Gotta move them up a star. They seem to have improved in the kitchen bringing in a newer chef to make the needed changes. We saw that they were having a weekend special of 50% off breakfasts for the next few weeks as they introduce a weekend breakfast menu. The first time we went my wife tried the Benedict and I tried the loco moco at the recommendation of the previously mentioned new chef. He told me that it is more traditional with the "correct" gravy. I was impressed with his passionate decisive response. And I was rewarded with the best darn Loco Moco I have ever had. The benedict was very good too. A proper hollandaise has just the right lemon amount and this one did. I also tried the bloody mary and it was worth getting again. This week we went in again to try some more dishes to get a good idea of the breakfast menu. This time I ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs while my wife ordered up the New York steak and soft scrambled eggs. We both also shared a plate of french toast. And you know what? The star of this whole meal was the syrup served with the the french toast. Everything else was good working mans food. The french toast was picture perfectly cooked as were all of the other dishes. But there was a little something missing. For example the chicken fried steak was good...but it seemed to be not freshly hand made. I know...what do I expect these days? Well, I really like a freshly breaded chicken fried steak. All this said...the South 40 seems to be moving in the right direction with it's food and it's staff. The first couple of times I went in soon after opening, the place seemed to be a little hectic in how it was being ran. Staff were chatting up each other and talking loudly about things that weren't really customer friendly. But the last two times the service has been excellent! Super attentive bar tender the first time and today we had a wonderful server who took great care of us while getting other larger tables. Stopped in for the Reno Food Week specials of Maui Pulled Pork Sandwich & Maui-Rita. Large restaurant location with three distinct sections. There's a casual restaurant and full bar up front, video game section, and a covered warehouse section with pin bowling and other games. All-in-all a great place to hang out. Most people enjoy the back room with a very casual hang out atmosphere with its own bar and a live music stage. Owner says they are working on improvements to that back section and I have seen some improvements since my last visit. There was a graduation celebration there this weekend which look like a great venue for a special event. Gaming section has state of the art games with VR, large screen games for two and some traditional video games. Looks like it has a ticket exchange for prizes, etc. Front section is a casual restaurant with full bar and big screens strategically located to watch the game. Our Pulled Pork sliders were okay. Needed more sauce or something to boost the flavor. Maui-Rita was good. I like sweet tropical drinks so the fruit purée was a welcome addition to this tropical version of a Rita. Staff is friendly and attentive. The high ceilings and warehouse feel is light and bright with a distinctive modern flare. Great place to meet friends for a drink and grab an app or two. I did see an outdoor area with cornhole and picnic benches. Don't know if it welcomes pooches but it looked like a great place to hang out with a cold beer in the summer. read more

Blah. The pictures in the Yelp photos are of a nice bar. Now they have gaming machines at every spot on the bar. You can't sit at the bar unless you game. The atmosphere is just blah. My friend hosted her birthday gathering here. I really didn't know what to expect, by just reading the name I assumed it was a bar. And it is a bar but more. This place has a small bowling area, an arcade for children, food, and music. They have a very simple open floor concept, where you can sit, eat, drink and socialize. Toward the back they have the kids arcades. They have their own parking and fun for the whole family. What more can you ask for. I plan on coming back since I didn't get to try the food. Now, first walking into this place made me nervous. We stood at the host stand for maybe 5-10 minutes before one of the gals got to us. She seemed frustrated and was running around like crazy. Shortly after I realized that just she and the bartender were tending to the whole restaurant section by themselves. So I can see how she would be a bit frazzled and thought nothing more of it! They did a great job taking care of us after that and we had a great time! The food was good! The cheese fries probably being my favorite thing that we got. This is a really cool concept. You can sit in the Bar area, or the family friendly dining room. Then there is an Arcade for after dining family fun! This location was very clean and organized and safety conscious too! The staff was all very friendly and happy to help. The menu is vast and has a bit of something for most tastes! Portions are good and the food was hot and tasty. The wine list is quite comfortably priced and they have a good selection on the bar! An extensive Whiskey selection and they offer a large ice cube! We took a tour in the Arcade for some family fun. I was impressed at the system they use. I wish they had prepared better before making it available for the paying public. The dance machine in the arcade had no sound. The exchange for cards wasn't working. We spent $40 for nothing. The excuse they gave us was, "it's an incentive for the guests to return for the real opening" ...Why charge money for the arcade if everything isn't functioning correctly?? My husband had the steak sandwich and he could barely bite through it. It had so much gristle. I had the French dip had no flavor. The Ajou had no flavor tasted like water or beef broth. My son had the pulled pork with the coleslaw and had no flavor. Had the pulled pork and said it was just OK. My daughter had the french fries and the fried mushrooms with artichoke and calamari. She said that was good. husband had to send a steak back and got another one with less gristle. Place is clean and huge! I love the dining area for the adults. The part where they allowed kids didn't have windows and they were playing football on TV, I wasn't such a big fan. Maybe something more enjoyable for little kids would be nice. Service was good. I think a little understaffed but servers were still helpful and nice. Food was good. Got the nachos and the steak salad and my 6-year old loved the salad, I did too :) steak was properly done and the dressing was yummilicious. The nachos were crunchy and cheesy! Having visited South 40 a number of times since they first opened their doors I don't have much to say. The prices are a bit much for what the food is. The location has a lot going for it, and there is plenty to do inside (some arcade games and bowling). What's really remarkable is how unremarkable it is. I'm nearing ten trips there and I can't pull out any memorable details of the foods that I've tried beyond the pizza. Their pizza isn't expensive, it's very simple (which is a good things), it tastes very good, and it's plenty for two people or one really hungry person who never gets the type of pizza they want because nobody else likes it! *ahem* It has become my go-to when visiting this restaurant. For rest of the food, off the top of my head I've had the pulled pork sandwich, nachos, some sort of salad (Cobb perhaps), chicken wings, burger, and something else. From all of that the only the details I can recall is that the salad was actually pretty great. It wasn't a tiny joke of a salad, everything was fresh, tasted great, and arranged shockingly very well (I distinctly remember being impressed at how it looked). None of the food has ever been something to complain about. However, I don't feel like anything sticks out. Every single menu item could use a little punching up of some sort. Something to elevate it. For example, the pulled pork sandwich tastes exactly like what I can do in my slow cooker by just dumping a bottle of BBQ sauce in it. It should be better than that. It should be a reason to come to South 40. There's nothing on menu that is "you gotta try this!" As far as the staff goes they have all been very friendly, but every single time we've had a question (which is at least once per visit) it requires the person to scurry off and ask someone else. "What beers do you have?" to "how much is this during happy hour?", to "can I add ham to my pizza?" always required the person to check with someone in the back. That's fine, better to have the correct answer, but they were all very basic things you'd think everyone would know. read more

This place is such a hidden brunch gem! One of my good friends who actually yelps as well recommended this place for a girls brunch. I have seen the place driving by when going and coming from work, but I also remember seeing it when I went to Swift Sportsdome and was curious what this place was. They do bottomless mimosas for $16 and their breakfast menu is seriously a brunch lovers paradise with the expected brunch dishes you would want. I also found out this place does a dave and busters type vibe, and have a arcade for people to play and hangout spot for adults Whenever I go to brunch, I usually prefer to get a benedict , but this occasion I was feeling more of the country fried steak, but I knew it could help with the mimosas if I had a much more filling meal. But with my honest opinion, I will say, although my country fried steak was good, I would not say that it is the best country fried steak I have ever had. The triple dipper--salsa was a bit spicy, guacamole had a little bit of an odd aftertaste, queso was bland. The wedge was great with a tangy blue cheese dressing. This was our first time coming here. We were looking for a place to eat, where the kids could be entertained while waiting for food. When you pull up, it's not clear where the front entrance is. We ended up parking by the "backyard entrance" and walked through the venue to get to the restaurant portion. The arcade was really cool and the prizes were reasonable for the amount of tickets. Some games were broken, without any signage that they're out so I'm not sure if they were aware or not. The backyard area has a bar, a stage with a large projector screen above it, mini bowling, a few games, and a small children's play area (geared towards ages 1.5 to 4 ish). The restaurant area was nice. We ordered the farmhouse chips, which were delicious. We also ordered a few Cobb salads, a ranch hand burger, a pulled pork sandwich, and a kids meal. The food was pretty good. The cone salads were a large meal-sized portion. The pulled pork was tasty. Unfortunately, the burger was rare, although we ordered a medium - totally pink and cooked only on the outside. The kids meal was the last plate to be brought out, after every adult had gotten their meal, even though on the menu it specifically states that kids meals are brought out before other dishes. The kids meal comes with dessert, either ice cream or strawberries with marshmallow dip. We were informed that it was only ice cream due to the strawberries being out of season. I would have appreciated another option to replace the strawberries instead of only ice cream available. At the end of the meal, we didn't even get the ice cream and the waitress never mentioned it or asked if we wanted it. Overall, we'd be open to returning in the future, but I think there are a lot of little tweaks that can be made to make a better experience for the customer. read more

We arrived about 15 mins after the game started, and there was still plenty of seating available. Upon viewing the menu, I was impressed and excited since it's above average from a typical Bar and Grille I ordered the French Dip sandwhich and my husband ordered the New York Steak sandwich. We both got the beer battered fries because we saw them as the waitress walked by with someone's order. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive, and our food came out fairly quick. French Dip: The roast beef was sliced perfectly and not fatty at all and I enjoyed the white cheddar. As for the au jus...Bland. A big reason of why I get a French Dip is because of a flavorful au jus, and this didn't meet the standard, which is too bad because the sandwich itself is decent. New York Steak sandwich: Blah and very forgettable. Not a bad sandwhich but simply lacked flavor. Beer battered Fries: Looked amazing, but again bland and lacked flavor. I'm giving 3 stars since the server was nice and allowed us to order happy hour a few minutes after it was over. The sampler happy hour had fried calamari, mushroom and artichoke but it was over cooked and the oils tasted like it needed to be changed. I ordered the salmon which was served with vegetables and risotto. The salmon was over cooked so very dry and lacked flavor. The arcade area had a good number of games covering all age groups. So I've only been to the back side of this place for drinks and bar food. The wings are pretty good, I had some sweet Thai chili flavored that were cooked well with plenty of sauce. Where they can use some help: the bar. It's a makeshift temporary bar where staff constantly have to run back and forth during big nights. Came here for my husband's Christmas party. We had a blast! The food was amazing. The band was a little loud for the area - we ended up leaving the area to play games when they played. As for the games... a great assortment of games. Well spaced out to allow people to watch. A few of the games would work when they wanted to... Others didn't work at all even though they were fully lit up and said they were ready for play. That kinda sucked because it was two racing games, Halo and Guitar Hero - all games we wanted to play.
