Excellent service. Sat at the patio which has many flowers arranged on the walls, is right next to a lovely little pond, and had nice shading from a large tree nearby. Came in to just get an smoked old fashioned. They were out of wood to smoke the old fashioned and still got charged $17 which is full price, for it. There was below average service, and I was ignored by most staff. I asked to meet the manager the bartenders wouldn't let me meet them because "she was too busy." We decided to try this spot on a Saturday night. They don't take reservations so we were nervous we wouldn't get in. Though it was pretty busy, the wait wasn't long. Maybe 15 minutes. There were lots of good options on the menu. We got fried pickles for the table. Yum!! I ordered the shrimp and grits. It had a perfect balance of flavors. I've had shrimp and grits some places that's focus is the cheese in the grits. This dish had other flavors. How do you know we wanted to be seated in the bar?? Midwest take on soul food dishes were meh. Grits need chicken broth for flavor and texture as well as seasoning; cook longer and add more cheese. I would say the fried green tomatoes were pretty good and I'd order those again. Showstopper was the pastrami sandwich it was better than good! The lunch special where you can pick 1/2 of two entrees is a great deal and a way to try more than one dish! Wouldn't go out of my way to come here. read more

This is a tough one... on the upside; Food is solid. Craft cocktails are also really well done. Atmosphere is also very nice. Here's the flip side. Service was very slow and staff just felt disconnected with customers. Multiple people seemed to try to get both bartender's attention and it almost felt like being intentionally ignored. This was a slow Tuesday night so it wasn't because of being overwhelmed with orders. Food portions seemed smaller from what I remember about a year ago. Too sum it up. Very nice restaurant, high and low tables along with booth like areas. Dim lights (which I love), modern lighting fixtures, dark wood tables and amp space so you don't feel clustered. They have a wonderful staff, very friendly servers and attentive too. Menu is a range from briskets, sandwiches and platters along with brunch and sides. Our table of 8 shared a communal table and we went in and tried the wings, brisket, chicken sandwiches, waffles and sides. All tasty, very well priced too. Cocktails and Bevs were sized well too almost everything is 16oz or in high ball glasswares. Music was relaxed and subtle not overpowering, great for a get together, date or simply lunch/dinner. Definitely want to go again as I was informed ñ by a co worker that they have daily lunch specials under 15$ so that's a plus for someone like me who's on a budget during inflight training but also seis a close venue for food and hospitality as we are away from home. Myself and some girlfriends went here for a dinner together. We had a party of 4. They had a parking lot and a shared lot with a hotel. It was not completely clear that it was shared, but I am going off assumption. The lot that was just for the restaurant was quite full and people were waiting for a spot. Inside though the place was not full so we were able to be sat right away. For the table we ordered the biscuit basket as well as the the pork belly burnt ends. The burnt ends were good not memorable. The biscuits were not my favorite biscuit since they kind of tasted like they were from a can. For dinner I ordered the half bird. For my sides I ordered the mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. We were able to get one sauce and I got the Carolina sauce. I really liked the Carolina sauce. The chicken was tasty. The mac and cheese is a pimento mac and cheese and I was not a fan. The mashed potatoes and gravy were tasty. To go I ordered the corn bread to bring home for the BF and it was really good even traveled, but I am sure it is the best right at the restaurant. Overall I don't see myself making the trek to eagan to go here again and even if i was in the area, I would likely select a different place. It was kind of forgettable. read more

I am a true Minnesotan and not very versed in my southern food so I was very excited to try some things. I started with the chicken and dumpling soup. Very thick, chunky tomatoes, topped with Cajun seasoning and a puff pastry. Nothing like I've ever tried before but I quite enjoyed it. I then got the shrimp po boy for my main. I've had a few po boys but straight from Louisiana. I was expecting the shrimp to be fried, which would have elevated this sandwich more. It was delicious but was lacking the texture the fried shrimp would have given. Fries were fine. I will say some of the other meals that the others at my table got were quite small given the price. I've been waiting to come here since my wife told me about over a month ago. Located in Eagan close to 35E and Highway 77, this is a must visit if your a foodie! It's beautiful and spacious inside and the service is beyond exceptional! Feels like good ole southern hospitality for real. My wife and I couldn't decide on the cheese curds or the burnt ends for an appetizer, they sounded so good on paper my wife said "let's just both." Y'all, I'm not even gonna lie, these might be the best cheese curds I've ever had in my life. And I'm born in Wisconsin, I've been to state fair numerous times. Cheese curds is one of my all time fav's, but there is something special about these. The crunch, the flavor, the melted goodness. One bite: this is what God meant when he created it and saw that it was good! Oh. My. Goodness. And whatever the dipping sauce that came with the cheese curds is chef creation level genius. The collard greens taste like ya grandma or auntie stayed up all night slaving over the stove for thanksgiving dinner. Call it lights out, cus you will be so satisfied you will want to go to sleep after these. Goodnight! The fried chicken drum and thigh were so good, the chicken was moist and flavorful, the seasoning wasn't overpowering but it was heavenly. I went full country boy and got the white cheddar grits, but I was so full I couldn't finish em. But I can tell you, the seasoning is perfect. The burnt ends were on point, the fries were on point. I do not recommend this place. Pros: nice inside. Cons: small and very dry biscuits, no grits on brunch menu, potatoes were cold, butter was frozen. The fried green tomatoes weren't extremely traditional as they were coated in sauce and had a pickled mix on top which kind of took away from the actual tomatoes themselves, but the flavors were bomb. In my usual fashion, I forgot a photo of our main courses, but I got the Mac n cheese with chicken tenders on top and it was alright, but certainly would go for something different next time. The nachos had very dense and crispy chips, but had great flavors as well. The rum cake sounded fabulous, but honestly was a little lacking in the flavor department and a tish dry. I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars here. Our group of 6 sat outside. The patio is decent; it's quieter than inside the restaurant, which our group wanted. But it's also near a highway, so it's not as tranquil as desired. - The ribs were tasty with a nice smoked flavor and a big portion. My buddy got the full rack and he only made it through a half rack. - Speaking of portions, in general this place offers big, American-sized portions...which I like. - Biscuits were exceptional. The honey butter was delish, and they gave you plenty of it to spread onto the biscuits. And the blackberry jam with it was a nice tough. However, $6 for two biscuits felt a bit pricey for my blood. - The Southern Social burger was a disappointment; not a lot of flavor. My wife asked, "Is this actually the right burger?" (because there was not a noticeable flavor to it). - I like the availability of numerous sources. Their Carolina Gold sauce was solid. - We split some chicken tenders that were fresh and good meat. The fried flavor was fine but didn't jump out at me. Not any better than you would eat at a place like Raising Cane's. I would prefer Chick-fil-A tenders over these tenders. - I asked the rest of our group what they thought of the place: the responses ranged from "OK" to "pretty good". - Fries were excellent. - Sweet potato fries were so-so. - Hostesses up front were friendly, professional, and accommodating. - Our server was friendly and mostly did a good job. read more

A really good example of where Yelp would benefit from half stars. Also, Southern Social is a good example of the need to evaluate a new place the 1st month, in 6 months, and a year later. This review covers the 1st 30 days. We were here on opening day, and 6 times after. We came for brunch once and our last visit was Father's Day. Each visit has been progressively worse. Let me start with what's good. 1. The Space: really well done. It's open and spacious. There's a variety of seating options. It's really well appointed. 2. The Service: Always friendly and helpful. If anything, they're undermined by poor planning (management?) and the kinks of the kitchen needing to find its groove. 3. Drinks: Great beer and cocktail list. And, an impressive assortment of whiskeys. What's kind of working? The Food: The fried chicken is very good. Not quite as good as Revival, but better than most in the area. Though the Yankee Tavern's is better. The grits are perfect. Can't say enough good things about the nachos, biscuits, and any of the fried chicken sandwich. And that's where it stops for me. The mac and cheese is dry and is every single time. Note the photo. The ribs are caked in rub. It's too much; like poorly applied foundation. You offer, per the menu, great field chicken. So why do the chicken and waffles come with chicken tenders? On what earth? On opening day and the first week they had a totally different type of fries. They were awesome. And they were ditched for basic seasoned fries. The fried green tomatoes were great week 1. They've been soggy and undercooked since. So what's been bad? The planning / management: As example, we were in the week before Father's Day. They told us to come back and have the "Dino rib." They also marketed it on their instagram. Note the photo. We showed up at 4. We sat down. I tried to order the Dino rib. Get this, they didn't run out; they simply NEVER had them. The server was apologetic. And then tried to sell us on the deal they were running; which to his own admission, was not a suitable alternative. What a bait and switch that I'm guessing comes from poor planning. To boot they had NO biscuits! How does a southern place have no biscuits?? Another example would be the slushy cocktails. Haven't had them for 2 weeks / 50% of the time they've been open. Why? Machine doesn't work, per the server. We'll be back in 6 months to see if things have changed. Right now, though Southern Social arrived with high hopes, I can't recommend it. read more

Visiting here for my cousin's wedding and we ate here twice today. The afternoon lunch was great to the point where we decided that we would invite all of our cousins and aunties back for dinner in a party of 13-15 people. We were abruptly told by the lunch staff that it didn't matter the size of our group, they don't take reservations on Friday or Saturdays. They somewhat rudely told us we would have to wait until they could put together tables for that many people. We promises them we would definitely be back and we would have at least 10 people at 8pm. Fast forward to 8pm. We ended up having 15 people with no reservations. Fortunately, the night manager was Travis. He was very accommodating and our group swelled from 15 to 20 people. Travis went out of his way to make sure we could all sit together. He was very kind, not like the day crew. We had in the afternoon a great waiter named Justus who was fabulous. In the evening we had an awesome waiter named Monique. Everyone was very satisfied with the food and evening service. I would like to make a suggestion that Southern Social change their policy somewhat to accommodate parties for 12 or more to have reservations. Even if you have to take a credit card to hold it. It's better that way than to make a large group like that stand and wait. We would return to this restaurant because this restaurant was great fun. read more

My mom and I had a delightful lunch at the new Southern Social. Mom has roots from Kentucky and is a Proper Judge of a biscuit and catfish. We ordered the biscuits and had no leftovers. I would eat another right now. She enjoyed her catfish and especially the grits. I ordered the BBQ hoecakes because our waitress recommended them, and the name was too good to not say aloud in an order. They were delicious--on the sweeter side with the BBQ. The restaurant is beautiful with splashy fun touches like copper pots, funky lights, and a cool bar. Our waitress was helpful, and we enjoyed chatting with her. It had all the Southern charm of fresh, tasty food with a modern flare in style, sauces, and garnishes. I will absolutely be back because the cobbler and rumcake are calling. read more

We've been here three times now, and we will absolutely be back again! Everything we've eaten here has been TOP NOTCH. Such good food, so many unique pieces made from scratch. Their meats! The pork (on the nachos), the burnt ends (on the flatbread), and oh THE PASTRAMI...all amazing. I usually go for nachos but they have to be good... and these are super solid, no complaints, one of my favorites. Love the meat, sauces, pickled onions, and chips. Only thing I would change would be to add more pickled onions. Burnt ends flatbread is killer. Way better crust than most flatbreads, and not skimpy like most. Big winner. Everything else we've had is great. Cocktails are spectacular too. Our service has been actually some of the best. We've had three different servers and all three were some of the best service we've had. Only thing is that they do unfortunately add a surcharge onto the bill (that is NOT a tip). I had heard this restaurant opened right in our backyard and was excited to check it out. The highlight of our dinner was the Hoe-Cakes appetizer! The sweet and savory combo of the pancake and pulled pork was a nice contrast. I liked the fried chicken in how crispy it was but there was something a little too thick about the breading for my taste. The wedge was good but needed a little more of the really delicious buttermilk dressing and was a little light on bacon. Basically the iceberg to topping ratio was a little off. I think the biscuits would have been better right out of the oven or served fresh but we asked for three and they only brought two. So by the time we waited on the third they were no longer warm and a little too hard/dry to really enjoy unfortunately. The concept and menu here are good and while the service feels like it's working out the bugs, I will come back because I want to give the food another chance! read more

Nifty new venue over in Eagan with a heck of a bourbon and whiskey cocktail menu that is worth venturing into... For the food, tried the pimento cheese with house crackers which was quite good. Crackers are nice and crisp with plenty of cheese to load up on. Next up was their "famous" chicken tenders. Wasn't sure about ordering them, and while I probably wouldn't on a return visit, they were a very solid version. However, their Voodoo sauce is VERY spicy.... So use a bit of caution if thinking of diving into that side of things. All in all, a lot of menu items I'd come back to try and very solid cocktail list. read more

Went to this place for a group event. The good: The outdoor patio is beautiful and a reason to go on a beautiful day. The cornbread appetizer is fantastic in terms of flavor and texture. The not so great: nearly all the entrees. Many of my colleagues had the fried chicken and said it was not authentic and a bit bland. Worse, the sides tasted old....whether it was the corn, mashed potatoes, etc. it may have been because we were a larger group but the food (including my entree) tasted like it sat under a heat lamp for some time.
