Pleasantly surprised with how spacious and how many tables were on the patio! World Cup was on the monitor when we came in. Didn't expect to see a tv on the patio. After the sun went down, candles lit up the tables and the music was on. The hanging lights with the huge murals on the wall gave such a great relaxing chill vibe. Pizzas were bigger than people had described in the reviews. I really enjoyed the generous portion of calamari and the Pepperoni pizza homage to the Ramones. Walked inside to check things out. It had a very East Coast mom and pop vibe from the pictures on the walls to the wooden booths. At night, this could be a cozy date night for two. Made a reservation and quickly we sat down. Water was brought out quickly. Service was slow and lacking by our server. Took a while to get our orders. Server never asked how things were. I noticed how the bussers hustled to turn the tables around and quickly clean tables off. They had Parmesan, red pepper and oregano on the tables! Nice East Coast touch. Sonny's is a trendy, cute pizza spot with a fun ambiance located in University Heights. I happened to come here with my fiance and mom recently while she was in town, and we thought this would be a good place to have an early dinner family style. We arrived right at opening around 4pm on a Wednesday, and got seated right away. We ordered a couple pizzas to share (pineapple express with the vegetarian modification, and the pesto for the people) and calamari. I really enjoyed the pizzas we had- especially pesto for the people because of its truffle burrata. The calamari was also delicious too! I loved how lightly fried it was and it paired so well with the marinara sauce that one container of marinara wasn't enough. My fiance was excited about the vegan bacon they put on the pineapple express. Total bill with tax and tip came out to $70ish and we were pretty full. Note that their pizza sizes are 12'', roughly 6 slices. Each main dish is about $20, give or take a few dollars. Expect a more gourmet pizza experience here vs a hole-in-wall with cheap slices. They also have pasta, salads, and a wide range of appetizers. Parking is pretty easy on off-hours and lots of street parking in general - otherwise weekends and evenings it could get busy. read more

It is really awesome they can do accommodations like half and half, a lot of places are fussy about that. We had great service and the focaccia was delicious! My husband and I tried Sonny's months ago. Just getting around to posting the review. We were early enough to not have to wait for a table and were sat next to the bar. The table for two was tight once the food arrived but we managed. The drink menu is very creative and we had some difficulty deciding what to order. I saw the pizza special included ground beef. I haven't seen ground beef offered since I was on the east coast. Ordered that for nostalgic reasons. The pizza crust was thin like we've had in Connecticut. Sauce was great. The beef had peppers in it which wasn't my favorite. Service was excellent. Décor reminds me of garage hangouts in the 80s. Not mad about it. Parking is a problem though. We tried to go a few additional times but left after not lucking out with a spot in a three block radius. You can make reservations on weekdays for parties of 2-30. read more

Came here for a birthday celebration and for the amount of people we had, they were very accommodating. You don't interact with servers as much since everything is order and pay at the table through a QR code that you scan. The vibe here is super cute and aesthetic. I love every detail of the decor! As for the food, I got a side of potatoes which were an absolute 10/10. I also tried the Rigatoni alla Vodka. The portions are on the smaller side and while the potatoes stood out, the pasta wasn't my favorite. The noodles were cooked well and it had a good amount of sauce, but I think I was expecting a bit more flavor. I'd definitely try something different next time since my expectations were pretty high. This place is literally the best pizza in San Diego. Coming from the east coast, it's been so hard to find pizza that even compares. My partner and I come here at least once per week, and we always order it for delivery as well. It's such a cute atmosphere and we love sitting under the lights outside on the patio. The service is always very good, and the drinks are exceptional. We like the pepperoni and the cheese pizzas, but they have a lot of other fun flavors. And all of the apps are insane... I will say we had a minor issue when it came to our food which delayed one of our dishes, but the staff remade it with no issues after that. Such a great Margherita Pizza and also I get the Pineapple Express with vegan meat. If you like that little kick with sweetness, I would recommend extra jalapeños. As much as it is sin for some people, I recommend asking for ranch cuz it's also bomb and just adds that goodness to the pizza! Perfect for their crust. The pesto was definitely unique. Do not sleep on the housemade pastas. Spaghetti with marinara is simple but absolutely tasty. Rigatoni alla vodka was good but under-seasoned. (Skip the focaccia though, it's just their baked pizza dough.) Plus a fun drink menu! Service left a lot to be desired. After the hostess seats you -- booths and tables inside, additional seating outside (there's also a bar) -- you're left on your own. If you can flag down a waitstaff, you can order with them. Otherwise you have to order through their QR code. The first time we went, the lack of waitstaff wasn't a problem. But the second time we went, it was definitely an issue. Our food came out very slowly and in no particular order. They also missed an item in our order, so we had to flag someone down twice (it took over 40 minutes for the dish to come out). Sonny's is still a great spot to check out, but adjust your expectations accordingly with their service (or lack thereof). read more

For $80, we shared a pizza, salad, and two drinks. The Caesar was heavily dressed and lacked crunch after being weighed down by the dressing. The pizza was good, crust had a nice chew, but was Parmesan heavy. The drinks were strong and my drink was the same cost as the pizza. The most disappointing aspect is you're on your own once you're seated. We grabbed our own box, grabbed extra napkins, and luckily had a carafe of water or else would probably have to get that too. You use the QR code to order and then they bring your food and drinks to you. Super efficient. The staff still regularly checks on you to make sure you have everything you need. They were all fantastic and friendly. We ordered the caprese and a pizza. I had a glass of wine and my husband had a cocktail. The drinks were good. My friends and I went to this place last night and were thoroughly happy with the food! To be honest, the service could have used a little help but in their defense, they were incredibly busy. We went on a Tuesday night and the place was packed! We were able to be seated right away which was a plus but parking is absolutely terrible! I think we all circled the block at least six times before we found a spot 4 or 5 blocks away. I know this sounds a little negative, but honestly the food and atmosphere was so delicious. Our first time here we were dazzled! Second time.... It was "ok". Not quite sure what the trick is but maybe come here around 5 pm when it's not busy. I took a photo of the same pizza (Pineapple Express) we ordered from our first visit and when we ordered it again, my boyfriend and I were confused. It was drenched in sauce, barely any jalapeños, soggy in the middle. But we were hungry and thought maybe we were just being picky. After comparing the two photos of the same pizza, I know we weren't being picky. The pizza was just not made right. We still like this place a lot tho. I was actually thinking of the other pizza place on Park Blvd. But we turned the corner, saw the patio, went to hunt for parking, which is even more of a challenge in the area since they installed those unused bike lanes. Since they were about seven weeks new, we ordered the fresh mozzarella. Olive oil, lemon juice/zest, and basil. This was really good! Even better with the wine. We decided to share the Blitzkrieg Bop. Small for the price point, but very good. We also shared the tagliatelle bolognese. This was very lackluster. Not a lot of meat sauce and the pasta was overcooked. Even chili flakes didn't help much. Great outdoor patio that is dog friendly. A number of workers came out to say hello to Cako. She got treats from the twins who worked there, and come to find out, they are actually triplets, but their brother had the day off. The space has a nice chill vibe and the staff was really friendly. I understand the checks appear to be electronic, but we didn't see the total when I asked to pay. After looking at my text receipt, they forgot to add the wine. Now the kid in me was like, "hit the road and go!" But the adult was like, "I want to come back and don't want to be that guy!" Earlier this month, the owners of Madison opened an '80s style, East Coast influenced pizzeria around the corner from the overarching 'University Heights' street sign on Park Blvd. The previous tenant of the building was an auto parts business so much refurbishing was needed including the installation of an imported, custom pizza oven. The layout featured a covered outdoor back patio that had the most available seating with picnic tables. You could also sit at the bar or some booths in the main dining room. Menu sheets were available at the unstaffed "hostess" stand near the doorway. You then used the QR code available at each table to place an order. While it saved on labor, I didn't like how this made it difficult to ask questions about items on the menu. I will mention more about this later. "Pizza and Fine Food" was stated on top of the food menu. This consisted of appetizers, salads, charcuterie boards, pasta, a burger, and a few entrees in addition to the pizza pies. From the list of appetizers, I selected the Pepp Rolls which was made up of mozzarella, pepperoni, green onion, parmesan, and a cup of marinara for dipping. The problem was that the order came as four small rolls for a whopping $18! At minimum, there should have been six to eight rolls because one can get an entire small pizza for that price. Had I known the quantity, I likely would not have ordered this item, but this goes back to a lack of a dedicated server. The rolls had a slight burn to the crust to give some crispiness to them. For an entree, my choice was the Tagliatelle Bolognese. A beef and pork ragu made up the sauce with a touch of cream added. A generous grating of parmesan topped the pasta dish which was very savory. The $21 price was high for the serving size of the noodles. A cheery staff member did come by my table to see how I was doing after the food had arrived. I just wasn't sold on the absence of upfront assistance which would have influenced my dining experience at Sonny's Pizza. read more

Brand new Sonny's Pizza by the team of Madison on Park (Right by University Heights) in collaboration with Chef Francesco of Cucina Migrante fame.. This resataurant has lot of character with sort of NYC Italian vibes.. It's also super cozy & family friendly with plenty outdoor seating. In the future they plan to also setup live music etc. in their large outdoor patio. Sonny's has imported a stylish pizza oven from Italy that can make 10 pizzas at the same time (and super quick too). Even their fittings like speakers etc. are designer custom made.
