This location has become so hit or miss with food. The coffee is always great, and the atmosphere is the best at the beaches with the huge outdoor seating area. But, the food has become so inconsistent. The eggs benedict is a great dish, but twice it's been served to me with a hollondaise sauce that was either broken, spoiled, or made with the wrong recipe. It's lumpy and tastes like pure acid. I've also had it made perfectly on other occasions, but they need to start ensuring that if the food isn't right, it doesn't go out the door. The toast was also crumbly like a cracker, and didn't seem freshly toasted. The grits bowl is great; it's only served before noon and it's the perfect breakfast option. Southern Grounds has all the potential to be a 5 star coffee shop experience, but they just need to ensure they are prioritizing the quality of their food. read more

This place was amazing. It was by no means a simple coffee shop. They had a lot of menu items to choose from, including tacos, sandwiches, breakfast items and so much more. The drink selection was also quite varied. I was there for coffee though, and it was very yummy. The taste was fresh and a perfect temperature. As always, my mocha sauce was stirred just right. They even had their cream and sugar bar open so you could change how much you added to suit your taste. One of the other things I loved was their friendliness to dogs. We were able to sit on the patio and they had clean dog bowls with water for her while we sat and enjoyed the moment together. This is definitely a nice spot to come and hang out. Left Saint Augustine this morning and needed a good cuppa coffee to us on the drive. Popped into Jacksonville to Southern grounds and it was a for sure stellar find. Whether you want to go in and grab a quick bite to eat and a coffee or grab lunch and a good adult bevy - they have it! Nice staff and very clean place. Art for sale along with company merchandise. SoGro is a staple for me. I've had almost everything on their menu - and haven't had a bad meal. They literally have anything I'm in the mood for - from their hand cut fries to my fave cobb salad in town. For breakfast, you really can't go wrong with creamy grits bowl w an over medium egg, cheese, bacon and green onions. Filling and delicious. As with every place in the beaches town center, parking is dicey and unreliable so I recommend alternate transportation if possible. You order at the counter, get a number, and they bring your food out to you. They have a great breakfast selection with bagels, pastries, breakfast sandwiches, etc. But they also have amazing choices for lunch and dinner. Great outdoor area and the inside is bigger than it seems. I had the grilled chicken sandwich and it was simply great. Everything the description promised and nothing more. Came with chips, pretty sure they're just Lays potato chips, but that's perfectly fine with me. My fiancé got the quesadilla which he loved. Didn't come with anything. Personally, I would ask for it without jalapeño cuz jalapeño ain't it for me. We've previously had the Cobb salad and cape rede sandwich and both were superb. read more

I have gone to Southern Grounds in the past and it has not always been my favorite food spot. I usually just get coffee and study, but this toast was awesome! I love the avocado toast as well but it's a bit pricey for what you get. 10/10 would recommend Southern Grounds and you have to get this toast if you like burrata. Oh my goodness, one of the best lattes I've ever had! I ordered an iced latte with oat milk and toffee nut flavoring. The espresso itself had the most rich, delicious flavor which I could still taste despite the oatmilk and syrup. It was creamy, and just the right amount of sweet! The atmosphere was inviting and seemed to be a great place to enjoy some coffee, lunch or pastries and get some work it studying done. I am always in search of a great cup of coffee (cup o'Joe, cafe, you get the point). I stopped into Southern Grounds at the beach and was pleasantly surprised (in a good way). It had an industrial, cool coffee house feel. Dark wood and industrial fixtures. Their menu has variety and this isn't your typical coffee house with just pastries and drip coffee. I opted for a cafe con leche (bringing me back to my days in Spain) and an egg and cheese on a bagel. Inside they have ample seating, but outside they have a great courtyard, so you're able to people watch, remotely work, and enjoy the sunshine and coastal breeze. My cafe con leche and bagel came out in less than 10 minutes. I'm a New Yorker, so when it comes to bagels I don't expect a boiled doughy bagel in Florida. The bagel was light and airy with a hole in the middle. Was it reminiscent of a bagel: kind of. It tasted like a hard roll, but looked like a bagel. Don't get me wrong it was good, but it was a roll as a bagel in disguise. The egg was perfectly cooked: light, fluffy, and warm. And paired nicely with the American cheese, ooey gooey and delicious. The cafe con leche was rich, creamy, and robust. It was a great start to my morning. The only downfall of my visit was I asked the server for ketchup (I know there are two types of people, people that put ketchup on their eggs and those that don't), but never received it. Maybe I need to start BYOK bringing my own ketchup with me to restaurants. I digress. I'll be back. There's nothing like good ole' southern hospitality. Even though we only ordered coffee, the service and warmth of the atmosphere was nothing short of the best and quite welcoming. I wanted to step out the box a little bit and order something other than the usual drip. I ordered the French Pressed with almond milk and caramel syrup and boy was it delicious. It totally slipped my mind on how french pressed coffee is brewed. So when they brought the entire kettle of coffee to me, I couldn't believe the entire kettle was all mine for less than $4. I had to request more almond milk to finish my second cup and still had enough coffee leftover for a third cup. For a coffee lover such as myself, I thought I hit the jackpot. LOL! Next time I am in Neptune waiting for the sun to rise or slightly thereafter, I will be heading over to Southern Grounds for another round or three of their French Press. read more

Theoretically, this place is awesome. Great food menu, great coffee roasting partner, fresh-made baked goods and a nice outdoor seating area. But during my three visits, I was surprised at how aloof and ultimately unhelpful the staff who took my order and made my coffee were. On this last visit I ordered a latte with two standard double shots. I needed a jolt. Instead, I got a very milky drink, with little coffee flavor. I noticed this when I was already a block away but because it cost seven dollars, I decided to go back and ask for an extra shot. The barista and her coworker quickly became defensive, insisting it already had the extra doubkeshot. "We could give you a single" the mgr said. (i've ordered enough coffee to know that this means they'd throw the other half of the shot away rather than put it in my drink). The thing is, I order this drink all the time and know exactly what a strong, espresso coffee drink tastes like with half-and-half. But they were having nothing of it. So I said I would pay for more espresso and they obliged and charged me an extra $3.55. I'm used to paying quite a bit more for my 12 ounce latte with double espresso but $11 is real, real steep. During the three days I was there I don't think I saw a single smile behind the counter. I felt like my slightly special order was a nuisance to them. I really wanted to like you Southern Grounds. I have been here before but cannot remember the last time. I was expecting an easy to find coffee menu for an afternoon pick-me-up. More prominent were the brewed beerskies, which would more than likely put-me-down. Eventually I found a list and ordered/paid/tipped frugally. While waiting I engaged in a discussion with the head person working as to the difference between a FLAT WHITE and the CORTADO, which I ordered. What I conclude is that different coffee joints do different things making it heir drinks. It is OK with me....as a coffee lover & mostly dairy-tolerant individual. I have vacillated between rating 3 or 5 but settled on 5. The drink was acceptable and tasty, even though not what I expected. I am sitting outside under an umbrella and imagine that I can hear the ocean a block or two away. More than likely I am hearing AC units. I love trying new spots and I'm so glad my friends and I tried Southern Grounds on Christmas Eve for lunch. When I walked through the door I was overwhelmed with the smell of brewing coffee. I'm not a coffee drinker, but I like the smell LOL. We stood in line, placed our orders and then found a spot to sit outside. Seating was first come first serve. We waited about 10 minutes for our food to be served at our table. The restaurant was pretty busy, so that was not a bad wait. I had the Not Yo' Mama's Quesadilla. If you are looking for a light lunch this is a great dish! The quesadilla included rotisserie chicken, cheddar, avocado vinaigrette, chipotle ranch, red onions, corn, black beans, cilantro and sliced jalapenos as a topper. All of these ingredients combined were amazing! So many flavors. Bonus, all the ingredients were fresh. This was a step up from the everyday quesadilla. They also offered wine and beer. And of course as you would expect with a coffee house, there were lots of breakfast options as well. I came here on New Years Day with my husband and brother-in-law. My brother-in-law said this was a coffee shop he'd been wanting to try. Upon walking in, we realized this place is packed! The staff handled the amount of people well! They were nice and efficient. I also noticed them greeting some of their regulars. I love seeing businesses care about everyone, but that personal touch between regulars and employee's is always a plus! The atmosphere was very comfortable in the sense that I wouldn't mind sitting and doing homework here. It isn't extremely quiet but wasn't extremely loud where I would find it hard to focus. The food menu offers plenty of options! I ordered the Eggs Benedict, Salted Caramel Cookie and a Peppermint Latte without coffee, similar to a steamer from Starbucks. The food was great! It's been a minute since I have dined at Southern Grounds and the last time I did it was in San Marco. John took me here for a light breakfast today. I ordered a bacon, egg and cheese croissant and a hot chamomile tea with honey and John ordered a blueberry muffin. My breakfast sandwich was delicious- buttery and light croissant, fried egg, cheese- I only wish the bacon was crispy (I'll ask for that next time). The tea was delightful and I was advised to let it steep an additional minute when it was delivered to the table. John liked (but did not love) his muffin. He has a benchmark for muffins and this one did not meet the bar- lol. I laugh because I didn't know blueberry muffins had become one of his morning habits on the way to work. I had to agree with him, I've had better. Next time we will probably do a bigger breakfast. I did love the cute shopping square it is located in with all the outdoor tables!
