Terrible service. We walked in without being welcomed. We ordered two glasses of wine, a charcuterie board and avocado toast. My friend was unable to eat the avocado toast because it was full of onions. Our waitress never checked in with us until we had finished our glass of wine. We let her know our issue with the avocado toast and she did not believe us and said there weren't any onions in there. The avocado was more like guacamole. Our bill came and the toast was not removed from our bill. I asked her to remove it and she said "well I feel like I need to charge you, but ok I won't." Our wine charge was incorrect and she said "well it's the same price anyway." Once we paid and were getting ready to leave, she never once acknowledged us as customers. So i was not sure what to expect when I walked in. There were only 2 other folks in there...I sat in a chair that the foot rest was broken. He wouldn't let us move a chair over from another table. I sort of felt like that they needed to spend a bit more money for tables and chairs. But our wines were excellent. We purchased a bottle to go and that was amazing. The owner was friendly and a Chicago Cubs fan so I can't really complain. I am not sure how long they have been open. I hope he is successful. (Spend a little money on your decor). I do recommend it. Stopped in here one day while walking around town. I decided to walk in and just see what the place was like. The man behind the counter was very informative about the wines and locales making up the Monterey County wine region. Turns out that the two wines I tasted were more southern Monterey County, but that's okay. I enjoyed the wines I tasted and ended up buying a bottle of each. While I was there a few other people came in and were helped by him. He pointed one lady to some whites she was looking for as a gift for a friend of hers. Another person was looking for some wines she was used to seeing on each trip she made there, but didn't leave disappointed since she found some others she wanted. All in all, this wine shop provided a nice break in the day. read more

We found this wine bar while strolling around Monterey one evening recently. We were excited to try some local Carmel valley wines and thats exactly what they had. They had a build your own tasting flight (five from seven) choices. It was perfect. They also had some nibbles to eat so I didn't fall down from a wine buzz on too few calories. The owners recently moved in to the spot across from the Portola hotel and spa and are so enthusiastic. They shared recommendations for local restaurants and wineries to visit. This place is great! My boyfriend and I are newbies to wine but the gentleman who helped us (I believe his name was John?) was very helpful and enthusiastic. We came at the end of the night so he gave us quite a few samples. We came back the next day and he helped us again, and we bought two more bottles. There were a few rambunctious (read: drunk) couples in there on our second visit and he handled them easily with a smile. They have a good collection with many local (and not so local) wines to choose from. I'd say try the Line Shack Chardonnay or the Eberle Muscat Canelli. They are both white and completely different but I enjoyed them and so did my boyfriend. (The Muscat is very sweet, so that's got my vote!) We'll be back! I have been in this Wine Bar on several occasions. I try to stop in any time I'm in the area. I've referred people to the bar, for tastings or to purchase wine, but lately lots of times they've called me to tell me the Wine Bar wasn't even open. That's actually happened a lot. I've even wondered if they've gone out of business. Unfortunately my experiences here vary. It depends on who is working as to whether I stay and enjoy the afternoon, or I leave largely disappointed. There is a gentleman that works there that is very fun, knowledgeable and has referred me to many other very fine establishments in the area. Great for the city. economy : ) But then, there has been times that I've been in there and felt that the bartender herself was drinking and barely able to function as a bartender, and I've heard that she is the owner. Not good! For anyone! Any rate, this place is hit or miss. Mostly miss because it's hard to catch them open.....But if you can, hope for anyone other than "the owner" to be there to help you out. read more

We spent a very enjoyable evening in Sovino recently. It was quiet when we were there, and Jason chatted to us like we were old friends. It's a lovely space and they have a good choice of wines. Happy Hour is excellent value! The only downside to me was that I felt $15 for a tasting was pretty expensive, seeing as it was a very small serving of each wine. So I went here on a date, and it was the best date spot I've ever been to. James was so nice, friendly, and funny and totally made us comfortable. He let us pick the wines we wanted to try, for a super amazing price, and kept us laughing with insights about wine and the local community. We were joined by some other bar goers in a side splitting game of wine trivia, and left only when they shooed us out the door after closing, with a great bottle of wine. If you're looking for a great environment, good wine, and laughter this is for sure a place to check out. I know I'll be going back for game nights! read more

Total bummer! After seeing a huge sign advertising "Wine Tasting," my husband and I stopped into this place for wine tasting and the person behind the counter was completely unprepared to serve us. We first asked if they had a list of wines or flights that we could taste. The bartender said that he was in the process of refilling the wines and didn't have a list. He went back to his "refilling" so I inquired about how they did tastings and what else we might be able to drink. He offered us a splash of the ONE wine that he had available. It was good, but overall I got a really bad vibe that he just didn't want to serve us. The place looks super cute and the retail selection was great-- we just left hugely disappointed that they weren't really doing wine tastings or even able to offer wines by the glass during our visit. read more

Such a cute place! I will definitely come back here whenever I'm back in Monterey. I did the 5-wine tasting. My favorite was the Sovino Cab, I ended up buying 3 bottles. The food was tasty, I had the tomato bruschetta and the Brie/arugula bruschetta. I enjoyed the traditional tomato bruschetta more but both were delicious. My husband and I were on our honeymoon and stopped in Monterey for 1 night. We strolled around the Fisherman's Wharf area at night, had dinner and saw Sovino was still open with patrons at the bar having a wine tasting. We were excited to enter, grabbed a tasting menu and out of courtesy, knowing it was past 10PM, asked if they were open and still doing tastings. The bartender looked at his watch, hesitated for about 5 secs with ums and ahs and finally said "Uhhh I guess you can order a glass". Wow. Gee, can I? That was my cue to exit and I made the comment "thanks for making us feel so welcome". He yelled at us "I heard that smartass comment". Ok it was smartass, so what? His demeanor was incredibly unwelcoming, cold and rude. I responded that I would write a nice review on Yelp (again, snarky yes) to which he responded "yeah cuz you spent so much time here". Ok, granted this might be a very nice establishment which normally is very gracious but you don't treat patrons like that. Ones that were excited to come in and sample and purchase. It was just sour and unprofessional, and this guy obviously has very little experience in customer service. read more

This is the coolest wine bar in Monterey. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. The wine selection is superb. They have wine from every region of California. They had a guy on the piano creating a really fun atmosphere. I highly recommend this place. read more

Claire and Jason were great hosts and I had a lovely time joshing with them a few evenings recently (and I'm usually a whisky not a wine man). Also I can recommend the light tasty meals they provided which were almost the only meals I had in my two weeks in America (I'm a damned foreigner) where I didn't feel overstuffed and slightly unwell afterwards. Also the selection of artisan beers were well worth sampling. I was so impressed with the atmosphere that they have created that I'm putting them in my latest book and happy to write a great review so they don't sue me. read more
