This is one the best restaurants I've been to in a long time. First, the ambiance was great, beautifully decorated and styled. Makayla was our waitress and she was absolutely wonderful. Happy to take care of us, always smiling and made us feel special. Her description of food made me want to order the entire menu, a true pro. The drinks and food were promptly served and all was delicious. The rest of the staff couldn't be happier to accommodate us. By the way, we went there for brunch and dinner because we loved it so very much. The staff recognized us from earlier and were so grateful that we came back. Had the worst experience. We went for a birthday. The management treated us terrible. We just wanted a good meal, drinks and to have a good night. Too stuffy for us. Would not recommend unless you are looking for a quiet meal. Also very pricey for what you get. Foos is sub par. Your not in the city. read more

Our group enjoyed Sovana Bistro very much! We shared a number of dishes.. one better than the next. We were seated in the main dining room - they do have inside and outside seating available. They seem to have tables everywhere; though it didn't feel crowded. Shared: Boar bolognese - so savory (1/2 order - love that you can do 1/2 orders; it was a hefty serving) Tuna Tartar - very fresh. It was on a bed of avocado. Served with homemade chips. There was an olive tapenade smear and a small pile of preserved grapefruit - not sure why either was there. None the less, the Tina was fresh. The soup special was gazpacho; it was fresh and savory Filet - perfectly cooked and seasoned Chicken under brick - so moist and flavorful Braised short rib - fork tender and yummy Some in our group, "had to have" dessert. I was seriously impressed by my experience here for lunch on a Saturday. My bf and I made a reservation because we didn't know how busy it may be. It wasn't crowded but many tables were set up for reservations. We were seated immediately and waters/complimentary bread arrived shortly afterward. The bread was warm and delicious. I also had a latte which was great. My bf loved the eggs Benedict special which had pork belly and vegetables and home fries. I had the special sandwich and a side salad. The sandwich was the best part of our meal with walnut pesto, prosciutto, and roasted peppers. We also shared the roasted Brussels which were delicious! (Who doesn't love bacon+ Brussels) The service here was so flawless I wish they would train all other restaurants. From start to finish all employees were pleasant and accommodating! We are visiting but anytime I'm in the area we will make a point to return. Overall the food was wonderful, portions generous and service was excellent! read more

What's delicious dinner! A fantastic farm to table restaurant. The meze platter was delicious with the the homemade lavash. Be sure to tell them of any allergies - they were super accommodating. We ate at Sovana recently and our meal was pretty horrible. We called ahead to do carry out and spoke to the extremely friendly hostess who took our order. When we arrived I was informed that the fries that are served with the burger we ordered are cooked after the customer arrives so that they are crisp. Unfortunately this was really the only good thing we ate. We started off with the Spanish octopus which was a smallish tentacle served with small potatoes, chorizo, romanesco, and an olive and lemon vinaigrette. I didn't see any chorizo anywhere but there were onions on top of the octopus that were not part of the description. Not that it mattered much, as the sauce that was served with the octopus was a smoky gluey mess that did nothing to hide the slightly over cooked octopus. My wife's burger was ok. It was two smaller patties and served smash burger style. I tried to order it medium rare but was informed that they just cook the burgers one way. It was decent enough but for $17 I would not try to recreate something you could get at Five Guys for half the price. As mentioned before, the shoestring fries that came with it were good. For some reason I ordered a barbecued half chicken for $38. In my defense, I tried to order the daily fish special, which was swordfish, but was informed that the fish can't be ordered to go. Why? I have no clue, especially when other restaurants seem to be embracing take out customers. Anyway, my chicken was in a word awful. It was boneless and served with an achiote glaze, a few pieces of picked onion, cucumber, and pineapple, and a corn 'soubise' which is a type of sauce. The chicken was dry and overcooked and despite trying to cover it up with the little sauce that came with it, I gave up and only ate half of it, since to be honest it tasted a lot like the octopus for some reason. Looking back on it, it was the worst BBQ chicken I ever ate at any price (much less $38). It's really a shame that the food at Sovana (or what you are permitted to take out) pales in comparison to the really nice people that work there. read more

Everything is excellent here ... albeit a little pricey. The crispy brussel sprouts with pancetta and balsamic glaze were amazing, as was the mezze platter appetizer. We had several pasta dishes at the table ... All very freshly made pasta cooked to perfection. The wild boar meat sauce is a favorite ... And the meatballs were very good too. The pizza was ok. I was told that Sovana had the best pizza in the area, and they did not disappoint! My family and I have lived in (and had lots of pizza in) places like New York, New York, Geneva, Switzerland, and San Francisco, CA - I mean, it may be an overstatement to say that Sovana's pizza is the best in the world until we've traveled a bit more, but it's the best pizza I've had out of those places, at least. We tried the local sweet corn, fig, and pepperoni pizzas. Pepperoni is a classic, of course, and it was perfectly done. The local sweet corn pizza was unlike anything I've ever had before - I'm not sure who had the epiphany that corn, salami, and jalapenos would go together quite like that, but they sure were right! It was like a party in your mouth. The fig pizza was sweet and delicious, with the salty bacon serving as a perfect offset to the sweet figs. We also tried the watermelon salad, which was inventive and scrumptious. They served it with big hunks of perfectly ripe watermelon, and the mix with the olive tapanade and other taste sensations was pretty remarkable. We had takeout, so cannot comment on the ambiance of the restaurant itself, but I have heard that one of the best interior designers in the country worked on the decor, so I am excited to see it on our next visit to town. Sovanna used to rock. Now it's passionless & the food is tasteless. We have complained more than once but the chef never changed a thing. Nothing improved. They took our money and just didn't seem to care. Chef is in the wrong business because how could a real "chef" serve food that is absolutely tasteless. The fish is very fresh...but the chef did nothing to it aside from making it "no longer raw", yet charged astronomical prices for zero effort on the kitchen's part. Smh! But......If u want a great bar and an even greater bartender go there for cocktails!! Bo is excellent!!! Fast, kind, attentive and pours a mean drink. Plus he's totally hot. But if you want to eat great food that you're going to be paying a ton of money for, I recommend going someplace else. **I should add I haven't been to Sovanna for nearly a year. As i slowly grind away the Philly magazine list of top 50 restaurants, I found myself in Kennett square. The location does not scream fine dining but the inside is beautifully decorated. I started off with a mojito. The drink was a bit strong on the rum but still consumable. I got the calamari as an appetizer and was perfectly salted. I finished up with the asparagus ravioli. I was hoping for something as good as a lobster ravioli but was disappointed. Still it was a great experience and worth a return or two. read more

I live in the area and had a friend recommend Sovana Bistro because of the food and the atmosphere. I had a chance to go in May and had an interesting experience. While walking in we were greeted by 2 of the young hostesses at the door and another behind the host stand. The host behind the host stand was tan with dark hair, we later learned she was the owners daughter. She seemed nice but there was an underlying tone of entitlement and "im better than you" in the way she talked. We were seated and I watched as she interacted with the other girls who worked up front. They all seemed very on edge any time she spoke to them. At one point during the night she seemed stressed and when one of the hosts with long brown hair went up to help she snapped at her and we were shocked. We watched as her face drained and she walked back to grab a drink of water. All I wanted to go was give that poor girl a hug! She also didn't seem to follow any of the standards/rules that the other girls were following like standing at the door to greet people. We had good service from our server and the food was great however the atmosphere just seemed very tense and unenjoyable and if I felt that as a guest I cant imagine how the employees feel. After seeing how the owners daughter was treating the other girls I would NOT want my daughter getting within 10 feet from this place. She seemed very catty and drama oriented and I wouldn't be surprised if people have left because of her. She even made me uncomfortable. I may return but hopefully on a night where she isn't working. And for the poor girl she snapped at...I hope she doesn't work there anymore! read more

Amazing restaurant! Very charming spot to visit with friends or even a date night. My friend and I went at lunch and the server was very considerate and asked right off the bat if either of us have food allergies, which I do. Being gluten and dairy free, he walked through all the menu items that I could have and told us the specials. The wait for the food was a little long but it's worth it as the food is very fresh and delicious. I got the al pastor tacos which were INCREDIBLE and didn't even taste gluten free. My parents and I were being tourists in Kennett Square for the weekend. We found this place online, and it had good reviews, so gave it a shot. It was a busy place -- loud and crowded on a Saturday night, which seemed like a good sign upon walking in the door. If I was ranking on food alone, this place would get 4 stars easily. Unfortunately, we encountered a number of service flaws that left me less-than-impressed. Starting with the food and drinks, we got cocktails at the bar. I would not recommend the Pisco Sour, but I really liked my Negroni. We got a bottle of wine with dinner, but be advised we saw several tables BYOB, so I guess this is an option, just not highly advertised. We had salads, which were quite large for one person, shared the fig and prosciutto pizza, and had the duck breast, skirt steak, and pork loin as entrees. Everything was definitely tasty, the portions were sizeable, and nicely presented. On to the service...1. took forever to get ice water upon getting seated, finally had to ask. 2. After ordering and waiter telling us bread was coming, bread never came. Once again asked, got bread, and then our appetizers came out 2 seconds later. 3. I asked for my salad to be wrapped up so I didn't spoil my appetite. Never got the salad back after they took it back to the kitchen to pack up. 4. Took way to long to get our entrees. 5. Never actually got silverware to eat dessert. Went ahead and used our coffee spoons, instead. I will say, they get some credit for trying to remedy the service flaws. They brought out 3 glasses of champagne, and our desserts were on the house. We didn't even have to say anything, they just did this, knowing that we waited a long time for our entrees. If you have good service, this place would be spot on. Unfortunately, I probably won't be rushing back next time we are in the area. read more

THE WORST WAITER IVE EVER HAD! Unprofessional, didn't know the specials, didn't clear the table between courses, took forever to take our orders, didn't fill up our waters until we asked. He also said, "you get a free desert for your birthday." At this type of restaurant you'd expect a waiter to have better decorum and say "we'd like to offer you a complimentary dessert for your birthday." He was completely unpolished and annoying. He tried to make up for his terrible table side manner by attempting to be charming, which completely failed. The pasta special was great. Burger boring. Calamari way too salty. Yah know those restaurants that when you leave you know that nothing could have been done better? Yah, Sovana Bistro makes you feel that way. My friend and I had tickets to see a show at Longwood Gardens last week and, just for a change of scenery, wanted to try a restaurant out in the suburbs instead of in the city. We did a quick Google search and stumbled upon Sovana Bistro's menu. We saw they had an artisanal cheese plate and were done searching (I have an affinity for cheese plates :/ ) The decor is very chic, trendy, and relaxing! Our server was very knowledgable and friendly. There were all different types of food runners and bussers that serviced our table and every single one of them was friendly. To start, we both had a glass of Montepulciano and split the cheese plate. Instead of the server just telling you what cheeses they had, they were written out on the dessert menu, with a short little description. We had a blue cheese, an Italian one, and an American cheddar. Each was paired with a spread and some candied assorted nuts. The cheese plate was just phenomenal. Another nice touch, one of the multiple food runners brought us out a taste of rainbow chard and some vegetable (I can't remember what), which were compliments of the chef. Very classy, Sovana Bistro, very classy! After the cheese plate we each had salads. I had the apple salad which was just great- beautiful presentation, so fresh and light! For my entree, I had the Moroccan-braised lamb that came with couscous, pita, chick pea fritters, and a mint-pesto sauce. The lamb was falling apart and the presentation was, once again, perfect. For dessert, we shared some of the homemade ice cream. OMG GET THE HOMEMADE ICE CREAM. We had 2 scoops of chocolate and the ice cream special which was banana stracciatella. It did not disappoint. Do be aware that this restaurant is on the pricey side but is totally TOTALLY worth it. read more

I had remembered that everything I ate from this restaurant years ago was executed nicely and was creative. This holds true as of last evening. Beau-the bartender- provided the best service to us (a group of cackling women enjoying multiple cosmos and glasses of wine). He was friendly and prompt- I was never without a beverage. Now the good stuff: the food. We ordered a corn pizza- ugh it was so good, complete with jalepeno, and salami. We also ordered the asparagus and egg pizza which was equally as delicious. For my main, I ordered the small size of the wild boar papardelle- the flavors were amazing, but the temperature was luke warm. I was impatient so I did not send it back. The smaller of the two portions is the perfect size when ordering appetizers. This restaurant is very pricey, but the quality of food is worth it. What an absolutely fantastic dining experience, one of the best of my life. I went on a late Sunday afternoon and it was very crowded. Me and my date didn't have reservations, so we were seated at a very tiny and awkward table by the window. Sovana Bistro is in a strip mall, so the window doesn't exactly provide a great view. The table was so cramped, I had a difficult time just getting in and out of my seat. But that would be the only complaint of the night. The waitress brought complementary glasses of champage. We had brought wine from the Chaddsford Winery, but it turned out to be unneccesary as the champagne lasted the night. And it was good. I started with the "artisanal" pepperoni pizza appetizer. I laughed at their attempt to make it sound like more than a pepperoni pizza, but it turned out to be one of the 5 best pizzas I've ever tasted, made with spicy pepperoni, fresh local mushrooms, and shallots. I ordered the free range chicken with butternut squash and brussel sprouts for an entree. Chicken can be boring, but this chicken was bursting with flavor and juiciness. The dessert was also spectacular: a vanilla bean creme brulee with fresh berries. While waiting for the appetizers and the entrees, one of the waitstaff came to the table both times with complementary samples of various items from the menu. It was a nice little touch that makes you feel special, even if you're not. All in all, the food was great, service good, and the price wasn't crippling. The salads were tasty, and the crème brûlée fir dessert was delicious. The wait staff were friendly and moved the dinner along at a good pace despite the restaurant being very busy.
