As I live within walking distance of Soul I dine here at least once or twice a week. As a result there is no Yelper more qualified to share the heart and soul of Soul Central. Here's everything you need to know from the Soul to the Central... Parking: I guess you could say Soul Central has its own parking lot in a way. Soul Central is located in the same, bummy-looking plaza as Three Amigos (another local favorite in case you did't know) and as a result parking can often be crowded and a bit tight to say the least. If there's no parking in the immediate area in front of Soul Central, don't fear there's plenty of parking in the rear. Food: Awesome. Amazing. Fresh. Fantastic. Tasty. Tender. Seasoned. Succulent. Pick an adjective. Everything, and I mean absolutely every single food item they serve is on point. The candied yams are awesome. The mac-n-cheese is no lie, something I find only on Thanksgiving Day. The collards - make you just shake your head - YUMMY! Don't get me started on the wings! You heard it here first: THE BEST FRIED CHICKEN WINGS IN CHARLOTTE. Service: The service couldn't be more friendly, kind and courteous. Everyone there is super friendly. Yes, they can be slow. This isn't Chipotle, it can take a 10min or longer to get your food, know that going in. Or, save yourself some time, and call-in a pick-up order, and you're good. Those that know will agree, there simply is no better Soul Food in Charlotte, NC. I don't care what you call it - soul food, comfort food, grandma's cooking, down-home cooking - its good food. Wow, very impressed with Soul Central. I ordered through DoorDash and I'm ready to drive there to kiss the cook . Wish I'd found this sooner! Perfect southern food and that's hard to find. Fried okra was best I've had! Perfectly crispy. Black-eyed peas, meatloaf, potatoes, sweet tea all were just perfect! This is one of those places that you can order anything on the menu and you'll enjoy. Spread the word. read more

Good selection and fresh picks. I got the combination plate that is about $9.50 plus tax of BBQ chicken, Mac n cheese, and mash potatoes. An extra side cost $2.50 so I passed on considering a real veggie. I signed up easily on the loyalty pad. The mash potatoes were good and the Mac was delicious with a kick perhaps pepperjack. The BBQ chicken was good just wish it was a big meaty piece. The cornbread was thick cake-like yet fluffy. I highly recommend. read more

So far the best soul food I've found in Charlotte. Way better than Nana Morrison's in my opinion. I had the jerk chicken which was incredibly flavorful and I will come back for that for sure. For my sides I had the collard greens which were excellently cooked and packed with flavor, the best I've had in Charlotte. I also had the Mac & cheese which I didn't expect to like because the cheese wasn't creamy like I normally go for but it was also very good. I unfortunately didn't get my cornbread so I can't speak to that :/ the reason I gave this restaurant and meal 4/5 stars is because of the absence of my corn bread as well as the sweet potato pie. I just don't know how you make sure a great meal and then for sure but this pie from a third party. The crust wasn't cooked and if this pie was packed with sweet potato then the color would be a deeper orange. I recommend that the restaurant make these in house from scratch to match the rest of their food. I'll pass on the pie next time but that won't stop me from coming back. Tried their food for the first time ever and I'm in love! I ordered their fried fish, mac and cheese, collard greens with a side of cornbread. The meal also came with an iced tea and I purchased their peach cobbler. Their service was excellent, location is clean and inviting. Food is inexpensive and less than 10 minutes from my job. On a humbug I figured I'd search for some new spots to eat for lunch and happened upon Soul Central. Now I'm from the South and soul food is a way of life in my family so though I was initially skeptical, I decided to give it a try. According to the owner they've been open about 7 months and have been a hit with the customers. The Space: Small storefront situated beside a hair salon and convenience store. There's limited seating (3 small tables, 9 chairs and a bench). There's not much for decor but I think they're going for an island theme judging by the Caribbean music playing and the Trinidad and Tobago flag displayed at the front. The service: I was greeted by a very nice woman who ascertained that I was a new customer and was immediately helpful in my meal choosing. She ensured that all my food was fresh and hot and she even came back to ask if everything was ok. Also, though it's more of a self service spot she didn't charge me for my food until after I ate. Excellent! Also the manager came over and struck up a conversation with me which was nice. She might've sold me on coming back for the Roti and she mentioned they plan to expand the menu to include oxtails soon! The only thing is that the fried chicken took a super long time to come out and by the time it did I was too full to try it while it was still hot. The food: I was a fatty and ordered Pot Roast AND Fried Chicken since I couldn't choose. For sides I ordered the Mac n cheese and collard greens. Everything was AMAZING. The roast was well seasoned and very tender. The collard greens are vegan so even without meat they were very tasty. I'm just partial to my mama's Mac n cheese and no one will come close to that but it was a basic baked Mac n cheese but good. The cornbread wasn't anything spectacular but it wasn't hard or bland. It kinda tasted like jiffy corn bread. They also have deserts but I was way too full to try any. Maybe next time. BUT THE FRIED CHICKEN THO!!!! Man, listen. The value: For 10.00 it was a lot of food considering its "homemade" and you can spend way more than that at a fast food restaurant. The experience: I came in after lunch around 2pm and it was empty. I didn't mind it since it's so small. Overall it was good and I felt welcome and attended to without it being overbearing. The chicken was fried fresh which meant I had to wait but also I had fresh hot chicken #catch22 I would definitely return to try more food :) read more

After seeing all the good reviews I just had to give this place a try. I'm glad did! I ordered the weekly special - which is your choice of meat, one side and a piece of cornbread. For the price, you simply can't beat that! I went with the meatloaf, collard greens and jalapeño cornbread. The meatloaf was savory and delicious. The collards were well seasoned and are vegan! So everyone can enjoy them. And while the jalapeño cornbread was a perfect compliment! The service was great too! Everyone here was very kind! I saw a lot of other goodies that I'd want to try here so I'm absolutely looking forward to coming back! read more

I just received my order via doordash. I decide to make review because it's just not what I expected. The peach lemonade I got is absolutely gross. The fried chicken is seasoned well with nice crispy skin. The yams are pretty good and come with a good portion. Also got potato wedges which are baked? Idk but they are not flavorful or crispy like I would think. The green beans lack flavor but are kinda spicy which is interesting and not a total bust. There is no peaches in my peach cobbler but it's $4 worth of dry crust. ‍ please I just don't even know what's going on here. Whew Chile. read more

HOT DAMN! This place was so freaking GOOD DAWG. Can you tell from all the caps! Ugh I've been in a journey for some good soul satisfaction food made from love and Fayetteville just doesn't have that as much as you do in bigger cities. Thank goodness I traveled this weekend cause honty! This was everything! Back home, there is a nice spot I went to that is no loner that Soul Central reminded me closely of. It sits in a plaza at the end of a busy Main Street. Limited parking but enough to get in and get out. There is no dining in seats for to go as well as outside seating. Service is quick. Food is freshly prepared daily. The food is prepared ready for you to come & pick what you want with a wide range of food from oxtails, greens, meatloaf, ribs to flounder. I ordered the meatloaf meal w/ yams, greens, & Mac of course which came with 2 sides, cornbread & a drink. All that for under $12!!!! Everything was on POINT. The meatloaf was tender seasoned for the gods with peppers & onions the whole 9. Mac n cheese was baked not wet with loads of cheese was really good tho I've had better, it was still delicious. The greens were spicy and seasoned just right! I love my greens to have more vinegar but again they were so good. The cornbread was sweet. The peach tea was the only bad thing. Not good. But every time I'm in Charlotte this will always be my stop on the way back home please go and try them out. read more

This place is such a hidden gem. I was visiting Charlotte and was craving some good southern soul food. This place was near where I was staying, so I decided to give them a try. Upon entering , I was instantly greeted. They had food out on the counter in front of you so you're able to see what the options were. Everything looked so good, it was difficult to chose. The server even offered to let me try the jalapeño corn bread with my meal and exchange it if I did not like it. I got the jerk chicken, black eyed peas, regular corn bread and sweet tea. All of it was delicious! I will definitely visit this place when I'm in Charlotte again. read more

Very nasty place, dirty chairs, dirty floors and you can smell roach infestation. I ordered one fried chicken and a side of Mac n cheese and my fry chicken was red on the inside but the crust had good seasoning and the Mac n cheese was good but very greesy. Partner and I were in town for a concert and this place was the highlight of the trip. If you're looking for some small plates and fancy words then stop reading right now. This spot is all fire southern cooking that you could only get at your grandmothers house - until now. Juicy baked chicken, buttery and cheesy mac and cheese, and the green beans? Don't even get me started. Try this spot if you want big box meals at a reasonable price. There are daily specials but I'd eat everything I'm sure. Soul Central is a gem of Charlotte! I come here at least twice a week for the lunch special and it is consistently amazing every time! The collard greens are my fave! So much flavor! Piping hot when they come out and did I mention the flavor! The lunch special with two sides is always a go to! Super affordable and filling! I recommend the fried fish lunch special! read more

Although I could easily see people getting this place confused with the long standing restaurant Soul that happens to be on Central it is quite different. This is great soul/southern food with a little island flair if you want. When I walked up I was a little confused. I expected to be smelling some ham hocks in collards and all I could smell was curry. Once I got inside though, I realized that this place had a little more diversity than your average soul food spot. I ordered myself some jerk chicken, green beans, mac and cheese and some jalapeno corn bread. I ordered some meatloaf and mash potatoes for my cohort. The jerk chicken certainly didn't blow me away, but everything else was awesome! Great creamy mac and cheese. Perfectly cooked green beans. Plus, that corn bread ain't no joke either. All that food, plus drinks for under $20. I will certainly be back. read more

NASTY place with dirty floors and even smelled dirty! I ordered fried chicken that was raw in the inside but crispy on the outside. My mistake for not checking food until I got home. I immediately called them to let them know. Woman who answered the phone told me there was nothing she could do because I had already left the restaurant. I offered to text or email picture of chicken but she refused. Did not even apologize for serving raw chicken. Very rude! I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. TAKE YOUR BUSINESS ELSEWHERE! read more

Cafeteria style restaurant off of Central, stopped by for an early dinner and had the baked chicken over dressing, greens and cajun rice with bread and drink for $10. The rice didn't have much flavor and the corn bread was ok but the chicken, dressing and greens were all good. May return to try more sides. read more

Was nervous when I didn't see any black workers because of the name. I got the fried chicken was seasoned well and crispy. The Mac and cheese was bland I will not get that again. The fried okra was good. The food was piping hot. Tres leche cake is good as well. Overall I will return. read more

Soul Central is so good! I can't believe it took me so long to make it here. It's cafeteria style, walk up and order. I got the ribs with yams, mashed potatoes and green beans. The mashed potatoes with gravy were my favorite. Red skin mashed with garlic. Yams so good too! Portions generous especially for price. You also get some corn bread. I will be back and can't wait to try some of their other dishes. read more

Can I just say...Soul Central was a whole mood. It was EVERYTHANG (in my best Katt Williams voice). My best friend and I decided to go for Charlotte Black Restaurant Week after looking at the menu and seeing not only the large amount of options but the amazing prices. As soon as I walked in and heard the classic slow jams, I knew the food would match the vibe. It's truly a hole-in-the-wall from the outside in and we were lucky to get there when we did to snag a table. I ended up getting the fried catfish - and let me tell you, if a place doesn't fry to order...run. My sides were mac and cheese and yams which did NOT disappoint. All I needed for the cornbread was some honey butter. Sadly they were out of the curry chicken, which tells me it must be THAT good. So trust and believe, I'll be back before the month is over. read more

This place is, without question, an absolute gem in Charlotte. We tried it yesterday for the first time, through door dash delivery. We got fried chicken, Mac and cheese, and collard greens, with cornbread on the side. Everything was outstanding! But the fried chicken, totally next level. It went beyond my expectations. I'm never, ever getting fried chicken anywhere else. I didn't realize chicken could taste THAT amazing. If you haven't tried this place yet, do it! It's worth every penny. Just ate here today and picked up fried chicken wings, Mac and cheese, and collard greens. The 5 Wings are wing pieces. Also cornbread and a water (tea was an option). Not quite sure how I feel about the cornbread. It's so extra moist. Kinda tastes like a sweet piece of cake at first bite. It's better than a lot of places. The price was $9.50 but i was only able to eat half the food so I'm saving the rest for later. Nice spot and friendly people. Will come back again. read more

Order through Uber Eats. Waited over an hour to get our food. Got their fried chicken, collard greens, corn bread. Food was good and tasty. Just wish food doesn't come in styrofoam containers. Soul Food at it's best. This new spot is right beside Three Amigos on Central Ave. If you loved "Lolas" you will definitely like Soul Central, because it's owned by former Lola's chef David. Very friendly staff and the food is delicious. I'm a meatloaf connoisseur and just like Lolas, they have one of the best in town! If you're feeling adventurous, then try the jalapeño cornbread over the regular. Mac n Cheese was my favorite side. Sweat tea is money! There is some inside and outside seating, but not a lot, so it's more setup for buffet style to go orders. They do accept credit cards. read more

I recently learned about Soul Central and my boyfriend and I went for dinner.It is AMAZING!!It was so amazing I went again the next day for lunch. There are a variety of daily options to select from wherein you choose one meat and two sides.The food is already prepared and ready to be served.I have tasted the smothered porkchop,fried talapia,meat loaf,collard greens,cabbage,black eyed peas,yams,and mac&cheese.This review would be so long if I went into detail about how each option has its own perfected,unique taste.To top it off you are given cornbread or a roll.I chose the jalapeño cornbread both times.It is very moist like a pound cake. What happened. This place used to be a weekly visit for me and my company. Always good food, helpful service, a pleasure to pickup food for the guys at work. The last three times I told myself I'm not coming back. My mistake. Waited 30 minutes for food I didn't order; had to wait for the staff to finish smoking; was asked to leave a cash tip bc the owner took all credit card tips; ... I don't want to go on. I thought the food was good but the service was horrifying. I spent 10 minutes on the phone going back and forth with somebody about whether or not the black eye peas were vegetarian. They had no idea what that meant and no idea what was in the black eye peas either. I had to go online and scroll Thru photos for evidence of this being vegetarian. I finally was able to confirm it by a photo of the menu on the yelp page. With ppl who have dietary restrictions and a growing vegan/vegetarian/pescatarian community a simple question like that should know how to b answered. Again the food was good, the price was right, i just know not to ask no questions of staff on the phones if i return. read more

My experience at Soul Central wasn't bad. I don't think they are set up to have customers dine in. The place itself is charming on the outside and has cafe style tables which I thought was nice. The service was friendly and polite. As with many "soul food" restaurants there's an item on the menu that they were out of. (No cabbage) Nonetheless the food that I had was good. The fried chicken is seasoned well and fried to order. I would have rated Soul Central higher but they don't have AC!!!! How are you serving food in Charlotte, NC with seating (although limited) and not have AC. It was BLAZING hot in there. Like I said the food is good but they may want to become carry out only. read more

The food was ok... not as flavorful as I thought it would be.. but the barbecue sauce is good.. they need to add more sauce bc the chicken was pretty dry... and the Mac n cheese was ok.... it was really bland..but they have potential and I will try them again and make special requests for my order. I would say give them a shot... they weren't bad... they can just get better with time.. it is all in learning what the customers prefer. read more

Soul Central will not disappoint. My girlfriend and I stopped by for a late lunch this past Saturday and really enjoyed everything we ordered (ox tails, green beans, collard greens, roti, jalapeno cornbread, and banana pudding). The food was well seasoned and the menu offers a lot of variety for everyone to enjoy. This business is run by family and close friends and we were fortunate enough to meet the co-owner, his wife, and son who were all on site that day. We all sat, talked, and laughed. It was a pleasure meeting them. Business was steady and the family greeted every customer with smiles and hellos as they came and went. The entire staff was very friendly. Rude women that don't greet you when you say hello. The mac and cheese was nast. the noodles were overcooked. The sides went from having to much seasoning to not enough. Who ever changed the cornbread recipes needs to be fired!! This used to be my spot and now it's terrible!!! read more

Since moving to Charlotte this was my first time locating a soul food restaurant lol. I went there with high expectations and they certainly did not disappoint! The restaurant is a cozy one but I was glad to see there was plenty of parking. They have different specials on different days. I opted for the baked chicken with mac and cheese, yams and corn bread. Everything was on point especially the corn bread. There were many different choices though. Everything from rice to collard greens. The staff was also very nice and attentive. I will be back for more for sure! read more
