Leaving my cycling class this morning, I decided that instead of heading home to inhale leftover Chinese food for lunch, I should continue my healthy streak and get an acai bowl down the street! South Block is a "California Style" Juice Bar, bringing the juice revolution to the DC area. I really enjoy the idea/mission behind South Block - "small changes could have big impacts in a community. South Block's mission is to create "healthier" communities, one block at a time!" They serve acai bowls, smoothies, and cold pressed juice. This was my first time at South Block and it blew me away! While I've definitely indulged in a healthy smoothie many a times, acai bowls were new for me! I ordered the Killer B. Bowl, which had blended acai, strawberry, blueberry, and caveman milk (house cashew milk). On top, it had granola, strawberry, blueberry, bee pollen, and raw honey. Wowza! The combination of the sweet/tartness of the fruit, with the crunch of the granola, and topping it off with the indulgent honey was devine! The container is absolutely huge, so while it is a little pricey, you get a lot of bang for your buck. It's also definitely filling, so you won't be looking for something else to eat for a while. The service was great and I really enjoyed the different seating options. Overall, I loved this place! It's been on my radar for a while, and I'm glad I tried it out! I was the first person in line. Ordered a small smoothie and a small açaí bowl. It took 25 minutes to receive both. I ordered the bowl with no granola. As soon as I was handed the bowl I walked to my car to eat it. It was already melted into a soup like consistency. I could tell they put granola in it and scraped it out later. There were chunks of granola throughout the bowl. They definitely put more of an emphasis on to-go orders and neglect the people who order in store. They also don't offer any coffees which was not advertised. read more

I walked in, ordered, and had to wait over 10 minutes for... a smoothie. In the words of our wonderful president, "Come on, man." I always come on the same day of the week, same time. This time, I didn't recognize any of the staff. Looks like they may have had a mass resignation. Who wants to wait over ten minutes for a smoothie? It's not even real food. I can get a burger grilled in less time. Get it together, folks. I have been coming here for close to two years. I will not be coming back. My dad was in town and he wanted something sweet. We saw some people walking around old town with some açai bowls that looked amazing so we asked them where they got them from and they said South Block so we walk there as fast as we could. The music as soon as we walked in was amazing, they were playing Black R&B and hip-hop artists which made me feel very welcomed. The food was a great follow up, all of our a açai bowls were extremely tasty and fresh. However, they are pretty pricey. Will definitely be returning to try more. read more

I have gotten an açaí bowl here nearly once a week for several months, but the quality was gone way down. I've received bowls that are half full, contain full pieces of unwashed spinach, and have big chunks of fruit in the smoothie part. The final straw was receiving a bowl with a flying insect (maybe a mosquito?) attached to a banana slice. I'm surprised they didn't see it because it's at the top of the bowl. Not my first rodeo with the South Block brand however it was my first time at this location. It did seem a bit awkward when walking in since its right next to a yoga studio but I was so excited to get a acai bowl from southblock because it always looks so tasty in pictures...however somehow my order was mixed up or made into another order. Originally I ordered the magic dragon which is suppose to be blended organic pitaya (aka dragon fruit), coconut milk, agave, strawberries, mangos topped Handmade Granola, goji berries, coconut, strawberries. and for $1.00 more there was suppose to be spurilina. My only complaint to the cashier was do you think my bowl will be funny colored. It was question/statement I didn't want her to fix it just make sure the spurilina was in it. So then I overheard the cashier ask a question about my order once I had already paid. Didn't really say anything else about my order. Once my order was called I walked up picked up the bowl and got really confused as to why my bowl looked like a basic bowl or a warrior bowl . See picture below. Now normally I would ask but the lady repeated the order as magic dragon bowl add spurilina. Yeah...not what I received and especially since you make bowls wouldn't you know something looks strange about it? But by the time I dug into my bowl it was too late the line was piling in and now they were calling names out for orders. Imagine that the cashier never asked for my name and never even gave me a number .She was so puzzled by my order that it got all kinds of magically mixed up I guess thats the magic of the dragon bowl it magically turns into a basic bowl topped with blueberries,strawberries banana and granola. Luckily for south block the acai bowl was actually pretty tasty and the granola was good also. I also happened to be hungry and slightly inconvienced to bring my bowl back and complain it was completely wrong, I am however peeved that I paid $13.00 for a basic bowl that normally cost $11 and did not contain spurilina. So if anything i'm more annoyed that orders got all mixed up somehow and I ended up with the wrong bowl. I guess the best way is without human interaction and to just order online off their website perhaps I might actually get the correct bowl. read more

My husband and I have been living in the Del Ray area for about two months now and I have walked by South Block more times than I can count and never walked in. Perhaps it has been the cold but I feel like I really missed out. It all started as a typically Saturday... after reluctantly saying Yes to getting a smoothie when the weather was 35 degrees out, we walked over. There was a bit of a line, which is somewhat of a good thing, but it was then I realized that there was a yoga studio connected. Like, is this Heaven, did I die? Amazing... I ordered the PBJ Acai bowl and the husband got the strawberry smoothie. While the total was just under $20 for both, the price was worth the taste. I know what you are thinking... $20 for a liquid breakfast... You must be a millennial... but hear me out. The granola is fantastic and clean and mouthwatering. South Block Needs to come to Maryland like Downtown Silver Spring I'd always be there!! Anyways every morning just about I'm here I try to always let SB be my first meal of the day if not cereal. When I go in everyone's so pleasant it's always immaculate everything is neatly packed, together and never in disarray even if I'm there when they have shipments. I order the Almond Butter Bowl but I make Swaps and changes and so far it's worked fine for me. I get the almond bowl but instead of almond milk I get cashew milk , extra blended In bananas, strawberries and blueberries on the side!! No cacao nibs no almond anything!! Extra granola on top with extra bananas!!! (Can you tell it's one of my favorite fruits & due to potassium and it's bomb with Frosted Flakes). They make it right every time and for the mini you get enough of Açaí to be full I LOOOVE that they have thinking within the building to write on the paper! I'm definitely looking forward to new Beginnings my mental health has been tough!!!. Last year I had read about South Block having a new tea flavor for the summer and I wanted to make my first trip. I didn't because I'm never in NoVA like that so boo hoo. This year, as if it were my new year's resolution, I've been in NoVA more than years previous and I've had the opportunity to explore and experience. South Block since I kept it near my heart was one of the first places I hit up. When I find myself eating something I love, I immediately think of how I need to have this dish before my journey on this earth is through. Açaí are just one of those dishes. The first one I had floored me. I was trying to find myself abroad and fell in açaí bowls, simple indeed. In the years since I have resigned myself to be able to enjoy a good açaí bowl stateside. Slice like a sword through the mediocrity, South Block delivers awesome açaí bowls. What I love is the ability to add and alter the ingredients. There are about 5 or 6 specialty bowls and I like a few of the ones they offer but I don't care for berries (except Himalayan Goji Berries) or bananas on top. I love smoothies as a way to consume veggies that I don't enjoy eating. In my brief book, you can't go wrong with Cacao Nibs, Hemp Hearts, Bee Pollen, HGBs. Very cute shop and very nice employees! I love that they work with the yoga studio next door to promote an active and healthy lifestyle. I aspire to live the peaceful, mystical life of a yogi. I had the PBJ bowl, which was $10. The blend was delicious, and they were very generous with the toppings. Where I come from, acai bowls are a lot less expensive. $10 for an acai bowl is a bit much for me, and I don't think I'd be willing to come here regularly because of the outrageous prices. Acai is a new trend here among the mainlanders, which would explain why these silly haoles (no hate) would pay so much for it. The best parking is across the street from the building. South Block provides the café portion of Ease Yoga Café which was once was occupied by Senzu Juicery. In the few weeks I've been stopping in, I've seen patronage steadily rise and have no doubt South Block will have continued success in this location. I love that they brought the puppy smoothie concept over from their Falls Church location as a large sunlit patio means me and my pooches can have a healthy snack together. The décor largely remains the same as Senzu, but the music selection lets me know it is South Block. I am hopeful that eventually the "deer" antler bicycle handlebar trophy plaque is on order (or maybe a bicycle chain light fixture) as it still feels a little to serene/feminine in comparison to the other locations. I will say that I attended yoga class on opening day and I'm happy to report the noise level was acceptable (I could barely here the nearly 20 people in the café). I can't wait for the spring/summer seasons to truly enjoy some time on the patio playing cornhole. South Block is locally owned, so it truly fits in with the other successful locally owned Del Ray businesses. I'd imagine they would participate in many of the local festivals held in Del Ray. The foot traffic on Mount Vernon closer to Glebe Rd was craving something to hold patronage to the area (a.k.a please, don't get in your car and drive away, something good is just around the corner within walking distance.) What still surprises (and delights) me most is the number of high school and college aged patrons at this location! So, the same fresh, non-HPP juices, perfectly blended smoothies and bowls as the other locations, just closer to "my" home. Craft Kombucha and Kate Bakes (Lemon Ginger Zinger is my recommendation) are available for purchase as well. Come for smoothie and stay for yoga is my new mantra. read more

When I'm feeling a little bougie after my weekend morning workouts, I'd probably be willing to splurge at South Block for an acai bowl or a smoothie. I've been to the South Block in Clarendon, and while both are consistent in the quality of their offerings, I appreciate that this location has more ample indoor/outdoor seating. You also don't feel like you're crawling over other bougie people to get your super green juice with spirulina. I had their Super Green Smoothie (pineapple juice, kale, mango, bananas) and found it to be perfectly refreshing; it was a decently sized snack that could hold me over until my early PM dinner. I am currently doing a 1.5 week juice cleanse and ordered 1 original juice cleanse ($55) and 1 Souper cleanse ($55) with 2 added ginger bombs to supplement my own home-made juices. All of the juices are very good but the Souper Cleanse is really awesome!! Adding the soups makes doing longer cleanses so much more manageable. I hope South Block keeps this cleanse on the menu because it is really a great option, especially for people doing their first cleanse or people doing longer cleanses. Also, the online customer service is phenomenal. I had a schedule issue and they got me my cleanses 2 days early. I am so happy to have this great juice bar in Del Ray now. They even have doggy smoothies :) The only reason it is not 5 stars is because it is pretty expensive. But overall, I love this place! read more

I wasn't super impressed with this place although I'm sure many other people like it. I'm no açaí connoisseur but I do like it. I was looking for a tropical type of bowl (as opposed to all the berry flavors) but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for, so I ordered the Warrior Bowl. It was $11. I was told they do not take cash. This irritated me. I ate as much of the bowl as I could, there was nothing wrong with it. Just average overall in my opinion. This place is awesome. I love the smoothies and Acai bowls. I had a PBJ Acai Bowl; it was fresh, delicious, and filling! I haven't had the juice yet, but I'll try at some point. I've only been here twice, but plan to visit again today. Parking is horrible, but this community is very nice. Park and walk! I had the warrior bowl and the green and detox juices. The warrior bowl was great. The granola was the best I've had in a smoothie bowl, really could tell it was homemade. The celery in the juices were a little overpowering in them both. They were still good but just wish that you could still taste some more of the other greens/lemon/mint. Next time I'd like to try one of their açaí bowls with the almond milk and possibly the beet juice. Still a nice cafe to sit back and relax at after some shopping and walking around.
