Full disclosure: I'm Jewish and I've worked in a bagel shop. I have high standards for my bagels. While I'm really glad this place is in my neighborhood, the bagels are a disappointment. By default, a bagel with cream cheese here will be toasted. That is a bit of a peeve for me, but just the same you should let them toast it. They do not bake their own bagels, and they are not good enough or fresh enough to be eaten untoasted. I haven't tried most of the sandwiches, so I won't comment on the rest of the menu. Great deli selection (including specialty meats, cheeses, smoked fish, and dips/salads), great sandwiches, great bagels, and delicious baked/dessert items as well... good for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. There is nowhere to sit here; this is a carry-out only place. Also, cash only! Additionally, they have a nice selection of specialty food items (though those are on the pricey side... other food goods are appropriately priced). Coming from the NJ/NYC area, bagel places are plentiful, so I'm always on the hunt for a good bagel in DC. The 4-star Yelp rating definitely led me here, but it didn't quite meet my expectations. I had a sausage, egg, & cheese sandwich on a plain bagel. Nothing crazy, just something basic to get a feel for the place. I think my biggest turnoff was realizing that the eggs were probably microwaved. I've had that before, but I just feel like that immediately negates your ability to be a good place for breakfast sandwiches. Sometimes we'll forget about this place for a few weeks. When we remember again, one telling the other "You want to go to So's Your Mom?!" it's like asking "You want to go to the scooter store and pick one out, my treat?!" I should say upfront that I'm a bit of a Hanguk-phile, but even excepting the lovely owners, these are some of the best sandwiches you'll eat. I love that I can get a turkey and avocado sandwich with aloe juice here. The sandwiches are piled high, and I haven't had wilted lettuce or weepy tomatoes on nary a one. The selection of bread is phenomenal. There are also all kinds of packaged European treats in the store like digestive cookies, olives, etc. The only thing I'm not impressed with were the danishes, which I thought were kinda dry (but I'm also a bakery snob). So's Your Mom is a rarity these days- a friendly, family-owned place with amazing food. For something as easy as a sandwich, you would think it would be pretty hard to screw up. Unfortunately, false. Lots of other sandwich places screw them up pretty badly. So's Your Mom does things right. The bread is always fresh, the meat is Boar's Head (a must) and the selection superb. I love how when I go here I get asked things about past conversations ("how's the gym going?") and they recognize me ("everything bagel, egg, cheddar cheese and smoked turkey again?"). What you must do: locate a mild, sunny day (preferably a weekend), go to So's Your Mom and get a sandwich, walk down to Kalorama Park, sit on the grass, and enjoy. How did I live 10 minutes from here for the last year and not know about this place? It's fantastic! Great selection of deli meats, spices, and sandwiches (the real reason we went here). Their menu was very reasonably priced and had a lot of options and variety. The staff was super friendly and helpful - a family operation, I think. You could tell they took pride in their business. On the walk home, sandwiches in tow, I kept saying to my husband, "I love that place." Mind you, I hadn't even eaten my food at that point, but was I ever right. In case I wasn't clear, I absolutely love this place. It's tucked between some larger and, perhaps, better known places like Cashion's, so it's easy to overlook. My recommendation: don't over look So's Your Mom - it's amazing! read more

We love this place! They offer wholesome and delicious sandwiches. We tried the (1) avocado and chicken, and the (2) pastrami, mustard, and provolone on rye. They were both amazing. I can imagine eating here several times per month in the summer. Unfortunately, there isn't a dining area in the restaurant. And so, we won't be able to eat here regularly during the winter months. It's just a place to get really great sandwiches. I have been looking around for a sandwich place that weren't mass produced junk and I have finally found the jackpot. So's your Mom has about 3 dozen sandwiches to choose from, and the folks that own the place are friendly enough to come back. I've had about 15 of the sandwiches and I can say that they are all great, though I would skip the French bread -- it's a little tough but the rest are great! On the plus side, they have great ground coffee, bagels and pastries. DC is really lacking a great bagel. This place should be a place that everyone should make a priority to stop by. read more

The short: So's Your Mom is a great place to grab a deli sandwich in DC, and chase it with fresh Rugelach (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugelach). Have never been on a week day, but it's hopping on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Don't be discouraged by the big line...ya never have to wait more than 10 minutes. I would wish for more places like this in DC, but then again, I could just move to New Yawk. Downside: cash only, no seating. I just returned from So's Your Mom with 2 delicious sandwiches for lunch. However, they were 2 sandwiches that we did not order. More perplexed than anything... there was 1 other guy in the deli ordering a sandwich. And my husband and I were the only couple ordering 2 sandwiches together. Not busy, a slow Tuesday afternoon. We got 2 sandwiches, and neither were anything close to what we ordered. How? Why? They were good, just a little unsatisfying since it's not what we wanted. I tried this place last week after a friend told me how great the sandwiches were. He was right. I had a turkey avocado sandwich on an everything bagel with swiss, lettuce, tomato, and honey mustard. It was great. The bagel was awesome. I think I have found my place for bagels. Unless someone tells me otherwise. I also love the little market, and the unique items they have. Best deli in the area, possibly DC. There is a lack of good NY style delis around the city. This place consistently puts out great breakfast sandwiches and subs. The coffee is amazing. They have around 20 barrels of fresh coffee beans for sale also. Bring cash, leave happy. read more

This place is pretty cool. I wish it were larger though. Some of the stuff honestly is more fun to look through than it is practical. The bagels are great though. You could go to Bethesda Bagel down the street, but why bother with the huge lines and salty bagels, when you could go to So's Your Mom. It's a Korean family owned bagel and deli shop. They are open for breakfast and lunch and they make killer sandwiches AND you can get your own coffee beans there. I usually go for a lox bagel with scallion cream cheese and a poppyseed hamentaschen. I don't think they make their pastries in house but they are still delicious. read more

This is one of the best sandwich shops I've been to in DC. I had half of a Bronx Pastrami sandwich which had coleslaw and russian dressing on rye bread. The other half sandwich was turkey/avocado sandwich. Both were veryyyy tasty...I loved the Bronx sandwich though. THey do an amazing job of making the sandwiches almost like your mom is actually in the back...making it with love. The downfall of this place? Cash only. I liked the two sandwiches I got from here. One was the black forest ham with swiss on rye. The amount of meat, cheese, tomato, and lettuce was perfect. The second was turkey and avocado on sourdough, though I'm pretty sure it was just white bread. It's a good price and the meats/cheeses/ toppings are delicious. The bread on the other hand feels like cheapo Wonder bread. I think what would make this place way better would be fresh artisan bread and somewhere to sit. Also, cash only is a pain. The best cold sandwich I have had since moving here. I am from NY, where good sandwiches can easily be found. Down in DC, your choices are a bit more limited. Great price for the quality. Got the 1/2 corned beef and 1/2 pastrami as well as the Bronx pastrami. The meat tasted very fresh. The owner was very friendly and gave us a number of options including bread, condiments, hot or cold, etc. We went around dinner time so can't comment on mass confusion that others have written about. One thing this immediate area needs is a place to get GREAT bagels from and these, although the location is advertised as an almost New York deli, are not good bagels. I'm so happy this wonderful deli is in my neighborhood. Their coffee is really good and a must before my bus commute from hell in the morning. They have the best sandwiches (the Italian Hero is my favorite) and their fresh squeezed orange juice is probably the best I've ever had. I've never tried their pastries but they look ah-mazing. I think its a family owned business and they are always super friendly. They only accept cash but it's not a big deal, there's an ATM right outside. My only complaint is that its a really small space so it can get kinda awkward when it's busy and you're trying to distinguish between who's ordered and who hasn't. read more

In the year 2013, I have a hard time feeling good about cash only policies in any service establishment. Especially when the only ATM in proximity charges a $3.00 fee to withdraw funds. There are a multitude of simple electronic funds transfer systems in place for small businesses, and I think it does your customer a disservice by being so antiquated. That being said, the food at this sandwich shop is superb, and very importantly, consistent. I have thoroughly enjoyed every sandwich I've tried and I think the general atmosphere adds to the pleasant feeling one gets from having a sandwich handmade for them with quality ingredients. Came here for the first today since I was craving a bagel sandwich (something I very rarely crave or eat). The place was packeddddd, good for them, soo many people and it was quite confusing if there was a line to order or what. Turns out mostly everyone was waiting for their order to come up. The staff is nice, and there are soo many options for your meal, I decided to keep it simple and order a plain bagel with lox and scallion cream cheese. The bagel was delicious! Sure, not the most impressive request but it was solid. I will definitely come back, their menu is big and while I waited it seemed every other person ordered the turkey and avocado on sourdough, so perhaps I'll try that next! I loved this place! I cannot believe I never wrote a review for it. I used to live about 10 minutes away in Kalorama and would visit So's Your Mom pretty frequently. The owners are really personable and efficient though you generally have to wait. The place is cramped but the surroundings are interesting -- lots of imported packaged foods for sale like pickles and chocolate and hot sauce. My favorite was the mozzarella, sun dried tomato and olive oil on a baguette. Delicious! The sandwich was big enough for me to save half for the following day. They also serve breakfast foods like bacon egg and cheese or bagels with cream cheese and as a New Yorker, I give 2 thumbs up to their bagels. As has been mentioned, make sure you bring cash. If you need some there are various ATMs nearby. "So's Your Mom" as a store name never made us giggle or smirk, although it is kind of a strange name for the shop to have. Either way it's what's inside that counts right? Shop has definitely expanded beyond its capacity at this point to handle crowds- you don't pay until you get your food apparently, so that leads to lots of confusion over who's paying for what. There's not much room in this shop in the first place and people crowding around to order/wait for food/pay make the atmosphere rather chaotic even with just a few people. Each of the individual cashiers doesn't communicate with one another, making for a confusing mess.They need to work out a more efficient system in the future and/or change the layout of the store a bit. Egg and Cheese Sandwich bagel...which came highly recommended, was only okay. Lots of cream cheese on it, but there's just not a lot of flavor. Decent prices though. I'd like to give this place another shot in the future and the list of sandwiches on the menu looks mouthwatering. Coffee selection (of all things) also seemed varied, if a bit pricey.
