This was my first time to Sovana Bistro. The space is beautiful. Our service was rather good. You can tell the wait staff works well together. I enjoyed a three cheese cheese board and my husband the tuna tartare. We split the prosciutto pizza. All was delicious. The house made chips and pizza crust were very well done. Came here for late evening repast after a long day at Longwood Gardens. Food [A] The duck breast here is prepared quite well. Juicy inside and delicate crust outside with aptly paired sides. The honey BBQ lamb ribs (seasonal appetizer) intrigued me, and didn't disappoint. Everyone at the table seemed to enjoy their entrees. Pricing was reasonable for the quality of food. Service [A] There were no hiccups for this price point. Drinks were refilled regularly and food came out at a reasonable pace. Waitstaff were pleasant and enthusiastic, which is always a plus. Ambiance [A] My initial impression while driving down the two-lane road became more skeptical the more rural the landscape became. When you arrive at the complex, it's like a mix of office buildings and strip mall. At that point, I basically had no expectations. Perhaps that elevated my observation. The place was already packed, but luckily seating was available. I think just 10-15 min after my arrival, the wait time soared to 1 hour or more. Poisson distribution :) Anyways, don't let the drive in and the surrounding commercial-ish area deter you. The interior is well decorated, and has a modern, but rustic feel. Sovana has been a family favorite for the last decade - their fare has evolved from simpler bistro standards to innovative gourmet dishes, but their commitment to quality of food and service remains unchanged. For our most recent meal, we ordered the roasted quail appetizer - the portion was huge (one whole stuffed quail!), the stuffing was melt-in-your-mouth tender, and the black truffle-carrot puree was perfect. For our entrées we ordered the Hudson Valley duck breast and the ricotta gnocchi with duck ragù special. The duck breast was lean yet succulent, well-complemented by the earthy flavors of the celery root purée and braised red cabbage. The duck ragù component of the gnocchi dish was delicious - rich, tender, and perfectly savory. However, the gnocchi...was unlike any other gnocchi I'd ever had before. Rather than the fluffy texture of ricotta gnocchi, I felt the texture more resembled mozzarella string cheese sticks. They were dense, chewy, weirdly bouncy, and looked like they'd been sliced from a tube. I ended up only eating a few bites of the "gnocchi" and instead enjoyed the ragù as a super-rich standalone stew. The gnocchi was the only stumble in an otherwise excellent meal. Everything from the service to the food to the desserts (the butterscotch cake is to die for) reflected the ever-rising quality of Sovana Bistro. It's thrilling to know each time we come back to Sovana, something will have improved, and somehow, they will have pushed the borders of creativity a little further. My first time at this place, and probably will be my last. Prices are really high, especially for what you end up with and the food was too rich and greasy including the pizza. My wife and I both took things home, that ended up in the trash - we just didn't want the indigestion 2 times in a row from this place. As others have said, the prices are high - great example is we ordered 2 sides of French fries as an appetizer for the 4 people at the table - maybe it's a one-off thing but both orders of french fries had about 15 fries in them. When I paid the bill, I was shocked they were $18 for 2 of them.. yeah not a typo - $18 for 2 - which is about $0.60 per french fry. I could see if they were covered in some special topping but plain old friend fries. The bill for 4 people was over $350 and I had pizza.. Almost like they are trying to make up for the loss of income during the rebuild in a few months. read more

We had a great lunch here yesterday before going to Longwood Gardens. We decided to eat at the bar after the hostess said there would be a 15 minute wait for the table ?? many empty tables inside & out?? The bar worked out fine. Shane was our bartender and took care of us. We started with the Merriam Savingnon Blanc - which was very good - nice and crisp and dry. The wine went perfectly with the Corn Soup with Pancetta and Jalapenos - the broth and fresh corn were delicious and it was served piping hot. FC had the pasta special - Fettucine & Lobster in a creamy tomato sauce. The lobster flavor was very prominent and the dish had plenty of lobster. Good portion size for a lunch entree. I had the Corn Pizza pulling the fresh corn theme thru the meal. It was very good - again with jalapeños and some cojito? cheese. Had half left to take home. Overall an excellent meal - we could really appreciate the skills of the kitchen and the hospitality of the staff during our visit. read more

Well after 50-100 or more visits (possibly more) over the last 5 years, I can conclude that the observations below are not only excellent but also reliably consistent. This is the standout destination within a few minutes of KSQ for a comfortable (without being boring), tasty (without being weird) and friendly night out. You might not guess so from the outside. The location is a bit uninspired - in a little strip mall on 82. Not their fault. But once you step in, get a genuine friendly welcome, see the Edison light bulbs and wood beams, the buzz at the bar and the tables full of happy eaters - some families, some old timers, some first (or feels like first) dates, you know you are ... well, ... coming home. And now you know why the parking lot was pretty full. The food is sort of farm to table. Seasonal. Varies enough to keep us interested once or twice (or more) a month. Similar enough to know there'll be something great. And if you start coming here too often, there's a daily set of specials. Sometimes they're so good they get upped to the main menu. Sometimes (like a favorite sport shirt) they have to be retired, or at least rotated off. That's just to make space for new stuff [but please bring back the veal steak this fall]. Fish of the day is always a good bet. So is the wild boar pappardelle, the tuna tartare. And the cocktail list. And the IPA choices. And fabulous, friendly, unobtrusive but welcoming service. On a very busy Friday night: cocktails fabulous (try their take on a Negroni!) apps at the table interesting and delicious. (Pate for me) Entrees great but pizza was just OK. Saved room for dessert-all dining companions were pleased. Bread pudding as good as my own. Had a really great meal here with my wife. We came on a Sunday while enjoying a long weekend and were disappointed that we couldn't come back the next night. I would highly recommend the farro and white bean salad. Very rich, flavorful and filling. There was a price fixed meal with a smaller version that I wish I had gotten. Also had a pasta and sausage special entree that was excellent. The blueberry crisp with corn ice cream was very good, although the corn flavor was mostly not noticeable unless you tasted the ice cream separately. Would definitely go back! read more

We've been going to Sovano for quite some time now, since we live less than a mile from this restaurant. Tonight's experience was very, very disappointing. It did not live up to any of the previous experiences. The food was fine. Nick, our server, was ok... but it did feel at times we were an afterthought. He'd stop back on occasion, but not at all to the level of service we experienced previously at Sovano. When the hostess and server tried to lift and move a table, and pass over our table and heads to set another table for another party, that was the the ultimate in not caring about the customer. It's very sad to see the service and caring for the patron not to the level of what made Sovano Bistro special. read more

YUM! My sister, mom and I dined here tonight and enjoyed ourselves immensely. The mezze appetizer was delectable, especially the pita and hot feta dip part. We also enjoyed the eggplant tart, apple salad, papardelle with wild boar bolognese, plus the prosciutto and Margharita pizzas. Additionally, we thought the service was incredible. Janine and her team are a well-oiled group and worked seamlessly together.They are attentive but not intrusive. I highly recommend this restaurant for food quality and service. We ended up after spending the day at Winterthur. A nice little find...the decor is appealing, our server was great and the food was good, albeit with a few minor quibbles. We started with French onion soup, which was topped with French fried onions. They were a fun and tasty touch, but ended up soaking up so much of the broth that it was almost stew-like. And the broth was good, so it would have been nice to have it not all absorbed. Hubs enjoyed his standard burger. My quiche was good, but baked into a small circular shape. I prefer a wedge, so you get more filling than crust. However, the crust was flaky and tender. Each came with a nice side salad. The bread basket was delish. Came with my wife for our first anniversary and had a wonderful meal. Food and drinks were delicious. My wife, who has Celiac's, was elated to find a ton of gluten free options. The chef even adapted the pasta special of the night to make it gluten free. Came here looking for a good meal after seeing many great reviews on yelp. The service was excellent, we were seated quickly and approached by a waiter within a reasonable amount of time. The full order was one beer, an appetizer (charcuterie board) and two main dishes (the steak and the brick chicken), including the tip the meal came out to $117. We thought that the charcuterie board was decent, not amazing, it just felt a little boring given the scope of the other menu items. For the meals, the steak was cooked to order but it was a pretty tough cut of meat. I had expected a restaurant of this caliber to serve a nicer cut of meat. I had the Amish brick chicken which was very good. The restaurant was somewhat noisy but definitely manageable. Nothing of the meal was particularly baaad... it just wasn't as good as I had thought the reviews made it out to be. read more

Decided to try it tonight and I feel like a prize idiot for waiting so long! The food - perfect. The service - above and beyond. The prices - TOTALLY reasonable. The atmosphere - warm and inviting. It was the best night out I've had in forever. Our server knocked it out of the park, making awesome recommendations and bringing us lovely tastings from the kitchen. This is a 100% true story. Last night, my lovely wife and I had dinner at Sovana. As usual, the servers were top-notch: polished, competent, friendly, relaxed. Halfway through our meal, a wasp flew in through the door and landed on our table (this is Chester County; these things happen.) It crawled over to my wife's plate, and perched on her knife. I looked at the wasp for a moment, trying to decide what to do. Do I start flailing around with my napkin? Do I overturn the table? How do I kill this wasp without smashing the stemware? Instantly, our busboy appeared; my wife says he had been tracking the wasp across the restaurant, weaving between the closely-spaced tables all the way from the door. Our busboy immediately reached down and, like Gary Busey in Lethal Weapon, GRABBED THE KNIFE AND WASP IN HIS HAND, then vanished. Moments later, he re-appeared with a new knife on a small platter: "A fresh knife for you", he murmured, then disappeared again -- possibly to run far enough out the back door so that we would not be discomfited by the sound of his screams. Well done, that busboy. Well done, Sovana Bistro. That was the single most impressive bit of five-star service I have ever seen. read more

Better make a reservation as this place was packed on a Saturday nite...The ambiance is relaxing, yet a bit noisy...But that just goes to show the popularity of this joint. The bar was loaded. The drink menu was plentiful from the craft beers to the whiskey flights. The food was extremely enjoyable from the bread to the food samples, right on down to Fran's wood-fired meatball pizza...Had a slice of the pepperoni too...Yum! The burgers are sizable, so bring your appetite, as the shoestring French fries were salty crack! Oh, and since you are in mushroom lands, don't forget the mushroom side. Have to have them. Will definitely return if out that way again. Last thing, the decor is cozy and pleasing to the eye, and the staff were attentive and service appropriate. I wanted to love this place. It has a cool idea. The food is fresh and produced mainly locally. Everything in there is pretty interesting, down to the bread bowl, There were long pretzel-like things in there that I had never seen before. The decor was pretty good, but I kept joking about how the windows had chain-mail curtains, that didn't quite fit. The food was delicious, but the portions were tiny. I heard the waiter say that the portions were 'realistically' sized I ordered butternut squash tortellini (for $23) and received 6 or 7 pieces of moderately sized pasta, with some mystery foam on the top. I'll say it again, it was delicious, but 6 or 7 pieces for $23??? Sovana Bistro advertises casual dining but, I'm not so sure about that. My trifted sweater seemed quite out of place. Perhaps it was my 'cutting edge hairstyle' that delivered us the corner table within elbow-bumping room of the next table (did I mention that It wasn't even busy and there was plenty of room.) And apparently, the hostess who appeared to be 16 at best decided that I didn't deserve a beverage menu. I was planning on having one...until I decided that their profit margin on the butternut squash tortellini would be large enough. From the second I walked into this restaurant I knew everything was going to be spectacular. The decor, the ambience and the staff are all phenomenal. I've never tasted food like this before. I wanted to check out the mushroom capital of the world, and in the process found Sovana bistro on yelp, and thought it was a must try. I tried to make a reservation on Open Table a few days in advance, but only 5 pm or 9pm time slots were available. We showed up instead without a reservation, granted way on the early side (turns out there's not that much to the mushroom capital). We were seated immediately. We started with the seasonal antipasto. Four out of the five morsels on it were excellent. I was underwhelmed by the salad, but I saw the purpose it served: a fresh, light, and crisp item to cut against the fat of the souffle, panini and chips and dip. Oh the chips and dip were good. I think the waiter caught me eating a piece of the dip off of the table... it's clean, right? We also had the chowder in the squash bowl. It was such a creative dish. The chowder was not overpowering which I appreciated. That you could eat the squash was so cool. We then shared the wagyu beef and eggs dish. I thought the steak was excellent; my boyfriend thought it was just average. I loved the egg with it, and the corn. We concluded with the caramel dessert. Oh. my. god. I think dessert is an even tougher hurdler than dinner, because so many chocolate cakes are essentially the same. But this caramel cake dessert was totally unique, and totally delicious. Love. Service was excellent; they put up with my boyfriend and I taking our sweet old time to order, enjoy our drinks, and just sit together. I never would have expected to find such a gem of a restaurant in the suburbs outside of Wilmington, DE -- but let me chime in with the other reviewers to say that this is a destination worth the trip. I was in the Chadds Ford PA area for a girls weekend and we had a lovely dinner at Sovana Bistro that was probably the highlight of the trip. (The creepy, smelly B&B where we stayed helped tip the scales in favor of Sovana Bistro...but we all agreed that it was a great find). There were 8 of us having dinner and we tried all different things: the antipasto platter with delicious tastes of things, Gazpacho soup special (creamy, rich, and somehow light all at the same time??!), the Watermelon Salad, meatball pizza, seafood sausage, and several of the homemade pasta dishes. There wasn't anything that we tried that we didn't love, although the pastas were particularly good. In addition to the high-caliber food, the service was also worthy of a "5 star" rating. The waitress was attentive but didn't rush us, and she did a great job describing the food and recommending different options. Unfortunately they had run out of the peach crisp by the end of the evening -- but we ended up ordering the cookie ice cream sandwich and a creme brulee and were not disappointed. Even though everyone said they were too full for dessert, we were licking the plates clean because it was so delicious! WOW! If I opened a restaurant, I'd want it to be Sovana! What a beautiful atmosphere. We went at 7:30 on a Friday night and sat outside at a big farmhouse table under the tent. All the tables were full, but our waiter Phillip was so prompt and attentive, you would've believed we were the only ones there. He talked about the specials and local ingredients with the passion and familiarity I've only heard on Iron Chef! Later, he offered some spot-on wine pairings based on what we told him we liked, e.g. "Usually we drink New Zealand Sauv Blanc, but want to venture out." So that's the service and the ambiance. Lively crowd, BTW, excellent first date or private party place. The cadence of the meal, too, was perfect. We were neither waiting nor rushed. The food. You must order the mushroom side! Kale salad was also delectable and we enjoyed the skirt steak. My father-in-law, who never cleans his plate, raved about the Arctic Char on special. And the craft cocktails were unique, well-balanced and inventive. The only slight disappointment was the ice cream and cheesecake desserts, but will give them a pass since they lost everything due to a power outage that week. Will definitely be back. I have dined at Sovana Bistro three times and had some amazing food here. They have a prized hangar steak with frites that they prepare for something like 3 days. On my first trip, they had just run out, so I ordered an alternative choice and was not disappointed. I do recall getting some homemade boar bolognese which was to die for. Similar to the other review, I would have like a bigger portion though. On my second trip, I had the prized hangar steak w/ frites, and it was to die for. A beef lovers' dream with perhaps the most perfect frites I ever consumed anywhere, ever. They also have a mushroom pizza which is a mandatory order for any mushroom lover. Sovana Bistro could get a ding for portions, prices, etc.. but I feel they earn a 5 star for the food alone! read more
