Maybe the best BBQ I've had in years and the sides are amazing especially the Mac and cheese

I have a confession to make-I think Sonnys has really good BBQ. Maybe not as good as Woodpeckers but certainly the best of the BBQ chains. Over the years I've had it all-chicken, ribs, pulled pork, brisket and their salads and all are very good to excellent. This trip my wife and I wanted wings and were pleasantly surprised by their tasty smoked wings. We love wings and actually think that Sonnys are some of the best. While they are limited to either dry rub or various bbq sauces ( no exotic options here) they were large meaty , and tender wings. We both had green beans as our side and they were nicely spiced and delicious. My brother had the bbq slider trio which consisted of a brisket , pork and chicken slider. It came with fries, three garnishes and sauces wwhich I could tell he enjoyed as nothing was left on his plate! The Orange Park Sonnys is nicely and corporately decorated and most of their restaurants look similar. Our waitress was outstanding but unfortunately I can't remember her name only her charming British accent. read more

It's been quite some time since we've been to Sonny's but I was feeling nostalgic. I went for their salad but instead chose a pound of brisket and a side of beans. Carl had the salad with pork. The salad, as always was huge, big enough for lunch the next day. Carl said the pork was perfect. My brisket was moist, with just the right amount of fattiness. Beans were, as expected, yummy. Service was super fast and friendly. Didn't notice any music, and conversation was not hampered by noise at all. Leftovers for a few more meals. Hint: if you are watching carbs you may want to omit onion straws and corn from salad. We didn't realize. Picking the straws off was easy. Corn, not so much. It does make for a tasty salad so we're not mad. They offered BOGO sandwiches this day so we went with turkey sandos to go. All in all a win. read more

Lately, Sonny's reward program is paying off. This week was BOGO sandwiches. The sandwiches were great sized and a great price. We had a turkey and pulled pork. Subdued. . . .when we first went into the restaurant just after it opened at 11a.m., the hostess seemed "not thrilled" to see our Red Hat Chapter members showing up. I had made the staff aware of our plans a month earlier and again two days before our Thursday arrival. I know there are no reservations but I didn't want a group of 15 being a "surprise." It didn't matter, she wasn't pleased. Nevertheless, some tables were put together in the back and we were seated. But, for almost a half an hour, nothing happened. Then, waitperson Vinessa arrived to work and she was told to be our server. Honestly, she was as upset by the lack of cordiality by the staff that was already there as we were. She got right on our drink orders and then took our meal orders. She didn't seem to get much help, but she's so competent that she handled it well. Kudos to her! The food was very tasty and that part all enjoyed. So, in the end, things were good but I can't give five stars because of the initial lack of welcoming. Out running errands and decided to stop by Sonny's for a late lunch. It took us awhile to get seated and there were not a lot of customers at the time. We ordered ribs and shredded brisket, along with the sides - it was delicious! Enough food to take some home for another meal. I must admit, I really like the sweet tangy BBQ sauce. (We had Sonny's for Thanksgiving dinner, and I had the chance to experiment to see which sauce I liked better.) Service, by Vicki, was good. Restaurant was clean. Oh Sonny's (Orange Park, FL), you were one disappointment after another, let me count the ways. 1. The Male host who seated us was a "loud mouth". Everything he said, you could hear him all across the restaurant. He would holler "corner" or "five two, or five whatever". At one point he stopped to chat with the couple sitting at the booth behind us, but he pretty much stood next to my husband, making us stop our conversation because he was so loud we could no longer converse. 2. Our waitress was totally distracted from taking our order. 3. When our ordered was delivered to us, I had to remind her I ordered green beans, not baked beans, so she went and brought me a bowl of green beans. Half of my garlic bread was lying on top the baked beans and therefore was soaking up the juice of the baked beans and it was nasty & disgusting. 4. When I received my green beans, they were mushy and full of macaroni noodles so obviously someone was very careless. 5. Not once did our waitress come to our table to check on us or ask if we needed anything, all the while she stopped at her other two tables across from us. 6. After we sat there for a few minutes after finished eating, my husband had to stop her after I counted that she had passed our table 5x never looking at us (btw I was watching her like a hawk!!). 7. The host nor our waitress introduced themselves by name and apparently Sonny's doesn't require name tags as none of the employees had one, therefore I cannot mention them by name. 8. Your menu sucks!! I understand change is required from time to time, but you have minimized it too much and taken many popular items away. read more

We've been eating here for years. Generally the food is good. They do struggle with fresh bread and French fries they sit too long under a heat lamp. Someone needs to let them know the first thing tasted is a side. Today was no different. Seems like they consistently run out of clean cups often serving drinks in Togo cups and today no clean silverware has to use plastic take out. Now I'm questioning how clean the kitchen is. Suns barbecue 20-30 years ago used to be the best. Now it's OK. You're not cooking the ribs as long as they used to so they're not as tender. Baked beans used to be the best, but for some reason, they don't taste as good any longer. They changed it somehow. If it's not broken, don't fix it . The lady that took our order rushed through it didn't listen to a word we said about our food. She brought the burger with everything on it when I told her I wanted plain with nothing on it, but the bacon and cheese then she brought it back and just had cheese and nothing else on it. I'm highly upset at this establishment and how the services They serve my mom with baked beans she didn't want that. She told her that she wanted green beans and when they got the green beans to our table, they were cold and look like it came out of the bottom of the of the pan. Then when we got my check, it had a bacon cheeseburger on there when I had no bacon on my burger, and the lady kept on checking on us not even stopping just running through us every single time she asked us about something she really needs. Her service checked on because she does not deserve to be in that kind of position and I will not be bringing back my business to this place ever again unless it gets taken care of And you guys only deserve a half a star for this service read more

I normally stay away from the chain type bbq restaurants but Sonny's in Orange Park has been very good. I have had a chance to do take-out as well as dine in and the quality has been very consistent. The bbq pork egg rolls and corn nuggets are must try appetizers. Both the baby back and St. Louis ribs are amazing and the smoked wings have a great taste. The sweet cornbread is like eating dessert. I will say that the sides are average but then again nobody eats bbq for the side dishes. read more

I really enjoyed the business lunch today at this establishment, from the moment we opened the front door. The smell of wood burning was welcoming, on a relatively chilly day in Jacksonville, the hostess was prompt and amicable and seated us promptly. Service was good, the waitress was polite,took our orders promptly and checked on us while he had our meals. I had a beef brisket sandwich, on garlic bread, with baked beans and cole slaw, and what a good decision that was. At only $7.95 was priced appropriately. read more

Okay, we all know the food is pretty good. They need some help in operations though. They had a plethora of people the day I went. I don't know too many places that have 8-10 people working To-Go. We ordered online. We received notification the food would be ready in 12 minutes. About an hour later they package our food. We grabbed a Sonny's Amber at the bar to pass the time. We weren't the only ones either. Several people walked out or asked for refunds. It was highly inconsistent. Some people would walk up and order and grab their food before those waiting. The food also had varying temperatures meaning they cooked and placed to the side. It was an unmitigated disaster today lol. I feel bad for the servers who were all arguing with each other and complaining about either being behind or about each other. I will come back as I have been going to this location since I was 3 lol. read more

Ordered this tonight through UberEats because I got 75% off my order with zero delivery fee which is entirely good to pass up. I ordered the redneck egg rolls and the sweet Carolina pulled pork sandwich combo. Overall, the presentation was poor. The driver forgot to leave the drink and had to return with it (not a Sonny's problem and in no way is reflected in my rating). However, to throw three egg rolls in a container and send them out the door uncut is pretty lazy. Additionally there was so little coleslaw on the sandwich it was embarrassing. (See pictures). This is the cheapest part of the entire order after all. The fries weren't even crispy. Overall the pork was moist and flavorful. Didn't need to add any sauce to it, but at best this was a mediocre meal. Won't be rushing back here in the future. read more

The food was good but our waiter David was hilariously bad. He was unsure about everything, forgot about drinks, and could not listen to what we were saying. Decided we wanted some BBQ for dinner and Sonny's was nearby. My daughter and I went to the take out counter and I mentioned I was getting food for three people and asked about their pick three combo (three meats and two sides). At only $16 I thought the price was low and asked if the cashier thought it would work. She assured me it would so I ordered the Brisket (good but not great), the ribs (really tasty) and the pulled pork (an absolute home run sand the reason they got 4 stars). When the cashier gave my total it was $60+?? Turns out it was $16 per person and she thought I wanted three orders. I am honestly not mad about the cost because the quantity and quality fit the price. I just wish the pricing was a bit more clear. (My daughter even took a picture of the menu board so that if my wife was upset about the cost we had proof). Definitely better BBQ than I remember from years ago when I was here last. Placed a curbside order before 4pm for pickup at 4:30. Was not informed of long wait times despite holiday. Got to restaurant before 4:30 and waited until almost 5:30 before it was finally brought out. Noticed the sweet potato was left out & made sure to get that. The overall food was not bad. The fried okra was cold and noticed bagged a little messy. The biggest disappointment was the banana pudding. One of the cups was filled about halfway with no bananas and two cookies. Definitely not worth the $3.99 price tag. If you're going to charge $4, you should give the customer their money's worth, especially making sure bananas are in the banana pudding. read more

Started 1968 in Gainesville, FL with their first location off of Waldo Road, I've been a huge fan of Sonny's BBQ since before my college days. They serve authentic slow-smoked, real Southern BBQ with a flavor I've always loved plus all of the fixings. Fast forward 30 years.... I've been coming to this Sony's location for over 15 years now and I've never had a bad experience yet. This is our go-to place when family comes into town or someone is sick in the hospital. It's right across the street from Orange Park Medical Center & they have plenty of parking so it's never an issue. The service is very friendly and accommodating for large groups. You can call ahead or just go a little early and the staff will set it all up for you. Solid lunch spot if you're in the mood for BBQ. The smoked meats have been consistently juicy, delicious and just perfectly cooked with the sliced pork being my favorite. It's what you would expect from Sonny's BBQ. This location has been very consistent for me over the years. They have an ordering window just for the to-go orders which is convenient when taking out and a little waiting area to sit while they prepare your food. Management is usually around to make sure everything is running smoothly and efficiently here. BTW, they do cater. For those with a sweet tooth, they offer a mean banana pudding and a variety of fruit cobblers that you must try. If you forgot to leave room, there's no good reason you can't take it to go. This is a pretty busy location during peak hours, but they always seem to get your food out to you in a reasonable time. Overall, customer service is friendly, they have perfect sweet tea, a fresh salad bar and I was informed that they are doing a total renovation here in the next few months. I have been eating here since the 70's. NEVER have I had to send something back. I ordered a pulled pork plate and was served over cooked skin and fat. The server Arianna, told me she didn't eat meat, so she didn't know if it was normal. I used to love Sonny's but I'll drive to Jacksonville or Starke. The Orange Park location serves fat and the server giggles instead of offering a replacement. read more

This place has reinvented it self , removing items from the menu even though they still offer it. The new concept is streamlined yet it seems if you ask they have it. Why isn't it offered proudly. The upgraded dining room is fine. I miss the original restaurant and I miss the salad bar and the Brunswick Stew. I guess it was a casualty of Covid! read more
