Took a shot with this place down near the water, about a 10 minute drive from downtown Patchogue. We were able to get a reservation only a few hours before going out on a Friday night. Always a plus. First impression was that parking was tough. There are signs everywhere and it seems there is very limited parking for the entire area. We had to call the restaurant, which told us to park in a lot that did not belong to them. I was a little worried about that. Fortunately, we saw a couple of village police officers (writing parking tickets - shocker!) who told us that if we were there for South Ocean Grill, we were OK to park there. Shrug. We didn't get a ticket, so they were true to their word. Inside the restaurant, it was smaller than I expected. Cozy is a good word for it, but definitely not cramped. Greeted by the friendly staff. Meghan was our waitress. She really hustled and was happy making recommendations. We tried the grilled Mexico City corn on the cob (her recommendation) and loved it! Could've eaten a second order of it. Delicious and unique, with a little kick. My wife ordered the Caribbean rib eye and I had THE bacon cheeseburger. It always feels a bit silly when a restaurant claims the have the BEST this or that, but I have to say, it was in the top three burgers I've ever had. Delicious bun, juicy burger, thick bacon (not too crispy) and a good sized pickle with BBQ sauce. My wife enjoyed her steak as well. For dessert, Meghan didn't have to twist my arm very hard to get me to order the key lime pie. This was just a shade on the disappointing side for me -- I like a very tart key lime pie, and this was a bit more on the mild, sweet side. Not bad, just not exactly how I like it. Overall, we had a great experience and will definitely be going back. Just wish the parking situation was a little easier. read more

Excellent find! Cutie "town style" restaurant with a modern flair. Well crafted menu with a simple selection for many tastes. All the ingredients were high quality and prepared with pride. I had the salmon which was perfectly done and the quinoa it came with was amazing. Not soggy or over seasoned. The atmosphere is very enticing. Especially their outdoor area. This restaurant has a very finished look. Clean and sleek with cozy and inviting touches. The only area "lacking" is the bar. They have a reasonable selection of beer and wine but they are not really equipped for cocktails (not necessarily a bad thing, just expectation tempering if that is your libation of choice). My husband and I were walking around the shore front park area and came across this pretty little place. Jackie, one of the owners talked with us a few minutes and was very sweet. We dined there a few days later and absolutely loved the food. We shared 2 apps, the crab cake with mango salsa and the calamari. The crab cake was delicious and Calamari crispy. We both ordered the fish sandwiches, also fresh, moist and a great portion size. I am buying a gift certificate for my parents, who can be picky but I'm confident they will be pleased. I noticed they were participating in LI restaurant week so we decided to give it a try. I was immediately pleased with the atmosphere of the restaurant. The inside is cozy and inviting and romantic. The menu is very seafood-heavy, which is right up my alley. I was overall pleased with my meal. I started with lobster bisque which was tasty but not the BEST I've ever had (I've had a lot of lobster bisque in my life). I had the spicy Thai skirt steak salad as my main course which was delicious! However, not a very large potion. Thankfully I got dessert as part of ordering off the restaurant week menu, but I would have left hungry if not. My boyfriend was pleased with his food, and he's a pretty picky eater (not a seafood fan, typically). My favorite part of the meal were the cocktails! i live literally a stones throw away from this new restaurant (they are hardly JUST a grill). My neighbors and I went, made reservations well in advance, and waltzed in to a completely renovated space. It was transformed into a quaint relaxing ambiance which had a relaxed elegant feel. Wood work, beautiful simple decor, and very stylish. The wait staff were amazing, and I'm a bit of a pill! I didn't want for anything!! There were 7 of us, and before we could stop ooohing and ahhing about the decor and get settled in our seats, there was warm fresh bread with accompanied dipping oil and butter. The bread in a word was heaven!! They had a lovely array of wine, beers, and once we decided on a bottle (we wound up having three,,,) the wait staff kept the level up to par in every glass on the table throughout the meal. The apps were wonderful- the dipping sauces with the calamari? To die for. Stuffed mushrooms were very good, but my favorite was the flatbread with sautéed onions and goat cheese. I can't wait to get this for dinner! Out of this world!! The mains were beautiful. The dishes were a beautiful Bronzino ( one with crab stuffing and one without) with a kale salad on the side which was perfectly dressed- I can't wait to have that again- Scallops over white beans - superb -the crab cakes rivaled those of oaklands, dare I say!!! Kale slaw on the side- The owners are an adorable duo of talent and have tremendous passion for the food industry, as it completely spills over into every last detail of the south ocean grill. Went here last night for the first time. My date and I split several apps and each had the filet mignon. We ordered the crab cakes and the corn. They were both amazing! But the corn was just out of this world!! It's an absolute must when you come here. The atmosphere is very cozy, it is a small place, but you don't feel crammed in or on top of each other. Our bartender, Jules, was awesome! Not only was she making drinks for the entire restaurant, she was acting as server and bus person to the entire place. She couldn't have been anymore accommodating than she was. We refused dessert initially, but Jules mentioned the skillet cookie and the key lime pie. We figured we'd try the cookie. Omg! Wow! Not all that. The one good thing I would say is that the food, as uncreative as it was, was seasoned well. For example my salmon dish tasted good, but really, a piece of salmon on top of some white beans and spinach of which was unrecognizable because it was so finely chopped. What is this the 90s. My plate mate's risotto not good. If you are going to make risotto it better be made well. This was simply just dry sticky rice. Not creamy and loose the way it is suppose to be. What a shame. Oh, and when you boost about your baking the bread daily, people should not have to request it...at least put it on your menu...also, when the bread arrived after we requested it after our dinner...during dessert, because we did not want to miss out on the wonderful daily baked bread, two slices of white toast arrived.. Really??? embarrassing! That's a joke! Finally, the desserts. Key lime was very good, house made so it was said. Other desserts not house made. Kind of sad, it is not a big restaurant, you should be able to make all desserts on premise. Tres Leches, come on, a ten year old could make it, very simple dessert to make. The only saving grace was we sat next to the little air forced fireplace to keep us warm. My spaghetti with shrimps and lobster had a sauce that tasted like pure oregano which overwhelmed the dish. And where was the bread to go with it? Who serves spaghetti without bread? Oh yea and my husbands marinated steak tasted plain and had no flavor . Lets not forget to mention the LOADED potato. Fantastic food! Made right from the heart. Went there last night with my husband and kids and we all very much enjoyed our meals. We met the restaurant owner and had to tell her how amazing and delicious the food was. We got there accidentally but eating there never felt more right. We enjoyed the artichokes, ribs, sea scallops, kale salad, crab cakes, and the drinks were awesome! Megan and Victoria took really good care of us and we we're pleased that the drinks were still great with a different staff member mixing them up during our return visit! Ordered curbside for my birthday. Woman on the phone was very nice. Food was ready when we got there. Now for the reason for 1 Star... the dinners were sloppily thrown into a box. I ordered the scallops with rock shrimp and risotto. It had 3 scallops and the smallest shrimp I ever saw. This was $33. The food tasted ok, but I ended up getting sick (throw up) a couple hours later. I was the only one who ate the seafood and I am normally a healthy person. I called the restaurant the next day just to let them know what happened. I just wanted them to be aware and to prevent someone else from getting sick. The same woman answered and she said a manager would get back to me... that was a week ago. I will never go back there again and have told my friends my horrible experience. I agree with Greg's review of Jan 6th. On a cold winter's night, South Ocean Grill made no accommodations for their customers whatsoever. My feet were in boots up to my knees and were freezing the entire time I was there--despite the blanket they provided (which I originally thought someone left behind draped over a chair). There were NO extra heaters, mind you, just a blanket. I had one drink, apple pie sangria, which I requested with a small amount of ice--it was full of ice that I scooped out myself which left very little sangria. My sister drank water. We had no appetizer and shared a dessert. My sister asked if she could substitute her potato side for mashed potatoes when ordering the filet mignon. She was told probably not because the mashed potatoes were made as a side for the meat loaf special ($36). Our waitress did come back and say they would make that substitution for her. When dinners were served, I couldn't help but scoop up a forkful of her mashed potatoes. They were tasteless and watery. I've had better instant potato buds. Both steaks, her filet mignon and my NY strip were fine, although mine was ordered medium and came closer to well. Roasted corn on the cob with strip steak was very tasty. Portions were definitely on the smaller side. I rarely finish my plate and did so with ease. A very costly and disappointing experience. Never again read more
