How to mess with a customer's salad ? Wash the lettuce (thankyou for washing it) and not drying it with a salad spinner, they're only $10 bucks. Then slicing or chopping the wet lettuce so big you have to go through it and make it bite size. It's unappealing and unappetizing to wade through the water as you eat your salad with wet ham & turkey, wet cheese, wet tomatoes, wet carrots, wet cucumbers. Wet soggy salad that you have to set up on a slant so the water RUNS to corner to be sopped up with a napkin. They gave a a half filled container of dressing marked with an "A". I requested Bleu cheese. Their chicken is good, but I didn't request that today. The prices they advertise are lower than what you actually pay. Why advertise incorrect prices? For a great salad go further east to the Pie Pizzeria. read more

Very good soup, we didn't try sandwiches, but each soup is served with a yummy piece of bread that she's some delicious seasoning on top of it. I really appreciated that the staff knew what ingredients were in each soup. We have a dairy intolerance and they were able to tell us that the bread with the soup doesn't contain any dairy nor did the split pea soup, vegetable beef and chili (those were the ones we asked about). The soups we tried were very tasty! The chili was a bit more soupy than I typically get or make, but we both really liked it! The split pea soup was very flavorful and had ham in it. Yum! The beef and vegetable soup was so good. All the meat was tender as can be and the flavors were out of this world. I would recommend all three. We will definitely be back soon! read more

This place has gone downhill. The split pea soup was gritty and the peas were still hard. What used to be all you can eat bread sticks is now a half a bread stick which was very hard and stale. We won't be going back. What was once an incredible place for soup is now garbage. read more

While out and about in Salt Lake yesterday, looking for a new apartment/place/somewhere to call home, we fell into the Sugarhouse area, and I also developed a meeeean headache. I was extremely hungry, and having been in the car for the past 2 hours, I decided to Yelp it up and find somewhere to get some food. Right as Manfriend said he cculd go for some soup and a salad, I found this place, and we happened to be right down the street. I kinda fell in love with the cute neighborhood it's in... except for the crappy parking situation. We ended up parking probably a half mile away, and while the walk THERE was fine, and mostly downhill, I knew the walk BACK would be somewhat of a hike.. which it was. Definitely burned off some of the calories I consumed here. Its somewhat retro-looking, very casual, and quaint. I decided on the turkey sand (add avocado) and a cup of clam chowder, while Manfriend ordered the chef salad and a cup of broccoli cheese. We decided that I made the better choice as far entree goes... as I have a tendency to do. :) My sandwich was everything I wanted it to be. His salad was meh. It almost seemed pre-packaged, although I'm sure it wasnt... it just wasn't super impressive. Where they really excell though is the soup. Both the chowder and the broccoli cheese were more of an actual soup, than a thick, glob-ular (word? sure) TGI Friday's style thing, which I enjoyed. AND, best part, FREE all you can eat breadsticks... my favorite were the cheddar breadsticks.. perfect for dunking in yummy soup. Next time, I'd like to try the tomato... it looked so creamy and delicious. I can't wait to go back when Fall hits.. perfect for that type of weather! I left very full, headache eased. The Soup Kitchen is just what you would think it is and I love it. You can obviously eat soup there, but at such a low price that even I can eat regularly. So it's basically a gift to society and to college students in particular who can no longer afford "fancy" places like Applebee's. I always get the clam chowder...mmm. And I get a turkey sandwich to go with it. btw their sandwiches are amazing and made with all-fresh ingredients! The place can be a bit packed around lunch time, but don't let the long line scare you away! Because the area between the door and the counter is so small, it appears that there are about 30 too many people. In reality, most of them are buying soup to-go and the line moves really fast. So stick it out, will ya?! Oh and p.s.: Parking is ok...you can park in the lot next door if you have to. Because 33rd is just a terrible street and there's way too many people that drive on it, I advise hitting up that side street next to David's Kitchn and taking it to 39th instead. Maybe it's the change in the weather, but for whatever reason I have been on a mission for the best little soup spot. I figured, with a name THE Soup Kitchen, this place had to be a step in the right direction. The verdict...Not too shabby. I mean, I wasn't like the BEST soup EVER kind of thing, but it was good. More than that, the staff was really nice, and the place is clean, and the workers look clean, and nobody pulled a Soup Nazi thing when I asked to mix two soups together, so in my book, it's a win. The soup come with breadsticks, which were soft and fresh, but the flavor of the garlic one was just a little off. The next time I'm feeling soupy I would definitely return. read more

I like the soup here alright; I am a fan of the tomato, chicken noodle, and broccoli cheese soups. A bowl is priced under $4 and comes with bread sticks. The bread sticks are pretty great and I do like the sandwiches too. In particular the turkey or SKS are pretty tasty. There are a few problems with the Soup Kitchen that have been covered before: the parking is bad, the line is outrageous which I attribute to the good soup but also some slow service. One major problem I have with this place is that even if you call in a to-go order, you still have to wait in the outrageous line to pick up your food. These factors make this place just alright. I actually think I could run to a grocery store and buy a can of gourmet soup in the time it takes to get the same quality soup here. It also seems to me the wait times double when it rains or snows. My workplace ordered food to-go from here today. Ordering over the phone is very simple, they are always cheerful and helpful. We actually eat here about 3 times a month. This review is based on take out and not dining in. I LOVE their chicken noodle soup. I get a bowl every time and can drink the broth as I eat the soup. It has such great flavors and they don't go cheap when it comes to how many noodles, chicken and veggies are in the soup. For the sandwich, I got the turkey breast and added avocado. A lot of people at work raved about the Soup Kitchen, so I don't know if that built up my expectations, but it was not what I expected. I got the chicken club sandwich and a bowl of clam chowder. The sandwich tasted like the meat was microwaved, slathered in watered down ranch dressing, then tossed in a bun. The chowder was very bland and had hardly any texture for what you'd expect from a soup that's supposed to have chunks of clams, potatoes, or other vegetables. Overall it was disappointing. The place is a dive...but in that OH SO GOOD WAY! The Soup Kitchen is a Hole in the Wall that serves up food that will bring you back again and again. The sandwiches are hardy and the soup is HOT and delicious, and the bread sticks are as fresh as fresh can be. If you come away hungry it will be your own fault. The menu offers a good selection to satisfy every craving. The dining room is tiny, so don't be surprised if you have to wait a bit for a seat. If you show up at High Noon you're probably going to end up eating in your car because the place fills up and fills up fast. If you're on a short lunch break, service is FAST FAST FAST. I rarely get stomach ache therefore i can safely assume the food was bad. Not to mention they got my tuna melt sandwich wrong twice! One of my favorite local restaurants. The food is fresh, fast, and delicious. The restaurant is always busy during the lunch hour, and it's easy to understand why. Apart from the amazing food, what I like most about the Soup Kitchen is the friendly staff. Today there was an elderly customer with a nasty cough eating at a table by me. The soups are all delicious. The chicken noodle soup has a good portion of chicken and the broth is addictive. The broccoli cheese soup is a little too thick for my liking but the flavors were there. It's not really spacious inside so don't bring a big group. Call ahead during lunch time so you're not waiting in line and if you do call ahead, ask whoever is on the other end of the line to repeat your order bc if I hadn't asked, they would've gotten my order wrong but maybe I was talking to a new employee? The downside to my chicken sandwich was that the bread was very soggy.. Like it was dipped in water but the chicken, ham and Swiss tasted good. Very nice staff, but typical soup menu. Was hoping for exotic and creative soups, but instead got something I expect came from a bag. The staff was nice, staying open an extra 5 min to sell me some soup, and also nice enough to tell me they are a lunch spot, and not open for dinner (I came in at 5 to six). So I was willing to give the soup a break on tastyness (since I was not eating it at it's prime), but even with a pass, it was unimpressive. The Soup Kitchen's cream of tomato soup is the best tomato soup I have ever had. I found out that their secret ingredient is cream cheese and it is delicious. I love the soup and the bread sticks, but I am not a fan of the atmosphere. I would suggest getting your soup to go. It always smells a bit like Pine Sol at the Soup Kitchen...oh well, at least we know that the floors are clean. read more

I love eating at the soup kitchen because it's very affordable for the food you get. I get the chicken avocado and you tell both the chicken and avocado are fresh. The Yelp review says three stars but we are going to call it three AND A HALF, for a lunch spot is is better than just OK but does not rise to the level of really good. The concept is great, soup and sandwiches for lunch in a quick grab and go setting, I like it. The only problem is, good concept, so-so food. The soup was more broth and less good stuff and the sandwich was OK but the bead was not what I would expect from a soup & sandwich place. I tried the Vegetable Beef soup and as I said, it was perfectly good, the menu says, "A hearty variety soup made from seared chunks of lean beef and a fresh assortment of vegetables." When you describe your soup as "Hearty" and say that it has "Chunks" of lean beef then you should try and make it hearty with chunks of lean beef, it was a tasty broth but hearty it was not. I had the Egg Salad sandwich, I am an egg salad fan and the egg salad was good but the bread seem stale, its hard to enjoy a good sandwich when the bread seems like it is three days old. While this is not the best review of a place I have ever written I want to close by saying that I really did like it, it just was not as good as it could be if the owners put a little effort into the joint. There's some cool things and eh things that lead me to feel more like 3 1/2. That concept is kind of cool. It's a relaxed environment and this location looks like it was once a tiny house. It's a great place for you and a few co workers, but that's about it. In my opinion, a tad overpriced, but hot food is hot and fresh. Make sure they have something you want in stock, more than once they have said yes and at the end didn't have it. Some of the workers are ok, but what is I assume the manager is a nice guy, wants you to be his guest. If you get something to go, make sure it's sitting right in the bag...
