The food was good and the portions were ample. The pancakes were huge but not as flavorful as some other buttermilk cakes from other places. My only complaint was the coffee. My wife called it colored water. We mentioned it to the server and to the hostess and they both said nobody else had complained. The hostess mentioned that she thought the coffee was too strong so she usually watered it down. WRONG ANSWER! The strength of the coffee is not up to the hostess, it's up to the customers! We will bring our own coffee from the Starbucks next door if we return. The food will get you in the door, the coffee will get you back. And then there was the groupon for 15 bucks that they only credited us for 14. Not sure what happened there but we'll see what they say about this. read more

There aren't a ton of sit down breakfast place in the area, so we usually visit the same 3 places. We decided to try out Southern Belle. Sunday morning, we expected a wait. There was no wait(probably because it was 7degrees out) Anyway.... there were 5 of us. We were seated a booth that looked pretty small. A waitress noticed right away and asked if we wanted a bigger table. That was the end of the "exceptional" service. Once seated waitress came by to pour coffee. She spilled it onto my daughters menu which rolled it down her lap. She didn't seem to notice which was more alarming since it was HOT coffee. The food was average. Large portions, but not as flavorful as I had hoped. But back to the coffee...We had to flag down another waitress twice for refills. Why would you turn away customers on Mothers Day??? Came in at 10 min to 2:00 on Sunday 5/13 and was old that they were not seating additional customers, which doesn't make sense since they close at 3. I will no longer be a customer, and will be sure to let my friend know to look for other options if they are looking for a place to go. Stopped into Southern Belle's a few Sunday's ago for breakfast with my family. The first impression of the restaurant is a host, and they had 3 wonderful ones! For being young girls, they gave excellent customer service; Cracking jokes and making conversation while we waited. We enjoyed a cup of fresh coffee while we waited (Nice touch!) After about 10 minutes (20 min quote) we were seated. So quick! Their Southern Belle skillet was to die for! And their pancakes rocked. Our server was very attentive for it being such a busy day. Sooo the kids were hungry after church and I ventured off course to this place. It is a spacious dining location with wonderful natural light. The girls ordered Mickey Mouse pancakes and were very happy with their choice. They were huge, but I was disappointed that it didn't come with a choice of meat. I ended up ordering a side of bacon for them. I think a smaller pancake portion with a side of meat makes more sense. I ordered the gypsy skillet; a long time favorite of mine. It tasted great except the ham was so small it looked more like ground ham than chopped. This disappointed me greatly. Also, for me, the pancakes were dense. Next time I'll order toast. Look at that... All things considered I'm going to return and try something different. I'm hoping the issues I had were isolated incidents. If you're in the area check them out. The prices are reasonable, the space is very nice and the food isn't fabulous, but it is good. read more

First sat down and while ordering some other waitress interrupts and says to our waitress "I don't know know if you saw this or not" and picks up the previous customers tip and throws it across the table. We have eaten here about five-six times since they have opened. The decor is lovely! The food is pretty good . Wait staff is attentive. Would love to see an independent restaurant survive and thrive. So, here are some suggestion: have better coffee, make sure front staff greets people when they walk in, clean the floors. When we mentioned how dirty the floors were and that there was a large amount of water by our table that you could trip on, to the hostess (there was actual trash all over and many workers standing around doing nothing) her reply was "we clean the floor at night"! Having had a number of great experiences at Southern Belle's in Crest Hill, my wife and I were happy to be invited by our daughters and their families to go with them after church today for Sunday brunch. This time we went to the one in Plainfield. We had a bit of a wait and were fairly hungry once seated, looking forward to a good meal. Our server was attentive and very nice and the food came in a reasonable time, but what followed was my first disappointment with SB and it had to do with how management mishandled, in my opinion, a bad food complaint. I had ordered chicken fried chicken covered with sausage gravy, couple of eggs and the ubiquitous and delicious pancakes. When my food arrived I dove right into the chicken. Or at least I tried to. As I attempted to cut what I assumed would be my first tender and tasty morsel, I discovered that an unexpected amount of force was needed to accomplish the task. That was my first clue of "tough" times ahead. The chicken was so overcooked that the only thing that melted in my mouth were my high hopes. Dry as a desert, tough as nails and tasteless. Well, I thought, I'll just mention it to them and they will make good on it. When our server came around and asked if everything tasted good, I had to point out the petrified poultry on my plate. She was sympathetic, and to her credit, she offered to have them make me another. I thanked her for the offer but pointed out that I was really hungry and didn't want to wait to eat the rest of my food (which was getting cold). I asked if they could do something else and she suggested a side of bacon. i accepted thinking it would be a substitute. When she brought it out, I asked if the manager would give some sort of discount, to which she replied, "No, they don't usually do that." I was a little miffed but decided to just take it up at the register. Which I did. It seems I still had to pay for the bad chicken but got a $1.79 off the price of the side of bacon. Okay, I could have raised a stink about it, but I decided, hey, nobody is making me go back right. So, I won't. To that one anyway. read more

Just went to Southern Belles in Plainfield. Had a HORRIBLE experience w/customer service. Eggs were not done how I asked, which normally I wouldn't complain, but seeing as its the 2nd time, I thought I'd talk to the mgr. The manager told the server that she was TOO BUSY to come talk to us!!!! So then we told them we wanted it taken off the bill, manager would only take off 20% of just that meal. NEVER have we been to a restaurant where a Mgr was TOO BUSY to come to the table when asked!!!! We will definitely be calling the owner. (Oh yeah & our server told us that "all the employees were at a wedding the night before, so there will probably be a lot of mistakes today because they were all out til 4am" We will NEVER return and I will tell all our neighbors and friends what bad customer service they have!! We have been there in the past (total of 4x) First 2 times were great! Last 2, bad! Have heard of friends bad experiences lately too. Too bad because i did like this place. We will be calling the owner to let him know of the bad service of the Mgr... hopefully he will do the right thing to make it better... we'll see read more

Thought I would try, something new....bad move. There were 4 of us, myself and 3 teenage girls. Our waitress was very nice and did all we asked, and if anyone has ever dined with 3 teenage girls, you know they are needy! The hot chocolate was awful, we asked the waitress for some milk to add, thinking it would help and she said she would bring it, but the hot chocolate is made with water! Milk didn't help. I had a coupon from a mailing that had 2 different coupons on it. One for buy one get one free LUNCH and one for by one get one free BREAKFAST. It did state equal or lesser value, but since there were 2 different coupons, I thought that since I used the LUNCH coupon, I would get the second LUNCH entree free (which was $3 more then the breakfast meal). WRONG!!!! Okay, so maybe I was being a little too literal, but when they get the manager and she still says no and I tell her that she has lost a customer...she shrugged!!!!! I've given this place one star because I couldn't do the review without allocating it. However, I will NEVER go back to this restaurant. My pancakes were cold and tasted like flour and water, potatoes were obviously freeze dried and TERRIBLY undercooked. The waitress asked me to put my potatoes on a saucer (with the fork I was eating with) so that she could take them back into the kitchen to cook further. My omelet was tasteless...apparently they don't use salt or pepper on the kitchen. It was AWFUL...never got a refresher on my coffee, so I got about a quarter of the way through my cup and it was frozen. Sheesh! The waitress never did bring back the potatoes...but she did being back the bill...full charge for everything and I ate my omelet only. My kids didn't even drink their instant hot chocolate (REALLY??!!!) or eat their chocolate chip pancakes. Smh... Then when I spoke to the manager, she argued that the food was hot because she trayed it. Wow...she proceeded to take off my omelet (which I ate...so SOMEONE wast listening) and my hash browns. We had noticed the portions getting smaller and prices going up but enjoyed the food so we kept going, The last time we went my wife ordered a chicken Caesar wrap that she said tasted like the chicken, dressing or cheese was spoiled. I was hoping to be more excited about this place. A little pricey for my liking. I mean it is breakfast afterall. The atmosphere leaves you feeling like your in a VFW hall. There are mostly table's and not enough booth's. The food portion's are very large. I will give them that. My husband ordered a cobb salad which was good.
