My transmission blew on my 1998 Acura RL in the parking lot of my work. This tranny was bad when I bought the car and was lagging then jumping between gears when shifting at high RPM or in reverse. On a whim towed it to a shop in Renton but regret it when faced with lackluster service and a 5k quote. I opted to leave it there while I sought alternatives. My buddy from work recommended Dan's shop Sonny Auto Repair in Shoreline. Dan found a transmission for my car with 70k miles. While every other shop I contacted rebuilds transmissions 'per policy' prior to install (about 2k in additional labor) Dan's answer was clear: "This transmission won't need a rebuild," and quoted half of what all other shop's estimated. I thanked my coworker and towed it to Sonny Auto Repair to meet Dan. During the installation Dan was prompt and transparent with every critical process step. 1. Photo documentation of burnt fluid encrusted on engine before cleaning, and the result after cleaning. 2. Photo documentation of two separate leaking engine gaskets (unanticipated but necessary & fairly quoted extra for the parts and labor). 3. Prompt anticipation and communication of changes to estimated completion time. I had my car back in two weeks and ended up paying about 3k. Started and shifted while parked like a brand new vehicle. Drove home like a brand new vehicle. Completed 1500 mile road trip like a brand new vehicle. Completed alpine ski trip like a brand new vehicle. I know I was a bit delayed with this review but I just want to let you know it's people like Dan who make the USA great. I took my car to Dan three times. On the third time, he screwed me! He lied about my pump motor not working. He said that he changed the water pump and the coolant pump. In fact, all he did was replace the gasket on the pump and patch the hose for the coolant. When the hose started to leak again, I brought it back and he replaced it. He said it was not covered by his warranty, so he wanted the hose and labor added. He took advantage of the return customer. I will not be back again. read more

I love these guys! I've been there twice and both times was given speedy, friendly, competent service. The first time, I pulled in without an appointment because my car was acting up (It was a while ago and I can't remember now what the problem was). I think it was Dan who came out, looked under the hood, fixed the problem on the spot. And when I asked him how much I owed him, he said "don't worry about it." Then yesterday, during that record rainfall, I called to make an appointment to replace a burnt out headlight. The guy on the phone said he was booked up, but to just come over and he could have his son do it for me. When I got there the parking lot was filled with cars, so I could see that they really were completely back up. But Dan came out in the pouring rain, getting soaking wet, and replaced the headlight bulb for twenty bucks. I feel so fortunate to have these guys just a few blocks up the street from my apartment. While driving to get gas at Costco; my car suddenly had flashing lights telling me to check my emission system. My acceleration became weird and I had to quickly exit the i5 to figure out what's wrong. Not sure what to do, I hopped on Yelp to find this business 3 minutes away. I called them and the man said he had time to help me out. Turns out, this business was recently sold to a new owner/ friend named Dan. It's not Sonny anymore. Boy was a lucky to find Dan. The shop is called Shoreline Auto Repair. The business has yet to be updated online. He was able to do a quick and free diagnosis ($175 quoted at the dealership!) to find out my ignition coil was bad. He was able to call somewhere and they delivered the part. I went from a car that was shaking and breaking down going 15mph to back on the road in less than 1 hour. Best of all it was quick and affordable. As someone who has minimal knowledge on cars, it's always a fear that mechanics would take advantage of me. However Dan is honest and reliable. I would 10/10 recommend him to anyone! read more

From my experience they were unprofessional. I had stopped in with electrical questions to my truck & was told by the owner to return the following week, anytime Monday-Tuesday. And to leave my truck for a few hours. When I asked for an appointment, he said it was not necessary. I returned on Tuesday, the owner said he was too busy & to come back Friday! In both instances, he did not ask any further questions what so ever & didn't even take any information about me or my truck down. Very informal & whatever attitude. Not dependable & timely. The most horrible auto repair shop ever. Came there to fix the ballast for my car, he gave me a link to order the ballast online. After 2 months, the ballast broke again and he said it wasn't his fault as I am the one who order the ballast online not him. Totally not responsible for what he had done. And the price is not cheap as well, just average price but as u walk out of that shop, he not gonna do anything if problem happen what the stuff he fixed. I would say you either love it or hate it. With Sonny, you are not getting dealership service. If you need a job done and he is available, he can diagnose the problem and fix it for you. It's a one man shop. My old Subaru has been fixed a number of times by Sonny and it's 230K miles and still ticking. He has fixed a number of small and big issues like replacing the timing belt and the radiator assembly. It would have cost me an arm and a leg at a dealership. Recently my headlight isn't working and I took it to his shop. He was still on his phone when I parked, and he troubleshooted it while on the phone and just tighten my headlamp and it worked. He just smiled and waived me goodbye while still on the other line. The whole process took 5 minutes and without him saying one word to me :) He is good and kind is his own odd ways. When he gets busy he turns you away. He doesn't really have a schedule book. He is just a neighborhood mechanics that does a good job. I know I am paying for his skill as a mechanics and not for those suit and tie guys at the dealership. I am still taking my new Prius to Toyota :) If you have a newer vehicle and if you want ease of mind, go to the established shops or dealership, but if you have an older vehicle and on budget, see Sonny. I just called him up on Sat morning and he picked it up. He told me to go get an alignment at Costco for my Prius. He is just honest that way :) read more

Beware of this place. They will fix your car but break something else so you can spend more money there. I had a broken radiator replaced for $250 but they didn't even replace the upper and lower hoses. I found this out the hard way on my way home from work in traffic the upper hose exploded. I had to bring in the car again just to find out they only replaced the radiator. They went ahead to replace the upper hose but not the lower hose and even charged $80. When changing radiator, the upper and lower hoses should also be replaced. This place deserves no stars if yelp allows. read more
