Went to Sonny's for dinner tonight & left less than thrilled. The pizza "slice" came out cold, the small house salad was extremely boring, and the eggplant Parmesan sandwich was mostly all breading - struggled to find existence of eggplant (extremely thin slice - like they are rationing eggplant? Or did they order one eggplant for the week and have to stretch it out?) We did complain that the slice of mushroom pizza was cold and they were gracious to bring out another slice that was really warm (made a BIG difference). We didn't drink anything there but noticed that happy hour wine cost $7. SMDH. Many people have said this in their reviews but it's worth foot stomping: this place has potential but needs major tweaking to last. read more

This pizza is not good. The crust is crunchy and not in a good way. It's not even that the pizza was burnt, but the crust feels like cardboard. The cheese and pepperoni are ok but covered in grease. Was excited to try Sonny's based on a recommendation from a friend. There were 3 of us so we ordered a large Caesar salad, meatball starter, garlic knots, and a whole pie. The salad was fine, meatball was pretty good (best thing we ate), knots were dense, and the pizza had zero flavor and the crust got soggy quickly. Overall, thought this was super overpriced for what it was - we paid $100 for what was meant to be a casual meal. A good idea, but failed on execution. My friends were hungover and wanted pizza, so we went to Sonny's. I will note that one of my friends is from New Jersey, has (rightfully) high standards for pizza, and suggested we go here. The slices are square but kind of thin, so I got 2 mushroom. It was objectively good, the cheese pulls really well and the crust has a really satisfying crunch, but I found it a bit over priced ($4 per slice, and a whole mushroom pizza would be $30, so you're only saving $2 bucks if you got the whole pie.) We also split an order of garlic knots, which were also on the smaller size. The cheese and toppings on the pizza are great, but I found the sauce to be super heavy on the garlic. Which is great if you like garlic, but I found it way too overpowering. The taste is masked by the cheese and the pizza, but I tried the sauce plain before we dipped the garlic knots in there (control variable) and all of us agreed that the garlic was a bit too strong. I'll be back, because the white-people-watching here is as good as it gets. read more

My favorite pizza in the city. Love the brioche pizza crust; it is not too thick and nice and crispy. For best experience, eat in-person and order pizza by the slice. Also extremely affordable at about $4 a slice; two slices usually fills me up, 3 if I'm really hungry. Also love the ambience, fun vibes, and great outdoor seating. Fun fact, sometimes I go here after eating at a different restaurant in dc that is overpriced and didn't fill me up. I've been to Buddy's Pizza in Detroit and I definitely get what Sonny's is trying to do, but it's just not quite there. Solid pizza for sure in an area that's desperate for anything resembling pizza, but it's a couple steps away from being a destination spot. I'm fine with the price because 3 people can definitely share a pie, but they need to get the crust fluffier and the cheese richer. I really want to like this place and I will improve my review score if there is any kind of change to either the pizza quality (dough), prices, or if they offer some kind of happy hour or combo special for drinks/slices. I've been here two times for beer and slices. Since the small-sized pepperoni slice is nearly $5 a slice after tax and the beers (even Hamm's) are marked up slightly, I consider this place as an occasional treat more than a regular hangout. The first time here, my slice was pretty fresh out of the oven and I was definitely satisfied. The crust was just crunchy enough but also soft inside. Left happy. My second time here with a friend, we tried 3 slices - pepperoni, sausage and mushroom - and the slices were rock hard and I could barely finish them. The dough recipe is not amenable to sitting out and then being reheated, it was like a thick, hard, completely crunchy consistency and they weren't even reheated all that much. The sausage also didn't mesh well with the type of sauce. After spending over $15 for 3 small slices plus tip, I was disappointed. It just wasn't good, and either the dough recipe needs to be worked out, or they need to charge less for old slices that have hardened after sitting out. Based on other reviews, this seems like a common issue. The place is beautiful, patio is awesome, the No Kisses bar is really nice inside. I love hanging out here. But the slices need to be reworked a bit and it's a little too pricey to be a regular hangout spot for me (I know most trendy people in DC don't mind spending more than me), especially with no apparent combo or happy hour deals. I want this place to succeed, it's always good to fill in what were formerly vacant places on Georgia Ave with cool new restaurants, so I hope they can better meet the neighborhood's vibe and tweak some things. read more

First drawn to Sonny's by its retro sign, I wasn't quite sure when it exactly opened, but I'm glad it has now! Great to have nice slices, which allow one to construct an economical meal, if desired. I am now adding this pizza place at the top of my best pizza places in the DMV along with my Kensington favorite, Frankly Pizza. Glad we're getting more food options down this way, but the pricing on the full pizzas is just ridiculous. "Yes..." as everyone has said, the pizzas are quite large, but if you're a couple splitting a single pie, you're basically paying around $38 for ONE PIZZA if you include tax and tip. They have a rewards card, which is well-intentioned, but you'd have to spend around $250-280 on a mere 8 pizzas to get a magical 9th one free. Now compare that to somewhere like Timber Pizza, just up the road, where you can get two whole pizzas for less than one at Sonny's. All that being said, the pizza itself was definitely good and they didn't hold back on toppings. The Happy Hour deals actually seem far better if you can suffice on just a couple slices to hold you over. I believe it was $10 for two slices and a cheap beer. In addition, folks should note that as of early May, they do not take orders over the phone. It sounds like that will change eventually. But for me, that meant walking 10 - 15 minutes to the restaurant, waiting another 10 minutes in line due to the single register and no wait staff, and then another 30+ or so on the pizza itself. I knew this going in--so I'm not taking off any rating because of them being new and probably just wanting to get their methods squared away--but I just don't know how you can compete with someone like Timber, where you can order ahead, pick it up without awkwardly waiting around, and end up getting more pizza for less. In short, the pizza is good, but it's not $38-for-a-whole-pie good. I've had some fancy pizza in my days, but I don't think any have ever been over $30. Just seems like you should be getting the ultimate pizza when you get to the $35+ realm. But Sonny's isn't even the best tasting in Petworth. I'll happily revisit and update if they change their prices OR at least offer varying sizes of pizzas (currently it's just: by the slice or one big $32 pre-tax/tip pizza). read more

I have never written a bad review on Yelp. I am not a picky eater. I love pizza. I ordered the pizza don, and it was the worst pizza I've ever had. There was so much arugula, it was like a lawn. It smelled disgusting. It tasted like something had gone bad, maybe the meat. It was soggy. (Even after we re-cooked it, it tasted horrible.) I've ordered delivery regularly since COVID closed things down, and I don't think that was the issue. I feel guilty leaving a bad review, especially with current conditions for restaurants, but I think it's important to provide honest feedback for others who might consider ordering here and to the restaurant. read more

Sonny's was delicious, friendly, and a great space! I briefly checked out No Kisses and the back patio while waiting for my friend - both adorable. The staff at Sonny's were kind and courteous, and the food came out fast. The pizza was AMAZING! Exceeded my (high) expectations. We got the sausage and peppers and the pepperoni. The Caesar was huge (even the small) and garlicky. The knots were just okay - I wanted them to be fluffier and/or greasier a la Wiseguy's take, but still very good. LOVE this place. This has become my favorite pizza in DC. I get that it's not for everyone as the style is a bit unique. It's not your neapolitan pizza that DC loves so much. But the crust is nice and chewy and the pepperoni are cut with varying thickness which adds to the deliciousness. It's not cheap, but a little goes a long way. It's tasty. I don't eat meat so my options are limited but I did try the mushroom and also their arugula onion special . Out of the two I preferred the arugula onion. The mushroom was not bad but kinda bland. I'd probably go back to get the arugula but def would have been disappointed if I bought a whole pie. One slice is good . The Salad had to much dressing ask for it on the side !! Over it's not bad the vibe is chill and I'd come back. I haven't found a pizza place in DC I love but I would tie this with red rocks. I can't stand timber pizza. So that just to give you an idea on my taste buds. I'd go back more so for the ambiance, a slice, and a glass of wine. It's a chill spot. Only reason it got 4 stars is that the pizza could have been hotter. But it's wasn't hard or undercooked. Seems like they worked out the kinks. The pizza crust is entirely too soggy. So soggy, we could barely lift it because it kept plopping back down onto the plate in the weight of its goop. The actual pepperoni pieces of meat were great and the red sauce was good, so the pizza does have some potential. I've been here a few times with a friend of mine who lives nearby. And I totally understand why she comes here so frequently....it's amazing. The staff treat you like family. Cody the manager is always available for a joke and an Allagash White. The pizza itself has a nice crispy crust and the pepperoni is crispy almost blackened on top. The special slice that is sometimes available is wicked good. Fair warning though the chili oil can be drizzled heavily so have a drink close by. Love that you can take the pizza into the bar, No Kisses, next door. Definitely worth a look as well. Not to mention the outdoor patio in the summer which can be crowded but so nice on a nice night. All in all it's so nice to support this local place. Just be prepared for it to be crowded on Friday or Saturday nights. read more

I placed an order to-go through the online system on Easter Sunday. I arrived early at the restaurant to pick up my order (since they did not give me an option on what time i wanted to pick up), and asked the girl at the cash/counter if it was possible for it to be ready prior to my 20 minute wait time, as I was only ordering two slices of pizza. She said "oh yeah of course it will be out soon". I waited for 13 minutes before I asked "hey any update on time" and she said again "yeah yeah it'll be ready soon". You'd think she would have gone back in the kitchen when I arrived and again when I asked, but no. She didn't give two "ships" about anything that was going on and had no interest in the restaurant patrons, she never went to communicate my request to the kitchen so it was prepared in the 20 minute time frame they originally gave me. When I asked again after 19 minutes "hey im just wondering whats taking so long" she got a little annoyed and said again "it'll be out soon" and then my pizza came out right then and she said "see there you go" all defensive. I said thanks, can I have some plastic cutlery and napkins, I kid you not, she THREW them at me no joke! And when I chose not to engage with her petty behavior, she LAUGHED as I left the restaurant. Extremely unprofessional. It's too bad. Their pizza tastes really good. Nevertheless, I will never give them my business again because of the rude cashier/counter girl. read more

Sonny's is okay. The food is pricey for the quality and quantity (~$4 for a small square of pizza, my crust was tasteless and too crunchy). It doesn't really live up to the hype, but it's nicely decorated (if a bit loud with the minimalist decor) and conveniently located. The layout is a bit confusing, I think you can sit in the back patio but it's unclear if you have to go around through the no kisses bar or what, there doesn't seem to be a door to the patio in the actual restaurant. It's still kind of new so maybe they'll figure things out a bit. read more

I will probably come here occasionally, but like Call Your Mother the prices are too high for it to be a regular neighborhood spot, even though that is exactly what it is supposed to be. I'm not sure what the thinking is with these spots that they need to extract so much from their customers. I would think they would do better with being on the higher end for a neighborhood spot but still within the realm of fair for what is offered. I just came back from here after seeing the hype and I fully agree, if you can afford it. I got a slice of mushroom and a slice of pepperoni, both were absolutely delicious and quite filling. The bread was sturdy enough to hold the toppings but had a softness about it. Whatever they used to cook it, gave some edges a nice burnt crunch. The sauce was very good, a little sweet and just the right amount. I was happy to see a shaker for both red pepper flakes and basil at the table. A whole pizza is going to run about $30-$35, a slice is about $4, and the sandwiches about $10-$12. This is definitely a cool little spot and I'll be going back to try a sandwich, the costs just add up. The staff was lovely and pretty much just left you alone unless you needed anything.
