If you're looking for a fun outdoor spot to hang with friends and have (DC's version of) affordable, good eats + drinks, Sonny's is perfect for that. The Caesar salad was standard and fresh, with yummy garlicky croutons. The cider I ordered was delicious and unlike any I've had before. And the pizza was good! Not the best I've ever had, but better than other DC pizza places. I like Sicilian/square pizza so this worked for me, but if you're more into thin pizza or like crust, maybe skip it. Huge portions though so that's great! They seem to be super busy and understaffed at the moment so service was lacking, but would be happy to go back. read more

A nice addition to the neighborhood: a chill spot for pizza and pizza-adjacent Italian favorites. I like that you can get pizza by the slice (2 is a good meal) or by the whole pie (8 slices, which they say feeds 3-4 people). Both meat and veggie options are available. I had pepperoni (lots of pepperoni, which was nice and spicy) and sausage & peppers (kind of light on peppers, which was fine, but the sausage wasn't particularly flavorful). I wasn't sure quite what to expect in terms of crust based on other reviews but I really liked it: somewhat crispy but not wholly cracker-y, so the toppings keep it appropriately soft. Love the broiled-kind-of cheese pieces melted on the crispy parts of the edges, which were firm enough to hold the slices up and eat by hand. When I stopped in for a quick early (545/6p) dinner on a Sunday, it seemed popular with families with young children, some of whom took food to go and some of whom sat on the back patio. It wasn't crowded, though, and service was pretty quick, at least for by-the-slice orders. I'll definitely be back when a pizza craving strikes. read more

I celebrated my birthday at Sonny's Pizza this past Friday night. I was able to make a reservation through the website for a large party (22 of us) and they were super friendly and easy to work with! We had three tables reserved for us which was plenty of space and even though it was a busy night, whenever we needed anything they were quick to help us! The pizza garden is such a chill and open area definitely great for a group. We ended up charging all the pizza on one tab and then everyone was able to grab their drinks individually at the no kisses cocktail bar! It worked out really well. We ordered a ton of pizza and everyone LOVED it! Super filling and delicious! Can't wait to visit again! Def recommend this spot. read more

I genuinely loved everything about Sonny's. I came in with a few friends on a Sunday evening and we grabbed a table at the back patio. We got meatballs, mushroom slices, and a sausage& pepperoni pizza. The grandma pizza itself is so good. It's crunchy and has a great yeasty rise and the dough itself has awesome texture and flavor. The best part is the edges, because they have crunchy, lacy, melty cheese around them. I also thought the toppings & cheese-sauce ratios were great, and that the sauce itself was nicely sweet. The meatballs were also awesome (one friend said he wanted to lick the plate). The service and atmosphere are also just so lovely. I love their wine selections -- simple and good and perfect with the pizza. The patio is quiet and a nice place to hang out. The cashier who took my order was friendly and also helped me out when I asked for reheating instructions. All in all, Sonny's is awesome and I can't wait to return! read more

Great neighborhood spot! I came here with a friend after a Friday happy hour at a nearby beer garden to get some food before ending our night. It was busy but not overly crowded. We split a carafe of wine and a few slices and Sonnys did not disappoint! The mushroom slice was my favorite (big mushroom fan). It is "grandma" style slices so if you don't like that kind of pizza, it may not be for you. They do have things besides pizza on the menu and the sandwiches looked very good. The pizza came out hot and was crispy on the bottom, great! The ambiance was really nice in the restaurant as well, would be a great date spot. We sat at the bar and had plenty of space. After eating we went through the attached No Kisses bar to check it out and the back patio. The patio is the same space used by Colony Club. It was much more crowded outside the restaurant than inside, also very cute. read more

The pizza is very good, but the ordering process left a bad taste in my mouth. I placed my order over the phone for a carry out order. My friends picked up the pizza and my receipt reflected a 20% gratuity. I found that strange since no one stated that would be the case when I called. I called back to find out why the gratuity was added without notifying me and they stated that 20% is applied to all orders for a shared tip pool. Maybe I'm old school, but I don't generally tip like that for carry out orders. That's selling food, but it's not serving food. No one is clearing any tables or dishes, refilling drinks, or even delivering the food with a carry out order, so I don't understand what that level of gratuity is for. It would have been ok if it was stated prior to them putting the order in or on the website, but to charge an additional 20% "tip" when no service is being rendered seems like price gouging. Edit: their website says that 20% will be applied to all dine in or orders processed through the website, but neither of those applied in this situation. It's not a huge deal, but I would have appreciated more transparency about the policy when I called. Great pizza either way. read more

I will save you some time- this pizza is not good. Disappointingly bad. 1) The pizza is burned on the bottom. It is not crisped, but actually blackened/charred in a way that leaves a burnt taste. 2) The pizza is soggy in the middle. There is too much moisture content in the sauce and the pizza is wet. 3) The pizza is overpriced. There are a number of excellent $30 pizzas in DC, but Sonny's is not worth this price. For a much better local option, Timber is close by. For an excellent Detroit-style pie in the $30 range try Side Door. read more

We never intended to eat here until we realized that the outdoor patio we went for a drink at No Kisses was basically an extension of Sonny's. As I mentioned in the No Kisses review, the shared back patio is quintessentially Sonny's even though it's a shared space. Since all the tables have Sonny's menu, and the converted Citröen minibus that you order from only takes Sonny's orders. Not to mention the general Italian vibe of Peroni umbrellas and Pomodoro cans used as napkin holders on each table. That being said, I will preface - we never actually stepped foot in the indoor location - so I can only speak to the space, food, and service on the patio. Space - awesome. The patio is big and inviting. Food - awesome. We first ordered the Meatball & Ricotta appetizer thinking we wouldn't be staying for dinner, but 3 drinks later we ended up staying. And the meatballs were so good, I decided to get the Meatball Sandwich as my dinner. The meatballs were flavorful and tender. The sauce well-balanced. And the focaccia is pretty solid, although I prefer it crispier. My wife got the Mixed Green Salad and a slice of Pepperoni Pizza. The pizza is good. It's like Sicilian style, except thin crust. I love pizzas that aren't doughy and have a good even ratio of crust/cheese/topping and Sonny's definitely has that balance ratio. No skimping on toppings here! You order from the minibus which is super cool, where the line never became overwhelming even though the place was packed. From Buffalo, I think DC pizza is generally pretty terrible. This place, however, was pretty awesome. It's a thinner crust that chars on the outside and it's really tasty. A lot of ppl complaining about the burnt crust, but (I think) a lot of people like it that way (myself included). Have gone back a couple times since going the first time and will be back. The place also has a decent selection of beer and a back bar, which I have not tried. read more

I walked in on a Wednesday night after a few drinks and grabbed 4 slices to go and a a beer for the waiting time and I was not impressed. 1. The most important thing! Serve a slice that you'd eat! If it's been sitting out for a certain. Period of time you need to get rid of it or if thats not the case and that's just how your dough is then you need to proof it a bit longer. 2. You're gunning to be a local neighborhood joint with good pie and drinks. Serve your beer in a chilled glass and be proud of what you do! 3. They haven't worked on the recipe enough. The ingredients aren't all going well together. It's not the right type of sausage for the type of sauce. 4. They haven't gotten their pricing and product right. They need to work on getting some combos. With beer and a slice or something and please don't be charging upwards of 30$ for a pie! Nobody wants to eat at a slow pizza shop where the slices have been sitting around all day. 5. Overall opened prematurely, lots of tweaking to do and has great potential. read more

I give this place a 6/10. I ordered the pepperoni pizza with red onions, not realizing red onion came on the pizza, so that was my mistake. The sauce is good and the mozzarella is good. This has been my favorite pizza spot in DC so far. The slices are done in a thick square style but without actually being thick. The toppings are delicious with a nice burnt crisp to pepperonis and if you go the whole pie route it reheats in the oven to be almost as good as it originally was. I haven't tried any sandwiches yet but I'll report back when I do. I've seen a lot of negative reviews regarding the price, and if you want the most bang for your buck go hit up a jumbo slice. I loved the flavors of the ridico and crispy chewy crust. But I was sweating, chugging water, and kind of getting lightheaded. I like spice, but this was borderline inedible. I enjoy grandma-style pies, but this was mediocre (and quite pricey). Got the cheese with some toppings. The main thing that needs work is the dough. It's deflated from what I'd expect and tough to chew (insufficient second rise?). The bottom could also be crisped more; it got soggy in the pan they serve it on. Grandma-style at Wiseguy on Mass Ave is tastier every which way. Didn't try the other offerings (salads, sandwiches, etc.) so can't advise on those, but wouldn't come back until the pizzas improve significantly. read more

I'm so surprised this place only has 3.5 stars! This is a great, casual spot for a bite to eat with some friends. I've been here a couple times now, after checking out No Kisses next door (same owner as Colony Club), and the food is SO good every time! The eggplant parmesan sandwich is definitely my favorite item - huge serving, and I love the sesame seeds they put on top of the [made in house!] focaccia. The pizza is also great and unique with the Sicilian-inspired slices. I'll usually go for the mushroom slice, unless they have their special (onions and arugula), which is really tasty. I wasn't disappointed by this 'za in the slightest. I'm not usually a sauce person but their tomato sauce was so flavorful! I am, however, a totaI crust gal and the crispy bottom of the dough made it for me. I see a lot of posts about the burnt edges but it seemed intentional and gives it extra flavor and crispiness. I also love that I it's such a casual atmosphere amongst so many fancy pants establishments in the area. Since this square pizza is a type of pizza I haven't attempted to try to make before/not too common in the DC area, I would recommend this place for people who haven't tried before. My first experience with Sonny's pizza was 6 stars, as it was heavenly, but after last evening, I could not believe that it came from the same pizza oven. My fiancé ordered a pizza while we were at Hook Hall for delivery via DoorDash and when it arrived we agreed that the taste was totally off, it tasted acrid and sour. I'll start by saying the staff was very friendly. I always say the same thing about DC pizza: while we have some quality upscale fork-and-knife spots, we can't seem to nail the casual counter-order pie. Sonny's does not fill that void. The interior suggests the latter, although the prices do not. It's not terribly expensive, just a little more than what you'd expect to pay when you order at the counter and seat yourself. I guess this Shaw trope has made its way up to Parkview. I ordered a whole wolfie pizza, which they accurately claim is enough for 3-4 people, garlic knots, and a single class of red wine for $58. The garlic knots were practically inedible, they were so tough. On the pizza, it seems like they're going for an almost focaccia-like crust. They managed to nail down a dough that's both soggy with oil, and difficult to chew. That's tough to do, folks. I'll chalk this place up as another fork-and-knife pizza joint because you literally have to eat it with a fork and knife. It's so wet and tough, there's just no way you're getting through that without making a mess. read more

I really wanted to give this place a better star rating given the awesome staff, great beer selection, and solid happy hour special. The patio area is also nice. Unfortunately, the pizza was average at best. They need to use more sauce as the slices were rather dry. The "special" pizza had some sort of salami which tasted a tad bit funky. I'm not the biggest fan of meat on my pizza, but my wife felt the same way. Food: 4 Carry-out service: 1 Price: 3 The pizza was good, though a bit salty. Definitely a different pizza style than I've had before, but it was good and I'd definitely have it again. I had two issues: 1) Price. I got a Wolfie, which is a $32 pizza. That's an expensive pizza! It easily serves 4-6 people, but there's only 1 size whole pie so if you're ordering carry out and want a whole pizza even for 2 people, that's the option. I guess we'll have leftovers. Beyond that, though, I asked to sub out the peppers for mushrooms. Usually when you sub an ingredient that's the same price, there's no charge, but they charged me $4, bringing the total to $36... for a pizza. I actually realized that if I had built the pizza from scratch rather than ordering it the way I did, I would have saved $1. Very annoying. 2) I ordered carry out on a Saturday at 7, so I expected it to be busy when I picked it up. What sucked is that they only have 1 line for people placing orders and picking up! I waited 15 minutes just to pay and grab an order that was already ready and getting less fresh by the minute. They need a second register for carry out orders. We usually order pizza for carry out, so considering the massive one-size-only pizza and the super inefficient carry out situation, we probably won't order from there again, but we will hit it up sometime again to eat-in. read more
