and the cheese is not melted as advertised, but good nonetheless. It's actually way better if you take it home and pop it in the toaster oven yourself, as the Texas toast is less than crisp straight out of the bag. The fries are soft and totally suck. Get the TOTS! (with chili cheese please) Onion rings - good "Chedd'r Peppers" - good Hmm... what else... Oh yeah, skip the iced latte, that shit tastes like water. Get a Java Chiller, ok so it's over 500 calories and is more ice cream than coffee... but its amazing. Get one. Skip the plain burgers. Totally mediocre. This review is from an experience I had on Thanksgiving Eve 2018. I placed an online order for a drive up pick up. I checked in and the runner brought the food out. Since it was so cold out, I drove back home and then realized they did not include the onion rings I ordered. I called the location, no answer. I reached out through the survey and the manager Scott emailed me "I'm sorry that you didn't receive the o rings, I can replace them on your next visit." I replied I wanted a refund since I didnt know when I would be returning. No response. I emailed again my disappointment, no response. I reached out to corporate again, no response. If I cant get an email or a person on the phone, how would they replace the "o rings"?
