They have a good variety of beer types on tap plus a good number of local drinks which was my main aim coming here. They were out of a couple of beers listed which was slightly disappointing but everything I decided on in my flight of 6 was decent to delicious. I think the flight of 6 ran us $13. If you are looking to get away from the Honky Tonk's and droves of screaming parties cruising by on buses, then head to the Gulch and pop into this place! We ended up here through a recommendation to hit the Gulch, and we wanted a chill place that didn't come with a 45 minute wait that served small bites and good beer...and luckily we found just that in Hops and Crafts! Coming from Atlanta, taprooms are a thing of obsession for us, so we were really excited to see this place! It is located on 12th street, sitting at the end of a small "shopping center" that features a beverage store and urban real estate office. Its quite a small establishment, but is laid out quite well. You enter through the patio, which features 3 - 4 tables and enters directly into the taproom via a garage door or normal entry door for when the weather isn't super great. The taproom features a bar that seats 6, and a combination of 2, 4 and 6 top tables. Additionally, there are a few TV's, and the bartenders are pretty chill with changing the channel for you. The beers are detailed on a rotating digital screen and while I cant recall the exact number, there were quite a few taps, easily pushing 15 - 20 different beers from all over the country. All the beers are pretty evenly priced at $8 per pint. Daily specials are also something to be noted, as at least 6 days of the week feature a good deal from "2 pints and a pretzel for $16" to "$ off Tennessee Beers". Saturday is the only day that does not feature a daily deal, which makes sense. I ended up with an Icelandic White beer, while my partner got a Spiked Rootbeer. We both enjoyed! In addition to beer, they offer a small menu of appetizer style foods from pizza to pretzels to a meat plate. As mentioned above, they even include the food as a daily special with one day featuring discounted apps! We ended up pairing our beers with a large soft pretzel with cheese sauce and grain mustard. It was nothing special, but definitely hit the spot. Since we have established that the beer is good, the layout and ambiance are nice and the food is decent, I wanted to touch base on the service. Due to the size of the place, it seems that they always have one bartender on shift. They serve as the bartender, server and cook. So, be patient with whomever is behind the bar! The way it works is everyone places their order(s) at the bar, and then once ready the bartender will bring to you at your table. During our visit, the bartender was a tall, bald gent, I wish I would have caught his name because he was wonderful! He was excited to help, patient with your questions and was genuinely pumped to talk about the beers! He constantly walked through the taproom checking on the patrons to ensure they were good, always asking "can I get you another pint?" and when someone said yes, he was quick to talk through the beers and offer his recommendations. Overall, I really enjoyed this spot and will certainly be back when in the Music City! In addition, it definitely made my recommendation list as well! read more

Like I've already written in Yelp reviews for a couple other taprooms back home in CA... In a more perfect World, every town has a good taproom. Hops & Crafts is certainly moving Nashville towards this Utopian vision. I was in town for Yelp Spring Break 2014 & arrived a couple days early to check out the scene on my own. After settling into my hotel room, my 1st priority was finding good beer nearby. The Beer Gods smiled graciously upon me as Hops & Crafts was but a short walk from my hotel. My 1st night in Nashville, I managed to get here right before closing time. Even though they were about to close, the beertender had no problem serving me a sampler flight & a pint after. I ended up hanging out while he prepped to shut the place down for the night. Drinking my beers & having a great conversation about Nashville, hot chicken &, of course, beers. While I was in town, I came back a few more times. All of the staff I met here were super cool & very friendly. My visits to Hops & Crafts were also a voyage of discovery. Being from CA, the vast majority of beers I've had fresh are West Coast. Hops & Crafts' taps were mostly local TN & Midwest beers. It was fun & fascinating to try out beers from brewers who have a different approach from what I'm used to. So if we only stayed here for 1 drink I think the rating may have been a 2. I don't know if the bartender just woke up? However soon (possibly the owner or another bartender) showed up with so much flair and more people came in, and they started interacting with everyone and then soon we found quirky little things around this smaller space that made us laugh and the bartenders started talking shop about beer and other drinks and it became such a different place. I'm a couple of years too late in coming to/reviewing this spot. Although it was my first time at H&C, I am past the point of my life where I drink beer. So... why go to a beer bar? Because it's a fairly popular drinking hole in the city and I'd never been. Plus, the menu boasts cider, hard root beer and kombucha. So, I thought, all would be well even if I wasn't having a cold wheat beer on a mid-spring evening. I thought. Don't get me wrong: the place was/is fine but it didn't knock my socks off. To start, the online menu and the menu at the location don't match up. There's no boozy kombucha. There's no Gnarley Grove cider. My buddy didn't find the lagers he came to drink. This wasn't starting well. It's a bummer to head to a place expecting one thing and not delivering on much of any of it. Left without my a or b selection, I went with the hard root beer. In other reviews I'd read complaints about a dirty line. I can't speak to how H&C keep their taproom but I have to admit that I hadn't had a hard root beer that had such an unusual mouthfeel and aftertaste... and I've had that hard root beer before. The taproom is fairly small and we're finally heading into patio weather so my friend and I took our drinks outside. The table hadn't been cleaned in a long time. It was visibly grimy, gritty to the touch and reeked of the discarded cigarette butts that adorned the table top. Yeah, it was as appealing as it sounds. I powered through and concentrated on the conversation rather than everything else but I was embarrassed to have suggested this place. As it was, we left our drinks unfinished and went to another establishment. H&C could have been a *lot* better. My experience was nothing I'd rush to recreate. As far as the service goes... it was fine. Our bartender wasn't rude but she didn't jump at the chance to be our new best friend... which is fine. We used to frequent this place a couple times per week but don't think we'll be visiting much any more, and definitely not when the owner is working. He is very unprofessional and doesn't know how to treat his customers. The two women who usually work there are great but we always have issues when the owner is around. To start, on our most recent trip we grabbed a seat on the patio and my girlfriend brought her ID and my ID inside to get us both a beer. We understand in this city even if you are a regular, IDs are a requirement. But for the owner here, having an ID was not enough... We moved to Nashville a few months ago and still have out of state IDs, which I guess could be a red flag at a college bar but this is the Gulch and I'm bald and nearing 30. He "confiscated" my ID and told my girlfriend we could only have it back if I came in and got it to prove it was actually me. Wut? Secondly, we wanted to watch football and can't see TVs from the patio. We had our dog with us but decided to go inside anyways. He always lets dogs in there, we see them in there all the time. We actually just walked by tonight and saw someone inside with a dog hanging out while chatting with this owner... Anyways, he told us we couldn't have our dog in there that day since it is technically a restaurant. But there was another dog in there right before we went in (and was in there for about 20 min because we were waiting for them to leave before going in with our dog). My suspicion is because I asked him to change one of the TV channels to a different game, which he didn't seem interested in doing, he told us we couldn't have our dog in there. Owners who treat customers like we were treated fail more often than not. Good luck to them. read more

This taproom is small but a chill hangout. They have some great craft beer. Tuesdays are "Tennessee Tuesdays" in which all Tennessee beer is 1/2 off. Happy Hour is 3-6 so there's just enough time to grab a drink right after work. Location: Located by Turnip Truck, its right on 12th Ave on the corner. I mention the location because its in a good spot if you want to go get dinner afterwards or hit another bar there is lots in this area. Ambiance: They have some games and they also seem to be pet friendly. There's a small patio and a couple had their St. Bernard with them. It is definitely a comfortable spot. I love this place! My husband and I are visiting Nashville for spring break and struggled to find dog friendly places with great beer (in 30 degree weather). We stopped here just to check it out, and unfortunately the outside warmers were out of propane. They have a good selection of beers and classify them into categories (blonde, IPA, Ciders, etc). They allowed you to try a few before you decided on your pint. We got their sampler and the girl that works there named, Kayla, was an enormous help for finding each beer that suited both of our different tastes. I'm down with the H&C taproom. They have an electronic beer menu which really helps when trying to read the menu. They also have huge garage doors to let in the cool Nashville air, AND they are pet friendly. The beer menu is filled with the usual suspects with the typical TN beer crew. I tried to branch out and ordered a Green Flash Saison Diego. It was delightful and tangy. The food is from Coffee/Lunch and the menu consists of three items: Chicken salad sandwich, pimento cheese sandwich, and hummus and veggies. I'm hoping they expand the food just by a smidge, or they let in outside food. Grabbing a to go box from the Turnip Truck sounds like a perfect Wednesday evening.
