Time for an update. I'm a long time fan of SK. Their blt is delicious. Now the bad. The dark haired woman who runs the register has got to be one of the biggest curmudgeons I've ever delt with. No friendly greeting or "thank you" when you leave. Seriously one of those people that wakes up on the wrong side of the bed everyday. Just watching her deal with other customers was horrifying. Secondly, the bread "sticks" are now a joke. They are literally 1/4 the size of the original. So they raise the cost of the food but give you less? Lastly. Tip shaming. You know the type of P.O.S. system that asks for a 10% etc tip. I can't stand those. The soup and sandwiches are still good, I'll probably just visit one of their other locations. read more

I have been coming to soup kitchen for years. And I haven't been there in about 6 months or so and I went in today for lunch and just wow..... the new manager there is awful. She is completely rude to costumers and I feel bad for any door dasher that comes in there. I'm also sad to see that not of the girls that have worked there for years that I know all there customers have grown to love do not work there anymore. It's really upsetting to see what a great little mom and pop shop just go so down hill. I'm so glad my boyfriend told me about this place!!! Most AMAZING customer service I've ever had. As soon as I walked in the door I felt welcome and not stressed like other food places. Really make you feel happy. Not a second did I feel anxious or unhappy with my services. That's just the service. The food alone reminded me of my childhood. Sandwiches and soup no other way to have on any day. Every bite felt special. And very filling to. I can't wait to keep going here more. It was just absolutely amazing. I'm not sure how I feel about this place. Their menu showed a sub sandwich, but I got my order on a hamburger bun. The sandwich was good, but it was nothing that I couldn't get elsewhere for the same or even cheaper prices. The clam chowder was alright, but there were more potatoes than soup. The ladies spent time talking to each other instead of addressing me when I came in. I felt kind of awkward and slightly unwelcome. So disappointing. I've been eating lunch at the Soup Kitchen for 20+ years. The last two times I have done the lunch run, we've all been terribly disappointed. The soups are watery, have little flavor and the rolls are stale. To top it all off, their website forces you to tip them at least 10%. I don't feel bad tipping, I just don't like being forced to add it to the credit card transaction. The stars are for the French Dip sandwich and SKS, which were delicious. read more

I love this place! This is my favorite lunch spot, but beware: it's nothing fancy. To me, that is part of its charm. It's definitely not the sort of place to attract tourists or to take a date -- this is a place to go for lunch with good prices, good service, and great food. The atmosphere is bland, and the food is very basic. For about ten bucks you get a freshly made sandwich, (I love the egg salad, SKS, chicken salad, and deli sub) a cup of soup, (literally all of their soups are excellent, with my personal favorites being the tomato, clam chowder, vegetable, and chicken noodle) bread (the typical options are garlic, wheat, and cheese, although I don't think the cheese tastes like much of anything) and a drink. I could eat lunch here five days a week and be fine with it -- there's been times where I've come close. If you're just looking to relax and sit down for an easy lunch this place is fantastic. read more

I'm really surprised no one has reviewed this yet; this place is a fixture on that part of town along Redwood at lunchtime. So, let me just start here with the good parts. The SKS sandwich is stunning and a marvel, easily one of the best sandwiches in the valley, though it's better on the days when you can get them putting a little extra turkey in there. The bread is always fresh and done right and they clearly use high quality ingredients. The staff is also pretty nice and the breadsticks and cookies, while not great, are usually pretty decent. The less good parts, full disclosure here, but I'm not a major soup fan or even a minor soup fan at all. So the appeal of their main food selection is somewhat lost on me, especially moreso that I kept finding onions in everything, an item which tends to give me very painful upset stomach spasms, at best and at worst...let's just let our imagination fill in the blanks. I must have lucked out the first few times I ate there, as I had their tomato soup, which I thought made a decent dipping sauce for the breadsticks, but little else and the others I disliked (some of them intensely). The place is more expensive than I like for the lunch you get. That SKS is nearly a $6 sandwich, yet we're talking 2 pieces of bread (about the same size you get if you go buy a loaf of Smith's brand or whatever, , some mayo, some turkey, bacon, sprouts and lettuce. Tack in the soup and breadsticks and a drink and you're pushing or over $10, but the sandwich by itself, while hearty, is not exactly filling. The other sandwiches are ok, but not much better there. For me, I'm almost better off eating from the dollar menu at Crackdonald's. Parking there ranges from really bad to impossible, depending on what time you get there. If it's around the lunch rush and you're not at the head of it, you may as well plan on going somewhere else or waiting about an hour. They do move people through pretty well, but the inside is cramped and tiny. It's not very enjoyable to eat lunch there, so plan on taking the show on the road. This is somewhat of a Salt Lake icon (and a staple for more than a few people I know), so a visit to any of the restaurants is probably in order if you liked soup and haven't tried it yet. The SKS, while good, is not worth going to one of these just for that and is better off as something someone else who likes the place better can pick up and bring back for you. Just be prepared to supplement it. read more

I don't mind the Soup Kitchen, but I wouldn't say it's my first choice for lunches. I ordered the sloppy joe special with a cup of cheddar/broccoli soup- not sure if they changed the soup recipe recently or if I got a bad batch, but it tasted pretty bland. Same with the sloppy joe- probably could've used more flavoring in the sauce. they were also out of garlic breadsticks when I was there which is a crying shame . read more
