First time here and it was such a perfect spot whether you're coming with your girls or your partner! Our server Paulo was incredibly kind and honestly made the whole experience a 10/10. We were also checked on by other servers throughout the night so the overall service was just *chef's kiss*. Paulo gave great recommendations too. We saw the large shell pasta on Yelp but weren't really planning to order it but he convinced us to try it and he was absolutely right. Food was delicious and the drinks were even better. I got the Chiaro and it barely tasted like alcohol which was dangerous in the best way. Loved the food, the drinks, and the whole vibe. Try the tiramisu too, it's amazing. Already want to come back!

Sono is the most recent italian venture to take over this corner (which seems to be cursed with all the turnover). However, Sono seems to be the most impressive and popular so far! With its extremely artistic aesthetic and robust menu, this spot seems here to stay. We came here during sunset on a weekend it was quite busy. Something that really stood out was how many staff members came and checked on us. They definitely have a healthy staff count and you'll never be left alone with empty plates for too long. The food was pretty good! We enjoyed our wine & spritz. The caesar salad had a ton of Parmesan (just how i like it) and the greens were super fresh. My friend enjoyed her papardelle. My spaghetti pomodoro was just average. It was definitely good but no different from what you can get in a grocery store. I would love to see them add more veggie options like Cacio e Pepe, Pesto, etc. It would make me more likely to visit again. Overall this spot is definitely worth a try!

Delicious! I loved everything we ordered at Sono. First off, the Fuoco (tequila drink with Tajin) was delicious. Leo served us and he was very tentative and made sure our table was always clear for the next drink or dish. The only issue I had with this drink was as the fact he suggested a different liquor, but wasn't transparent there'd be an up-charge which was unusual. I've never been to a restaurant where they don't tell you right off the bat and in the future, we'd appreciate that transparency. We ordered a couple of pasta dishes, the potato croquette, a salad and the flat iron steak. My favorite pasta was their special that night (a short rib rigatoni pasta), but the large shell pasta was also delicious. We added guanciale which added flavor, but made the dish a bit too salty in my opinion. Overall, the ambiance is definitely there at Sono. Great spot for a date night or pre-drinks/dinner before a show/night out. I'd like to come back and try more dishes on the menu, so I do hope it's here to stay.

Loved this new hotspot! Not only was everything we tried delicious but the service was top notch! I am counting the days to come back with my bf since it was a hit with my book club girls. We shared a few items and bottles of wine. The cocktails were also delicious. Save some room for dessert, and the vibe was picture perfect as well. Only knocked off a star because we did feel rushed and the music was really loud.

Wow, the Italian food scene in SD just keeps getting better! Sono is a top tier addition to North Park! They're the new kids on the block serving up modern Italian dishes. Their branding and space are superrrr aesthetic. Tons of photo ops here! We got their Polpo Croccante to start along with four pasta dishes to try: Conchiglioni Piccanti, Rigatoni Bolognese Bianca, Pappardelle Cinghiale, and Casarecce Amatriciana. There wasn't a single miss. We were amazed with every bite! The pasta was fresh and cooked perfectly. The sauces were savory, thoughtfully balanced, and absolutely delish! Every plate was scraped CLEAN. We will 1000% be back to eat our way through the rest of the menu.

We had a pre-show dinner here before heading over to the Observatory. We went in the early evening and the ambiance was very moody and intimate. I think it'd be even better once the sun fully goes down, so if you can, go a bit later in the evening. Our server Paulo was very kind and attentive. My husband loved the prawn risotto, and the limoncello shots at the end were a really nice touch. Solid date night spot!

I'm so happy this spot finally got a full makeover -- it's now a cool, dark, moody modern Italian restaurant and bar, and honestly, I think this concept might actually stick. This property has been so many things over the years, but this one feels intentional, stylish, and like it truly belongs in North Park. We came for an anniversary dinner right at opening (5 PM). The host was friendly, let us choose our seating, and there were so many great options it was hard to pick. I love the pops of red, the cheetah print, the mid‑century touches, and the Italian‑themed poster art. It all comes together beautifully. Our server was warm and checked on us often. The menu is definitely pork‑forward, so our options were a bit limited, but everything still sounded delicious. We ordered the short rib croquettes, Caesar salad, the white pesto wagyu pasta, and the special of the night -- a short rib with truffle cream sauce. Food and drinks came out quickly. They offer wine, beer, and a few cocktails, plus a solid happy hour at the bar with good drink deals. Entrées are on the pricier side, but that's expected for a modern Italian spot. Every dish was flavorful, rich, and generously portioned. The standout was the short rib rigatoni -- creamy, perfectly cooked, and incredibly satisfying. We each ate half our pastas and were stuffed. They also thoughtfully boxed our leftovers and surprised us with a little treat for our anniversary, which we really appreciated and enjoyed. Such a sweet touch. Overall, Sono feels like a great addition to the neighborhood -- stylish, cozy, and serving genuinely delicious food. I'd definitely come back for a special occasion, a birthday, or even a casual happy hour with friends.

Trendy new spot in North Park with cool ambiance inside. Easy reservations on Open Table and it was super busy on a Friday night. The service was great and the vibes were on point but the food was just average. The drinks were hit or miss. The mocktail with strawberry and foam started out fun and good first few foamy sips but then was too sweet and syrupy. The Dorado cocktail got better when the ice melted, it was a bit thick initially but not bad. My pasta Casarecce Amitriciana was a great portion but sauce was too acidic and noodles were inconsistently cooked (some al dente some much softer). My friends risotto with shrimp was delicious though. There's better Italian food in San Diego but this is a cool spot to hang.

Ambiance is wonderful, great for hanging out with friends or date night! The service is awesome too, the workers are constantly checking in to make sure that the food is good. The drinks are super super strong, def recommended haha The shells for one of the dishes was undercooked, and the cacio e pepe flavor did not come through for that, but it was still good regardless! The wagyu related pasta is really good tho!

This tiramisu is the best tiramisu I've ever tried wow the presentation... it had vanilla ice cream and the mascarpone is the creamiest fluffiest thing that's graced my mouth. The coffee flavor also so rich. Everything about it... I need it again my love Vodka pasta + toast with meat & cheese, got zero complaints! Came here for the ambience, it's hard to find a place with both good food & ambience. Usually one is lacking. This restaurant satisfactory in both. Service is also very friendly

so thankful to have been invited to eat here. we started off with non alcoholic dolce amaros which were def on the sweet side but it tasted like an elevated sparkling strawberry lemonade :) i appreciate that the cream top wasn't too heavy the cazzilli di brasto was sooo crispy it reminded me of hash browns and i loved the hint of truffle the conchiglioni piccanti was soliddd. the large shell pasta was so fun, i wish they had cooked it just a tad bit longer tho. the vodka sauce was flavorful and yummy esp w the chili flakes i liked the pappardelle a little bit more bc it was more al dente and the meat was SOOO tender and flavorful. the tomato base also added a nice tart taste the tiramisu was solidddd too i loved how creamy it was and they had a little scoop of chocolate ice cream on top. the chocolate cake was a little dry tho, but it was a unique twist the servers were also so incredibly nice and interior was beautifullll, amazing spot for your next date :) thankful to be a foodie and if im ever back in sd i will come back

Our friend wanted to try out Sono for his birthday dinner, so we booked a reservation on OpenTable on a Tuesday evening. I realized I had been to this location before, but another business was occupying this spot. We'll see if Sono stays around! - PARKING - Street parking around adjacent roads - we got lucky and found a spot right on the corner. Note any time limitations/rules! - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - They redecorated the interior but kept the layout basically the same. I wasn't sure if my memory was failing me but I don't think they had a lifted area in the front where tables are now. We were guided to a 4-top table right next to the bar; I wouldn't say it was cramped but some parts of the layout you'd have to let someone pass by before walking. Service was OK - at times we'd have to wait to try and wave someone down. They also ran out of 2 of 3 desserts so we ended up just going to an ice cream shop next door. - FOOD - Cazzilli di Brasato ($22.00): 2 pieces. The croquettes were nicely fried and had good flavor. Polpo Croccante ($24.00): I almost laughed out loud when this was set down at our table. I've had single tentacles served as an octopus appetizer at other restaurants before, but the size of this was just absurd, also considering the price. It was so skinny and small, I could probably fit it in the palm of my hand. It was nicely presented with the coulis and purees (which also tasted good), but I just couldn't believe the portion size. Conchiglioni Piccanti ($28.00): I immediately knew I wanted to try this one as not many places serve large shell pasta. The flavors of the nduja paste and pink sauce melded well and the cacio e pepe mousse calmed the heat a bit. The shell pasta was cooked perfectly al dente as well. My favorite of the night! Casarecce Amatriciana ($25.00): I really wanted to try their guanciale but didn't want to pay an additional $10 for protein, and this pasta already included it so we decided to try it out. The guanciale was nicely salty and savory as we'd hoped, but the tomato sauce was a bit too much on the sour side. The casarecce wasn't as well cooked as the Conchiglioni either. - OVERALL - Definitely a pricier spot for Italian food, but the flavors are decent here. Some of the pizzas piqued my interest but I'll hold off on coming back until another friend wants to try Sono.

Wow what an amazing dinner experience at Sono! Everything was delicious -- from the wine and cocktails (I ordered an aperol spritz and my friend ordered red wine) to the pasta -- it was all absolutely well made and high quality. Our server Molly was so helpful and cool as we were deciding what to order. We also loved the vibe of the restaurant with a mix of table and bar seats. Don't miss out on the rigatoni , it is SO good. Can't wait to come back and try the pizzas!

This place is new in North park and did not disappoint! We came on a Wednesday right at 5 pm for HH at the bar. The bartenders were very friendly and the happy hour was such a good price. My friend and I split a pizza and Caesar salad and both were delicious! I'll have to come back for actual dinner as they have a large menu and it looked really good! read more

My best friend and I don't get to see each other often, so when we do, we make it count, especially with a nice dinner out. Since I recently moved to the area, we were excited to try Sono in North Park. Unfortunately, the experience left a lot to be desired. It started at the door. The host was unwelcoming and had a noticeably cold attitude. When we asked to be seated somewhere more private (we'd been placed right at the front in the stage, very exposed), she dismissed us with saying "nobody's looking at you," which felt rude and dismissive. Not the welcome you hope for at a new restaurant. The service throughout the night had a similar vibe. The staff seemed inexperienced and a bit unpolished, which is understandable for a newer spot, but it showed. On the food side, it was a mixed bag. I have a gluten allergy and they were attentive about that, which I appreciated. But my pasta came out noticeably undercooked, not al dente, genuinely hard to bite. When I brought it up, I was brushed off with the al dente excuse. It tasted great otherwise, but that's a miss. My friend ordered an octopus dish that was listed on Yelp with three pieces and she received one. At that price point, that's a significant discrepancy from what was advertised. I also ordered a cocktail and I'm pretty certain it came out as a mocktail. I rarely drink, so when I do, I notice immediately. My friend doesn't drink, so I wonder if there was a mix up with our orders that never got corrected. By the end of the night, our waiter seemed visibly annoyed with our concerns, which made an already uncomfortable evening feel worse. I really wanted to love this place. The food has potential, and I hope they grow into better service. But as it stands, I don't see myself returning. read more

I absolutely loved this place!! The food, service, & ambiance were all amazing! As soon as you walk inside the vibe is just so fun and modern and trendy with dark lighting but lots of fun designs. The host was so great! We didn't have a reservation and she told us to sit at the bar until she could clear a table for us. The bar tenders were super fun and friendly while we were waiting for our table and once we finally got seated our server broke down the whole menu and share popular items as well as his favorites. The food arrived quickly and oh my goodness!! I think it was some of the best pasta I've ever had! It was perfectly cooked, well seasoned, such a unique twist with the short rib finely chopped and added into the sauce as well as the pistachios in the pesto. I still this about this pasta all the time. The pizza was also amazing! It was like a classic meat lovers but with a twist!! So soo good!! read more

Wow! Every part of this experience was amazing and I can't remember the last time I said that about a restaurant. Paolo was so great to us and had the best recommendations and made sure we really loved everything. I can honestly say this is the best food and drink I've had in a long time. Mikey was incredible at the bar and we had the pleasure of meeting Ocean, the owner, and she was incredibly lovely. The happy hour is great. Their red wine was great on the happy hour menu (and we can be harsh critics for that). It's giving NY Italian diner but upscale and vibey and we were VERY into it. When I realized what space Sono moved into, I was skeptical. However, they did a beautiful job of rehabbing the place. Modern, clean, well lit and inviting. The food is exceptional and unique. And the cocktail and wine selection was icing on the cake. The service was friendly and efficient. I never made it to dessert but that will be my next goal when I go. So excited. read more

Really loved Sono! My boyfriend and I did a date night here and were pleasantly surprised. The drinks, croquettes, and soppressata pizza were delish! We also got the lobster pasta and while it was good we felt the pasta lacked a little flavor. However, we still enjoyed it! Our server was Molly and she was soooo incredibly sweet! Food was soooo incredibly good! I feel like there are so many excellent italian restaurants in SD that I was wondering if this would be any different. And yes!! It is!! The Sicilian emphasis is very evident in all the flavors that really made the restaurant stand out!! Loved the vibe. Really fun bar area. Paolo was our server and was absolutely excellent! Dining at Sono in North Park was such a wonderful experience. We enjoyed the grilled octopus, the branzino with green beans and capers, the prosciutto and arugula pizza, beautifully crafted cocktails, and a delicious tiramisu to finish the night. Absolutely loved our girls dinner at Sono in North Park! The vibe was perfect for a night out, and everything we ordered was delicious. We started with the lemon olives, focaccia, and Finocchio e Radicchio salad, then had Casarecce Sono pasta, and ended with the Basque cheesecake, which was an absolute must. So good! My friends and I went in Friday night with a reservation & we were seated very quickly. Our server, Claire, did a fantastic job by recommending the Cazzilli -- it ended up being our favorite dish! She took care of us and really gave us a good first time experience. The pizza was also impeccable. What a fantastic new Italian restaurant in North Park! Stopped by this place last weekend for their grand opening, and they did NOT disappoint. What I saw on the menu: amazing sounding pasta dishes, phenomenal looking pizzas everyone ordered, dope cocktails, and their service and hospitality was absolutely impeccable. The decor of the restaurant is beautiful as well. VIBES ON POINT. I love what North Park is becoming with new spots like this...I will definitely be coming back to Sono very soon! read more

Went here to check out a new spot in the area. Ambiance, food, service was incredible!! Very quiet corner on University Ave in North Park. Drinks were very different but good! Not pictured but we also got the focaccia and cazzilli which we loved and devoured almost immediately! Both pastas were incredible, but the conchiglioni was our favorite! A little bit of a kick but nothing crazy. Pizza crust was very tasty and the potatoes on the pizza were killer! Service staff was very friendly and even moved us tables after we ordered too much food for our little two person table to a spot with more room for everything. I have to start this by saying I had no idea what this restaurant was, but my friend suggested that we went. And I'm not upset about it at all. From start to finish, that was the best service I've ever received. Our waiter, Leo, was an absolute GEM. He got our drinks right away, and suggested a few items on the menu and the specials. We got everything he recommended. Everything was so good, beyond our expectations. Leo was attentive and even brought out a dessert when there was a little mishap with the order. He didn't have to do that because we were so content with the food, but he went above and beyond. His manger, Ocean, came over to make sure everything was going well which we appreciated but we knew we were in good hands with Leo. We didn't send it back because we didn't want to sit there waiting for another entree or waste the food, but it was tough, dry, and not enjoyable to eat at all. The sauce was bland and added nothing to the dish. The potatoes were the only thing worth eating. They also only serve wine and beer, so don't expect cocktails. The only reason this review isn't even lower is because our server was kind, attentive, and did a great job. I've given this restaurant multiple chances over the years, and every visit has been disappointing in one way or another. The ambiance wasn't great either. Between being seated outside in the cold, the noise, and the overall atmosphere, it definitely didn't feel like a place I'd choose for a date night. At this point, I can't justify coming back. There are far too many great Italian restaurants around to spend your money on food that is consistently underwhelming and poorly executed. Food: 3/10 Service: 8.5/10

If Yelp allowed half stars, I'd give Sono a 2.5. Sono is mediocre in a city filled with excellent Italian food for the same price and ambience (if not cheaper). It was clear that most of our food was not freshly made in house. The focaccia was hard, flat, and flavorless. The Caesar salad looked and tasted like it came from Costco. The pasta was previously dried, tasting like it came from a box. The cocktails were a bright spot. The insieme is delicious and unique. The dolce amaro is fun and balanced. I ordered a "seafood special" pasta that the waitress told us about. It is my fault that I didn't ask for the price before ordering, but I was shocked when the bill listed it for $75. The most expensive item on the menu (branzino) is $39. I anticipated the pasta being around $50, especially considering the quality of it. The pasta had minced shrimp in it, therefore I couldn't assess the size or quantity of the shrimp. It came with a small half lobster that was again, obviously cooked from frozen. The lack of freshness made the lobster meat hard to retrieve from the shell. My $75 simply was not on the plate I received. Came her with the girlies last weekend for my birthday because we saw some videos on Tik Tok about how cute this place looked. Oh my god we loooooved the chiq vibe inside!! From the art, to the maroon walls, to the european decor...it is suuuuch a vibe! We requested the CUTEST booth in the restaurant surrounded by old vinyl records and old art, so lovely. Our server Mollie was the sweetest and was soooo attentive. We ordered some appetizers to share, a pasta and a pizza to share, and the Tiramisu for dessert. Everything looked delicious and tasted even BETTER. We had to get some of the cocktails on the menu because we were sitting by the bar and could see how pretty all the cocktails looked so we ordered a couple of the Dolce Amaros and the Fuocos...absolutely divine. They sang happy birthday and everything, what a sweet staff. I will 100% be coming back with the girlies or on date night because the staff and the food/drinks were to die for. I came to this location when it was several other restaurants in the past, but it seems those places weren't popular enough to last. From my experience last week, I think this place will be around for a long time! Italian food done RIGHT. The Casarecce Sono was absolutely exquisite, from the perfect amount of crunch from the pistachios to the perfect balance of saltiness from the sausage and cream. My friend ordered the Pollo dish and I just loved the few bites I had, and I'm definitely planning on getting it next time! We were at the bar so we asked the delightful Stephen to make us a couple of house cocktails...and he did not disappoint because the Chiaro and Dorato were superb. All in all, I will be recommending to ALL of my friends to come check out the place. Sono the newest edition to north park might just be the best thing that has happened to the neighborhood. The ambiance teleports you back to the 1970s Italy. The color scheme chose of burgundy and grey mesh perfectly with the wood slat paneling. Don't even get me started on the top tier service. Right when I walked in the door I was greeted and sat at my table in under 2 minutes. Our waiter Sophia was wonderful. She was very polite and well versed in the menu. We ordered the conchiglioni piccanti and it was some of the best pasta I've had. The nduja added the perfect amount of spice. For dessert we got the tiramisu. Their twist on the traditional dish was to die for. 10/10 would highly recommend for everyone to go in and try. Will be coming again soon! read more

Such a cool ass spot! Came here with my boy on Saturday night and posted up at the bar. Luckily we found some seats at the bar so we snagged those quick because it was busy as hell at the bar. We were quickly greeted by Ashley behind the bar and she made us some phenomenal martinis. Then we ordered a pizza to share. I think we got the Sono pizza because potatoes on pizza sounded amazing...and it was. We ordered a couple more cocktails and even though Ashley was busy, she made them to perfection. I had an excellent time there and will definitely be coming back. probably gotta make a reservation next time because of how busy it gets...guess everyone knows how good this place is getting now. For starters, the ambiance is chic and the music was immaculate! The customer service was impeccable. Our server Pablo really took care of us, he recommended the rigatoni with a black truffle sauce and MY GOODNESS it was delicious. My partner and I cleared our plates. We followed up with the tiramisu. It was an interesting take and I'd definitely order it again, instead of lady fingers they use a chocolate sponge cake and top it with a scoop of gelato. My partner, who isn't a big tiramisu fan, was definitely reaching across the table for a scoop of that yummy goodness. I can't wait to come back and see what their happy hour is all about! Visiting from out of town for work and Sono came up in the algorithm as a new and popular place in town. I'm glad I tried it. As an appetizer I ordered the Polpo (pan-seared Octopus)...it was so tasty! As an entree I had the Covaccino Pizza b/c anything with truffle cream I have to try and I'm glad I did b/c it was PERFECT. The incredibly friendly bartender, Mike, made me the Insieme cocktail on the menu that I really enjoyed...such a smooth and silky drink. Funny guy, too! We had a great experience, and a big part of that was thanks to Mollie! She was so sweet, attentive, and friendly throughout our meal. After a long and stressful week at work, it was really nice to be taken care of by someone who genuinely seemed to enjoy making sure her guests had a good time. Went on their first week open and this group has another hit restaurant on their hands. Service is always spot on and the decor and overall vibe is also on point. Where they are just over the top is on the food....it is phenomenal. If I were to only ever order the octopus appetizer, I would be there daily, but the rest of our meals did not disappoint either.
