It goes without saying that when you go to somewhere new to Hawaii that you need to expect long lines and not so great food because of the rush. With that said, having waited in a long drive thru line, I received great service even with the long wait. The staff were friendly and got me my order correct. TL;DR: Nearly 2 months since they opened, made three visits, and on each visit, they always got our order wrong. Opening day was exciting! Waited five hours in line, got two poker chips that offered us free drinks, and two free drawstring backpacks just as a way for them to thank us for waiting. On our first day there, we were given someone else's order, and they insisted that it was ours, even though we knew what we ordered. They finally checked the receipt and discovered that they gave us someone else's order. Once we got our order, we thought that we had everything, but we were missing a menu item. But since we waited so long, we decided, better luck next time. And of course, this was launch day, so mistakes are bound to happen. Went there for the second time, and they had forgotten our two shakes and a fountain drink. We ended up staying in the line and waited for someone to come back to serve the order of the vehicle behind us, to finally let them know that they had forgotten our three menu items. Then today was another fail. Although the lines were much shorter today, when we checked our order, everything was correct except for missing one particular item. After receiving the item, we thought that everything was fine. When we got home and checked our sandwiches, we found out that although they repeated our order back as stated on the receipt, one of our sandwiches was a double and not the triple that we ordered. I can understand the busyness of the launch of the new location. Still, the frequent mistakes we've experienced so far make us question how many other people in line are also getting their orders wrong and are now staying in line longer because their orders are messed up the first time. Not really a great impression for the Oahu location. I can understand the need to be "sonic" but if speed comes at the cost of accuracy, if we had to provide a net promoter score based on the service, it would probably be close to a 1 or 2. Chili hotdog was served cold so I threw that away and kids meals were bland. I came when it wasn't busy as well. First time trying sonic now I know why the line was soooo long. Got one entrance for the drive-thru and the car hop. So if u decide to eat at the car hop then u have to wait for a car to finish before the next one can go. They need to fix that. Other than that the service was good. We waited in the drive thru for about 50 minutes for our food. Which was expected but this was one of those interesting experiences I haven't had yet I need to write about. Also come from Kapolei Parkway going towards the high school cuz anybody who came from the back road opening across from the housing had to do a u-turn or drive all the way around to go at the end of the line. The u-turn is also partial blocked, so cars have to go on the median & a little on the dirt to u-turn. My boyfriend & I had a hard time ordering because of the worker we had. I don't know if she was new but she couldn't hear us order & we had to repeat ourselves several times. My boyfriend was getting pissed & we were right next to the speaker. A few times she had to ask another worker about certain items cuz we could hear another person talking in the background. They also DON'T HAVE the Wacky Pack Kids Meals at Kapolei location, so if u have a picky child like we were trying to order for, u would have to buy one of the regular items & take toppings off yourself. We tried ordering a plain hot dog but the worker wouldn't let us remove the toppings or put them on the side. As we got closer to the drive thru window, another worker came out with the pay device & literally asked us if we remember our total. We guessed & he walked away. We started laughing & stared thinking they didn't ask us for a name or probably took down any information (color, license plate, type/model) about which car we we are in like how other fast food drive the us do. So we waited 10 minutes just for them to find our order by the way we were only two cars away from the window when they asked this. When we got to the window 3 workers were looking at receipts & we know they were talking about us cuz they kept like side eyeing or glancing at us. Another worker came out with our bags of food & repeated our prefer & we paid. Then she went back inside for our drinks. My boyfriend and I were just over with the service we got & just wanted our food. The food tasted bland & dry. I thought the portions would be bigger or at least fill the container as u can see in the picture of the tater tots. The burgers had no sauce & the bread was dry or stale we couldn't tell. The chili cheese hot dog was good but same dry bread & it's the skinny hot dog they use. The strawberry shake tasted like a normal shake but no savory after taste with strawberry chucks at the bottom. There was just too much whip cream in the shake & had more of a smoothie texture than a shake. We will not be returning to this location unless the service & especially the food quality improves. Sonic Drive Inn. One of America's favorite fast food restaurants has built it's second location in Hawaii. They had opened a restaurant in Maui previously, but I didn't want to fly over to Maui just for that. Thankfully, Sonic Drive Inn expanded another store in their Hawaii portfolio. This time in Kapolei. I saw their grand opening on social media and decided to give it a try. On the second day of opening, I decided to travel to Kapolei to check out the scene. I arrived here around noon and it was fairly crazy. The drive thru line snaked about 4 blocks long. I got into the line and I waited maybe 30 minutes before making it to the front of the line. From there, it was like waiting for an available teller in a bank. There is 4 available ordering stations where you'd press a button and someone is available to take your order. You'd probably should get your order ready soon, since there's a line already waiting for you to hurry up. I basically purchased a burger meal with large fries and a cherry limeade. Sonic is known for their limeades and other drinks. Limeades are basically flavored versions of Sprite soda. Still a nifty concoction though. It took me 1 1/2 hours on the bus from town. Was it worth the trip? Absolutely. But maybe, once a month would be good for me. I'm glad I don't live in the area since I'd be here all the time lol. It's nice that they're here though. The overall experience here at this Sonic Drive Inn in Kapolei, HI was reasonably good. Considering that there was a considerable amount of time to wait in line, the line went kind of fast and we got to sit down in a chair after we ordered. It probably took around 10 minutes for the order to be processed after putting it in. Sonic is known for their servers to be on roller skates, so if you apply to work here, you gotta be really good maneuvering and carrying orders to awaiting customers. For the most part though, the experience here at this Sonic Drive Inn was fairly good and smooth. While the waiting to order things was such a bummer, only time will tell when the lines will get worse or better. The service was good and friendly. Once I received my order, I ended up walking out of Sonic and 2 blocks along Kapolei Parkway and observing the long car line to approach the drive thru window. Even some people asked me how long was the walk up line and I told them 30 minutes and they said they've been waiting for 3-4 hours in the car. Thought that was pretty nuts. But that's how crazy it can be when new restaurants come into town. Or Kapolei. This Sonic Drive Inn restaurant is located in Kapolei, Hawaii. It's physically located across the Raising Caines restaurant on Kapolei Parkway. It's kind of away from the Ka Makana Ali'I shopping center, but I guess its cheaper to build outside any shopping mall area in Hawaii. They accept major credit cards at its kiosks / ordering stations. The only odd thing that Sonic is known for is their drive thru format. They don't have a sit down inside dining area for diners to enjoy their meal. While their success is fueled through what they currently are doing, maybe they could improve their bottom line by having a inside dining area experience. As far as parking is concerned, there is limited parking around the restaurant. Best bet would be to find street parking nearby and walk on over. Or even get dropped off. If you are like me, take the rail into Kapolei and take any bus route that travels along Kapolei Parkway. I took Country route "C" from Ala Moana to get here. If that fails, you can always call Uber or Lyft to get you here for your limeade. The burger and fries were good and I always love crinkle cut fries. My experience here was top notch. The service was friendly and attentive, which I honestly didn't expect seeing as how busy it's been and it being fast food (high pressure and rude customers wear workers down), but it was upbeat, they had local music playing outside, tents for shade, picnic tables, just chill vibes. I liked it! We parked down the street and walked up, no wait, ordered right away and relaxed until the food came. They offered us all the sauces, tried some new ones, we hung out and ate, the food was great actually (coming from someone very familiar with Sonics in the mainland). 1 Star - Extremely Disappointing Experience at Sonic Kapolei I was really excited to finally try the Sonic in Kapolei, especially their new smash burger. Unfortunately, that excitement did not last very long. I pulled into stall #4 and placed my order for a smash burger, fries, onion rings, a medium Sprite with light ice, and extra ketchup. Shortly afterward, other vehicles arrived in stalls #1, #2, and #3. After waiting 20 minutes, I noticed the customers who arrived after me were already receiving their orders. I got out of my car and asked one of the servers what had happened to my order. She told me that my order had accidentally been given to another customer and said she would have it remade. About 10 minutes later, my order finally arrived--but it was missing the fries, onion rings, and extra ketchup. I only received the burger and my Sprite. The manager came out, apologized, and gave me a side order of chicken nuggets. I appreciated the apology, but unfortunately, the food itself was extremely disappointing. The burger was cold and dry, with what tasted like cheap/fake cheese. The fries were greasy and extremely salty, and the onion rings were not enjoyable. My medium Sprite was basically all ice, despite requesting light ice. Even the chicken nuggets were super dry. After all the excitement about finally having a Sonic in Kapolei and getting to try their smash burger, this experience was a complete letdown. One star. There was an employee standing at the drive way entrance & I stopped there thinking he would direct me where to go. IDK what's wrong with this place, either management does not know how to run a fast food joint or workers are lazy. There was only three us in the drive through. It took workers over 15 mins to get that the first order and another 5 mins for the second order which was simple drinks. As I pull up the two ladies just talking stories for about 5 mins and then workers start looking in the silver freezers and then they ask me what did I order. Then they go back to the same freezer that they looked in earlier to pull out my two drinks and then they took another 2 mins to add my toppings. Shaking my head. I've only been to Sonic when I was in Maui for a day-cation so I was excited when they opened one here. I waited a month just to give the workers time to adjust as well as wait for the line to die out. The food (especially the slushies) are amazing, but the 3 stars is for a specific worker. I did a walk up last week Friday right when they opened and it was super slow. As others have mentioned, the parking/drive thru is very confusing especially if you're not familiar with the area. We were one of the cars that were in the drive thru line but got told to go to the roller skating side even though drive thru was moving quicker. Anywho, I decided to jump out and just order up front while my driver parked in the neighborhood. I forget the worker's name, Chas-something, Char-something-- it started with a C though. She was so rude! When I tried making conversation, she just stared me down. Everytime I tried to order something, it's like she wasn't familiar with the menu. Lots of times saying "We don't have that. Oh wait, what did you say again?" in a very annoyed/monotone voice. It's like she couldn't wait to get rid of me and the others standing in line. I get it though. We all have our off days but it did kind of ruin the experience for me-- at least for Oahu's only location. A manager did come out and was very lively though so I appreciate her for that. All the hype surrounding the grand opening seems to have lead to a 2 hour wait (we were on foot) in the heat.... For Sonic?!? I never in my life thought I'd do something like that, but my family was pretty insistent. We had the Super Sonic Cheeseburger, chicken bites, a Smashburger, fries, tots, and two Melty drinks. Everything was new and nice with an energetic vibe. There was a little quiet bickering between staff members, but that's to be expected with all the chaos. The upper management was visible and made sure some of us had fold up chairs and water while we waited. I know the day was a colossal success for the location. If they take pride in it and employ polite staffers, this business will crush it in Kapolei. CORPORATE PLEASE NOTE!!!! 9/16/26 We live in town and are both retired so we decided to drive out to Kapolei and try Sonic for the first time. We had been anticipating this for quite some time and was really excited to finally go. Went before the noon rush and placed our order from a car port stall. The stall next to us also just had completed placing their orders. After a few minutes of waiting I checked my watch and it said 11:55. Then a group of soldiers came and placed their orders after us. Maybe about 10 minutes the next vehicle got their order. Then the soldiers started one by one to receive their orders. Then the screen displayed that Jason will be bringing out our food. I patiently waited a few more minutes and nothing so at 12:20 I pressed the red button to inform them and finally our order was brought out. We get our food and it was missing a teri smash burger so pressed the red button again and a manager came out due to not being able to hear me and saw it was incorrect and seeing it was cold offered to remake it fresh. Cool. Then at 12:35 we finally received the correct order. Then we are told by Jason that my credit card was not charged. I told them the pay lite turned green and showed my order was being prepared then that it was on the way with Jason. Why didnt they tell us that cc# payment was not received after we placed the order and waited until the last min to tell us. Jason asked us to show him our app to see if the payment was charged on our side. That is unacceptable to ask the customer for personal information. Then He went back to get another young female manager on dutycame out with a different manager where they both wanted to see my credit card app to see if a charge was pending but I told them my app is not always instant. Their caring customer service was non existent. Nothing was done to make me feel valued as a consumer. As a person of high integrity and a retired first responder I have never been so humilated and I was made to feel like a thief whereas I have been inside numerous homes and entrusted by the public where valuables were within reach without any incidence. I told them just keep your food. I hope the charge for food never went through and will have to wait a few days to see. What was once a day full of excitement and anticipation was nothing but a big let down and dissapointment. Will I ever try Sonic again? Perhaps not due to what happened here. I had a very disappointing experience at Sonic Drive-In. We waited in line for about 45 minutes and never received our food. During that time, the servers took orders but appeared to be standing around, playing around, and not paying attention to customers waiting for their orders. What made the situation even more frustrating was that we noticed other customers were being helped while we seemed completely invisible. Employees kept looking at the screen and appeared confused about orders, but nobody came to update us or explain what was happening. When we tried to address the issue, the supervisor simply walked away without offering any explanation or assistance. After waiting nearly an hour with no food, no communication, and no resolution, we decided to leave. We never received our order and ended up driving away extremely frustrated. There was one girl on roller blades the rest were on foot. Didn't really know what to get. They suggested Dr Pepper with cream and the brownie shake. Shakes are good. Tastes like what it says. The strawberry shortcake was my choice. It had crumbles and strawberry chunks in it. Very sweet tho. Smaller size will hit the spot just right. Dr Pepper cream is literally a cream soda. Sonic used to be my favorite fast-food place. Every time I went to the mainland I'd find a Sonic's and primarily have their Chicago dog. They discontinued that but I would still visit them for their hamburger and fries. Their Maui location was good also. The Kapolei location has to do much better if they don't want to lose more customers. Their hamburger bread was old, the burger patty wasn't good, and the fries were also bad. Good luck! read more

I gave 1 star only because it wouldn't let me give 0 stars. I arrived at 11:30pm and pulled in to the drive-up and park side to order. I was in stall #2. I pressed the red button and immediately was greeted by someone to take my order. I only ordered 1 item which was a Strawberry Slush; which is basically the only thing I usually go there for. After I ordered and payed I decided to check my phone and after a while I had noticed it was taking a VERY LONG TIME for just a drink. I decided to press the red button again even though that button is to start an order...hoping that I would speak to someone to find out what was taking so long. Long story short I finally got my drink at 12:01am. I waited for a while before I checked to see what the hold up was because they were quite busy and I didn't want to stress them out more than need be, but unfortunately I guess next time I will check in a lot sooner just to make sure they didn't forget about my order. 20 min for a drink is just TOO long and unacceptable. read more

First time visit to Sonic in Kapolei. We did a drive thru order. Staff we came in contact with were very polite. The location was nice and clean. We ordered an All American Double Sonic Smasher combo with onion rings and a chocolate Oreo shake. We also ordered an All American Hot Dog (Coney) combo with a strawberry shake and groovy fries. Although the double Sonic smasher burger was extremely thin, the burger was pretty good. The coney hot dog was really good. The groovy fries and onion rings were not good. They were very soggy and the fries were stuck together. We also noticed that the fries had a this slight flavor of other foods that had been cooked in the same oil. We know that Sonic is a big company, so we're not sure if this is the norm for Sonic or just an off day. All in all we really enjoyed the coney beef hot dog and the shakes! read more

Oh man, I finally got to try sonic on two occasions. The first occasion i went was on sunday at 7:30 p.m and waited 2 hours to reach the order box. The 2nd occasion was on tuesday at 11:00 p.m and waited only 30 minutes to reach the order box. I ordered a large powerade and teriyaki cheeseburger. The teriyaki cheeseburger was moist but far too much teriyaki sauce and it was very messy.
