My relatives brought me straight here as soon as my plane came in from California. I gotta say that everything here is delicious and the service is amazing! Ordered a sweet tea, which was served pretty much in a barrel. I didn't need a refill; it was so ginormous. Had their brisket sandwich on garlic bread which was so perfect. The brisket was so flavorful. My grandma - thank god for our sweet, patient server - ordered wings, fried with no sauce, and they were perfectly done. Love the remodel the place looks great! Food was delicious and portions were huge. The gem of our visit though was our server (Valerie?). Being a bar manager who has worked just about every position in a restaurant I know a veteran server when I spot one and this woman was on point! From her menu recommendations, to her knowledge of prices and uncharges, as well as a painstaking attention to detail. Her service was absolutely seamless. Our waitress who seemed like she hates life just threw our straws all over the table like she was feeding chickens. This is my FAVORITE BBQ Restaurant ever. And I LOVE it when we can get Louise Richards. My husband and I eat out a lot and we have come in contact with some really good servers but Louise is the best of the BEST‼‼ She checks on you a LOT but to over the top where it becomes to much. I have eaten here for years, and have never been disappointed! The sliced pork is the best, always served fast and hot. The smoke flavor is just rite, not too harsh, but full of smoky goodness. The cole slaw is cold and creamy and the perfect size and crispness. I like to mix the smokin hot bbq with the sonny's mild to have the perfect balance of heat and savory. Very unhappy with my dinner tonight. We decided to pick up our dinner tonight and bring it back home to eat and the food was just not good. The baby back ribs were burnt barely had BBQ sauce on them. Great food! We went to the Sonny's in Port Orange, FL, enjoyed the food there tremendously. Same experience here. We ordered the family feast of four for $39.99. It was real good. Our waitress April, was very professional and polite. The only thing I would say my family and I were surprised about was them running out of pink lemonade! We wound up having to drink Sprite instead which my wife and I prefer or kids not kids not to drink because of the excess sugar. Oh well! read more

I was a loyal patron for 20 odd years. When pulled pork became available I went elsewhere. I like my pulled pork sandwich, Memphis style, with cole slaw and put my own sauce on as I eat. Now how much slaw does it take to make a good sandwich? About 2 tablespoons. The cole slaw should be dry so the sandwich does not become soaked with the white milky substance pervasive in Sonny's cole slaw. For years I ordered a small container probably 2 ozs. for $.50 to put on to my sandwich. It's now $1. It took 6-8 napkins to soak up enough liquid in order to be left with cole slaw dry enough for my sandwich. That amount of Cole slaw is now $1. It's not on the menu. So I ordered a pulled pork sandwich Carolina style which comes with Cole slaw on it along with Special sauce. I had them hold the sauce, which is available on the table by the way. I paid $7.99 for this sandwich. The regular pulled pork sandwich is about $6.50. So I was charged about &2.50 for the Cole slaw, about one tablespoon full. For about the SE I could have ordered a side of Cole slaw. After I complained to my lovely waitress, who has served me hundreds of times, she brought me the $1 container of Cole slaw and charged my the pulled pork sandwich amount instead of the over priced Carolina version. The Cole slaw is now much less moist than before, to an acceptable degree. I hope Sonny pulls the Carolina sandwich from the menu and adds a Memphis sandwich at a reasonable price. read more

Sonny's has always been a family favorite, but recent changes and shortcomings are making us rethink our almost weekly visits. Twice recently, they have been out of something we ordered. Then, tonight, I noticed that the cole slaw looked different than what we are used to here. When I tasted it, it was obvious that they had changed the recipe. It is no longer creamy and crisp. I usually don't write reviews but I had to after the way the manager Scott Stricklin spoke to our waitress Michelle and I in front of other guests. This is only my 3rd time dining in at this location. My first visit I was having a beer at the bar and was told they had a 3 beer max, mind you the mugs are tiny and honestly don't think it's even 12 oz but I said really, ok never heard of that before but I left it at that and paid my check. My 2nd visit was ok then last night I return with a friend and decided to order a pitcher instead since a glass is 2.99 and the pitcher is 6.99.. So the manager got angery at our waitress for giving me a pitcher of beer for my friend and I then came over and spoke to me like I was a problem before when I was nothing but polite and he said I told you before there's a 3 beer max very rude, angry with a very bad attitude then gave me smirks every time he walked past our table... I said Ok but here with a guest and did it mostly because of the cost. I honestly do not understand the logic behind this 3 beer max however my biggest issue is how unprofessional he was towards our waitress and us. I did nothing at all to deserve this, we literally just got there. I was not intoxicated by any means, I couldn't even finish the pitcher. I wanted to say something back to him but I left it alone because I'm not an angry argumentative person so I decided to write this review instead. After working all day we all decided on some BBQ, we were really hungry and Sonnys was close by. All was fine and we were in a good mood , I ordered the pulled pork sandwich , my better half ordered the salad bar , our boy (18 ) ordered all you can eat ribs and his girlfriend wasn't very hungry so she ordered a side .I have no idea what happened but as soon as we were served and had a few bites the manager came and took the plate , YES the plate of ribs from the 18 year old , no second order and not even one full rib bone eaten!!! I've been eating Sonny's since they opened the location in Baton Rouge in the mid 70's. I now live in Orange Park, FL. Ever since they added the bar and changed from paying at the counter to the waitress handling the check the service has gone completely south. Years ago we ate here often and it was great. The menu has changed and we weren't impressed. They don't have the thin sliced beef anymore - just thick sliced brisket. We won't be going back - better barbecue elsewhere. None of us had the ribs so I don't know if they are still good. read more

I have always loved Sonny's and this was the first time I had been in this particular location. Yesterday my husband and I went here for our first anniversary. We had problems with both the food and the service. We started off with the Redneck Egg Rolls. The kitchen staff person that brought it to the table was apparently having a bad day; she did not make eye contact and more or less tossed the platter on the table. There was no sauce. After several minutes we managed to get the attention of our waitress, and after about five more minutes, the sauce finally arrived. Of course the appetizer was cold by then, but there was no offer to get us another order. I only managed to eat one and one bite of a second since, although they tasted "okay", that second one had a huge bone in it. The thing was over a half inch in diameter! The mouth-feel of that large a bone was very off-putting so I could not stomach eating anymore. My husband ended up finishing them. I was further disappointed that when I bought it to our server's attention (the bone was plainly visible on the plate) she did not seem overly concerned...and unlike any other reputable restaurant we frequent, there was no offer to speak with a manager or to "comp" the carelessly made, unacceptable appetizer. . I was willing to let it slide since their ribs were excellent and the tiny bit of pulled pork I tasted was also good. I took the rest of the pulled pork home along with the beans and my sweet potato. I just got finished eating them and I am not happy! The sweet potato was over-cooked and had burnt spots, and the beans were almost soupy, but what upset enough to cause me to write this was the pulled pork. I found ANOTHER bone! This one was not quite as large as the other one, and at least I caught it BEFORE it went into my mouth, but it never should have been there to start with! I have never experienced this in any other B-B-Q restaurant...and definitely not at a Sonny's. Their quality control at this restaurant is very poor and we will not be back! read more

Stopped in to pickup some pulled pork for a family BBQ. There menu gives the price per pound. What it doesn't say is that a half a pound is a different price. Nor was it mentioned at checkout. On top of the differing price, I ordered 1 1/2 pounds so they ring it up as 1 pound at stated menu price and ring up the 1/2 pound at the higher price. When I spoke to the manager he said that they couldn't do anything about it. They don't set the price and the only way to ring up 1 1/2 pounds is to ring them up separately. I told him that they should disclose that. He took my number and said he would have his boss call me but never heard from anyone. Not very customer friendly. read more

My husband brought Sonny's home for dinner last night and I must say Never Again! I ordered and he picked up. They must have thought we were two year olds because the meals were definitely not for adults. My husband got the Sampler dinner ( kid size ) and I got the turkey big deal sandwich. I had four pieces of turkey on my sandwich and it was on a bun not the garlic bread that I ordered. I also ordered the baby back ribs for my son (baby) is the correct word to use. We have eaten at Sonny's since returning to FL in 2006 and have never had problems. The manager (Marcellus) offered to replace our meal but who wants to drive 30 minutes to get a replacement dinner and take the chance of someone doing something nasty to our food. I loved this place when I lived in Orange Park (most of my life) and I still try to make it back when I'm visiting my family. The portions are extremely generous and the food is great! The beginning of my visit was nice. We were seated quickly and our drinks came out fast. After that, our waitress did not come back to the table. I waited an hour because I really wanted to eat here. Well I gotta say this smilin angel faced yungun met us at the the front door and welcomed us like she knew us from way back. We never met Ms. Kerri before! We did today! You wish to feel welomed? Be sure to ask for her section. She sat us down at our table right away even though it was busy. She asked us how we were? Now what young person really ever cares what us older bunch feels or cares about anybody but theirselves? I was automatically a fan of Ms. Kerri. Natural sweetness. Made us feel right at home. She was as humorous as she was cute. I thought young people lost that spirit of comfort. Not this girl! She asked us if we liked our seat and offered us menus and brought our drink order. We are cheap! We chose water! Water! With lemon. The glasses that held the water that she brought us were huge! She retorted we would never go thirsty as long as she was with us! And I did not go thirsty I assure you! We ordered and ate. She kept coming by to see if all was well and if we were happy with our food and her excellent attentive service and our reluctant new choice of the corn bread! Oh hell yeah! That corn bread over the garlic bread any day. It wasa great recommendation. Awesome sweet welcoming attitudes are gone and missing from businesses today. This young lady revived a long lost art of southern hospitality. We damn near hated to leave! We are gonna miss her. She should be you poster child for Welcome To Sonny's. There was a time we would have gladly passed ya'll up and gone to Cracker Barrel instead for their fried chicken special on Sunday. But my girl wanted your damn fat french fries. Which were absolutely perfect today thank you! I love em too. Well Kerri made me re assess my decision to try ol' Sonny's out one more time!
