Edit 6/28: Thinking back, I realized there were actually 2 types of cars on this ride: one that seats 2 people each, and another that sits just one person per seat. The "one-person-seat" (1PS) is not nearly as exciting as the "2-people-seat" (2PS). It doesn't have the exciting "tight turns", "invading your partner's space" as you're thrown towards them, and the feeling of being "hanging off the side of your car as you're holding onto the bar for dear life". I feel the 1PS just goes on a straight line/tunnel with a few tight turns but that's it. Kinda fun but disappointing now that I've rode on both cars. Unfortunately, you don't get a chance to choose which car to sit in since it's random. There were 3 girls who are friends and they actually sat in the 1PS car with me. The second time I rode this, I sat on the 2PS with a complete stranger eventually sitting next to me. But if you get lucky with the 2PS then enjoy the ride. It is worth every penny! ------ The wildest ride in the happiest place on earth! Get ready to feel that burst of speed as your spacecraft blasts into the dark tunnels of space, and feel the whip of your body being tossed to the side as your ship makes a sharp left turn (and possibly even invading your seat partner's space), and then when the ship hits right, hang on tight because you will feel like you're about to fall right off your seat! Remarkable!! This is a ride of a lifetime, definitely not for the faint of heart! So pull down that handlebar, lean as far back as you can, and put on that imaginary helmet because you're in for one memorable experience as you explore space in the fastest spacecraft ever! Okay, enough of the exciting bits. Down to the boring stuff, like queue lines : The line here can really long, very fast with really long wait times. But not as bad as say Indiana Jones, Splash Mountain... maybe. I went on this ride maybe around the afternoon and it was almost a 50 minute wait. The line outside is slow moving but once you actually get inside the building, it's quick because the loading dock is close by. I say it's worth the wait because this is honestly one of the best rides here in the Magic Kingdom. And who doesn't love a high-speed, pitch-black, rollercoaster-esque ride? If you say no, then we honestly cannot be friends. If you have a large group of friends, keep in mind that this ride only seats 2 people each row. So bring your BFF in case you or your buddy find yourselves leaning against each other during those tight turns! I love this ride and it honestly gets better every time I ride it. I went on this last year and thought it was okay, but wow! This year it felt 10x as fast and crazy, because I was trying so hard not to lean against the stranger next to me! Ahaha. They really do overlays right at Space Mountain. Before this, I thought that Ghost Galaxy was my favorite ride overlay. After this... They changed up the queue, which is a nice bonus. It's so much more than the few flickering screens and "lost signal" notices that one gets in the Ghost Galaxy overlay. You're actually presented with a bit more of a story, and that helps build the atmosphere while increasing anticipation levels. The ride itself is the same, of course, but the things that they injected into this overlay are fantastic! It starts the second your cars move away from the loading bay. The audio, the visuals...they're all there to lay a foundation and reel visitors in. I don't want to give away anything that you'll see or experience, but I hope you believe me when I say that it's absolutely worth waiting in line for (with a Fast Pass, of course), and that you won't be disappointed in the story or the way they present it. The season of the Force! Tomorrowland definitely has a new buzz and his drawing people back to this land like never before with the Star Wars update. Knowing that Space Mountain typically runs out fast passes early without adding the new Star Wars elements, we came first thing to get our fast passes right after park opening. I love how they will update this ride and the ghost galaxy has always been a favorite of mine during Halloween. That being said, this update far exceeds the level of interaction and added features that one would find and ghost galaxy. The projection on the walls of the Tie fighters and Imperial destroyers is cool to see. The added Star Wars soundtrack and audio affects make for a much more immersive experience. Perhaps my favorite and simplest addition is the lighting that makes it appear as if your ride is shooting lasers at the projected images. I cannot wait to go on this multiple times! read more

My all time favorite ride ever!!! Definitely get a fast pass if you can because the ride can get pretty long! There are times when the ride can break down but that is a risk you are going to have to take! lots of snake loop lines if there are lots of people. This is another one of Disney's big draws. I am not a roller coaster fan at all so I was very trepidatious about this but was assured that it was not near the levels of thrill rides on the California Adventure side so I chanced it. We had to book our MaxPass way in advance because it was a popular one. It would periodically disappear from the app. We think it might have been because they filled up on passes for a time slot. You skip a huge portion of the line and it's a little awkward because they kind of just shove you in the middle of the original line instead of having 2 different lines and we accidentally split up a group but let them pass when we realized it. It is extremely dark on the ride. You can't see anything...which is not great for someone that gets motion sick. It is Star Wars themed so you hear blaster fire as you make your way through a space battle. Other than hitting the warp drive at the beginning, you really don't see too much Star Wars other than the occasional green or red lasers that is against a backdrop of stars. I wasn't that impressed with the theme during the ride. read more

The ride itself is pretty much the same as Space Mountain with only a few graphics and music added. If you have to wait two or more hours I'd say it's not worth it. Try other rides and wait until this attraction loses the hype and popularity. The last couple times I've been to Disneyland this ride has been closed and opened and closed just due to it being so old. The carts are the same ones from space mountain and the cushions haven't even been replaced... They're showing their age and am surprised that they didn't change them. The music though a great addition seems to cut in and out during the ride, I believe they still need to work out their kinks and this may take a while. From the looks of things the majority of the riders do like the newly improved ride but again, the ride the other rides or watch the other shows. read more

This ride was our first fast pass of the day. I think this ride was my favorite ride. It was a dark and bumpy rollercoster that had all of us screaming. The lights were cool and we went so fast, we had to hold on. It's so dark you cannot see anything or the track. So you have no idea on which way your going... to the left or to the right.... Best hold on.. The little one was slightly (really) scared and she got a little queasy, which is also in part of her not having eaten anything substantial yet that day, which was planned. We got the rollercoaster type-fast rides out of the way first so none of us would feel too sick with something heavy in our stomachs. So if you're extremely sensible and want to ride this ride, dont eat too much before hand! All in all I really liked this ride and would have ridden it again if I could have! This will always be my favorite ride, for the speed and darkness and the unknown path were taking when on the ride. The lights in the tunnels and the stars, just add to it, making it a super awesome ride. read more

Caution Not a great ride for those who do not enjoy enclosed dark spaces, since 95% of the ride is pitch black. Also, be ready for your picture towards the end! To me the best time to go is mid-day when you're hot and need to cool down. Ask to get up in the front of the log so you get soaked. Problem solved. Instant cool down. Thanks Walt Disney! The interior decor is from Song of the South, a movie Disney doesn't seem to sell or play anymore so the kids have no idea who the characters are. I saw it at the drive in theatre in the 70s and thought Uncle Remus was the greatest. Loved Briar Rabbit, hated Brair Fox. I already said I'm old so chill. This is my all time favorite ride at Disneyland. I came here on a warm Sunday day, and luckily it wasn't too crowded at Disneyland when I visited. The line was about 20 minutes and goes by quickly when you're in line chatting with your friends. If you do not want to wait in line there is also a fast pass line (the entrance is near the Pooh Bear gift store). As you are waiting in line you can also decide what you want to do for your photo! The ride itself is about 5 minutes on a log in the water. There are three drops, the first one is a short outdoor drop. The log then goes indoors, where there is music and robotic characters singing and moving. The second drop is in the dark and goes "up and down" like a hilly drop. The music then turns "scary" as you proceed to the last, steepest drop. This is where the photo takes place so be prepared to pose, or simply just scream. You get to see your photo after you get off the ride and you can even purchase it too! Oh and did I mentioned, you'll get wet! It is Splash Mountain after all. The front seat gets the most soaked, and the back seats you'll stay relatively dry. FYI: At the fast pass collection of the queue, is where the secret Mickey is. When I was a kid, maybe like 10-years old, my family and I didn't know what ride we were getting into. My Lola (grandmother) also went on the ride, and as a kid, I assumed everyone, as adults, knew what they were doing. Poor grandma, getting on a roller coaster, held on to dear life, actually to my shorts, all terrified at the high-speed in the dark and strobe lights. I reassured her, telling her that it's going to be alright and that it's fun. Recently, I learned she told that story over plenty of times and the difference was that she remembered having held my hand when she actually held my shorts, which makes the story even funnier. I've thought of that moment every time I visited and it always made me smile. Sometime in May, I went with classmates from school, a week before graduating from grad school, and shortly after Lola passed away. I went thinking about her and in her memory and it was in her memory and in her honor, mostly a private moment that I shared with one of my companions, told my sister, and sharing today sometime later. I'm sad that she's gone, but I smile that she had a good, long life, and that's one of the moments I remember most as a child. Geez, poor ol' grandma went on a roller coaster... she really lived. Anyhow, it's a good ride! I think a lot of us who ride it think of how it was and it's been updated. It's great still. :) I enjoyed it my last visit. Having only ridden "Ghost Mountain" before... I don't think I'll ever get a chance to try the original Space Mountain... but I enjoyed Hyperspace Mountain! Disney's really milking the Star Wars hype by redoing Space Mountain to have a Star Wars theme. In addition to the Star Wars music, you'll hear communication between Rebels as you're thrown into space at high speeds - literally. Some sequences have you going into hyper drive, while others will have you moving through the darkness with only twinkling lights. I love starry scenes, so the "stars" in the background really help set the mood. Towards the end they do take your picture... I have yet to master the art of making a good face on a roller coaster. =P Despite my fear of roller coasters (seriously I HATE roller coasters)... this one is very tame compared to the roller coasters I've been forced on by friends at Six Flags. It's more immersive than it is thrilling - yeah you'll still be thrown forward at high speeds and feel the G-force in the darkness, but the twinkling lights and radio static of Rebel fighters communicating will make the ride more enjoyable. Heck, it makes the ride more bearable for people like me who really hate roller coasters. There aren't really any dramatic drops or loops - the roller coaster mostly has the high speed tilted effect. It's also very smooth and not as bumpy as Matterhorn (which tbh made me slightly more worried than this ride). So if you're not used to roller coasters, this is a good one to get started. The line is usually really long unless you have a Fast Pass (which sell out quickly) - typically 60 - 90 minutes. We were actually about to head out to Big Thunder Mountain when I noticed the sign above said the wait was only 45 minutes (even though the app said it would be a 90 minute wait). Given Big Thunder Mountain had a similar wait time, we figured now or never. It was about 9:25, so just before the fireworks started... guess everyone's concentrated around the castle at that time. Is it worth the wait? I don't think any ride is worth more than a 1 hr wait at Disneyland... but if you manage to get a Fast Pass or notice the wait time is only 45 minutes, then by all means go for it. Also fun fact, if you don't care about seeing the castle and just want to enjoy the fireworks, the upper balcony of Space Mountain's queue line is an excellent spot for watching the fireworks. read more

I don't know why I've never thought of leaving a review for one of Disneyland's favorite attractions. The ride itself is great! It's super fast and completely in the dark. Which is what makes it so enjoyable, you're not sure what direction you're going in. There are sharp turns, and small drops. You're going at such a fast pace, it is truly exhilarating :) The only thing that makes this ride awful is the wait time. If you don't have a fast pass for this ride, it is honestly not worth it. The wait time takes forever! I waited 2 and 1/2 hours to ride it. Which is not worth the time actually in the ride. With the new fast passes, I feel like more people actually get fast passes... making the stand by time longer than it should be. If you have a fast pass this is worth it. If not, I would highly encourage coming after 11:30 to ride! It goes way faster! read more

I've never reviewed a roller coaster but here goes :) The line was fast so we were grateful. There were two drops that were both fun (the last one the biggest and still fun without being too scary). I recommend getting in the middle if possible, because the back is where all of the water drains, so you get wet without the splashes. And let's be real, if you are going to get wet it's more fun to come from splashes than trickling water. The story and scenes are older but from the traditional song of the south. It's entertaining. There is a camera just as the last drop is, well dropping. This is fun because you get to see everyone's reaction before you go over. Once it goes over you realize it's not that bad. I love the suspense. Lol. My husband's expression was priceless. read more

If you have ridden space mountain before and wondering if the 45 minute wait is worth it to experience the Star Wars reboot, I would suggest to spend your precious Disney time elsewhere. Don't get me wrong, it's a brilliant concept and I love all things Star Wars. But I feel it was a weak effort to blend the two. The potential is endless. I would start with the long line and spicing it up with some of the creativity of star tours. A droid or two would be nice. Ride operators dressed in Star Wars themed outfits would be awesome. But the small cheap screen looping the same 15 second sequence is underwhelming. The ride has a large space ship hanging from the ceiling that could easily be converted to a destroyer. Or x wing fighter. Do it!!! The ride itself has some nice lighting effects and projections but they feel kind of cheap. Maybe the projector isn't bright enough. Loved the concept of laser beams shooting at you but this fell a bit short also. Also the start of the ride is supposed to be hyperspace but it's a slow climb up the incline. Seems out of context. I hope Disney spruces this ride up a bit more. Incorporates more Star Wars into it. Then it will be worth the 45 minute wait. :) read more

During "The Season of The Force" there has been a number of changes to Tomorrowland (even though Star Wars occurred a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away) and the most noted change was to Space Mountain which is now Hyperspace Mountain. Space Mountain is in all five Disney parks, first opening at the Magic Kingdom in January of 1975. After the initial success, another version was completed at Disneyland in May of 1977 along with a restaurant and a Starcade (RIP). In September of 2007, Hong Kong Disney opened the first Ghost Galaxy and the failed Nightmare Nebula opened a month later at Disneyland. Two years later, Disneyland opened its version of Ghost Galaxy for Halloween. At the D23 Expo last year, Disney announced the creation of Hyperspace Mountain as part of "The Season of the Force" and the ride officially opened on November 16, 2015. Once we arrived, Admiral Ackbar jumps on the intercom to announce my favorite phrase "It's a trap!" before Blue Squadron is swarmed by TIE Fighters. Note: Rebel Alliance spies are apparently very apt at stealing Death Star plans, but suck when it comes to reconnaissance missions. While racing around Hyperspace Mountain, you are engaged in a space battle complete with scenes projected on the walls of Hyperspace Mountain and lighting effects to simulate laser cannons. Your mission ends with Blue Squadron successfully blowing up the Star Destroyer and a photo taken of your triumphant return to space dock! All the changes to Space Mountain have to do with visual and sound effects including the Star Wars soundtrack being played while you combating The First Order which has replaced the Galactic Empire as the new evil in the Star Wars galaxy. I'm surprised to be saying this, but what an upgrade! Even though the old Space Mountain ride itself is pretty much the same, it feels like new again thanks to some clever engineering and the addition of Star Wars style! First, the obvious - the ride has been completely decked out with the oh-so-trendy Star Wars theme. From the very outset, you have Admiral Ackbar advising you of various things about your "mission" on an X-wing squadron, leading an attack on Imperial forces in space. Pretty cool! Inside, they have images of X-wings and Star Destroyers on the flat-panels, but most of the other decor is similar to what it was before. They upgraded the lights inside so it seems a little brighter and perhaps a little bluer. The flooring is new in some places too. And once you get on the ride - the upgrades are really apparent. The carts themselves are new. Going around that first right turn (the ride has a total of approximately 17 right turns and 6 left turns) the Star Wars theme blasts away and you are transported into the universe. The initial ascent has also been modernized, where you are launched into hyperspace by the squadron leader. Once the ride starts you are launched into space and confronted with some enemy tie-fighters, which zip by as you make the first left turn. Things begin to pick up as the sounds of battle fill your ears. They have really smoothed out the track and the ride feels a lot faster than it used to feel - in fact it is quite a rush. I didn't remember feeling that way on the old space mountain. There are a few other cool things you will see on the way through the space battle but suffice to say this should be a mandatory stop your visit to Disneyland! read more

Space Mountain is my favorite Disneyland roller coaster. I know, I know...there are more classic roller coasters (Matterhorn) or more exciting roller coasters (Big Thunder) but something about zooming through space in an area where you have NO IDEA where you are going. Before any review please take my advice and make this your first stop in the morning. Not to ride the attraction but to get yourself a Fastpass. Because the attraction is so popular it always as a pretty lengthy line and if you get a Fastpass when you first get there you can experience some of the smaller Tomorrowland attractions and then go on Space a little later without the huge wait. Space Mountain was completely redone for the 50th anniversary of Disneyland. I remember it was closed for like 2 years...wow that was a boring 2 years. If I remember right there was a time when you waited in line and there was a part where you could actually see inside the ride from the queue and watch the rocket ships zooming by. During this time you could also see somewhat where you were going once you were in the ride and it did not have quite the same affect it does now. Fast forward to 2005 and the 50th anniversary when it reopened and presto that part of the queue is gone and the ride itself is completely pitch black so you no longer can see any of the track or where you are going. It came complete with a redo of the music, which is now totally more suited for the ride itself...the music seems composed for every single turn and drop. I love how not only do they take a picture of you when you are riding but that when you exit the attraction the picture is there waiting for you and that they let you take a picture of it with your cell phone if you really want to. Some parks like Magic Mountain will not let you take pictures but Disney is cool and lets you do just that. Sweet ride! Especially into space! I remember enjoying it so much, my husband and I had to stand in line again! The lines are long but it's indoors so you're in a nice, cool room, escaping from the heat outside. It's definitely worth the wait, I promise. OMG. I freakin loved Space Mountain!! Halloween version was even better than the OG one. I screamed the entire time. My kid was silent throughout. She probably thought I was nuts. We sat at the front of the car and it was awesome! I loved how the ride got faster towards the end. Seriously, we must have hit 100 MPH. It was freakin fantastic!! When we arrived back to reality, I was laughing my butt off. It was just mind blowing. Being in the dark, flying through stars and goblins.. nothing tops that for Halloween! read more

I love Space Mountain! Without exception, this high-velocity thrill ride has always been my favorite: careening through the darkened void of the outer rim; skimming perilously amidst an influx of barreling asteroids and dizzying comets; arching, spiraling, lurching, and ravenously pitching this way and that... Favored, year after exciting year! In fact, I remember the times when groups of us would chorus our National Anthem--our voices cracking as our coasters spun wildly through immense, intergalactic space. So much fun! And what's also very cool is that Space Mountain, having originally opened in 1977, has also been through some changes. In 2007 (as you may or may not recall) the Disneyland Resort, promoting its "Rockin' Both Parks" boost, synced a Red Hot Chili Peppers soundtrack--one which included their pulsing rendition of Stevie Wonder's funky "Higher Ground"--for both its Space Mountain and California Screamin' rides. Rockin' and Rollin' with every dive and turn! And then premiering in 2009, Space Mountain converted to the spooky, Halloween-themed "Space Mountain: Ghost Galaxy" during the trick-or-treating season. In this imaginative overlay, an ominous, green storm overwhelms the Space Port, causing interruptions to video and audio feed. A swarm of nebula ghosts threaten the coasters as explosions and lightning strikes abound! Awesome! Keep it up, Disney! Space Mountain, in its 37 years, has definitely established an excitable following. What's next? read more

This ride consists of many figure 8 turns and small dips in the dark with a barely visible track for the riders. I've been on this ride so many times that I've memorized the entire track, but it's still so much fun. I love making all those tight turns going faster and faster until you end with a burst into the multitude of stars and two flashes of light as your picture is taken. Smile and raise your hands up for the camera! I think it was best when they had it Rockin' to the Red Hot Chili Pepper's edited song, "Higher Ground" in 2007. Disney was on the mark timing the guitar riffs and soundtrack perfectly to the entire ride along with the bright projections and strobe lights. The music made it feel as if your rocket was going faster than the standard ride. This is a very popular oldie but goodie ride, so the line fills up pretty fast. It's always good to pick up a fast pass, ride a few other rides, then come back. When you get off, pick up another fast pass so that you can go back and enjoy it again! This is definitely one of my favorite rides at Disneyland!! It's so much fun!! I can't wait until my daughter is tall enough to ride!! read more

During the normal Disney days this ride is "A-OK" around Halloween time, it's "Yay I'm a fan!" Loaded with space ghosts, floating skulls, and enough speed to get Lamar Odom back on the wagon, haunted Space Mountain is just plain crazy fun. It's pretty much the same ride with a few added spooky elements and it's darker, much darker. The line for this ride was sooooo long and the fast passes were gone by 1pm. I ended up waiting about 2 hours for a 45 second ride. Word to the wise, if you're coming during Halloween, get here early! Was is it worth?, sure. However I probably won't be back for another haunted ride. read more

We don't know what it is, but you Disneyland Guests are "Our Only Hope!" We head off to a Galaxy...Far...Far Away, but we launch from Disneyland's Tomorrowland's HyperSpace Mountain. The force is strong with Disneyland Guests. The wait is over and the Imperial Empire and the Rebel Alliance have marked Disneyland their war zone. The Disney Imagineers revolutionize the classic Space Mountain to the newest overlay, Hyperspace Mountain, as part of their Season of the Force. FastPasses are offered at this attraction, but can go fast with this newest and updated attraction. The wait can be an easy 60 minutes within 15 minutes after park opening. You will be briefed by Admiral Ackbar on your mission to the Planet Jakku. The Blue 77 Squadron protect your flank, but can do so much against the evil Imperial Empire. You fight through a barrage of lasers and debris from Tie-Fighters and X-Wings. Unsuspectingly, you have to go through the Imperial Star Destroyer. Laser cannons left and right of you. Will you make it out?! Of course, you make it out! You get your photo after your mission is over. Get your portable imaging devices and post it on Yelp and other media sites.
