I used to love this café -- we had many meetings here before. The food was always delicious, and the atmosphere was very pleasant. But something has changed. I hadn't visited for more than six months, and we recently came back for a business meeting. We ordered a salmon toast and coffee, and when the food arrived, I was shocked. The ingredients looked like they were just thrown together, and the presentation was very unappealing. I asked them to remake the toast, but the second one was even worse. The bread was burnt, and there was only a very small piece of salmon, not to mention almost no filling. I will not be coming back and cannot recommend this place to anyone. Please improve -- your location is great, and I would have loved to keep coming here, but now I remember our meal with disappointment. The coffee also smelled bad, the tables were sticky, and overall the experience felt unpleasant.

We visited the Southern Grounds location in St. Augustine the day before coming here, and that location truly stood out for its atmosphere and service. Unfortunately, the Neptune Beach location didn't quite have the same charm, and our drinks weren't as good compared to what we had the day prior. That said, I still enjoy Southern Grounds overall and appreciate it far more than the typical corporate coffee chains. Even when one location doesn't quite hit the mark, I still prefer supporting a brand that offers a more thoughtful, local coffee experience.

An amazing location and vibe. The outdoor seating is so relaxing and makes you feel like youre on vacation. The staff are very helpful and nice. I got a salmon toast, it was okay. I wish they added more salmon. Not bad but also not amazing. Their matcha was good too, I loved it with the lavender. Overall I had a great time hanging out here, its a good choice if youre in the area looking for a cafe to hang out in.

Wandered over to this place which is also on the JAX coffee donut trail. It's got outdoor seating and indoor seating. You order at the counter and if you're dining in you get a table number. The staff is super friendly and sweet. It's got a retro but industrial farmhouse look inside which is super cute - and the patio is open and inviting. We ordered two coffee- a cold brew with lavender for me and toasty pumpkin latte for him. He got a chocolate chip caramel cookie and I got a nutter butter cookie. We both thoroughly enjoyed our cookies, demolishing them before our drinks came. He demolished his drink before I got to my drink. Super well portioned and tasty. We would absolutely eat the entire bakery case if we could, lol. Side bar: they make their flavored syrups in house and it is on point.

My friend said this was the best coffee on the beach and yes, it's very good. I didn't try the others. Nice vibe here at this very busy coffee shop with a queue to order and a few minutes later, they bring your baked goods and coffee to the table. I was early for our meetup so I did some Yelping while waiting for him to arrive. Lots of pretty people coming and going this time of year. Parking on the weekend was free but it's usually paid with one of the mobile apps. My cortado was perfect. Served in the proper short glass, it was delicious and had the right amount of caffeine to keep me going. Half espresso and half steamed (not foamed) milk, it's like drinking a proper coffee and not a "coffee flavored milk" latte. I recommend you try a cortado! Amazing food and drinks! Open on Thanksgiving for Pete's bar which was very much appreciated! The campfire mocha was phenomenal as well as the hot latte

First time going with friends and this is definitely on my list as a cozy spot to study or chit chat! Between my friends and I we ordered the delicious food you below and everything was so tasty . Service was great, the barista answered all the questions that I had and helped with making suggestions.

Friendly staff and quick service. All good things about a coffee shop next to the beach. They turn out a solid breakfast all in a relax atmosphere. The California Benedict that I got had nice chunks of avocado with a light hollandaise sauce. Eggs were poached well, with a nice runny center and not over cooked. A good relaxing start to the day :)

Great service with a seriously tasty menu. And if you're looking for a great coffee this is your place. Chill vibe outside and the only thing I'd suggest is signs for the toilets on the doors of the courtyard!

I love the Neptune beach southern grounds location. Although it gets busy on weekends, I can always find space to work on my projects. The food is absolutely delicious and there are many dietary options. I love Sogro coffee and sometimes even enjoy drinking it black to enjoy the bold flavor.

Southern Grounds is such a cozy spot! The grilled goat cheese sandwich was chef's kiss--seriously delicious. It comes with a side, and I went with the pasta salad, which was pretty decent. Also tried a local kombucha from Gnarbucha, and it was super refreshing! The outdoor seating is perfect for hanging out, reading, or getting some work done. And that pastry case is calling my name--I'll definitely be back to try some of those treats. Overall, a solid place to relax with good food and great vibes!

Anytime we stay in Atlantic Beach, we have to make a pit stop at Southern Grounds. This time, we ordered ahead for a few drinks: iced latte with mocha and white chocolate and an iced latte with vanilla and caramel sauce. They were right on time for pick-up. It was pretty busy so glad we called ahead. Love the courtyard area when we eat on site vs picking up to go. It's a great breakfast spot in the beautiful Atlantic beach town center area!

Cute coffee spot. Great location by the beach in a nice little plaza by shops. It was pretty busy. I got a hot coco which was pretty good. Great spot to meet up with a friend or do some work.

Ask the Community - Southern Grounds

Do they allow dogs on the outdoor patio?

The patio seems to be part of the shopping complex and I saw many dogs both days that we were there.

Is it sit down or order at counter?

Hi Allie! You order at the counter, but they usually bring your order to your table

I used to absolutely love this place. It was our go-to for seafood, celebrations, family dinners,…read moreand special occasions for years. We recommended it constantly and genuinely enjoyed supporting them. Unfortunately, after our last few experiences, that loyalty is completely gone. The problems really started during a dinner visit with my spouse. We had a reservation for two and specifically requested a booth because my spouse has herniated discs and booths are much easier on her back. The hostess with glasses told us there were "no booths available for parties of two," so we were seated at a tiny two-top directly in front of an empty booth. Minutes later, another couple - who apparently didn't even have the correct downstairs reservation because Wheel House was closed for a private event - was seated in that exact booth instead. When I politely questioned it, I was told they were "accommodating them." Interesting, because apparently accommodating a medical issue for customers with a reservation didn't matter. Still, we decided to give the restaurant another chance for Mother's Day. To their credit, we were seated at a booth this time after I both noted it in the reservation and called ahead to confirm it. Our waiter was someone we immediately recognized from a previous visit, and my parents mentioned he had waited on us before at that same table. Somehow, from that comment alone, he became convinced we were related to Chef Tim Tillus. From there, things got bizarre. He kept talking about "Timmy," mentioning reunions and saying he used to live with him. The restaurant was extremely loud, and my father had forgotten his hearing aids that day, so honestly we could barely understand what he was talking about. We just smiled politely and focused on asking about the menu because we truly had no clue where the conversation was going. Eventually, he came back and realized we were NOT Chef Tim Tillus' family. He then explained that the kitchen staff had apparently been laughing because the chef saw us and said, "That's not my family." So somehow this became a whole ordeal in the kitchen over a completely innocent misunderstanding. We laughed awkwardly because what else do you do at that point? But honestly, the whole interaction felt strange and unprofessional. Unfortunately, the food was even worse than the awkward service. My spouse ordered the all-day seafood soup, and somehow there was basically ZERO seafood in it. That alone was shocking because their soups used to be incredible. My father ordered the broiled platter, and the portion size was honestly embarrassing for a $29 dish. His parsley potatoes consisted of literally five tiny cubes - my mother counted them because we were in disbelief. We have eaten here for years and NEVER saw portions this small. I ordered the fish special, and it was nothing like described. It was supposed to have pecans and blackening seasoning. There were no pecans, no blackening seasoning, and the fish itself was dry, bland, overcooked, and flavorless. For $32, I was served what looked like a tiny sad pile of fish in the middle of a giant empty plate. The pork chop looked beautiful but tasted absolutely awful. At this point I honestly don't know if the kitchen quality has completely collapsed or if nobody is checking food before it leaves the line anymore. Either way, it was terrible. My mother ordered scallops on the half shell as her meal - something she has enjoyed there many times before. This time, the scallops were tiny and somehow greasy. It was shocking these dishes were even leaving the kitchen. What makes this so disappointing is that we truly loved this restaurant. We weren't casual customers. We supported this place for years because we believed the food and experience were worth it. This wasn't just a mediocre meal or an "off night." This was a genuinely terrible dining experience from start to finish, made worse by the fact that it happened on Mother's Day. The service felt awkward and disorganized, the portions were insulting, the food quality was awful, and there seemed to be zero quality control happening anywhere. At this point, our money will be supporting other establishments instead. It's honestly sad because this place USED to be special. I sincerely hope management fixes the kitchen, consistency, and overall professionalism before even more longtime customers walk away.
