Very basic italian restaurant. Service was ok, nothing to brag about as they were very attentive since there were only 2 tables in use, us and someone else. FYI it was 530pm on Wed and it was dead. Shouldve taken that as a sign to leave. However we did stay, but what was annoying is that the waiters keep trying to upsell you on their specials. I said I wanted lasagna and they kept pushing fish because according to them, "its the best in the world!" Believe me, I get upselling, no worries, but dont keep pushing. Obviously, specials have no price so they are hoping to make their money that way. $37 for basic fish and again food was bla... Ive had better italian food at pizza slices shops. I didn't experience the service issues referenced in Marcy K's review. Actually everyone was very polite and friendly to me. Also, I should mention that my meal wasn't terrible. It just wasn't very good. The pasta was actually cooked perfectly, but the sauce was somewhat bland, and the pasta was drenched in it. I had the farfalle bolognese. To me, there shouldn't be any dairy in a bolognese, and the meat should have much more taste to provide contrast to the taste of the tomatoes and the seasonings. In this bolognese, they had clearly added too much cheese, which negated the taste of the tomatoes and the seasonings (if they even added any). Personally, I would lose the cheese, add some garlic, and throw a little sausage into the meat sauce. FYI: When I mention the cheese in the sauce, I'm not talking about the cheese that the waiters offer to put on your meal. I said no to that. I've been COMMING here for years I used to live right across from it when it was in the CVS shopping center. The food is good here, a bit on the pricey end for being a small unimpressive Italian restaurant by first sight, In the middle of a strip mall... but like I said, the food is good. I love the roasted garlic they serve with the fresh baked bread. The brick oven pizza is delicious and unique, can't find pizza that has this taste anywhere else, something with their brick oven that captures a certain flavor. They have the best baked clams! They just get the flavor combo right. I've tried baked clams everywhere and Sotto Luna has the right recipe. Their chicken parm and Francese are great. We usually order a side of vegetables instead of pasta and they are always delicious and prepared special. There are always people dining here and it is definitely a popular local restaurant, yet you never have to wait for a table which is good. I think this place is like a best kept secret! I had dinner this evening in Sotto Luna's new location. What a disappointment! Although the restaurant has a broad menu, few of the dishes were exciting. The soup of the day, a vegetable purée, was excellent. The biggest disappointment was the service. It started out chaotic and then progressed to inattentive. I could not understand how a restaurant with a longstanding history in a nearby location could have faltered so greatly in its new location. This place has the best rigatoni in vodka sauce as well as delicious angel hair pasta primavera and chicken parmesan. Their house salad has a wonderful vinaigrette dressing. I've been here twice with my family and I've enjoyed it both times. The parking is good. The service and food are both great. Portions are good depending on what you get. My meal came with a choice of pasta or sautéed vegetables. The vegetables were pretty sparse compared to the bowl of pasta. Some things may be a little overpriced. Do you like tasteless Italian food, rude waitresses and overbearing waiters, and pushy owners? Then this place is for you. We were here for a very small family gathering, and through a recommendation from someone who obviously doesn't have discriminating taste, went to Sotto Luna. I should have known this wouldn't be a stellar place when I received a nasty phone call from the place on June 5 at 6:00. --The restaurant (with an attitude): "Where are you? Your reservation was for a half hour ago and you're not here yet." --Marcy: Umm. I'm in Massachusetts. The reservation is for tomorrow. --Restaurant: Well, you told us it was for June 6. --Marcy: You may need a new calendar; June 6 is tomorrow night, not tonight. --Restaurant: Oh. Sorry. See you tomorrow then. They set up a table for 10 in the back of the place, and everyone kept bumping into us. The waiter distributed menus, waited about 5 minutes, and then came back for the order of appetizers. Mr. K explained that we hadn't looked at the menu yet, cuz our family hadn't seen each other in a while so he'd have to wait. He waited about 5 minutes and returned, at which time Mr. K was a little more forceful. We were going to order a bottle of wine, and the server kept pushing his $48 bottle. He poured out some for Mr. K to try and then removed the glass (there were still a few gulps left in it). We ordered a $24 bottle instead. Eh. Not worth it. A few minutes later, a rather nasty waitress came by and told my daughter to "move the thing that was under her chair before someone breaks her/his neck." I don't remember hearing a "please." The waiter kept hurrying us along to take the order, and he was annoyed when we weren't ready. Apps: Fried calamari (flavorless and wasn't crispy; had a marinara sauce--see my description of the sauce further down), and bruschetta (little chunks of mozzarella and not what we expected--was bland). Meals: I don't remember them all except for a chicken and pasta dish (the one who ordered it put plenty of red pepper on it and said it was ok); salmon (the two orders had no flavor and were a little too pink); linguini in clam sauce (nothing special but Mr. K said it was ok); and eggplant parmesan, which was my dish. I've had a lot of eggplant parmesans, even those bought in a supermarket, and this was the worst one by far. Seemed undercooked. The marinara sauce tasted like ketchup mixed with a little water. I left over 9/10 of it, and it wasn't because I was full. Vile. The waiter seemed put out that we didn't want coffee, and after he bumped my daughter and showed his bad 'tude once more, we paid and left and headed to the Starbucks next door. Stars: 1 for food cuz there is no zero; 1 for service cuz of the bad attitude; 3 for having somewhat decent bread; 4 for having A/C; 5 for being in great company. This place has good food, my family loves it but the food is inconsistent some times.

I've been here a few times over the last few years. I just can not agree with the previous posts. First and foremost the food, if not very good, is excellent. We reserved a table for six showed up on time and were seated immediately. This was 7pm on Sat. night. It did take a while to get a menu but once we ordered the food came out quickly and all of us were served at the same time. Six entrees six rave reviews for food. The waiter did not hang on us but you could see he had his eye on the table ready to respond to any request. For dessert we only had the Italian cheesecake. It was very good and not overly sweet. I am surprised to read any negative reviews for Sotto Luna. Having come here for several years, I have never had anything close to a bad meal. The wait staff appear to hold loyalty to this restaurant as they've been around at least as long as I've been dining here. We particularly enjoy the service provided by Myra. I have noticed that many of the negative reviews are quite old, particularly Marcy's. Perhaps it's time to retire those rather than retain them for perpetuity. I guess this is a reason why companies exist that are reputation defenders. I suggest you give them a shot. read more

My two friends decided to take me out to dinner because I just retired. Dinner reservations were made well in advance. Upon arriving we were told we had to wait. They had 3 tables open, so I inquired. The owner/hostess was very nasty and rude. Those empty tables were being saved for friends and regular customers A group came in at 6:20 and said they had a 6:30 reservation and were seated immediately while we had a 6:00 reservation and were left standing. Their customer service is very poor and the way they treat you unless you are a regular is disgusting. After 1/2 hour we were seated and 15 minutes later we got up and walked out after the owner so rudely pointed to us and said something to other customers. I will never go back. There are so many other italian restaurants with better food and that actually care about their customers whether you are a regular one or new one. read more

Sotto Luna: this is delicious Italian food. I've been coming here with my family since my teens, and I am now in my early 30'w. Sotta Luna is one of my favorite restaurants to eat at whenever I am home visiting my parents. The food is consistently spectacular. There is an extensive menu, they offer a long list of specials, and the food is always perfectly prepared. As a starter, they serve toasted bread with roasted garlic. Brilliant. My favorite meal to get is the mista salad (the baslamic is some of my favorite balsamic) and the pasta with chicken, sun dried tomato sauce, and goat cheese. The pizza is equally yummy. The wait staff are always attentive, and some are even the same staff in the 20 years we have been dining here. In this day and age, it is nice to see the same faces at your local eatery. read more

Have been coming here on and off for many years, but has been a while since the last time. Service is never great and have often had problems with having to wait even after making a reservation. Made a reservation for Valentine's day. There were 5 other couples with the same reservation time - which is probably 1/3 of the available seating. It was unclear who the host/hostess was, as multiple people were seating people in NO apparent order. People that came in without a reservation were squeezed in before ANY of the reservations were seated - and we were already 15 minutes past our reservation. We were the first couple to arrive for our timeslot (early) and after the second couple that came in after us was seated, we finally had to leave as we were not going to have enough time to eat. The staff really had no process or organization for how they were seating people and could not tell us how much longer or how many more they were seating before us. VERY POOR SERVICE. It was a disappointment. Food is solid traditional Italian, but nothing out of this world and that I can't get elsewhere. I won't be back. Luckily 388, who always has impeccable service and amazing food, was able to get us in immediately. read more

Wow this was an all time low!!! Absolutely disgusting!! I ordered the chicken compiniolo, it even looked and smelled horrible! I tasted it and it tasted the way it looked and smelled. It was served in a gallon of oil with a touch of tomato sauce and RAW garlic, peppers, onions and BOILED potatoes. So horrible. I have been coming to this restaurant for years. This is a cozy neighborhood type restaurant with a wonderful ambience. I cannot remember ever getting a bad meal or a tasteless dish. My favorites have been the chicken parm, eggplant parm, shrimp dishes particularly with their marinara sauce, and the veal and chicken dishes have been delicious. The fried calamari is excellent nice and crispy and meaty, and the waiters and waitresses have always been polite and welcoming. Summer is comfortable, and I can remember going there on winters snowy days and feeling warm and welcomed. The drinks are well prepared and large. I just recently attended a family birthday gathering there and it was superb. Great service... I totally recommend this restaurant for individual or group dinners. NY is known for having great pizza, but not this place. I only went during lunch for a pizza, ordered a pizza margherita. I think they need to get a recipe on how to make a pizza margherita as this was the farthest from a margherita - no fresh mozzarella on it, no fresh basil - its was awfully soggy, the sauce was horrible. Again, there are,lots of great pizza places in the area (Umberto's, Ivarone) but this is not one of them, not even close. p..s the table next to me were complaining about their selections, too. read more

Finally a good Italian restaurant that's not mailing it in and serving overcooked pasta. Fried calamari and eggplant rollatini excellent. Fried expertly, perfect sauce with eggplant. Wife had pasta with broccoli and chicken, cooked perfectly. I had chicken parm and it was very good with excellent non salty sauce. Service was great! Finished with 2 espressos and a Sambuca. Seriously, the food, presentation and service are way above what you would expect from a such a local gem. Probably the most underrated restaurant on the North Shore. Food is delicious and so fresh. They bring you two types of bread to start, and have a large (but not too large) menu to choose from. If you ever want to throw a small party, like baby shower or bridal shower....DON'T use this place!!!!! I had made reservations for a small baby shower. I asked for a day and time where I know restaurants aren't too busy. I should have gone with my gut when I wanted to give the owner a down payment and he said I didn't need to do that. All he did was put my name, date of event and phone # in the book. Needless to say, when I called to confirm the day before the baby shower, he said he had a bigger party and wouldn't be able to fit mine in!!!! Wow , I couldn't believe it!!!! That' was soooo messed up! And then of course he got nasty! It was a blessing in disguise, I had found a much better place, with more room, better service, a great owner that took care of my party in literally no time, and had great food.
