Sonny's Pizza is in the heart of University Heights and fits right into the scene over here. It's a very fun restaurant complete with a patio and a really cool vibe. It is really awesome they can do accommodations like half and half, a lot of places are fussy about that. We had great service and the focaccia was delicious! The pizza fell just a bit short of expectations - the cheese was clumpy and not cooked enough. It was just okay - maybe just a one off. I would probably return to try it out again!

Best ranch ever created Perhaps 4 stars on a good day just because we got seated and then I think forgotten about a bit like they were so slow when it came to taking our order like 20min and then took about 10min to give us water and had to call somebody over to take our order. But really kind during service! + pizza crust not as crispy as expected, it's a very floppy pizza. The flavor however, was there.. Very Tasty! Spaghetti & Meatballs. Their tomato sauce is so good to me for some reason, it doesn't feel basic. That's what made it

My husband and I tried Sonny's months ago. Just getting around to posting the review. We were early enough to not have to wait for a table and were sat next to the bar. The table for two was tight once the food arrived but we managed. The drink menu is very creative and we had some difficulty deciding what to order. I saw the pizza special included ground beef. I haven't seen ground beef offered since I was on the east coast. Ordered that for nostalgic reasons. The pizza crust was thin like we've had in Connecticut. Sauce was great. The beef had peppers in it which wasn't my favorite. Service was excellent. Décor reminds me of garage hangouts in the 80s. Not mad about it. Parking is a problem though. We tried to go a few additional times but left after not lucking out with a spot in a three block radius. You can make reservations on weekdays for parties of 2-30.

Came here for a birthday celebration and for the amount of people we had, they were very accommodating. You don't interact with servers as much since everything is order and pay at the table through a QR code that you scan. The vibe here is super cute and aesthetic. I love every detail of the decor! As for the food, I got a side of potatoes which were an absolute 10/10. I also tried the Rigatoni alla Vodka. The portions are on the smaller side and while the potatoes stood out, the pasta wasn't my favorite. The noodles were cooked well and it had a good amount of sauce, but I think I was expecting a bit more flavor. I'd definitely try something different next time since my expectations were pretty high. I was originally looking for spaghetti and meatballs, but didn't see it on the main menu. I later noticed it was on the kids menu, which I don't usually check so I missed it. Parking is a hit or miss, but that's expected for the area. I spent about 15 minutes looking for parking.

This place is literally the best pizza in San Diego. Coming from the east coast, it's been so hard to find pizza that even compares. My partner and I come here at least once per week, and we always order it for delivery as well. It's such a cute atmosphere and we love sitting under the lights outside on the patio. The service is always very good, and the drinks are exceptional. We like the pepperoni and the cheese pizzas, but they have a lot of other fun flavors. And all of the apps are insane... We like the pepperoni rolls and the focaccia! I would definitely host a reception in the outdoor patio area, it's just so cute and homey feeling at the same time. I always recommend this to my friends!!

The food here is really great and when you're inside the restaurant, it actually puts you in the mindset of NY pizza joint. The service here was good and the staff is kind! I will say we had a minor issue when it came to our food which delayed one of our dishes, but the staff remade it with no issues after that. Parking isn't too bad since it's street parking but plan more time if you are coming here during a weekend!

The pizza here was perfectly made. We sat outside in the patio and the sunset made the experience 10xs better! I like that we can order online (this works well for big parties) and how welcoming the staff are. The ranch was definitely the cherry on top! Would definitely recommend, especially for a big party or special occasion!

Pleasant spot with a fun neighborhood feel and fresh ingredients. The pizza here is definitely enjoyable, but I'd set expectations around the size. The pies read more like a personal-pan situation than a large shareable pizza, which actually works really well for a date night or a small group where everyone wants to try different toppings. For a larger family or a group trying to eat on a budget, the portions might feel a little less practical. Style-wise, I wouldn't call it straight New York pizza, but it's also not Chicago or super heavy. It lands somewhere in the middle: a little crisp, a little chewy, and more elevated than your standard casual pizza spot. The topping quality was the highlight for me. Everything tasted fresh, and the ingredient selection gives you enough variety to build a solid spread without everyone having to agree on one giant pizza. Overall, I'd recommend Sonny's for a casual date, drinks and pizza, or a small group with different tastes. I'd come back, but I'd probably order with the expectation that each person may want their own pie or that you'll need a few items for the table.

I tried Sonny's on two separate occasions and both experiences were superb! The first time I ate here was New Year's Eve for my husband's birthday. The atmosphere was lively, the staff service was friendly and food service was even quicker for being a holiday surprisingly. We ordered the Pineapple Express Pizza and Pistachio Pesto Pasta. The pasta was great 10/10 and pizza was just as pleasing. We also tried the Zucchini Fritti and Classic NY Style Cheese Pizza also 10/10. What's also great about this place is you can utilize the QR code at the table to place your orders if you need to. So you don't always need to flag down staff to place your order. I would absolutely come here again and recommend it to others too!

Love this place! Been here twice now and had to go back to try the pasta. The pasta was good for sure but this is definitely all about the pizza. Such a great Margherita Pizza and also I get the Pineapple Express with vegan meat. If you like that little kick with sweetness, I would recommend extra jalapeños. As much as it is sin for some people, I recommend asking for ranch cuz it's also bomb and just adds that goodness to the pizza! Perfect for their crust. The pesto was definitely unique. Longer, wider noodles in the pesto sauce. With how much pasta there was, I don't think there were enough tomatoes. Although the pastas were good, I'd recommend the pizza. Very easy to order from the little table number QR code if needed. Waiters come in and check on you through your visit. Overall such a vibe. Very cute date night spot that's casual but feels classy. It smells like the most delicious pizza ever!

I liked the decor of the place. The crust of the pizza was a bit too thin and could not support the toppings. The server was nice but left me waiting to close out. I ended up asking the bartender to do it. I'll give it another chance in the future.

Sonny's is a vibey nostalgic spot for pizza. The food is spot on -- pizza is delicious, can't go wrong with the famous original but Blitzkrieg Bop is also good with the pepperoni cups. Do not sleep on the housemade pastas. Spaghetti with marinara is simple but absolutely tasty. Rigatoni alla vodka was good but under-seasoned. (Skip the focaccia though, it's just their baked pizza dough.) Plus a fun drink menu! Service left a lot to be desired. After the hostess seats you -- booths and tables inside, additional seating outside (there's also a bar) -- you're left on your own. If you can flag down a waitstaff, you can order with them. Otherwise you have to order through their QR code. The first time we went, the lack of waitstaff wasn't a problem. But the second time we went, it was definitely an issue. Our food came out very slowly and in no particular order. They also missed an item in our order, so we had to flag someone down twice (it took over 40 minutes for the dish to come out). Sonny's is still a great spot to check out, but adjust your expectations accordingly with their service (or lack thereof).

Absolutely amazing!! We had noticed this restaurant a few weeks ago and were so excited to go there!! We realized when we got there we should have done reservations, so we sat at the bar. We may only ever sit at the bar from now on because the service was sooo great! We were helped by Aja the bartender the most and she was so great! The restaurant owner Matt has an exceptional employee! The food was amazing and so flavorful! We had the Tagliatelle Bolognese and Rigatoni Alla Vodka with a Pesto for the People pizza! All amazing!! Go there!!! We can't wait to go back!

I was a bit hesitant because I typically cook my noodles IN the sauce versus topping them with sauce but this meal did not disappoint. Both the meat in the ravioli and sauce were very flavorful. The garlic bread was typical but still really tasty. The waitress was nice and hospitable. The ambiance was nice. The restaurant is located in the back of what looks like a store in front. I appreciate a nice whole in the wall, mom & pop shop. I'd definitely return next time I'm in SD.

Pizza Wasn't the Only Thing Getting Fired Up Outside…read more We weren't even customers here, but after what I saw outside this place I definitely won't be one in the future. We were standing on the sidewalk near the red seating area in front of Filippi's Pizza Grotto for about ten minutes finishing a smoke. I had recently experienced a flare-up of a chronic illness, which significantly affected my well-being. During this episode,I had felt the need to smoke as a way to manage the heightened stress and discomfort caused by my condition. Right as we finished and were about to leave, a police car pulled up (it honestly looked like the officer was just stopping by to grab lunch). That's when an older lady employee from the restaurant suddenly came outside and said, "Do you mind moving down? The smoke is going into my restaurant." Fair request. We immediately responded respectfully with "Sorry miss," and started walking away to avoid any issue. But instead of leaving it there, she kept escalating the situation while they were already leaving, repeating things like "This is a family business, have some respect!" -- which didn't really make sense considering we had already apologized and were doing exactly what she asked. What made the whole thing feel strange was the timing. We had been standing there for around ten minutes already. If the smoke was truly bothering the restaurant, why wait until the exact moment a police car pulled up to come outside and confront us? From the outside, it honestly looked like the presence of the police suddenly gave her the confidence to make a scene and try to draw attention to us even though we were already complying. It appears she wanted to get us into legal trouble with her making it a bigger scene in front of the police. Another thing that didn't sit right with me was that we were the only Hispanics standing in the area at the time and the only people she chose to confront. I'm not saying that was the intention, but from a bystander's perspective it definitely didn't look great. Also, I'm still confused by the "this is a family restaurant" comment. What exactly does that mean in this situation? Are people who smoke not allowed to eat there? Because we weren't even customers at the moment we were simply standing on a public sidewalk and immediately moved when asked. If someone respectfully complies with your request, there's really no reason to continue escalating the situation or trying to involve the police by drawing attention to it. If this is how people are treated outside the restaurant, it doesn't exactly inspire confidence about how customers are treated inside. It appears that if you're Hispanic or a smoker you should steer clear of this place. I wouldn't be surprised if she has ICE on speed dial.

Next, we got a glass of prosecco. I told the waiter that I only like wine that tastes much more sweet then bitter or strong and he made a perfect suggestion along with giving us a sampler of 3 different wines which was so generous. I got to try them all and pick the one I liked the most, but even the samples were a generous size. For main course I got one of the current options for the cheese wheel pasta they make in front of you in cacio e pepe and my husband got the formaggi pizza with truffle mushrooms. My husband absolutely loved his pizza and the crust was one of the best he's ever had. My pasta was fresh and had a ton of sauce and cream so they didn't skimp at all. I could tell easily that they use very high quality Parmesan because i'm a Parmesan connoisseur and could taste how potent it was. They let me have as much extra as I wanted on without limiting since I enjoy a lot on it which was also a plus in my book. Next time I would get a pasta that's a little lighter, because it was a more heavy dish and it tends to make me feel pretty full after which is totally a me thing, but they have so much on the menu to try that I'm sure I'll love whatever I get even more next time. Lastly, dessert. We got a regular tiramisu and it was absolutely amazing. They put a ton of cream which is exactly what I look for. It wasn't too espresso or cocoa strong and had a perfect ratio. The cream was so light and fluffy that we had to get another one to bring home and eat tomorrow night! I had seen a previous review on here about someone not liking the tiramisu here and it not meeting their expectations for a more upscale Italian place but I've been to quite a few authentic Italian gems and this one had tiramisu up there so I'd have to disagree and completely recommend! The service was impeccable. Every waiter was kind and prompt, constantly making sure we were taken care of and getting what we needed. The atmosphere was also a plus for us because we have a 1 year old baby and there was enough room where we weren't too cramped or crowded in, and it wasn't too loud or overstimulating. The place was very clean and taken care of as well as the bathrooms. All in all, I loved this place and I will be coming back. I would definitely recommend Monello for a nice little date night, and don't forget the tiramisu.
