Deli's are an essential cog in the wheel of life, their importance can hardly be overstated. As far as sandwich shops go - Kitchen West Side is bangin' and of course Tower Deli and Mitchell Deli. I was made aware of this deli by an Only In Nashville email which described the sandwiches as "mile high" ala New York and Chicago. This was a mistake, a gross mischaracterization drastically overselling what you're actually gonna get. I've seen Katz's Deli sandwich, this sir is no Katz's sandwich. No where near. Still, not a bad sandwich. I had them make me a pastrami reuben. It had lots of good sauerkraut, a fair amount of pastrami and sauce on well buttered and toasted rye bread. Actually I'm not sure if it was grilled or toasted which makes a big difference. I'll hover and spy with my little eye next time. I also got to try their chicken salad sandwich and it's not quite my style. It's almost watery with the amount of veg mixed in. Creamy chicken salads rank high in my book. This version may be exactly what you prefer. Both sandwiches had good bread, (not Kitchen West Side good but good.) Wondering if there remains another sandwich on the menu which might be deemed delicious. I'll try again...in scooter weather. (They need to add Perrier to their wide assortment of canned/bottled beverages.) read more

We stopped in for lunch and what a great place! It's a very nice addition to the Marathon Village area. We ordered the Cuban and the piasido. Both were amazing. The bread was delicious and the sandwiches were loaded with meat and toppings. I liked them both, but I would say I preferred the Cuban only because I was in the mood for a warm sandwich. We had a sample of the soup of the day, chicken and rice, and it was very tasty. We decided we probably would not have room for soup so we didn't order it. They do have a half soup, half sandwich option available. The service was great and the atmosphere rustic and inviting. The patio area will be great when it is warmer. Located in the old Soda Parlor space, Southern Engine Deli is soon to be in the rotation for sandwich lovers throughout Middle Tennessee. Before I spend time talking about the product, I want to give some attention to the folks running this place. They're nice. They're chatty. They're attentive. They're interested. All of these things matter. When it comes to spending your hard-earned money, you should consider things like the above. A lot of places have a good product. Not every place is going to value your dollar. And your dollar will be needed if you come here. These sandwiches aren't cheap but they are hefty and of high quality. You get what you pay for here. For a sandwich, chips, tax, and (small) tip, I was out $16. I don't regret it but you should know what you're getting into before stepping foot in the door. Since starting this gluten-free thing, sandwiches (for the most part) have been an item I have had to give up. It sounds odd to admit, but I miss the comfort of a good sandwich. Thankfully, at SED, the thrill is back. They have gluten-free bread and can make some of their sandwiches on it. Only some. Some sandwiches require specific bread and all of the sandwiches are REALLY large. It's to their credit at SED that rather than forcing a bread-sandwich combo that won't make sense, they limit the g-f options to sandwiches that pair well with it. I ordered the Paisano and wasn't hungry for d@mn near the rest of the night. Like I said, expensive but worth it. This mountain of a sandwich included lettuce, tomato, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, ham, salami, mortadella, capicollo, provolone and mozzarella. You can get it with a fancy aioli, but mayo is the devil's condiment and I stay away from the stuff. I tacked a bag of g-f chips to the order and made my way home to feast. I contemplated getting a fancy soda in a glass bottle (they have an impressive selection) but I was heading home and had plenty of fancy sodas of my own. If you're eating on site, though, get the fancy soda. The sandwich was as filling, satisfying and delicious as it was enormous. It came halved, which I appreciated. It also came with two pickle spears. Again, appreciated. Sandwich making is an art. It is. If you're going to go all in to/for a sandwich, make sure you're going to a place that takes it seriously. Three of us stopped in after a whiskey tasting at Green Brier. Two had the half sandwich/soup combos. The soup today was chicken corn chowder and it was killer!! Lots of corn and chicken with a kick that knocks your taste buds for a delicious loop. Roast beef sandwich was delicious and generous. The tuna salad sandwich was different and delicious made with sweet pickle relish and white tuna. No skimping with the tuna! Every corner and side of the bread was covered with at least half an inch of tuna salad. Nice big tomato slices and fresh crisp lettuce. Also tried the potato salad. Delicious but again made with sweet pickle relish as well as chopped red bell pepper. Delightful place with friendly and helpful service as well as yummy food!! read more

Great stop while perusing the shops at Marathon! I had the Tampa which is a beefed up version of the classic Cuban and its a super filling and tasty sandwich. This spot fits in very well with the old building and the new shops. Can't wait til they open the patio! read more

We found this wonderful deli when we were visiting Antique Archeology at Marathon Motor Works in Nashville TN. My husband had the Italian hoagie and I opted for the Cuban. Delicious!!!!!! The coleslaw has homemade and delicious. They were able to make my Cuban on GF bread bread. Yummy!! read more

On vacation in nashville with my family, decided to stop at this deli in a cute area. The lady with bangs helping us at the counter was very rude and unhelpful. My mom asked one question about the bread selection, she answered rudely and pointed at the board looking at my mom as if she was stupid for asking the question. Then i ordered my food and she said "you can't do that" to my order. We both stood in awkward silence considering i did not know what she was referring to. She then tried to change my order instead of trying to help me. The food was pleasant but i will not return. That lady needs to work on her customer service before speaking aloud. read more

Surprisingly good! The turkey sandwich had more meat than two sandwiches would have in most delis! Every ingredient was fresh and tasty. You won't regret this stop for lunch. I really enjoyed my visit to Southern Engine. The decor is wonderful. The old wood counter tops and tables are super clean, but have a unique rustic feel that fits super nicely with the Marathon Motorworks vibe. The sandwich was full of fantastic and fresh ingredients. Tried the Southern Engine Deli today for the first time, and was pleased by some things and disappointed in others. I ordered the Miami Cuban sandwich, and sides of potato salad and macaroni salad so I could decide which I prefer, for future orders. I lived in south Florida for 12 years and got spoiled to Cuban sandwiches being prepared by real Cubans. Today's sandwich was very close to those, only the second place I've found in Nashville that does something close to authentic -- to be fair, most south Floridians don't have a clue as to what makes real barbecue so it's a trade-off. Cheers for apparently using real Cuban bread, and MAJOR bonus points for pressing the whole sandwich, something most places outside south Florida either don't know to do or just don't bother with. The meats were plentiful and the sandwich tasted very good. One big disappointment, though, was the size - small. Cuban sandwiches are usually pretty large, close to 10-12", and this one was only about 5-6" long, about the length of a plastic fork. It was cut in half and each half was about the size of a slider. From the reviews I'd read that raved about the large sandwiches, I really was expecting it to be bigger, especially with its $10 price tag. The macaroni salad was "eh". It had a thick mayonnaise-based dressing holding it together and it was pretty salty. I only ate a couple of bites before abandoning it. A little less dressing and a little less salt might be the solution. The potato salad was yellow (mustard based), and it was good. Nothing great, but good. It tasted a little like what you can buy at grocery store deli counters. Both sides were very INexpesive for the serving sizes, the opposite of the Cuban sandwich situation. My meal came via a delivery service. Despite having two sides, there was no fork in the bag (I keep a couple on hand for just such an occasion). I don't know whether that was the restaurant's or the delivery guy's responsibility so I'm giving it a pass. I do plan to try the Southern Engine at least one more time. read more
