We came to South Beverly Hills on Memorial Day weekend without reservations and were told the wait would be about 1 hour and 15 minutes. We decided to sit at the bar instead and only waited around 15 minutes, which worked out perfectly. We shared the artichoke spinach dip and it was so creamy and flavorful. I had the salmon, which was delicious, and the French dip looked incredibly juicy and soft. The ambiance was vibrant and energetic, making it such a fun spot for a holiday weekend dinner. Hillstone has been on my list for a very long time to try. Have been to The Honor Bar once and loved it. Really looking forward to this experience while in the area for an evening event. Could not get a rez for 2 on a Tues night at 5:30 pm, so crossed our fingers and winged it. Luckily they were able to seat us at a 2 person booth. First impression is that the decor is gorgeous. Moody, dark and beautiful artwork everywhere. The place is packed and continues to be throughout our meal. That's where the positives unfortunately end. Service was spotty and very PERFUNCTORY. They forgot our appetizer so when we asked, they brought it 10 minutes after our dinner arrived. In fairness, they comped it, which we appreciated. But whenever we needed anything (ketchup for the fries, a second glass of wine, etc), we were looking and looking around for our server. 2nd glass of wine was literally dumped on our table with no smile or words by front of house manager. UNPLEASANT. The food was expensive and 2/5 at best for what they are charging. A $28 kale & chicken salad was BORING. "Fork & Knife Ribs" for $47 were ORDINARY. The deviled eggs were a travesty. They look better in the picture, but honestly at the table, they looked and tasted quite sad. Very difficult to mess up deviled eggs. Everything was served piping hot (fries, coffee) which was a plus. Key lime pie was decent, though not a WOW. Glasses of wine were also unfortunately on the bland side and BORING versions of themselves (pinot grigio, sangiovese). All in, this was an over $200 dinner for very mediocre food and overall poor and indifferent service. A huge DISAPPOINTMENT. Rather than selling us on the brand so that we could be repeat customers at other Hillstones again and again, this totally turned us off. So, so many restaurants in LA and everywhere to try. We went to dinner at South Beverly Grill with another couple. Before our reservation, we visited their wine shop, where we tasted 3 different wines and bought a bottle for dinner. If you buy a bottle, the corkage fee is waived. For dinner, we ordered grilled ribeye steaks with frites, a spicy kale and chicken salad, shrimp cocktail, and broccoli. All were delicious. Got a reservation for this place for our last dinner in LA. Had to wait a bit after we checked in as it was quite busy even though it was an early dinner time. After being seated, the lady for our table was super friendly with great energy all while being helpful. We ordered several different plates and everything was really good. Brought my visiting parents from Hawaii here 2 nights ago, and once again did not disappoint, in fact, somehow exceeded my experiences there to-date. Writing an update because once again, consistency was the name of the game (with service and food quality) but how is it I find myself blown away by the thoughtfulness and how the staff manages to level up even from previous (already high) expectations? This time we had Alex as our server, who was just so...pleasant. He didn't rush us at all, in fact encouraged us to start with apps and he'd check on us for the rest. My parents are big on sharing vs. dedicated entrees and just the fact we were presented with 3 share plates with SEPARATE au jus and horseradish for EACH of us, and the French Dip cut in 3 without us ever expecting they'd do something like that for us?! Just that sort of thoughtfulness goes such a long way. My parents were thoroughly impressed and commented on how the staff gels so well and in a way not cookie cutter stiff service parameters. I'm a big Houston's fan, so when my girlfriend took me here for a weekday lunch I was thrilled. Ambiance very sleek, modern and dark just like Houston's. The menu is very similar as well, offering up some of the same dishes as well as some that are exclusive to this restaurant. Hiramasa Roll (best sushi roll imo) 10/10 Crab Cake 9/10 (you get tons of crap. I just wish there was a little more to it. A little more seasoning or a kick) Spicy Margarita 10/10 (perfection!) 10/10 lunch experience. The steak was cooked to perfection, paired with their classic crispy french fries & spicy mayo sauce to go on the side. I really love when restaurants have a signature custom or theme so the spicy mayo always makes me happy. The spinach artichoke dip with chips is delicious. It comes out really hot & fresh so careful not to burn your mouth. Unlike majority of spinach artichoke dips I have tried, this one is more on the wet side as opposed to the cream-cheese texture. I loved it. The restaurant setting is classy with a dimly lit room & relaxing music. The patrons of this restaurant seem to all be respectful people which contributes to the overall vibe. We arrived at 8:45 for a highly anticipated dinner with our Son, Jesse and were certainly not disappointed... Here goes: Valet parking... great Entered a very busy foyer, gave our name and was immediately greeted and seated at our reserved table... nice again! Upon sitting, our server, Felicia, came right over. While pouring chilled water she inquired if we'd like anything from the bar? Of course! A nice Cabernet for the lady and the boys were ordering an Old Fashioned and a Negroni. A wide variety of choices for starters and mains. The group of restaurants are infamous for their BBQ "fall off the bone" ribs. Feeling like something different, how about their Dover Sole, flown in daily from Dover, across the pond!!! Their salads are as beautiful as they are epic. Mom and Son ordered the chopped salad with shaved chicken and a to die for peanut sauce dressing... We ordered another fan favorite, their homemade guacamole dip, with warm pita chips. Incredible. We all got the baby back ribs, and, they were awesome and 1 full rack, fries and coleslaw for $45. We had plenty to take home for lunch today. Can't wait to!! Of course, too full for three desserts, so three forks and their own cake . South Beverly Grill, part of the Hillstone chain, and formerly known as Houston's before being rebranded in name only (the decor and menu are the same as always) is the kind of place that pretends to be much more than it is. Dark woods and muted lighting, white linen napkins, weighty utensils, and sharply dressed servers are deployed to make you sort of forget that the menu is built around burgers, French dip sandwiches, spinach dip and baby back ribs. All of it tastes good, is fresh and well-prepared, but it's the same food they were serving 20+ years ago, at vastly elevated prices; with so many other interesting restaurants around town, dinner here feels a bit like a consolation prize. But my wife loves their burgers, so here we were, waiting for seats at the bar because the walk-in wait for a table was over 2 hours (people do love this place). I ordered a martini, which was very nicely made with a generous pour and fresh, good tasting olives. When were were eventually seated, we ordered the Spinach Dip (which I forgot to photograph) and a burger, which we shared. Burger was tasty, but now comes with more accoutrements, possibly to keep the overall size similar while reducing the weight of the burger itself. Nonetheless, it was cooked exactly as ordered and tasted great for what it was: a burger far less creative and satisfying than dozens of others around town (the burger at The Benjamin being a prime example). Fries on the side were thin, crispy and nicely salted. Service was friendly and attentive, and the meal was perfectly fine, if mostly unmemorable. read more

Stopped in myself on a Saturday night and was able to get a spot at the bar. Did not wait long. Robert took great care of me. Started with some of the best sushi- my favorite Osaka style pressed sushi. The knife and fork ribs always go fast, so I ordered that with a side salad and their famous slaw instead of fries- delicious- did not disappoint. My neighbors at the bar were curious how I was putting this meal away by myself- it was so good. Speaking of the bar, I could not help but notice how well put together and inviting this place was. The staff kept food and drinks coming and did not miss a beat. Got a hot towel to clean my hands of bbq sauce and then it was a double espresso and a slice of key lime pie to end things wonderfully. Ambience is romantic with low lighting and the service is very hospitable and professional. However, the restaurant is so busy it feels like a conveyor belt. Some of the food is good, but other menu items are tired and not fresh. As a vegan, there are VERY limited options, which is the basis of my harsh review. As a non-vegan I would give this place 4 stars. The cucumber roll was surprisingly good for a non-Japanese restaurant, but to have that be the extent of vegan options is pretty bad for such a popular restaurant. The only vegan main is putting three vegetable side dishes on a plate and calling it an entree. The Hillstone brand in general could do a better job of at least making the vegetarian items easy to be vegan by not including animal products in random things like sauces and dressings. read more

I was quite skeptical of this roll and loved it. The texture worked great, and the flavor was delicious. Grilled Chicken Salad - 4 stars. I love the trifecta restaurants! Honor bar, Hillstone, and this! I've been to honor bar and Hillstone already and now it was time to check this place off. The Caesar came unchopped which I was surprised about I prefer the chopped version of it. The spinach artichoke dip is my favorite menu item it always hits and it's a must order. The crunchy shrimp roll is so good and the portion is big. The French dip lacked a little flavor compared to the one I had at Hillstone but still good! The burger was good too just kind of hard to eat because of how tall it is. My paper plane was made well. Service was good we were seated very quickly. I like the dim atmosphere. Ive been to SBG twice within the last 4 months This place would get 5 stars on ambiance and food but they get dinged for service The first time I went was around lunch on a day they were pretty empty (which was surprising because I know how busy they can get during the lunch rush Took our host a while to seat us even though there were open tables Then we didnt have a consistent waiter They seemed to be switching every 10 minutes or so Which wouldnt be an issue in itself but it didnt seem like they were in communication with each other so we got a few dishes placed that didnt belong to us The second time I was there, we had a reservation scheduled and they didn't see us until 30 minutes after our reservation time it was during lunch on a weekday so there was a bit of a time constraint on our end again food and ambience is great service could be better read more

I consider myself a "regular" at South Beverly Grill. My husband and I dine here at least once a month, and sometimes many more times than that, since they first opened. Let's just say we are die hard fans of the food and ambience. The service is also extremely professional. What really has started to rub me is that the experience is anonymous. Everyone inside the restaurant treats me like an out of town guest - not like a guest who was there on Saturday last week and back on Friday this week - for years. The one exception is the valet parking attendant Jose who greets me warmly each week. The whole thing gives me the feeling that the company cares about the service and food they provide but care little for the people they are giving it to. read more

Love this place! It's run by the same company that owns Houston's if you've ever been there. They're great at consistently good American food, mostly grilled meat and fish options, although they really have a little bit of everything. One thing they're known for, but don't always advertise on their menu is their grilled artichokes. They have to be in season and available because they source them from this one special farm that grows delicious baby artichokes. I would definitely ask your waiter if you enjoy artichokes, they come out really tender and a little smoky from the grill and they're served with a delicious aioli. The restaurant is great for apps and steaks. I always get the spinach artichoke dip with tortilla chips because it always hits the spot. Their sushi is good too, I liked the spicy tuna which came with some roe on top. Last time I tried the deviled eggs which were creamy and delicious. As a main, I ordered the salad with grilled chicken as I was so overindulged with the apps I wanted something lighter for a main course. From past experience, if you like red meats, I would recommend their ribeye, Filet Mignon, & New York Strip as they're all delicious and they know how to grill their meats. They come out very well seasoned and cooked just to how you like them. Their service is excellent. All the waiters are super attentive and very friendly. On Friday night, they were busy but we got seated within 10 minutes. We had a reservation. I ordered the salmon which whatever that sauce is on top came cool but the rest of my food was hot. Overall, the taste was pretty good Olivia I believe her name was was our server. She was kind, but we had to summon her a few times because she didn't come around enough. This will be a place I would come back to if I was in the area but wouldn't make a special trip for it. I also had a spicy margarita. I asked if she had tajin she said no I asked for nothing on the room and it came with salt, but it's not a big deal. But she came back. She never said oh it has salt. Let me change it. I just kept it. There was a Cobb salad that was ordered. Also not pictured here, but he asked for no tomatoes and indeed came tomatoes, but they were big so he could pull them off. They're dressings appear to be housemate also but overall pretty tasty. read more
