Good Friday dinner I only had 6 or so hours to go until I could eat meat or poultry. I had also just arrived in Jacksonville after driving down from Atlanta, for which the rest of the drive to the Fort Lauderdale area would take place the following day. I know the lay of the land where I-95 and the JTB come together and it's not the sort of area to look for innovation in lodging and restauration. Instead, there will be hotel and restaurant brands you recognize. That might be boring, but the consolation is that the area is fairly manicured and sits in Jacksonville's better quadrant. I looked on my phone and was willing to go a little ways to enjoy some tasty fish for dinner on Good Friday. I kept going in circles, not really finding anything. I threw in the towel and went to this Cracker Barrel. I'm sort of glad I did. They feature nightly specials and it seems that, on Friday, they have a platter named a Fish Fry. It's not buffet style, but they do include 4 pieces of fish. As can be expected for a Southern born and themed place, it will be very breaded. I chose 3 sides instead of just 2. I deserved this perk after such a long drive through swaths of cracker territory. I ordered baked beans, broccoli, and a hash potato type casserole. All of the sides were good, with the potato being the winner. I could have eaten more of it. And it goes without saying that the fish was also good. The service was prompt and amicable, with my coffee being refilled on the regular. For the quantity and for it all being fairly decent, the value was there. Sure, I would have liked to have had some broiled fish at an indie locale, but I was tired. The drive was arduous and this would be the midpoint of the trip. Instead of following I-75 south, I took I-10 east and then I-95 south, which would then lead to South Florida. That last leg on I-10 always makes me ponder life upon seeing thick stands of Southern pine en route to Florida's largest yet not so well-known city of Jacksonville, which is then all the more interesting to me because this is transcontinental I-10's eastern endpoint, whereas I was born near its western endpoint. This store follows a boilerplate seen chainwide from sea to shining sea. The general store is an annoyance to me, but it seems to be a place where blue hairs, Karens who didn't go to college, and little kids might find things "cute." The food is what is now tritely known as "comfort food," a term that might be heard about as often as the declaration that someone has boundary issues. However, this Cracker Barrel, as do most, does a fairly good job with that "comfort food." read more

My son liked the pancakes the best. Biscuits and gravy and a house salad- my daughter's bday request and she loved the ranch dressing. Pancake breakfast for my other daughter. For my husband, the honey butter fried chicken. While the taste was great, there was almost no meat and all breading on all except for the chicken breast, so was a let down. Best meal tip: And then for me, hands down the best meal which all agreed to: grilled chicken strip meal with two sides (house salad and hash brown casserole). While the casserole was lukewarm, I ordered a side of the honey butter for the grilled chicken and it literally melted the chicken. In my mouth. Since the bistro at my hotel closed after 10, I decided to eat here for breakfast. I checked in, and got lucky to get seated immediately. I took the breakfast sandwich with egg and chicken sausage, and hash browns casserole on the side. It was about 13 dollars after taxes and tips. The chicken sausage was wonderful as it was juicy and plump. The sausage had a nice kick and great flavor of the chicken. I was also impressed with the hash browns casserole, which was seasoned well. The eggs was a bit runny, however still enjoyable. The bread was bit too sweet, so I left that out. The service was quick and very friendly. I was able to pay by mobile phone, so hopefully they knew I paid through there. The atmosphere is a typical Cracker Barrel, with the shop at the entrance, then the dining area afterwards. There could be a wait, but I got very lucky. It was within walking distance from my hotel, which made it so easy for me. I was quite impressed at the Cracker Barrel. First time visiting and I had a great time. Restaurant was clean and welcoming and the server was super friendly. We ordered Sheperd's pie and Country Fried Steak which came with cornbread and biscuits and the fried onion app. The biscuits were amazing! Especially with the apple butter and/or gravy. I wasn't a fan of the cornbread but everything else was delicious. The Shepherd's pie had large chunks of tender beef and the hash brown topping was extra! The Country fried steak was also delicious. They give you such ample servings that we only were able to eat half and saved the rest for the next day. The fried onions were good but probably not necessary with all that we ordered. The server was nice enough to give us extra biscuits to take with us. Would definitely go again when I'm craving a comfy American meal. Oh and the store out front is so fun! read more

My husband and I were traveling and we did not expect to eat at Cracker Barrel for Valentine's Day, but we're sure glad we did! It's right next-door to our hotel with a four minute walk. Robbie was our waiter and he was very accommodating professional patient and knowledgeable of the menu. My husband had been craving catfish and he was so surprised to see it on the menu. This Cracker Barrel location is surrounded by what must be about a dozen hotels, so it's not a stretch to imagine that most of their customers are hotel-goers that visit once and never again -- unfortunately, the quality of the kitchen seems to be reflective of that. The server was great and made the best of the hand she was given, but it was still disappointing to wait around 30 minutes for undercooked eggs, then another 5-10 minutes for properly cooked but cold eggs. I want to share the outstanding customer service experience I've had on 3 separate visits to my local Cracker Barrel. I visit the location every couple of weeks, primarily to stop by the gift shop. On all three visits, a young man, by the name of Dominick (I believe that is his name) has greeted each and every customer with a hearty welcome and a smile. He has been helpful, friendly and polite on each visit. He is a genuine asset to your establishment and a welcome change from what we usually encounter in the general retail industry. Came here on a Thursday around 12:15 with a group of 8 of us and we were seated quickly without any issues. The restaurant was about half full. I think Cracker Barrel has a very big menu with breakfast and lunch options. The best part is their sides and biscuits. Normally I get the veggie plate but I decided to try the catfish which I've never had before. I was impressed it was crispy on the outside and flaky. Lightly seasoned, very mild fish and not fishy tasting at all. For sides I got the salad, broccoli and grits. All were fresh tasting and very yummy. The ONLY time of year that I come back to Cracker Barrel is during campfire chicken and beef. I wish they would have a year round! They lost me a long time ago when they stopped serving omelettes, English muffin, the Saturday chicken and rice with delicious gravy, the new one doesn't compare to what it used to be, in fact, it was terrible. For breakfast, I'd rather go to Waffle House and get fresh cooked bacon instead of oven bacon that's been sitting , an omelette of my choice and really good hashbrowns. I've never had a bad meal here and that streak continued with my latest visit. They surprisingly weren't too crowded on a Sunday afternoon and we were able to get a table without any wait. I have always LOVED cracker barrel. From the food , down to the store and the staff. This time that was definitely not the case.. server seems robotic and scripted.. Then there's the food. Definitely not the same since the whole rebranding change stuff I guess ? Idk much about it not do I care , I care about the good food im used too ! Grits not even cooked. Hard uncooked bits all mixed in. We each (3 people) ordered hershalls breakfast or whatever... Didn't even get any biscuits to begin with ... Then the 3 of us were ALL missing the biscuits and gravy portion of our breakfast meal. When we asked about it , we were brought out ONE small side of gravy.. and 3/4 biscuits. In one basket. For 3 separate people who ordered it. That's ONE PORTION! NOT 3. They said it's "family style" but we weren't offered gravy refills ??? I would give this a 0 if I could! I thought this was a family restaurant for locals and for travelers. They are not service dog friendly! My Labradoodle is 8yrs old and very well behaved. Very mellow. He lays on the floor right beside me. They put us in the back all alone and hidden from everyone. waitress came over with a menu and I asked for coffee and water for Guinness. She refused to give him water. Kinda shocked I asked why? You're not dog friendly here? She said there district manager is here... Cracker Barrel really is going down in quality in their food. First let me say the water literally tastes like poison tonight. I went and bought us water bottles from the lobby 1.49 each spring water. Biscuits are terrible now. Taste not fresh. Mash potatoes taste like instant potatoes. Dumplings don't taste the same. On a good note our server Nicole was pleasant and did a good job with what she could. Such a shame we used to love CB. Now the new ugly logo. On March 23, my friend took me to Cracker Barrel for my birthday. We were seated quickly and...we interacted with the waiter a total of FOUR times. He NEVER asked how everything was, did we need anything or even offering us refills on tea. We didn't even know his name. When my friend mentioned it to the cashier, her response was "Sorry about that ". Not an answer that many customers would appreciate. We should have complained to the manager about lack of customer service. Cracker barrel was on the menu once I saw the sign on I95. Cracker barrel is not only a restaurant but a store for the weary travelers. Buses, vans and cars surround the good old fashion establishment. The hostess and waiter did their thing. We did our thing. My 1 Arnold palmer's wet my whistle. Our entree were amazing. We are long-time regular customers. so it really disappoints when this CB misses the mark. Was looking forward to my fried shrimp dinner last week. Literally, only half of the butterfly shrimp (out of 15 pieces) were edible. You won't believe this because we couldn't believe what we were seeing, either; the other half of the shrimp (15 total shrimp) were just that - half of a shrimp. I pinched the breading off where the actual shrimp should have been, to see the ragged edges where someone had actually EATEN (as in taken a bite out of) the shrimp. The cook made little hushpuppies and stuck them on the 'used' shrimp tails (that's what it looked like). I hope they did not save half-eaten shrimp from someone's plate, doctor them up, fry them again, sell them again, and give them to someone to consume. Not to mention I should have called the health department on them. CB needs to check into this. Meanwhile, we'll take our business elsewhere. It has taken me a week to calm down and not send a blistering email. If your cook did not do this, then you need to find out if your supplier did it and hold someone accountable. In the meantime, I am holding you accountable. read more

This particular Cracker Barrel is not far off of J. Turner Butler Boulevard and today a few clients and I headed there for lunch. Two of the clients were huge fans. We got there about noon and found that we had a twenty minute wait. We entertained ourselves by perusing the items in the country store until our name was called and we were seated and were situated with our drinks. Since two of the clients (the same two who were huge fans of Cracker Barrel) kept raving about the meatloaf and telling me that my life would not be complete until I have tried it. So, since I would like to have my life complete, I went with the meatloaf and chose hashbrown casserole and turnip greens as my two sides. First, our server brought us our biscuits. Honestly, I have had better, but they were not that bad. Our server brought the meatloaf and the two fans started oohing and ahhing and fawning over their food. My take, again, it was ok. There was nothing truly wrong with it, however there was nothing that gave the meatloaf any depth or dimension. Food should have a soul and yet this was one dimensional. I am a big fan of the mom and pop type independent places and you would think that southern food would definitely be better from a mom and pop operation, that a local business could add that aforementioned soul to their food and make that dish soar. That is the problem with any Cracker Barrel that I have been in. I just feel that the menu is built by a corporate boardroom and not by someone truly passionate about cooking. Again, the food is not terrible. It actually was enjoyable, but nothing special nor nothing beyond what most national chain restaurants offer, which is a soulless rendition of a classic meal. I went because of the passion that two of my clients held for this restaurant. I went in with an open mind and left with a full stomach, but, unfortunately, not with a new outlook on Cracker Barrel.
