This place is slept on! It's been a go to in my family for years but we haven't been in a while. There is indoor seating and a covered patio, the inside is very family Italian aesthetic. Decided to come for Father's Day and it was pretty packed, there was a wait even at 4pm. But omg was it worth it! The bruschetta was very garlicky and a great fresh appetizer on a hot day. The free garlic bread was also very good, nothing groundbreaking but we enjoyed it. Shockingly, the fettuccine Alfredo was the dish that changed my life. This was SO good, the kind you start eating and immediately wish you could take the full portion home with you. Rich, creamy, garlicky, with lots of chicken this was the star of the show. The spicy sausage ragu special was also delicious with a broiled Parmesan crust that rly pulled it together. The pizza was good but in my opinion the pasta is definitely the way to go here. The only less than awesome thing here was the house red wine - it just tasted off? I was not a fan. Next time we will try a bottle of something but it was almost undrinkable. read more

I don't think the food or service was exceptional, but it's not disappointing either. It is a casual sit down with reasonable prices for the area. I can't believe how lucky I was to come here. I'm at the coolest waitress and she was clearly in my opinion somebody that should own this place, but I had to have the fettuccine Alfredo. Everything is good here, but personally a few items stand out. The calamari is a vibrant breaded appetizer with a nice firm bite. Squeeze some lemon and dip in the sauce and you won't regret it. Even without sauce, this calamari is king. The pasta noodles are perfect, al dente style. I've only tries their pesto sauce, it is good however a bit too creamy for my taste...still most will enjoy the pesto. If you can, add on a sausage to your dish. It is well worth the add on. Parking is a small private lot, which is great because I'm not sure where anyone can find street parking nearby. read more

The drink was AWFUL, tasted like pure water and no flavor. The pasta was decent, it was creamy, and had good flavor, I definitely would've gotten chicken but it was an additional $8 on top of a $20 pasta. The bread however was delicious and super warm, I wish I could have more! The place itself was cute, it was very barn/italy theme. My boyfriend got the reservation and they seated us outside. The service took a bit as the waiter was serving many tables at once. However, food came around 20 minutes or so. Parking was a massacre, there is like 5 spots right by the restaurant, so I'd recommend street parking. We have been coming here since they opened and have always had a great experience. We ordered the calamari, very good. There were nine of us and everyone enjoyed their meal. The only negative was my daughter ordered a chopped salad and they put way too much dressing on it. The baked rigatoni, pizza, pasta with calamari, and butter squash ravioli were delicious. Sonny's is a popular homey Italian joint in San Clemente. I came here around 6pm on a Sunday and waited about 20 minutes for a table. It's a cute place and there are plenty of options on the menu. I opted for the jumbo stuffed shells and shared the roman orgy pizza and antipasto salad. The marinara sauce from the jumbo shells was delicious and I spooned up every last bit. I thought the pizza was alright and salad was good. Once my group left around 7pm there were multiple parties waiting outside (30min+ wait). It's a solid Italian spot but honestly don't see myself waiting more than 30 minutes for a table. read more

We have been coming to Sonnys for 30 years. We ordered the lobster mack n cheese tonight and there was not any lobster in our mac n cheese for $25.95. We were over charged by $2.00 on our lasagna dinner. awe also ordered 2 pizzas. We received a total of 4 pieces of bread for both the lobster mac and cheese and the lasagna dinner. Our order was for 4 people and i asked for additional bread and was told no. I would have paid for more bread but the cashier said no that is all you get. We spent $100 on to go order including a tip to staff and we are not happy. since when does a restaurant over charge you, not give you the food we ordered and then argue with customer when 4 people get to split 4 small pieces of garlic bread. Wow. With Momoku no Usagi right there, I almost didn't go here but I've heard such rave reviews about this place - especially the spicy sausage ragu - that I had to go here. I'm not easily impressed by Italian places. I think most places don't have enough flavor in their pasta and they try to make it up by disguising it with their sauces and cheese (and sometimes even their sauces are bland). Sonny's exceeded my expectations. I see why this is a staple here. We got here on a Saturday in the mid afternoon so we missed the rush, and I'm glad because I now love this place. Everything came out around the same time and everything was so hot and very clearly only just made. I love that. Spicu sausage ragu: 10/10. I got the tomato cream sauce which is like a combo of their tomato and Alfredo sauces. I was tempted to get just the regular tomato which I might do enxt time, but that tomato cream is phenomenal. The pasta is also very well seasoned. I'm absolutely getting this again. It was perfect. So fresh, so crispy. Alfredo pasta: 8/10. This was a build your own. Personally, I prefer more garlic but this was good! Gnocchi with pesto cream: 7/10. The gnocchi are balls instead of the usually ovals, which is cute! It's like the size of a mini mozzarella ball. I think the texture is not for everyone and it was the slightest bit overcooked but done better than most places. The pesto cream sauce is good. Garlic bread: 9/10. All technique and done well. Maybe the teeneist bit dry which is fine because I used it to mop up the sauce Service was great. Our waitress was nice and the general ambiance / other patrons there are also so nice. I've been here twice. The first time the service was great and the food was phenomenal. The last time I came in was a different story. We came in on a Friday night. We were told it was a 1 hour wait but we were seated rather quickly. When we sat down we were told one of their ovens was broken. The waiter came by took our order and left. We got our drinks and my friend got her salad and then nothing. For over two hours the waiters walked past us and ignored us while running around the restaurant. At no point did they refill drinks or let us know just how much of a wait for food it would have been. Had we known it was that long we would've left. My drink was never refilled. Eventually they came out with some bread and then 30 minutes later our food. All In all the experience was terrible and the food was just okay. read more

Every single time without a miss, this place hits the spot. The hospitality, lighting, and sunset views, and let's not forget the AMAZING dishes, all make this place incredible and so worth it. I recently visited and had incredible service with Therese (I apologize if I misspelled her name). She was so sweet and warm, and truly made our dining experience incredible :) We make the 45 minute drive without fail every single time. I had a lemon drop martini that was absolutely FABULOUS!! Sonny's is delicious and affordable. The wait for 4 on a Saturday night was around one hour. The atmosphere is great for families or dates. One entree dish was more than enough for each person. We personally enjoyed the Vegetarian Lasagna (great flavor profile) and the Homemade Gnocchi with Pesto Cream Sauce (perfectly chewy and filled with cheese). The shrimp that we added as an extra protein were small in size and not flavorful - that's the only thing I'd switch out next time. Went here wet a group of 7 and pretty much allof us were super disappointed. This place use to be really good years ago and then they went cheap on their ingredients. Pasta is horrible. Not sure if it was after Covid or what. Their sauce use to be great and now they use cottonseed oil and fish oil in their sauce. Cottonseed is the lowest grade oil use can use. What Italian restaurant uses that over olive oil. What a disgrace we will never go back and this sauce is going in the trash. UPDATE: Thank you for responding and addressing this issue of an incorrect label. 90% olive oil s better than none. Would be best if you guys switch to 100% olive oil since canola is not great because it's inflammatory seed oil. I'll update the rating and will update further when you change label. read more
